A Mammoth Amount Of BTS Footage From John Woo's RED CLIFF!! It Could Be Super-Gargantuan & Cool!!

Published at:  Nov 26, 2007 10:09:36 AM CST

Merrick here...

CCTV has posted a buttload of behind-the-scenes material from John Woo's RED CLIFF.

HERE is a Wiki entry which summaries the historical battle on which this film is based. If the movie faithfully captures the scale of the warfare, it could be HUGE (land battles, ocean battles, etc.) You can also find some nice photos from the project HERE.

You can click HERE, HERE, HERE, or HERE to see the behind-the-scenes footage. It's in Chinese, and totals 150 minutes of coverage (which is close to the amount of time ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT devotes to DANCING WITH THE STARS in a given week).

These videos come to us via the CCTV, the state TV network in China. I just read an interesting article about CCTV's new headquarters - it's architecturally unique in many regards & is already under construction. Here's some concept art from it; looks like it belongs in LOGAN'S RUN.

    by freydis

it could be pretty darned awesome... but I don't think they're going to have time to establish the characters and their motivations if they're just focusing on the battle of red cliffs. Still, should be fun. I'm also waiting for a TDK update...

John Woo comes out with another flick. Really, I could like this guy and his movies if they didn't take themselves so seriously...you know a little wink wink now and again just to let the viewer know that these characters realize flying through the air in impossible ways while shooting two massive guns that never run out of bullets, all while white doves frame the slow-mo action....is fucking retarded. Just a little wink wink Woo, come on.

    Now THAT'S an epic project!

    by spencertrilby

Way to go, John! If Zhang Yimou, Johnnie To or Ang Lee can cope with the Chinese Film Board, you can.

Oh, and Lezbo Milk: if you want some wink wink, the Iron Man teaser is full of it. And the Dreamworks CGI flicks. And Adam Sandler films. And Transformers. And... well, you got my point: since 9 H'wood movies out of ten are ridden with inside jokes and self indulgent references, Woo's movies come - as far as I'm concerned - as a relief.

    Poor John Woo.

    by harry weinstein

I feel bad for the guy, this film's been a nightmare since preproduction and it just doesn't seem to quit. Casting problems that dragged over into shooting, weather problems, script problems, PR problems - it's by all accounts been a hellish shoot, and it's not even over yet. Bad enough when it happens on a small film, but this thing is fucking gigantic in scale, amplifying all the problems tenfold.

    by godoffireinhell

I won't deny that the guy had some talent but that was many, many years ago. Nowadays he's turned into a truly pathetic self-parody and he really should do himself a favor and blow his brains out.

Do you mean Zhang Ziyi? Because Zhang Yimou is a man, not a woman. The Chinese-English translations are sometimes difficult, so it's no big deal. But I'd hate for Yimou to be labeled female and a typecast actress. It might ruin his reputation abroad.

Has Woo done anything in America that didn't suck?

    by i dunno

Hard Boiled was a classic, so was a lot of his other work in Hong Kong but for whatever reason, maybe the Hollywood studio suits holding him back, whatever, his US movies suck ass. With the exception of Face/Off, which was awesome in an over the top ridiculous sort of way.

Just amazing real asswhuping and the most phenonimal weapons work of all time. get the Venoms back together (minus little cheng Chiang who is dead) Kuo Chue (Mad Dog in Hard Boiled for those who don't know the Venoms), Lo Meng, Lu Feng, Wang Li!!! I want a Venoms reunion, these guys could fuck up Jet Li and Jackie Chan without breaking a sweat!! I want The 5 Fucking Deadly Venoms to return !!!!!!

I only have a passing knowledge of Chinese cinema but it has all the big name male "drama" actors in it Tony Leung, Chang Chen and Takeshi Kaneshiro who are the only actors I really know apart from Jackie Chan, Jet Li and Chow Yun Fat. I guess it doesn't have any of the big female actors - like Gong Lee, Karina Lau, Maggie Cheung or Zhang Ziyi - in it cause they seem to all be bit parts.

I can't remember who else I thought was supposed to be in it, besides Andy Lau. But I remember thinking it sounded like a monstrous cast. Maybe it was just one of those IMDb things where they list everyone they can think of.

here in China, CCTV is a bit of a joke

    by seph_j

... at least to foreigners. CCTV 9 is the English language news channel.... and the probing and insightful stories they report on almost seem like they are aware everybody knows its controlled, so they take the piss!
In a week where theres a lot of political stuff happening in the world... the top story is "England prepares for what might be a lot of rain this weekend!"
On of the stations just shows peking opera all day....still, CCTV 6 (the film channel I think) is pretty cool.

    by shinigamisan

I'd like to see that during construction. It will be held together with 5 million bamboo poles till finished. I can't believe those workers climb out on bamboo scaffolding 800 feet in the air.

    Lutz....... and everyone.

    by seph_j

Not even sure if Takeshi Kaneshiro is Chinese.... the clue might be in his err...Japanese name........

And in general, people... just because the only films that get released in the US are films starring Zhang Ziyi, Gong Li, Jackie Chan and Chow Yun Fat, this doesn't mean all Chinese films have them in... I mean come on. Not every American film made has Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt or Angelina Jolie in, right! Theres a lot of good Chinese films most people in the US will never see, and a lot of actors they will only ever know about IF they happen to star in something the Weinsteins decide to distribute over there.
Its not just erhu music and people running on water and through the trees.
If you think Zhang Yimou is all about that, my advice is find a film like 'Happy Times hotel', or 'Riding Alone For Thousands Of Miles' or any of his earlier work.

This man made Face/Off! Not to mention classics like Hard-Boiled, The Killer, and Bullet in the Head. Sure Broken Arrow and that movie with Ben Affhack sucked, but he still made the movie possible with the material he has been having to work with. Give the man a solid script, you got a kick-ass action movie.
