Watch Tonight!! JOURNEYMAN Teeters On The NBC Abyss!!

Published at:  Nov 19, 2007 4:28:23 PM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

A source deep inside NBC Universal says the network has stopped promoting what I regard as one of fall’s best new shows, “Journeyman,” and will cancel it unless the two-parter airing tonight and next Monday brings big numbers.

The source, a big proponent of the show, describes the two-parter as “super-dark and twisted.”

The show has five new episodes to air, including tonight’s. Whether NBC actually airs them is in question.

Our source says these final five episodes will tell us great deal more about how and, more importantly, why Dan (from 2007) and Livia (from 1948) are being slung through time.

NBC says of the two-parter:

"EMILY"
11/19/2007 KIDNAPPING SOLVED-PART ONE OF SPECIAL TWO PART SERIES- RAPHAEL SBARGE ("24") GUEST STARS --Dan (Kevin McKidd) travels back to the early 90's where he seems to be tracking a serial kidnapper (guest star Raphael Sbarge). Katie (Gretchen Egolf) wonders what effects Dan's disappearances are having on Zack (Charles Henry Wyson) when she is called into his school. Meanwhile, Jack (Reed Diamond) remains skeptical, but begins to see evidence that Dan might be telling the truth about his travels. Moon Bloodgood and Brian Howe also star.

"BLOWBACK"
11/26/2007 WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND-EXCITING CONCLUSION OF TWO PART SERIES- RAPHAEL SBARGE ("24") GUEST STARS—The dangerous kidnapper Aeden Bennett (guest star Raphael Sbarge) is back and Dan (Kevin McKidd) learns a difficult lesson about what happens when he goes off mission. Dan travels back to 1983 and discovers a young criminal in the making. Livia (Moon Bloodgood) continues to uncover secrets about her purpose in life. Meanwhile, Katie gets into a deadly predicament when the kidnapper seeks revenge. Reed Diamond, Brian Howe and Charles Henry Wyson also star.

This and LIFE are by far the best new shows on TV. This show makes you think, laugh, remember old times, is suspensful and makes you like the characters. It needs more danger for sure, maybe this will help that... NBC DO NOT CANCEL THIS SHOW... What else do you have? It's not like the network has a ton of great shows.. Maybe a different night or not after Heroes but don't cancel it and DON'T bury it on Friday.

correct me if i'm wrong, but i thought the writers strike meant that the networks were no longer yanking stuff with poor ratings, since - let's face it - they don't have anything to replace it with.

    Short-sighted Networks

    by aversiontherapy2

This is exactly the kind of show that should be nurtured and promoted properly to become a hit for the network, rather than expected to pull big numbers out of its own ass to survive. This is why we're going to end up with shitty reality shows and a few popular dramas.

Fox and the CW go off the air at 10:00

    by napoleon park

Fox and the CW go off the air at 10:00, American airs realty crap and Columbia had CSI: The Comic Book version. (Which I don't mean as an insult, by the way.) so there's minimal competition and the networks are desperate to hang on to any new material they have in the can in the face of the writers strike. So with the books stacked in it's favor, how bad does this show have to be to dangle on the precipice of cancelation? The "It's Quantum" comparisons were old half a year ago. Here are some new ones: It's Cold Case but all the musical flashbacks happen in the '80s. It's Big Love but instead of three wives the hero has a wife now and a girlfriend a quarter of a century ago... simultaneously!Time travel is always hard to write, even by science fiction authors, let alone TV writers. What this show has going for it is a star that kinda looka a little like that new James Bond guy. That's not much.I admit I was impatient - I watched three episodes and bailed and I've heard it got better once the basic formula was established, so maybe there's something there, but the news that the shows on the edge of cancellation doesn't inspire me to want to catch up now.Of the new genre shows I like the fantasy shows Pushing Daisies, Reaper and Saving Grace and the espionage spoof Chuck. I know night time soap opera are scorned here in geekhaven, but I enjoy Dirty Sexy Money, Big Shots and Women's Murder Club. I even find Cavemen amusing. Bionic Woman and Samantha Who?, not so much. Still, any season with a half dozen or so fairy decent shows is way ahead of most years. Now if Fox will just cancel Family Guy and American Dad and AICN will run Chuck and Reaper talkbacks, everybody will be happy.

