JOURNEYMAN Creator Falls Talks Reveals, Ratings And Livia's Cavorting Time-Undies!!

Published at:  Nov 26, 2007 7:40:39 PM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Some interesting nuggets from a new If Magazine interview with “Journeyman” mastermind Kevin Falls:

* Since Livia was able to travel to 2007, it looks like she might be alive as an old woman somewhere.

* Young Livia will find herself jumping in lingerie in episode 11.

* A number of people Dan has saved will play into the season finale (if there is a season finale).

* Falls originally intended to explain what’s causing Dan and Livia to time-travel in the SERIES finale, but is rethinking that plan. Now it looks like we’ll find out in the first or second season finale, if the show gets that far.

* “Journeyman” has one of the biggest music budgets on TV, and all music is cleared for broadcast as well as DVD. (As closed-captioning belies, two weeks ago a Jefferson Starship tune was subbed for a Stevie Winwood song at the last minute due to an inability to clear the Winwood number for DVD.)

* Falls confirms that episodes 10 and 11 will air regardless of ratings. Unlike “Chuck” and “Life,” “Journeyman” has not yet received a full-season order.

Read all of If Magazine’s story on the matter here.

Episode nine airs tonight at 10 p.m. on NBC.

    Only looks like Quantum leap

    by thehichhiker

I was thinking it was just a QL rip-off but glad I stuck around past first few episodes - Its actually a lot more interesting than QL, with the "leaps" being as important as the sick people to House - just something to give show that episodic nature and provide the backdrop for the real story as things much more interesting are happening. They actually managed to create a pretty interesting story and characters out of very mediocre concept - much better than all these other people creating mediocre shows out of good concepts. I really hope it does not get canceled.

Thanks to Herc to calling attention to this show. At first, it was just one more new show based on time travel which, albeit interesting, has been done ad naseum. But when you watch and see how time travel is handled here, with all the plots and subplots, and all the nuances of each plot and subplot, you end up with a show that could rival Season 1 of Lost without even trying!

    by catvutt

This is why this show has come so far, so quickly. A lesser show would STILL be playing the 'My brother thinks I'm nuts' angle, rather than taking the logical step and bringing Jack into the fold. The lesser aspects of this show, the weaker plots, have been sliding away more and more week after week, and it's firmly established itself as a legitimately compelling show. I KNEW Jack was going to meet Livia this episode from NBC's notoriously spoiler happy promo department, and it STILL gave me a chill. FULL SEASON ORDER NOW!

    by polyh3dron

It's a great show. I hated how people boycotted the Black Donnellys last season just because it replaced Studio 60. They're BOTH GOOD SHOWS. But NBC, you'd better order more Journeyman episodes or you're gonna have a shitload of pissed off viewers that are going to swear off your network for good. NBC has the best primetime scripted lineup on Monday, better than any other network. They need to keep it that way. Kudos for extending Life and Chuck though.

Blend in with the writers early in the morning at the picket lines and try to catch Ben Silverman, Marc Graboff or Katherine Pope or whoever else are the other prime time execs there these days while they're pulling in to work (the striking writers may even help point them out for you) and present a whole bunch of ketchup sandwiches to them.. in a non violent way of course :D

    The problem with NBC...

    by montag666

First of all they have lousy ideas for shows. Did you guys see the promo for that gospel singers type contest? WTF? Who wants to see that? Second of all, when they do get a good idea they kill it at the first sign of weakness. Back in the day, they used to let shows find their audience and they would have at least one full season and a half before everyone would start to worry. Look at Cheers. That show was getting lousy ratings in its first year. They used to give shows a chance over there and now they just freak and cancel whatever doesn't go through the roof. If there is a show that should be given a chance it's this one.

    NBC doesn't usually do this

    by nalapou

Studio 60 was plain getting bad creatively, and The Black Donnelly's was boycotted because it wasn't Studio 60 by the few people that still watched it. NBC has a huge track record of not caring about ratings as much as FOX or ABC. Case in point the first seasons of The Office or 30 Rock, all 7 seasons of Scrubs, the last 5 seasons of ER, or the last 12-13 seasons of Law and Order Original. That is why this is so terrible, it's completely out of character. DON'T DO THIS NBC!! Unless you REALLY like Ketchup... as for NudeandAroused, who doesn't watch a show cause it's "Scientifically Impossible"? lol... weird... FAMMIT!

I would have thought for this show that an early 'reveal' would be to its benefit anyway, as long as its fairly satisfying he could choose to keep doing it, perhaps recruiting others to do it as well or something. I would have thought revealing how its all happening would open up story options not close them. So in a way this is a good thing. I'm in the UK so can someone who would noramlly not, watch it in my place to get the ratings up :)

Question for Herc Do the studios bear in mind potential sales to other countries before making renewal decisions? I'm sure we could convice our lovely Beeb to buy it for sure :)

I must admit, I watched it last night. Moon Bloodgood is quite foxy, and the actress playing Dan's wife wasn't completely horrible this time. McKidd continues with strong performances despite enduring formulaic scenarios.

Fans need to do something NOW!

    by mel gibsteinberg

Seriously, one of the issues is that fans always come to the table after its too late, case in point Firefly or Jericho. But the problem that I see right now, is that serialized fictional dramatic TV is in serious jeopardy regardless of what happens with Journeyman. The fact is, these stupid Reality TV shows are so cheap to produce, and people still watch them, that most networks just can't help themselves. They are, afterall, a business. Once in awhile a phenomenon like Heroes or Lost becomes worth doing, but for every Heroes, there is also Day Break, The 9, Invasion, and a whole bunch of other sci-fi/fantastical shows that probabl cost a lot to produce and never went anywhere. I think the general viewing public gets confused as to which is the worthy show, and which is just another crappy knock off trying to get the rabid viewer to tune in. Speaking of Jericoh, when did they bring this back? Have they already aired the mini-season this year? Man how did I miss that?

    by agentf1

A lot of people say that Journeyman started slow....if you watch the first couple episodes over again, they actually seem a lot better just because of the way the rest of the episodes have developed
Speaking of early episodes, did anyone notice that the toolbox that Bennett found to pretend to be a plumber was the one that Dan bought in the pilot to bury in the backyard? How cool is that for continuity.

