The Trailer for What WILL Win Best Animated Film This Year - Hits in Stunning HD Quicktime!
Hey folks, Harry here... I know that sometimes, when I pull an AICN SECRET SCREENING people are automatically thinking something BIG and MAINSTREAM... but sometimes, what I'm programming is something that's just frigging BRILLIANT.
That was the case this year at FANTASTIC FEST when I got Sony Classics to allow us to screen for the first time in the United States... PERSEPOLIS. Back when I saw the film, I stated that it should win the award for Best Animated film... and as much as I love BEOWULF & RATATOUILLE... this traditionally animated brilliant work.
The complaint I heard from some was wondering aloud why it was animated?
The reason is simple. The story is epic, but it is told and adapted in the best form given that it is adapted from a Graphic Novel - of the same look and style.
What's particularly remarkable about the film is how it engages us to see a young girl growing up the turmoil of war ravaged and ideologically stormy Iran.... and to see her and her family as we would our own, but the regime that they're living under. It's funny, traumatic, sad and absolutely captivating. The style in which it is animated is absolutely classic. Great look. Check out this trailer and see the film when it comes to a theater near you.

That looks boring as hell. I even like the animation styles, and have no issue with the subject matter... but it still seems really dry and well... boring. Also, I'm not sure that the visual aesthetic juxtaposing the the actual type of story being told is going to work in a full length feature. I'll wait until someone other than the big ginger guy is messing his or her pants over this before I regauge my interest.
-
Er, what is this TB about?
-
That's cool and everything, but... better than BeoWulf... ? Nope. Sorry.
-
Thank you Harry.
-
I've read the books and this movie looks great, but was it really a good idea to use white on black subtitles on a black and white film? Are we supposed to be able to read those?
-
Gay. Yup, that was really gay.
-
...not bad. Intresting to see AICN got a quote in there. Any hope of seeing it overdubbed with American voices? I just hate having to constantly read subtitles when I'm trying to admire animation.
-
I'm going to have to have to hunt down the comic, looks interesting. Definitely not a good idea using black subtitles though.
-
I know I know its artsy fartsy and moving. ok
-
Ironic that I know women who live in the US who are persecuted for dressing like that.
-
I could draw this film with my kids.. eastern european bullshit.
-
Can't wait to see it. Revolutionary filmmaking this is.
-
I'm still pissed that I missed-out on an opportunity to see this film this past Saturday. Thanks for reminding me. I chose to go to a Broken Social Scene show instead and now I'll probably have to wait until next year to see Persepolis.
-
you have good taste. You'll put this on your year-end top ten list, great. Just don't ask me to go see it. I don't need to be preached to by a fucking cartoon. Sorry but I burned out on Robert Redford already.
-
I hope it's enjoyable
-
There's so much power and flexibility. But as with all artistic mediums it's not meant to be the only means of telling a story. Though I haven't seen this, I can't help but think that it would've been more powerful as a live action film. It's much harder to evoke emotional subtlety and depth with animation. But I wouldn't want to judge it without having seen it.
-
I can't wait to see this. ^_^
-
...what jerk drew the bikini top on Angelina Jolie in that Beowulf ad in the top right hand corner?
-
Some of the comments on this board make me want to vomit, for real. Iranian South Park? "I could draw this with my kids?" Wow. Yeah, because the ONLY way to do an animated film is to make it look like the X-men comics, or like Pixar. People suck on here.

When they finally paint over "Death to America" on the abandoned
by immortal_fish
When they finally paint over "Death to America" on the abandoned embassy, then and only then will I sympathize for the plight of Iranian civilians. Until then, fuck 'em.Dubya "talks to god" and is labeled insane by half the country. Ahmawhackajob talks to a little boy that lives at the bottom of a well and we let him speak at Columbia. Something is wrong with this picture. Meanwhile, AICN waxes poetic about Iranian life. Count me out.
-
Cos it will have cool action and blood.
-
Did not expect all the angry feedback...I'm pretty excited for this.
-
this is a story about a girl who REBELS AGAINST the Islamic revolution...get it?
-
Has anyone Volume 2. I've read V.1 and liked it, should I read V.2 before seeing the movie.
-
This was a great film. Had a Triplettes de Belleville quality, but with a far edgier more political quality. Thanks Harry!
-
...who use "gay" as in insult. It's so wonderfully childish and ignorant. Although, we all have to leave middle school eventually.
-
make it's way to the trailer? That was quick.
-
Well, for the heady subject matter, perhaps, but certainly not for the art. I'm sorry, but I've seen better art on Cartoon Network. It looked like the kinda stuff you see on comedy central or something.Intriguing premise, however.
-
in the strict sencse of the word. Saw it in French however, where the dubbing was ABYSMAL. Maybe the english track will bring some life to it. It won't change the fact, however, than it has absolutely no fucking reason to be turned into a clumsy, poorly-conceived animated feature. It was way better in a comic book (oh, sorry, "graphic novel") form.
-
come on. they think animated = kids film. That's all. GREAT book btw.
-
Alexander The Great burned down persepolis to please his awnry generals in 330 BC. Sorry bub. No such place actually exists anymore. Ergo, this film is crap.Changing topics, why aren't you talking about Love In The Time of Cholera? Oh my what cool news that would be!
-
adaptation. I'm also excited about this. Normally you only have two choices in animation: kids stuff and anime. I like some of the kids stuff (maybe one movie a year) and some of the anime (although at times more violent it's often just as juvenile as the kid's stuff) so its nice to see animation that doesn't fall into those two overworn categories.
-
Some scary fucks on this talkback.