I watched the first 15 minutes of the first episode before I turned it off to make time for breaking some of my own bones. I'm blown away, genuinely blown away that anyone likes this tripe. The pacing, acting, dialogue, and story are all terrible. The ONLY good thing to come out of that show for me was over hearing a Cat Power song at the end of one of the episodes (my room mate actually watches it) that I fell in love with.

I should've known this was coming as soon as it started to really grow on me. And anyone who tuned out during the first couple episodes, I TOTALLY don't blame you, but it's really come together into something intriguing enough to get more of a chance. It actually reminds me tonally a little bit of 1st Season Angel, which was really dull and painful for the most part, but really started amping it up as it went along and as the cast started to gel. Oh, well. I can't say I'll be extremely upset, but I do think it could've made its way to being very, very good.

    by johnnysunshine

i think this is my favorite of the new shows this year. I might not have watched it every week if it didn't come on after heroes, but I'm glad I did because every episode gets me more and more curious about what is going on. Its always super annoying when networks don't even air all the episodes of a new show when its this good, but considering how the writer's strike is halting production on so many shows, it seems like it would be just stupid for NBC not to at least air the remaining episodes if they have nothing else but reality shows. NBC in the last two years has gone from a network I never watched at all to the home of more good shows than any of the other majors so I hope they keep this show on.

They have a whole bunch of other tv shows they gotta show? There's a f*cking strike on for heaven's sakes. I think this "Deep NBC Universal Source" is full of shit. It MIGHT not get a season 2, but they'll finish season 1's 13 episodes... afterall, this is NBC, not FOX or ABC... they aren't assholes to their fans, and they also aren't in a position to be picky. 4th place network and all...

    by djjester

Honestly, Journeyman is bland. I watched the first 4 episodes religiously but by the 5th I just totally lost interest.. it kept going back to the same thing over and over.. he jumps back in time, his wife gets pissed, he runs into his ex, he saves someone.. end of story, nothing about any of it really got me interested. The main character, Dan has no real spark of excitement about him.

I want any sci-fi show to do well and I watch as many as I can as long as I can but I've got episodes 6-8 on my DVR and still havn't watched them. I've since cancelled its recording.

Its not a show for the average viewer, its a show for folks who want something a bit more subtle and deeper.

This is something that if it had been on Showtime or Sci-Fi (not run by the idiots at Sci-Fi but aired on Sci-Fi) would pro'lly never fear being cancelled. Major network material, its not.

Ok, forget the usual stupidity of TV show selection, right now the writers are on strike - so there is nothing new that can replace the show - so instead of airing new content they want to air re-runs? Meanwhile its not like it is costing them any money - without writers they cannot be shooting new episodes anyway, so what is the point of this??

after heros would be prime real estate,..but putting a show where someone travels a few years back in time after a show where a guy travels to feudal japan.....kinda seems lackluster...in fact, i think journeyman premiered immediately after Hiro went back in time to japan.....otherwise, it just seems to quantum leapy but with life consequences. i preferred Sam who never got to go back over a guy who goes back everyday and has to convince everybody.

Somehow, I ended up watching it, and all I can say is: This show is REALLY GOOD. The acting, the story. All of it. It's held my attention and not only that, but it's gotten better week to week.

We need to make a preemptive strike on this. Waiting until the show gets cancelled won't help much, even Jericho only got a weak 7 episode order with no premiere date in sight. We need addresses, websites and if possible, phone numbers.

    by catvutt

Why not? Damages has already been renewed...there's nothing else I'd fight to save. This episode continued the trend of substantially pushing the arc forward. They've been pretty good about continuity for the most part, so it's going to be interesting how they explain away the gaps in everybody's memory. Dan remembers talking to Jack, but Jack doesn't...so where was Dan in this timeline when he should've been talking to Jack? Shit like that. There's bound to be stuff that works the other way around. Jack and Dan's wife with memories of stuff with Dan that he has no recollection of, no? Christ, I've had too much wine to get into a time-travel discussion.

    by la.cucaracha

I've noticed that they also sow reruns of Chuck, Bionic, and Heroes I think late Saturday nights. They have given up a night of possible original programing to show ther hit shows again? when the strike will take care of rerun possibilities and if anyone really wants to see the show again they can go to the NBC website and watch it there. Is this show so much of a drain of the finances that they can't just move it to a night that they aren't using anyway. Did they sink all of their money into Seinfeld's bee movie and lose the farm or something? Are they waiting for Bill Cosby to come back?

