Billie Piper Set For Three More WHOs!!

Published at:  Nov 28, 2007 3:25:54 AM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Rose Tyler, who was sucked into an alternate universe at the end of Dr. Who’s 28th season, will return for three episodes of the show’s 40th season, which hits the BBC early next year.

Billie Piper reprises Rose, who almost got her own spin-off series before creator Russell Davies thought better of the idea. "It spoils Doctor Who if we can see Rose ... if we see as a concrete fact that her life continues to be as exciting without the Doctor," is how Davies explained his cold feet to the BBC.

Didn't want to know Rose was returning. Didn't have a choice in the matter though, since you posted the SPOILER ITSELF on the AICN homepage. Billie Piper returning to Dr. Who *IS* a spoiler, Herc -- so giving us a SPOILER WARNING along with the information does those of us who would have preferred to be surprised a fat lot of good. Do you warn people to look out for the bus after it runs them over, too? Thanks, buddy. I recommend you chane that headline before you're inundated with angry emails.

    by sambrook

We knew about Christopher Ecclestone leaving, about his replacement being David Tennant (the regeneration was filmed in secret and then ruined), about Billie leaving (first time round), about the Daleks return in series 2 to fight the Cybermen, Captain Jack returning in series 3... even The Master was pretty much a given all the way through series 3. Why not keep schtum and let the series have its twists, turns and surprises unfold when they're meant to? Unless this is all damage control for Catherine Tate.

It has been set in canon that this is the 30th season!! Why? Because Peter Davidson appeared in the 8 minute Children in Need special, which are regarded as official parts of the series, as his previous Doctor!! This means that the "new" Who's ARE a continuation...NOT a reboot...so this will be season 30 you morons!!

"Why can't they leave somethings as surprises?"
Because Billie Piper was out doing location filming in Cardiff; it would've been all over the Doctor Who forums and the mainstream media the next day. It's a damage limitation exercise. They do their best to keep things secret - Catherine Tate's arrival in the TARDIS was shot on a closed set - but when you're doing location filming you have to accept that it'll be all over the internet the next day.

Why doesn't RTD just write one called "The Hundred Companions" (or however fucking there have ever been) and get it out of his system. He could also write "The One With The Glaring Gay References", "The One With The Most Annoying Companion EVER!" and "The One With The worst Finale Ever". Followed by the RTD finale, "The Worst Who Episode. Ever", which crosses over with Torchwood, bringing that gurning, sex-obssessed bunch of morons fully central to the new Who mythos. ROBIN HOOD DVD sales go through the roof. RTD apologists still use the "stop mocking RTD 'cos he's gay" argument to mask the fact that even THEY can tell he's a piss-poor Who writer.

    by spud mcspud

Quite liked her actually - liked the working-class chav viewpoint she bought, and she's a surprisingly good accurate, very instinctive. RTD overdid the Rose worship, though, as the Doctor would be WAY more impressed by companions more on his intellectual and curiousity level, like Martha or Sally Sparrow. Rose always came across to me as brave, but a bit thick.

Now her performance in SECRET DIARY OF A CALL GIRL I could talk about aaaaaaaall day... Mmmmmmm... >;p

And yes, you really need to change the headline so that it doesn't reveal the spoiler that many hardcore Whovians already know.

Honestly, I'm surprised you didn't include the rumor that other past companions such as Sarah Jane, K-9, Captain Jack and Mickey will also appear in the Series 4 finale. Hopefully, though, Rose's appearance will be in the form of a past incarnation and not her present self that somehow escaped the parallel universe that she supposedly couldn't leave lest everything go all kerflooey.

    by emeraldboy

Before The bbc and Rte, itv and others adopted the name seasons. Tv stations on this of the pond called programs "series"and not seasons. Each series had an end date. The announcer would say that was the last in the current or present series. Each series was under a budgetary review. Dr who was no exception. Dr who was kept in a constant limbo. They were very lucky to constatly get a greenlight. In the uk and ireland there is no such thing as the studio system. There are exceptions like Only fools and horses, Last of the summer wine. We have Soaps or Serial Dramas, like eastenders, corrie and emmerdale which all been running for decades. But mostly in the Uk/ireland prgrams are series. and not seasons. My family a show which no one watches has been running for the past 9 years. have i got news for you has been running for 18 years. Oh and by the way, Beeb please bring back angus deayton. Which is why the office will air on american tv long after the creative juice is gone. ie 20 years or more.

