Spock's Daddy Is...

Published at:  Nov 19, 2007 11:23:13 AM CST

Merrick here...

...BEN CROSS. So says his official web site.

Cross' career ranges from greatness (CHARIOTS OF FIRE) to poop (S.S. DOOMTROOPER), with many stops in-between.

TrekMovie has an interesting side-by-side comparison of Cross next to Mark Lenard, who originated the role of Sarek. You can see that HERE.

Cross has never struck me as being a terribly dimensional actor (although this characterization may be unfair - I haven't see much of his work). At first glance, this might make him uniquely suited to play Spock's father. However, Mark Lenard's iteration of Sarek (seen in THE ORIGINAL SERIES as well as THE NEXT GENERATION) was often surprisingly nuanced...almost imperceptibly conveying range and depth while upholding a severe veneer.

Can Cross pull-off this layering? We'll see...

Although vulcans live longer (and prosperer) than humans, in TOS, Sarek looked in his forties. In a prequel to TOS he should appear younger, no?

this movie has had so much hype

    by jackgraham

i love the original trek movies with shatner and the gang, parts 2 3 4 and 6 being my favourites, and im curious to see what they do with this one, but with all the casting news and all the hype surrounding it its got alot on its space continual hands, i dnt recall any of the previous trek movies having this kinda build up, but obviously this is no ordinary trek movie, i hope im proved wrong but i sense that this movie is gonna crumble under the weight of expectation, with so many characters involved im worried its gonna be a bit of a mess, and jj abrams is obviously a fan but am i the only one who felt mission impossible 3 was a complete bore. id love to grab hollywood execs by the balls and shout in their god damned ears the following bit of insight "great stunts, great action do not make a great movie, great characterisation, great script, great acting does, dnt even think of rolling a camera until u know for sure that u have those elements in place and that ur confident that the picture ur about to embark on will be worthwile"
but hey what do i know, im jst a fan.

    by yotzvonfrelnik

Dark Shadows: 1991 is where I got my first exposure to the guy. He was a great updating on the Barnabas character. Very Nosferatu in his physical presence, while having a certain romantic charm as well. Yeah, I think he'll project range well, if he handles the role properly.

who will be cast as Sibock

    by bullet_time_facehugger

You know, Sarek's first son, and Spock's half brother who became an emotional prophet or some nonsense and was the big bad in Star Trek V. They should cast Jack Black. It would make about as much sense as Karl Urban playing bones.

The reason there is so much hype about this movie is because its the first Star Trek movie not going to use a cast from the TV show. Though I do agree, once all the casting is announced, I would not like to hear anything about this movie except maybe a site visit and a teaser trailor. But I feel we will have update overkill like the new Batman.

Lyrics to the song "Help Me Spock", by Warp 11

    by warp11

    HELP ME SPOCK

Help me Spock, the shields are down
    The wormhole's caving in
I been up and down the galaxy
And I never seem to win

I got a forlorn Gorn and he’s at my back
and he ain’t preaching “No kill I”
Well he’s slow and green and really, really mean
And that f***** just won't die

    So please, please
    Help me Spock

Well a Klingon bastard killed my son
And the Nexus took my life
And if I had the chance, I’d do it all again
And take a green bitch for my wife

Yeah I was getting fat, feeling old
And my hair was getting thin
I been up and down the galaxy
and I never seem to win

    So please, please
    Help me Spock

Seems like a simple enough concept. And yet I've seen plenty of people going "That guy who plays Spock is a terrible actor, but man, put a wig on him and he looks just like a young Leonard Nimoy! thing that bothers me the most

    by crweb

You know, I'm sure this film is a bitch to try and cast. I love classic Trek and would really like to see more stories of classic trek. I also understand that the original actors who played those roles can no longer do so. Sure they could go out and find exact doubles for the original actors but they probably would not have the talent to play the roles. So they try to find actors who bare a resemblence to the original actors and can also act. They have no choice. OK, I can live with that, even thou some of the casting has seemed more than a bit wacked. But the thing that bothers me the most is reading that they have redesigned the Enterprise. Why? This more than anything else will probably keep me from seeing this movie. This is just stupid.