Here's an idea, why doesn't NBC poll viewers online???

    by bigfanboy

Since so much communication about what movies and TV shows are good and bad is online, why don't networks like NBC try polling viewers online to find out what we watch and what we think of their shows? Everyone I know that has seen JOURNEYMAN seems to like it. Everyone I know who watches LIFE seems to like it. And everyone I know who has watched BIONIC WOMAN (including me) seems to have a very "meh" reaction. Yet BIONIC WOMAN is promoted to a ridiculous degree, while JOURNEYMAN and LIFE and looked over constantly. NBC really needs to pull its head out of its ass. Oh, and FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS better not go anywhere either.

    by spank

Folks, we're expecting sanity and caring from a network that only sees inaccurate numbers that are supposed to translate to dollars. they don't care if the show is as smart as Journeyman or as sad and inane as Chuck ("Oh, oh- and then we can have him DATE, and the date's former boyfriend is an evil terrorist- yeah THAT would be funny!"- C'MON!!!!). Like Twin Peaks and Firefly this show just goes over the exec's heads as they stare at their innacurate ratings and wonder why the show doesn't show more skin ("Like, you see that blonde chick on Chuck's black panties almost every show- THAT'S HOT!!!). Excuse me for not being surprised that a little THINKING television is in trouble. I promise you that is the strike wasn't happening it would have been replaced long before now, just as the show is hitting it's stride, and replaced with something much less intelligent. can;t hgelp but thing that Life is next since they're running 2 eps of that 2 Mondays from now. sad really- that we'll probably have to buy the DVD season now in order to get anything answered. That's fine though because I planned on buying it anyway to show to friends that thought the show was a copy of Quantum Leap- Oh and to those that say Time travel stories don't work on TV, that REALLY explains all the high ratings dr. Who musters around the world. makes you wonder just how dumded down we as a country have become doesn't it?

has been a HUGE dissapointment this year to EVERYONE who liked it last year. No wonder Journeyman suffers when folks laugh at the Beavis and Butthead level humor of Chuck, then scratch their heads over the plot holes of Heroes (or tune out becuase of the redundances) and then get to watch a show that's actually thought through, intelligent, and connected to the previous eps- they've already chased off or confused anyone who wants to THINK along with their entertainment.

Maybe if NBC had a dollar for everybody that has said that about this show (it's damn near unanimous!) they wouldn't have to cancel the show. Sorry the show you like so much is on the verge of cancellation, but insulting the intelligence and taste of those who like other shows that might actually survive (Chuck) just makes you sound like a bitter child. Journeyman is OK, but we've all seen this before in other shows and movies. I watch TV to be entertained and educated. Chuck covers the first of those in spades and other shows take care of the smarts. But I feel as though, and its not just you, many have gotten so jaded that they won't even allow themselves to be entertained by anything anymore. Sure Chuck has a hot agent and a silly script and whatever, but since when was it wrong to be entertained by this? Its Monday, I just got off of work, Chuck and beer is just what I need. Besides, for all its goofiness, there are some clever bits of writing here and great performances. And lets face it, Journeyman wasn't gonna win any Emmy's itself.

