AICN Anime Returns With Venus Versus Virus, News and More

Unexciting True Stories

It's only been about a week's since a column has gone online, but that week felt significantly longer. In honor of AICN Anime's seventh anniversary, my place was flooded. I didn't have the presence of mind to get a good picture when it looked really interesting, but here's what the place looked like after the carpet was torn out.
Road work in the apartment complex caused a pressure surge that blew up the water heater in the place above mine. My ceiling was stained. My carpet was soaked. Ruined things included my stack of the New Yorkers, the first issue of cereal:geek, the Kazuo Koike manga Samurai Executioner and the Yoshitoshi ABe design book that C.B. Cebulski's Fanboy Inc released. All in all... at least it wasn't a fire.

Anime Spotlight: Venus Versus Virus Volume 1: Outbreak Released by ADV Films

There's an element of voyeurism in all fiction, but that notion is particularly pronounced in Venus Versus Virus. The primary appeal of the show is that it features adolescent girls decked out in attention grabbing loli-goth fashion, and, there is a slight, but less than subtle suggestion of lesbian (yuri) interest. Except, the series is not positioned for people who can dissect and explain the myriad strains of Gothic Lolita, or who might identify with what might be lesbian feelings. The original manga (published in North America by Seven Seas) was a shonen (boy's) title, published in Dengeki Comic Gao!, an anthology largely comprised of bishojo (cute girl) series. This periodical has been the source of DearS, Burst Angel, Club-To-Death Angel Dokuro-chan and Best Student Council. Here, Venus Versus Virus simply presents on opportunity for an interested viewer to look at a cute yuri couple in dark, elaborately designed outfits. The quasi-Victorian look, stark tones and religious iconography of the showcased fashion is complemented by a horror high concept for Venus Versus Virus. The "Viruses" in question are demonic beings that vary in complexity from guck, shambling in the shadows and watching the world through diseased eyeballs to more human like creatures with the physical and cognitive abilities needed to entrap victims. The partnership at the center of Venus Versus Virus consists of Sumire, an every-girl who stumbles into harm's way and Lucia, a life long virus exterminator. Along the prominent aesthetic angle of the show, Sumire attends a school with a particularly memorable uniform, in the tradition of some of CLAMP's extravagant designs, consisting of what looks like a maroon tunic over a puffy blouse, long, fingerless gloves, black stocking and a black micro-tie. On Lucia's side, her Venus Vanguard works under the cover of a shop for jewelry and clothes. In the place of a super-hero's bright colors, the career figher's outfit is a black and purple, lace trimmed gown/kimono hybrid... and, she has an patch to cover an eye that has some power over viruses. The pair follow the route of supernatural monster trouble shooting, solving specific virus caused miseries. For drama, Lucia clearly has a tragic history tied this battle. Sumire is forced to deal with breaking away from friends and typical teenager activities to pursue her duties. The extra hook here leverages the idea of demonic "viruses". The beings are stopped by "anti-viruses," which are loaded into bullets. Lucia is quite skilled at taking down viruses with a modified fire arm. Despite her time training at the range, Sumire literally can't hit a target at point blank. Yet, when exposed to this, Sumire herself because an anti-versus, and in that berserk state, she'll rend the viruses apart. Dramatic irony being that while she becomes the ultimately weapons to stop viruses, she also attacks the people that she cares about, particularly Lucia. The pair are given personalities and circumstances that are suitable to the hoped-for tone. While the anime appeals to be aiming for something a bit dark, occasionally poignant, the perspective that it offers is too narrow to find anything seriously credible. Even minor ticks, such as some one who is perpetually munching on sweets does not break the impression that everyone on screen is exactly molded to their function. They perform their roles as the stars of an exorcist action anime. They wear the clothes. But there's little beyond that. They aren't quite reduced to mannequins, but they aren't given the flesh or characteristics beyond a base, utilitarian character sketches either. The animation takes a similar, no frills, no embellishments, get the job done approach. Unless you're a fan of the vampire comedy Karin, director Shinichiro Kimura's resume is not exactly populated by universally regarded works (Burn Up Excess, Cosplay Complex, Hand Maid May, Maburaho, Popotan, Sugar: A Little Snow Fairy). He's worked in anime's cute girl subgenre long enough that he should be a reliable choice for something like Venus Versus Virus, but not a choice that will elevate the material or the production. Nor is the series animator, Studio Hibari a name that inspires confidence. Studio Hibari has been around, and with anime like political sci-fi Moonlight Mile, they have become more noteworthy, but up until recently, their work has generally been contributing to rather than leading anime production. The results are not sloppy, but not inspired either. The series appears as if it was not a particularly involved project for the animators. As such, they didn't seem particularly mindful of what they were doing. For example, Lucia might be a rigid character, but frequently, she is animated as unnaturally stiff, without any semblance of a reasonably adopted posture. Starting with an opening credits sequence that recalls the structure and beats of 90's works, the animators look like they were resting on comfortable routine. While it seems easier to achieve more complex color palettes in digital animation than it was in the cel days, Venus Versus Virus looks hesitant to move away from fully illuminated daylight. The black and white of the manga was missing some of the purples of Lucia's attire, but it did complement the atmosphere of the work. Here, it's short on shadows and lacking specific tone. This "as is" look detracts from a sense of a hidden, ghostly world lurking just out of eyeshot, and that eerie proximity was one the few effective elements of horror in the manga. Venus Versus Virus is rudimentary supernatural horror/action that is set apart by its showcasing of a specific aesthetic. The anime does slightly pull back on some of the excesses in that regard. The pin-up aspect of the manga has largely been transitioned to brief stills in the anime's eyecatches (what would break an episode to introduce/return from commercials), where Samire and Lucia wear more extreme examples of the focal fashion. Even though the point of a series like this is to have its characters in their trademark outfits in motion, that lighter touch does not present a problem for the anime,. Unfortunately, with a lackluster quality of animation at work, the end result is not especially impressive.