    by hagakure

I know some people have this strong dislike for Rose, but I always liked her changing relationship with The Doctor (More of a father/daughter relationship with Eccleston, and becoming more romantic with Tennant). One of the things Tennant was able to do moreso than any other Doctor, was that the audience was able to see just how close he had grown to his Companion and just how much of a void he felt when she was gone. I know hardcore fans hate the idea of The Doctor being sexual (Guy locked up in a police box with a hot blond going all across the universe...I would question The Doctor more if he DIDN'T experience some kind of sexual attraction). That being said, with the exception of the GOD AWFUL Tate scene, the Season 2 finale was absolutely perfect. Rose pounding on the wall, crying her heavily mascara'd eyes out, to send her back to the man she has grown to love, and finally, The Doctor fading out before he was able to tell her that, yes, he did indeed love her. Call me a jaded cynic, but I do love me a tragic hero, and that was some epic Romeo/Juliet stuff there. If they bring her back (unless it is some kinid of flashback or something) is only going to ruin one of the greatest goodbye's EVER!

    by lost jarv

is that it isn't anywhere near as risque as it thinks it is. 20 years ago it would have been a proper envelope-pusher (like Queer as Folk was) but nowadays I think you'd almost need to see her fist a dwarf for it to be as ballsy as it thinks it is. And it is also dull as fuck, whiny, middle class angst. She's like a hooker bridget jones. Without the lard.

    I need to clarify this

    by lost jarv

I don't hate Rose per se- I just think that RTD doesn't understand the character of The Doctor. He seems to think that the series is always about the companion (or in the case of last series- the previous companion), and worse than that he over-eggs the pudding by returning to previous companions. It's like a bloody tea party sometimes. The person I feel sorry for is Freema as she looked as if she was keeping the part warm for Catherine Bloody Tate, instead of being allowed to develop in the same way Rose did. We got a whole series of her mooning after the Dr like some lovesick puppy, whilst he whinged about his departed love. Aside from that, CATHERINE TATE- why is there not more outrage over this? It's Britain's flagship Sci-fi for fucks sake.

I was SO pleased when she left the series. She was, as pointed out above "insufferable" in season 2. Martha was a much better, more intelligent (and hotter) character. Three companions in one series is too much. Especially if they bring back Sarah Jane as well - it will only diminish the 'School Reunion' episode. Leave Billy where she is. Despite her generally annoying the shit out of me, her final scene on the beach was great. Guess that's ruined as well. BILLIE SUCKS BALLS.

Season 4, not Season 30: same continuity, different season count

    by stop_saying_things

Next year's Doctor Who season will be season 4, not season 30; the fact that the continuity is the same doesn't mean the season count can't've started over. The same way Season 4 of "Enterprise" wasn't called Season 28 of "Star Trek." RTD said as much, explicitly and canonically, in Doctor Who Magazine back in 2005 before the new program began its run.

Who will be on the table in the final episode, Doakes or Lila?

And with the good Doctor, I do love how often absolutes are broken, and the fanboys gobble them up, as long as there is a halfway-possible reason. The Master is back as a human? Okay, he did something the Doctor did, okay, he's back! BUT NO OTHERS!!!! I AM THE LAST TIME LORD! One thing about that does amaze me... When the Time War happened and the Time Lords all died, they didn't try to get the Lord President or Chancellor in a Escape From New York escape Pod? Shoot an egg through to 51st Century New York? It would have taken 5 seconds... or launch more TARDISes across the cosmos???

    by admiral nelson

Sorry, but The Awfulism’s comments are dead-on – you could cast Piper in a “Planet of the Apes” remake and you wouldn’t even have to put prosthetic makeup on her. She’s gotta be one of the single ugliest lead actresses I’ve ever seen on a TV show. Yeah, I know she was some teen singer who British kids apparently thought was hot stuff a few years back… but good grief, the girl is FUGLY. Her bleached-blonde hair, black eyeliner, Minnie Driver chipmunk cheeks, player piano teeth and Cockney accent make her amazingly unappealing, especially to American audiences. Billie Piper needs to go to France and hook up with those doctors who did that face transplant, stat.

IT came back overwhelmingly "NO" so what did they do? pulled the poll. They should have recast teh actress. Carey Mulligan, I will have to looker her up online. And I sit here thinking about how great she would be as a companion, it is interesting that not only were my favorite episodes of the series written by Steven Moffat, but he is also the one responsible for creating characters that have (or in this case, 'could have') the most chemistry when interacting with The Doctor: Empty Child/Doctor Dances - Captain Jack (Yes, that character has been kind of skewed through Torchwood, but those two episodes were great), Girl in the Fireplace - Madame De Pompadour, and now Blink - Sally Sparrow. I hope some of the rumors are true that Moffat may become a more permanent writer on the show.