You should be thrilled that FAMMIT caught on, if this ever jumps to any other talkback, you will have a bonafide talkback term on your hands, that you created. I doubt it could ever reach the hights of "sexiest tomboy beanpole" or Grando Calrissian, or even "has a beer and cheats on his wife" but it could have its place. Or not, it may just die later today, but for now, FAMMIT is pretty GOD-FAMM funny!

    by big jim

I will tell them to Duck Odd & Fie!Great episode last night. The tension created by the back & forth between Dan in the past trying to complete his task, and Bennet in the present in Dan's house, had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. The reveal that the kid was Bennet was very well done. Did not see it coming. All these possible scenarios of what Dan might do to save himself, and the possible consequences, starting running through my head and I had to pause the show a couple of seconds to process it all. Some great lines in this last episode. "They always need money" was the best. I laughed at "Weirdest family ever"; and "This is your dad's. Won't he kill you?" "That'd work out well for you then".I agree that if the music is a prohibitive expense then they should either cut back or just drop it. It's a nice touch but not a necessity.

    by obi5kenobi

People keep saying that we should wait until a show finishes a season and then start watching it. I thought that was a terrible idea. Now, if Journeyman gets cancelled, I will do just that. Journeyman is such a great show and I actually care what happens. If NBC cancels it after so few episodes I will take the "wait and see" approach with any new show they put on.

When will they learn that every show can't be an instant hit? They need time.

I have one potential issue with Livia's time travelling that I want other fans opinions on. Dan goes back in time and comes back to the present. He can check to see what changes he made with the help of the internet, his brother the cop and the fact that he's a reporter. Livia only goes forward in time. She doesn't have the benefit of knowing that some things are going to happen. She also doesn't have any way of checking on her progress when she returns to her own time. Her job would appear to be much harder than Dan's. Am I right about this?

  • Bacteria these days are much more stronger and resistant to antibiotics. So since he got shot present day, with a present day tougher strain of bacteria, treating it with wimpy Ampicillin back in the 80's wouldn't do anything. But she said something about a virus, which is wrong, since virus and bacteria are totally different.

    by growltiger

The hook with ampicillin treating an infection from this era was a nice touch. On the other hand I thought I spied a late model Jeep Wrangler in the past (round headlights versus square) when Dan had his run in with an automobile.

But I feel generous towards Journeyman because it gets a lot of nifty bits of trivia in most of their views to the past. The pseudo Patty Hearst episode had a swinging singles party where the guests were excited over the prospect of a bottle of Blue Nun. LOL.
I need to mention that I too found the encounter with Jack & Livia in the lift compelling. Even if it was spoiled in the previews. Reed Diamond and Moon Bloodgood played that scene well. The look on Jack's face when he sees Livia standing in the hallway was priceless.
I, too, hope this series gets a full season order.

Who makes a good time traveler?

    by i hope you die

I had a script idea many years ago where the best people to be put in a situation similar to Dan's would be basement dwelling nerds. Their frequent absences wouldn't radically alter the time line because they had such little effect on history. The revelation this week that Livia had to hook Dan and Katie up got me thinking. Perhaps Dan, similarly, needed a family who wouldn't freak out too much, preserving the time line for whoever is behind the time travel. That would place whoever is behind it in the future. (If they were in Dan's present, presumably they wouldn't care.) The show obviously has a concept of a semi-flexible time line and I suppose the manipulators are manipulating those events they can (because they're isolated somehow?), avoiding the confusing morass of others. Then again, maybe the writers haven't thought it through that much.

It's okay. Fairly standard fare, though, and I would hardly call it 'far superior' to the last 4-5 episodes of Journeyman. It's really just a far less goofy version of Burn Notice, frankly. But again, I have no problem with it. It's fine. But it already HAS its Full Season Order. What sucks is the Heroes season finale will probably get pretty good numbers (People are still watching that, right?), which may help inflate the 'Life' numbers in that timeslot.

    by slkboxrman

i was on my seat for the whole episode...i thought the kid might be the guy in his house....would make sense as a test for dan, being that livia alluded to a sorta organization to what they do, and the consequences if they go off mission.."you havent seen nothing yet" i really thought that either dan was going to possibly kill the kid or change his life so significantly that the future would change and the guy would not be in his house..but i think that woulda caused a problem the writers might have been afraid to handle...if he kills the kid or changes his life the future changes, he never gets shot, etc...but my opinion on time problems like that is that once something happens it dont change, meaning dan would be shot in the new timeline even if he changed the circumstances that got him shot in the first place..love how they revealed the fbi guy as someone possibly tracking time travellers, seemingly knowing alot, not reporting any of it...and ultimately getting killed, nice loophole closed, especially since he never filed his investigation, because it was his own personal project...two best scenes of many were the interns reaction to the iphone in 1980, the ambulance drivers reaction when livia then dan jumped almost simultaneously in the back of the ambulance...jacks face when he saw livia, livia shoving the woman out of the elevator to talk to jack...the fbi guys proof of dan in different years, and dan, katie, and jack at the end with jack apologizing for taking so long to come along, and kate saying he had a very steep hill to climb......very awesome episode....this has to get a full season and multiple seasons.