    by spank

I didn't mean to imply that it was WRONG to watch Chuck- as you can tell by my posts that it's obvious that I do- it's just that the lowest common denomiator appeal and HORRIBLE plotting and writing makes it diffcult for me to keep watching, especially on a regular basis. I feel completely different about the appeal and level of intelligence that a show like Journeyman displays, especially to anyone willing to give the show an inkling of thought. Infantile humor has it's place, but don't expect me to stay entertained or not share an opinion of a flawed poorly done show that literally wastes good acting talent at the expense of maybe one or two barely ample situations a show, when there are shows of higher quality (perhaps not Emmy material, but at least TRYING), that are being threatened with cancellation and nostalsic "cult" status because some exec doesn't like the inaccurate demo numbers it's pulling. frankly Chuck makes Reaper look like HIGH quality television (same basic set-up but with a MUCH smarter level of adolescent humor). Journeyman has SUBSTANCE and is worth a little loyalty on the part of the studio execs than to just stop advertising and abandonment. You'd think NBC was Fox or something...

    Best New Show

    by tom reagan

It was just last week that I had to face it--Jouneyman is my favorite show of the season. My title says best NEW show but it might be the best show, period. I love Friday Night Lights, House, and I'm still watching Heroes but it's Journeyman that I really look forward to every week. I've been talking this up to everyone I know and I could probably get a lot of people on board but they're a) afraid the show will be canceled and b) hesitant to jump into the middle of of, what could be a confusing, season. by tom reagan

Just found out this show is on iTunes. I've already resolved to gift the season to a good friend and gift the first few episodes to some other friends. I'd normally wait for the dvds to come out and then pass them around between seasons but I'm afraid I won't have the time to stir up interest (like I did with Friday Night Lights). I'd hope that NBC would understand that a smart, mature show like this is going to be more of a slow build. The word of mouth on this show is excellent--almost all the naysayers I've heard on these talkbacks have seen one episode, "15 minutes" of an episode, or haven't seen anything beyond the promos but still want to stop by to tell those of us that do watch the show that it's a Quantum Leap rip-off.

Point taken. Although I think Chuck succeeds in doing exactly what it sets out to do. I usually HATE shows and movies that are cheesy or corny, but claim "Oh its ok because we were TRYING to be that way." (spiderman films) Chuck, especially in the first few eps, got a bit too corny for me, but since then I feel as though it found its way and does have clever writing and great performances. All I can say is the show works for me - a lot. In fact I look forward to it every week -it's just plain charming and entertaining and it has a love triangle (square?) that I actually find myself invested in. I hope and pray it survives and if so many feel the same about Journeyman then I wish you all the best as well. I think NBC has a perfect lineup going. Though I'm not a huge fan of Heroes this season, the progression from Chuck, to Heroes to Journeyman works well. As for Journeyman, well it just didn't grab me for whatever reason. Nothing wrong with it exactly -especially not enough to warrant a cancellation. Maybe I'll give it another shot somewhere down the line - especially if the strike screws up Lost. Or if 24 screws up 24.

    by catvutt

In some fairness to NBC, this is a difficult show to market. It's high-concept, but it's not at all flashy. Dan's not jumping around to a bunch of different eras, so promos can showcase exotic locales, everything seems to be taking place within his own lifetime, and in relative proximity to his home. The title is absolutely awful, something we tend to forget about because we've all been watching for awhile now. The color palette/cinematography has a muted, more serious look to it. I mean, I think it all works pretty well, but I can't say I've ever been at all motivated by one of the promos to check it out. I started watching sort of inadvertantly when I was still watching Heroes.

Great idea there NBC execs: let's cancel the only show on our Monday night line up where the ACTING & WRITING ARE NOTICABLY BETTER THAN OUR OTHER SHOWS. Genius idea there; just brilliant. Not to knock Chuck, which has it's own weird charm, or Heroes, which I love but if just having a fairly boring season so far (with the exception of the Four Months Ago episode which rocked), but Journeyman just gets better & better on a consistent basis & the actors should be commended for the work that they put in.

I watched the first three episodes of Journeyman and found it really boring, and I ussualy love time travel stuff. It seemed extremely repetative and unoriginal to me. Did I miss something? Some of y'all talk like it's really great. Has it improved a WHOLE LOT since then, or are we just disagreeing about the quality in general? I haven't seen Rome so I'm just judgeing this guy on his preformance on Journeyman. Perhaps some of the show's fans, who know what this actor is capable of, are seeing more subtlety/awesomeness than is actually on screen. And whats with a time travel show where he only goes back to the mid 80's! Seriously? I know, I know, it's on a limited budget. But still, Thats just limited creativity. You could make, like , ten years or so of the original Doctor Who series for the same money that guy makes for a single episode.