So can't the Doctor go back to a time when Rose was still in this dimension? He could see her whenever he wants. Time travel is tricky that way.....

I am a Geek alert....But the Tardis is...

    by hagakure

...a time machine, but the new series somewhat resolved that paradox by putting in the condition, "it is forbidden to cross your own timeline". This was somewhat established in "Parting of the Ways" when Rose suggested to The Doctor they go back in time so they have more time to complete a certain task and The Doctor tells her they can't because they are a part of the events. If the first time Rose met the 10th Doctor was when he regenerated, unless she forgot or didn't recognize him at the time, this version of The Doctor could not go back and interact with Rose as "The Doctor", he would have to pretend he didn't know her. If that is a case, kind of a cheat. But maybe The Doctor realized he loves her so much that he breaks his own cardinal rule to go back to see her....My God! I put much more thought into that than I should have!!!

THE TERM THAT SOME PEOPLE ARE FORGETTING IS "CHARACTER -ARC"....

    by rod1million

WHY ARE CHARACTERS LIKE ROSE, DONNA, AND MARTHA,SO LOVED BY FANS YET DEMONIZED BY THE OTHERS? BECAUSE THE ONES THAT HATE THE CHARACTERS DON'T SEEM TO UNDERSTAND THAT THEY GO THROUGH A "CHARACTER -ARC".THEIR JOURNEY HAS A SPECIFIC DESTINATION. ROSE IS THE CHARACTER WHOSE LOVE FOR THE DOCTOR COMES AT A TIME WHERE HE IS EMPTY AND HOLLOW AS A SURVIVOR OF THE TIME WAR. AT THE END, SHE SHOWS THE DOCTOR THAT SHE WOULD LEAVE HER FAMILY TO STAY BY HIS SIDE. HER EXIT IN "DOOMSDAY" WAS BEAUTIFUL AND HEARTBREAKING..I WAS TEARY-EYED...OVER SCI-FI! DONNA WENT FROM A SHREWY WOMAN WHO GOT EXCITED OVER A NEW FLAVOR OF PRINGLE TO A WOMAN WHO MEETS THE DOCTOR AND WANTS TO SEE THE WORLD ...TO "WALK IN THE DUST". NO DOUBT SHE WILL DEVELOP FURTHER WHEN SHE RETURNS...HOPEFULLY THE NAY-SAYERS WILL GIVE HER A CHANCE. MARTHA JONES ALSO CAME INTO HER OWN AS THE SERIES PROGRESSED. THE UNREQUITED LOVE ASPECT OF HER RELATIONSHIP WITH THE DOCTOR ADDED A TOUCH OF PATHOS TO HER ARC. IN THE NEXT SEASON MARTHA WILL BE INVOLVED WITH SOMEONE, SO HER RELATIONSHIP WITH THE DOCTOR WILL CHANGE FOR THE BETTER. SHE WILL BE MORE OF AN EARTH-BASED COMPANION THAT WILL CONNECT WITH THE DOCTOR, WHICH IS SOMETHING HE LOST WHEN JACKIE AND MICKEY LEFT...WHEN I LOOK AT THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS AND THINK HOW MUCH HAS BEEN ADDED TO THE THE DOCTOR WHO MYTHOLOGY , I CANT BELIEVE ITS ONLY BEEN THREE SEASONS! I FIND THAT SOME OF THOSE BEST EPISODES WHERE WRITTEN BY RTD.. DOOMSDAY, GRIDLOCK , UTOPIA ARE THREE OF MY ALL-TIME FAVORITE RTD STORIES.
YOU CAN TELL THAT HE IS A FAN, AND HE KNOWS HOW TO BRING DOCTOR WHO INTO 2007. AND YOU KNOW WHAT ...ITS WORKING!!!! ON "THE BIG BANG THEORY" THERE WAS A DOCTOR WHO REFERENCE...OUT MAGAZINE PROFILED JOHN BARROWMAN (CAPTAIN JACK) , AND I WENT TO BARNES AND NOBLE AND SAW THE UK DOCTOR WHO MAGAZINE...IDW IS PRODUCING NEW AND CLASSIC DOCTOR WHO MAGAZINES...DW IS EVERYWHERE. SO WHILE DOCTOR WHO / RTD HATERS HAVE A RIGHT TO THEIR OPINION, THEY ARE IN THE MINORITY ... AND I AM SOOOO HAPPY THATS THE CASE!

