Sam Jackson and Bernie Mac go cross country for Malcolm Lee in SOUL MEN!

Published at:  Nov 29, 2007 4:26:15 AM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I'm an unapologetic fan of Malcolm Lee's UNDERCOVER BROTHER. I haven't seen it yet, but if I had known he directed ROLL BOUNCE I would have seen it in theaters, critics be damned.

Now he's doing a road trip comedy with Samuel L. Jackson and Bernie Mac called SOUL MEN. The flick's about a pair of bickering backup singers that have never gotten along and haven't spoken to each other in 20 years. When their old band leader dies, they find themselves traveling together cross country in order to play in a concert to honor him. Jackson and Mac will do their own performing in the film.

Script by LIFE and INTOLERABLE CRUELTY's Robert Ramsey and Matthew Stone, flick at Dimension. Thoughts?

Was he that "funny" black guy in 'Guess Who' or 'Codename: The Cleaner'? Or was he in both? Or none of them?

Their previous efforts were slickly produced piles of dogshit, that had all the ingredients for smash hits but stunk badly. This doesn't sound like it will go any better.

Have James Earl Jones as the band leader

    by grammaton cleric binks

that dies. Give him a five minute spot, then kill him off. That would be the cherry on the sundae.

Howl, Thomas, Howl. But wait, if they're doing the Sam & Dave story with Samuel L. Jackson, couldn't they find a black guy named Dave?

    by finky089

In fact, I would be MORE interested inthis movie if it was Samuel L trekking cross country with a "darkened" C. Thomas Howell. It'd be better than Rush Hour...which isn't really saying much, is it?

Should've been Sam in "Wild Hogs"...

    by jonas grumpy

...instead of Martin Lawrence. Wouldn't have made that film any BETTER, just more tolerable. Also, would have kept me from wondering throughout, "Isn't Martin's character a little young to be hanging with these other guys?" and, "Surely Sam would've been much more appropriate for this role!" and, "Why the hell am I sitting in this theater watching this movie?" (Oh, yeah... the wife wanted to see it, and it was her turn to pick the movie that weekend. Payback to me for making her sit through "Rock Star," I guess.)

Sam and Bernie, engaged in an onscreen intimidation stare-down, seeing who'll back off first. If that's in this movie, I'll be there. The audience will be the true winner.