I honestly don't understand what people see in it.

There's also been some interesting developments with who is potentially behind the time traveling, where Liv comes from, consequences of his actions, his brother looking like he'll come around to believing is time jumping, the Feds on his case...And I like Kevin McKidd (since the beginning) in this and I've never seen him in Rome, so there we just disagree on.

    Overlord.

    by catvutt

As I've mentioned a couple of times in this and the other thread, I COMPLETELY get why some people gave up on it, as I honestly wasn't even paying much attention to it myself the first 4 weeks or so. But it really HAS gotten a lot more interesting, and it snuck up on me and, I think, a lot of other people. See if you can't sit through the last 3 or 4 Eps and see what you think. There's more continuity, more developments, and more advancements in the whole direction of the show. Whether it's been intentional or not, what we've been seeing is a slow burn from his discovery of these occurances, to the power he actually has to affect change, and now we're getting into seeing the serious ramifications of all of it, while there's obviously clues being dropped about the greater mystery as well. I'm telling you, I felt the same way you did after the first three, I just happened to keep sort of half-assed watching while I was doing other things...and it dragged me back in.

    The story and characters

    by steve_dooku

Go deeper and are more than just people bouncing around in time. Dan is a complicated person in a very complicated predicament that he has no idea why he is in it. His wife is a saint, he sees his old, thought to be dead girlfriend and it turns out SHE is a time jumper too. To make it more complicated, he is married to his brothers ex-girlfriend. There is a degree of humanity written into these characters I haven't seen on network TV in a long time. The writers now who to write. Last week, when Katie found the old photo of Liv, they could have had her just dig through the box, but they didn't. They had the FBI show up on another story thread and ransack their stuff. In the process the FBI exposes the photo for Katie to discover. Sure it might not seem like much but it sure is refreshing to see cause and effect written so well. They also set up "Dan changing the future" and had the audience believe (falsely) that his little boy disappeared because of something in the past - making Dan going back in time WAY more precarious than we are lead to believe. The guy who was locked up in prison because of Dan's actions will affect his life in the present now.

I might give it another chance to win me over, if it's going somewhere. I don't dislike Kevin McKidd, I didn't mean to say anything negative about the acting. I should have said; I know that if one of my favorite actors was in a show I would cut it way more slack than it deserves. For instance, I'll watch anything with Vincent Price in it, and any criticisms of his movies and TV appearances(Brady-Bunch-in-Hawaii included) fall on deaf ears with me.

Just started airing in the UK. Please don't cancel. Love everything about this show. Why are all the great shows getting cancelled or facing cancellation. Shame we can't help with the US ratings, but here's hoping that the message spreads your side of the pond and that all those people with the gizmo's that tally the ratings watch Journeyman for these important episodes.

    I like Journeyman

    by nonsensical

It started out a little slow but it's gotten much, much better. I can't believe that a show that I rolled my eyes at four weeks ago would air an episode that had me both estatic that the jackass brother was finally convinced and pissed when time was changed and it never happened. In my book if you can make me care about something like this then the writers are doing something right. Go ahead and cancel this NBC, it just means you don't get your audience and you can't give a show more than a season to find its legs and run. You're just as bad as Fox.

I think shows like this are the shows people will watch in like a year. This is what will gather the highest ratings. Journeyman and Life are just too early and sometimes being first for something means you die first too. Keep it around NBC, you'll thank us later.

    the quantum leap comparison

    by the_fin

why is it with 90% of those who hate this show have this underlining issue that there soft cuddly quantum leap show was canceled ages ago (a show saved from cancellation due to ratings and eventually let go for the same). get over it.

Do not look for original programing from the network that brought you x-men tv, new bionic (now with 80% more vagina), law and order x3, and countless reality crap. This show is smart and its something i really look forward to everyweek. I don't care where they move it, just keep new episodes coming.