    Disappointing

    by supertoyslast

Until now, new Who has been constantly improving. I couldn't have asked for more from the third series. A more serious tone, a great new companion, John Simm as the Master and a handful of truly classic episodes. A weak ending but, overall, I was satisfied. But now things look like going wrong. Holding on to Tennant and RTD longer than is good for the show. Taking a sort-of break instead of reinvigorating things with a new team. Ruining a great goodbye by bringing back Rose. Having Catherine *bloody* Tate in the mix. There are things I'm looking forward to in the next series (visits to Ancient Rome and an alien planet) but I would be stunned if it could match up to the third series. I hope I'm wrong.

apparently Sean Pertwee heard, that kids in his area were running a betting pool that he was going to be the next dr, he asked the kids what the odds were and they said 12 to one. He walked into the betting shop told the guy he was and the guy behind the counter who the fuck are you. for a joke Pertwee put down fifty pounds.

Finding it difficult to get interested in the next series

    by hansello

Would like to see Rose pop back ( but not stay). Preferably in a two doctors episode with Christopher Ecclestone. Will miss Martha and be counting down to her re-apperance. Agree with the comments about Sally Sparrow. Perhaps as a compromise she could star in the Doctor-lite episode? As for Catherine Tate...... how do the BBC not understand that she is hated by the majority of fans? They did a poll, and got the message they didn't want to hear... yet still they proceed. When the news first broke about the Tate, I read somewhere that she had another years contract with the BBC and they didn't know what to do with her. I guess adding her to a show already in production was cheaper than another series of 'The Catherine Tate Show' (Lots of cut backs in the Beeb these days).

RTD has outstayed his welcome. He reminds me a little of George Lucas.... he came along with a vision, but ultimately other people are better at conveying it than he his.

Moffat for showrunner asap. And finally, Hate the Tate.

Personally Piper always seemed right mucky to me and that's no bad thing. But personally I'd welcome the return of Martha's wel packaged bum.My word. The idea of having to sit through anything, absolutely anything featuring Catherine "FUCKING" Tate scares me more than cancer.I recently watched the Bridezilla episode and I don't think I have ever, ever been witness to a tv show so full of fucking SHOUTING in my life.If it wasn't that Spider-Queen it was that haggard trout "FUCKING" Tate.I've honestly enjoyed all the New Who stuff but ...that ....woman.Fucking Hell.****Poss.Spoiler****I heard rumours about the return of Davros and the Doctor's past companions all ganging up to defeat him quite a while back. Now that Piper is confirmed maybe this rumour is gaining some semblance of legitimacy.End Poss.Spoiler****Personally,we are all getting off track of the right question to be asking here!Would getting oral pleasure from Billie Piper be better or worse than spanking Martha's arse while she gives head to Sally Sparrow? And with that...I'm going to go back and take my pills.NUuuuuuuUUUUUrrrrRRRSSEEE!!!

    Companions

    by hagakure

This is starting to look like Season 4 is going to be all about the Companions. Something stalking or hunting people (Earth or otherwise) who have been known associates of The Doctor maybe; possibly as an attempt to get to The Doctor himself. Freema, from what I have heard, has been confirmed on several episodes of both 'Doctor Who' and 'Torchwood', so I can see this as a Who/Torchwood crossover where something begins hunting Jack and Martha on Torchwood, Martha contacting The Doctor, and then the three of them go from there. That would also be why Sarah-Jane and Rose are somehow involved. How many of the actors who played Companions in the past are still alive? We could see a lot of cameos this season, which would also open up the Who past a little more for newcomers.

How do I know? I work at BBC. Don't believe me? Just you wait and see. Piper will only commit at this stage to 3 episodes, she becomes new Doc 2nd return episode in, and series ends on cliffhanger between her and Tennant as they stuggle for control of the regeneration process.(In truth beeb hope to convince her to do full series after break but Piper wants to break US and wont commit. Tennant willing to return briefly to pass baton if Piper decides not to commit). Doubters will eat their words!

BBC makes it obvious which villain is returning

    by lynxpro

Last year, they were working on a set of ClassicWho episodes featuring The Master, and guess which classic villain returned to NewWho? That's right, The Master. Before, they did that with the Cybermen. And now they are working on a box set featuring another classic villain...that being Davros, the creator of the Daleks. Guess which villain will be in the finale? Yep, you guessed it...Davros [not Frank Stallone].