NYICFF Screenings

This weekend, the New York International Children's Film Festival will be screening Kid Flix Mix & Pelicanman at the Symphony Space - 95th & B'way/ Tickets can be purchased here PELICANMAN Finland/Sweden, Lisa Helminen, 2005, 86 min Symphony Space- Sat & Sun, Nov 24 & 25 - 2:00pm In Finnish with English subtitles - Recommended ages 7-14 A festival favorite (Cannes, Toronto, Berlin), Pelicanman is a fantasy-allegory about a pelican who becomes human, imitating our looks, learning our culture, getting a job at the opera, and even falling in love with a graceful dancer. Ten-year-olds Emil and Elsa, his new neighbors, immediately see through the disguise and, as they teach him to read and navigate the human world, the Pelican discovers the best humanity has to offer: poetry and science, philosophy and friendship. But the Pelican also learns the dangers, when his bird-allergic landlady becomes suspicious and convinces the townspeople to capture the Pelican and place him in a zoo. Critics have compared the film to everything from Felini's Amarcord to "the Finnish E.T.," but we see Chaplin-esque innocence and naiveté in Kari Ketonen's delightfully absurd portrayal of the Pelican who teaches us about our world as he experiences it for himself. Kazuto Nakazawa's Asience: Hairy Tale Wins Ad Award

The Production I.G animated "Asience: Hairy Tale" compain directed by Kazuto Nakazawa for Kao Corporation, has been awarded Gold at the 22nd London International Advertising Awards, Television/Cinema category, cel animation section. The award ceremony took place in London at the Hippodrome on November 12, 2007. Created by Production I.G for Kao Corporation's Asience shampoo, "Asience: Hairy Tale" is a 60-second animated film directed by Kazuto Nakazawa, who gained international fame by directing the animation part in Quentin Tarantino's world hit "Kill Bill: Vol. 1." Nakazawa also designed the characters, made the storyboard, directed the animation and drew all key frames. Backgrounds are beautifully produced by Shuichi Hirata, the texture wizard behind the stunning artwork of Cannes-nominated "Innocence" and Annecy-selected "xxxHOLiC - A Midsummer Night's Dream," while the music is composed and performed by Yoshihiro Ike, whose past collaborations with I.G include "Blood: The Last Vampire" and "Reideen". The graphic style of "Asience: Hairy Tale" is visually inspired by XVIII century Japanese paintings, and personalized by Nakazawa's nervous and expressive brush touch used for the characters outlines. Without any support of 3D animation techniques, the brush lines were painstakingly traced with pencil on paper by the in-between staff. The story concept, focusing on woman's hair as metaphor of feminine life, is portrayed as a tragic love story in a samurai drama fashion. Of note, Production I.G has posted an interview with Junko Nishimura (Inbetween Checker) about making Asience here. Asience: Hairy Tale can be seen on clappa! website here