    BBC for the win.

    by darthscotland

we obviously dont make a fraction of the number of watchable shows that come out of the US here in UK land, but at least we know that once a series starts we will get a full season out of it, plus no adverts and ability to move programs to lesser channels BBC2, BBC3 if it doesnt get good ratings but still 5 guys are watching, BBC FTW!! US TV style reminds me of impatient football chairmen 'just got the team promoted against all the odds with a bunch of useless morons and now your struggling to stay up in a league with far better opposition with same morons, well obviously your fired before you can improve the team and come back even stronger next year'

...but it conflicts with my work schedule. I ended up watching the first ep, wasn't all that impressed, and removed it from my DVR. NBC really needs to start doing what CBS has been doing the past few years and provide episodes On Demand so we can try them out on our own time on our TVs. Video on demand from their website is substandard viewing, buggy at times, and not all that comfortable.

DVR viewings shoud count in ratings

    by big jim

Here's why: When I watch live tv I almost never watch commercials. When the ads come on I switch to something else. However, when I watch a show I have recorded I fast-forward through the ads. If something catches my eye I will stop and let it play. And even if I don't let it play, those images flashing-by probably still register in my sub-concious, like subliminal advertising. So really, watching DVR'd shows is probably better for advertisers than watching the show live.

does anyone actually watch live tv much these days anyways ? i rarely watch any show live, but lots of times my dvr is recording 2 shows at once..i believe i did hear something about gettin ratings from dvr recordings and internet viewings.....and the thing about ratings.....they are not the only measure by which a network keeps or cancels a show... i know lots of u love watching the ratings of shows like lost and heroes, saying theyre gonna get cancelled...it has a small part to play. if a network wants to keep a show on the air it will..despite sucky ratings..angel in season 5 had its highest ratings in the shows history and still got cancelld... the network explained they wanted to bring on new shows, and keep 7th heaven..it was financial, not ratings...and CHUTCH putting journeyman in the same sentence with cavemen and chuck is insulting to journeyman...if chuck survives and this dont ill be upset...its a one note show, with no drama, cept for all the retards out there that wanna see chuck and the hot blonde fuck...bionic woman is also a potentially great show..it seems to be improving with each episode..just wish they would get back to the "boyfriend had a dossier on u for 2 yrs before u met" arc...kville dont work because its a "lets feel sorry for louisiana" crap that u knew someone was going to make somewhere... a movie of some sort is in the works, u know it..and anthony anderson in a dramatic role ?? were they doing bad weed ?? its laughable.... and all u people that actually watch "dancing with the has-been stars" reality shows are luckily unscripted so u will get to see all of those suck fests.....did i miss something or is tia tequila not that good looking ? american idol is a non issue, has the winner of the last 2 actually done anything ?? none of the winners actually do anything good.....its always the people that come in 2nd or 3rd that do lots.....ala....daughtry, katherine mcfee, that jewish guy that sounds black....please no one mention that country singer or fantasia.... sickening.....the only winner that actually made something of themselves is kelly clarkson....and for a show that has judges they do very little judging past the prelims.... they leave the voting to the likes of the same people that voted for george bush...scary...theyre are too many reality shows on mtv and vh1 that require the viewer to watch some self centered , self absorbed semi famous hooch that no one heard of before..and have them gothru a bevy of men or women or both to find someone they want to "fall in love" with....tequila and new york...throw in some midgets and staged fights and what u get is 2 shows for the dumb people in our population.....a growing # if u look at what people actually watch as opposed to scripted shows....u know why scripted shows are losing ratings ? because u have to actually think and remember more than who got voted off last week...too hard for many of u lazy american turds..... i think the strike will do one of two things to reality shows, depending on the length of the strike.....either people will want more cuz thats all there is or people will get so sick of reality shows that no one will watch them anymore once the strike is over.....thats my personal fave, kill reality shows....cept for survivor....i record 15-20 shows a week at seasons peak....most are scripted cept for survivor...somehow i keep up with every show..dont know how , but i do....hope the strike is over next week when the writers and studios get back together......cross ur fingers , and save journeyman