    I wasn't a fan of Rose...

    by lynxpro

I didn't think she was that great. Not that I don't believe The Doctor can't fall in love with a human female - because the bloke is half-human after all - but the fact that it was with Rose. I totally believe The Doctor was in love with Romana [who was a Time Lord too], and I think he was at least shagging Peri when he was the 5th Doctor. But of the other human companions, I only bought that he would hook up with Dr. Grace who was at least intelligent. Same goes for Reinette. Not Rose. Hell, he could have fallen in love with Martha because she too was intelligent [med student]. Oh well...yet another attempt at creating *Rose Who* the ultimate Sally Mae character.

    by lynxpro

NewWho did not create the concept of the prohibition against going back in your own timeline and changing events. The 5th Doctor refused to go back and save Adric after he sacrificed himself in "Earthshock". That was like in 1983. Maybe I should have placed a spoiler tag on that.

OK, here's what I've read: MAY BE HUGE SPOILERS

    by ckane123

In response to aestheticity, I'm posting everything I know (I realize my earlier post was too cute by half). And I don't work on the show, I read/track media sources/sites in the UK and the BBC is leaky as a freakin' sieve... Ben Kingsley is supposedly playing Davros. We will see the Time War, in a "flashback" episode, with Paul McGann as The Doctor #8 (this may be the "filler" episode that they usually do to give the leads a break) - we may even see his regeneration to Eccleston. There will be a cross-over with Torchwood (at least the last 4 episodes of Who - All ONE BIG STORY- will be referenced). They are talks about a Four Doctors Episode, but not this series (for the next anniversary). Davros will have a hand in The Time War - both of them. Astrid in the Christmas special is actually the Doctor's Tardis, in physical form. And finally, Joanna Lumley will be The Master, possessed by the spirit of Paul Simm. There are many rumors they HAVE ALREADY DECIDED who the next Doctor will be, and the regeneration will be at the end of the third movie next year. The biggest name right now - Paul Simm. Yup, The Doctor will regenerate and look just like The Master...

    verity lambert died aged 71

    by emeraldboy

Lambert was the production force behind Dr. Who, Rumpole of the bailey, rock follies, minder, Widows, out, Quatermass Danger UXB and Riley ace of spies, the naked Civil servant and the landmark seven part series Edward and Mrs simpson which starred Edward Fox and Cynthia Harris and EL DORADO, her biggest and only bomb. Verity Lambert was one of the most feared and respected women in british entertainment. She worked on Armchair Theatre. Yet it is Dr who that she will be remembered for. But the other shows she produced were all classics. She is survived by her husband tv director COlin Buckey. they have no children. Lambert had a short fuse, was dogged and reduced strong men to tears. Even Syd newman, who created Dr who, feared her and described her as being Full of Vinegar and Piss. She also produced the Meryl streep movie a cry in the dark.

    What I'm Worried About...

    by garofellatio

Is that basically Season 4/30 will be one big RTD intramural self-referential clstrfk.

Basically ending in a three-or-four-parter that (more or less, and this is all pure speculation) crosses over Torchwood and Sarah Jane Adventure with Dr Who, reunites Doctor & Rose, drags the Daleks further down (if they're so dangerous, why do they allow the Doctor to make fun of them to their faces IN EVERY STORY) and tops off a season full of guest star stunt casting and too many gay references.

Having said that, I'd love to see Paul McGann (briefly) and I'm looking forward to much of the confirmed hilights of the season.

So who knows? Could be awesome, could be more RTD overkill. Guess we'll just see.

    NEW DEFINITION OF SPOLIER

    by garofellatio

    By the way...

We need a new or refined definition of "spoiler." Some people in this TB have complained that the title of this thread "spoiled" Billie Piper's return in the new series for them.

    Bullshit.

A spoiler is when an unpublicised or supposedly-secret fact leaks out that could ruin one's enjoyment/sense of surprise. Billie Piper's depature, like Catherine Tate's return, is an established piece of NEWS about the upcoming series that was released by the BBC. Know what? THE JOKER IS IN THE NEXT BATMAN MOVIE, TOO!!!

I understand not wanting to know too much (and it's a real handicap for USA DR Who fans, as with the Master turning up in Season 3, but waddayagonnado?

THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BEING WILLINGLY IGNORANT OF PRESS RELEASES REGARDING DR WHO AND TAKING UMBRAGE THAT OTHER PEOPLE ARE DISCUSSING THEM, AND WANTING TO RETAIN SOME MYSTERY BY NOT KNOWING EVERY DETAIL.