-
Shrek III will get a nominated before that artsy French animated flick. Seriously... stop with your bullshit Hyperbole. You are going to be a dad soon, and he or she needs a dad whose not full of shit most of the time. DO IT FOR THE CHILDREN! THE CHILDREN!
-
First off, calling people dumb fucks in the talkback isn't nice. Calling them beef curtains however is hilarious and more than appropriate and even warranted. Try that next time.Secondly, I think what ol Immortal Fish is trying to say is he can't possibly sympathize with the "plight" of the iranian people considering they elected A'jad in a democratic process, thus, they got what they asked for.AND...perhaps he's also saying that it was "the people" who lead the iranian revolution and brought Khomeini back from exile and ushered in their own now very pathetic, sad existence. My guess is he's thinking: why watch this movie when the people got what they wanted? You really can't feel sorry for or sympathize with someone (or the main character of this movie) who's upset that they got what they asked for.AND NO MATTER WHAT YOU THINK THE PEOPLE OF IRAN WANTED KHOMEINI AND BOY DID THEY GET HIM AND HIS BIG BUNCH OF NUTBALLS! Finally Immortal Fish must be thinking: hey, why see this movie? Why waste my time and money feeling sad for iranians, especially the women, who insisted on wearing burqas back in the 70s despite the shah's men slicing them off? Especially now when all they want to do is dress like slutty american women?Personally I do feel sorry for them because as a happily married man I love to check out slutily-dressed women, especially persian ones. Perhaps if bush bombs them slutily-dressed women will the first result!
-
Here we have, from what I can tell, a condemnation of extremist Islam and a celebration of ideal American values of freedom of expression, and people are like, "Fuck Iran." I don't get it-- what trailer are you watching?
-
I can agree with you 100% that there are some scary FOLKS in this talkback tonight. In fact, I've seen ALOT of new names lately. This feels like a good thing, as I can only assume word of AICN has finally made it to the general populace and thus they're signing up for U'IDs and posting on this very talkback!
-
As I mentioned in some other Talkbalk, this screened at the Telluride by the Sea thing in September. Superb. The animation style lends itself perfectly to the material and it's as affecting or more than any live-action film you'll see this year. And not depressing, flat-out hilarious in many places. Gotta get out and support this one, guys. Seriously. Great, great stuff.
-
HEY FLICKAPOO...AND IMMORTAL FISH TOO!.......to answer your question. that is all.
-
The answer, of course, is movies are not your mommy, and cannot force you to care about anything.
-
Wow. That's a geek high. They pulled those exact words out of my Toronto review.
http://www.aintitcool.com/node/34065 -
and a good point you made.
revolutions and their results are a tough topic to discuss considering the american revolution lead to the greatest democractic/capitalist experiment ever; the french revolution lead to the greatest socialist/welfare state experiment ever; and the iranian (or islamic) revolution lead to the greatest false democracy/fractured economy ever.I suppose its hard to care about the plight of anyone regardless of reason these days considering our self-absorbed nature...or is that just me who's self-absorbed? -
EOP.
-
Seriously. I wouldn't have expected my reaction to the film that I had based on that trailer. It's not that bleak. It's dark material, and it's very dark and somewhat brutal in places, but it's also very lively and full of solid humor, both light and dark. The grandmother is hysterical, the family dynamic is totally believable, and the simple animation style actually makes the characters easier to relate to. I dunno. I admit it. I'm a big gushy fan geek for the film, and it's very damn rare that I get that way about anything.
-
this is not a story about "poor Iranians", it is the story of one girl and her family...if your country was suddenly taken over by crazy fascist Episcopalians and you had to flee you would probably have a pretty good story to tell too.
-
And read about the plight of women in a post-islamic revolution on wikipedia for free: The Islamic revolution is ideologically committed to inequality for women in inheritance and other areas of the the civil code; and especially committed to segregation of the sexes. Many places, from "schoolrooms to ski slopes to public buses", are strictly segregated. Females caught by revolutionary officials in a mixed-sex situation can be subject to virginity tests. "Bad hijab" ― exposure of any part of the body other than hands and face — is subject to punishment of up to 70 lashes or 60 days imprisonment.see? now you can skip the movie and send me your money! Uncle Deus always takes care of folks. Just call me a father figure...speaking of which, any young, hot, lonely 19 year old girls looking for a father figure tonight in the talkbacks?
-
Don't forget Chavez nationalized the oil fields and kicked out all the vile capitalist companies! Libs LOVE nationalizing/socializing everything! Down with free enterprise! Up with the welfare state! But only if the libs who instituted it get to run it, otherwise they'll settle for a majority in the house or the senate or both..........
-
first - theyve already announced the shortlist. second - its foreign language, which means it will be pigeonholed as such and will not get mainstream attention, and that includes academy votersThis ain't gettin nominated for shit, much less winning
-
Cartoons are dubbed by nature, even in their native language...so is it too much to ask? If its a stylistic choice... it makes it seem pretentious.
-
I saw this as FF, and it was a great movie. I was so drawn into the story that you forget it's animated. It doesn't glorify any ideology, it doesn't try to preach, it just tells one girls story. I will definately be seeing this again and have already recommended to all my friends.
-
This is one of the most widely praised movies of the year, was a hit at every film festival including Cannes (Jury Prize), is based on a graphic novel (something I know a great deal of you read) and has already gained major controversy from Iran. This should be a dream for all of you, but I guess if you mention something even remotely art-house, the culture bums rise up. Expand your goddamn horizons, low-brow zealots.
-
Blue, red, green, yellow, purple, black and brown were real excited to be working again.... The rest were just pissed because they had to stop boozing and get back to work.....
-
White subtitles on a black and white film are hard to read. No way this wins.
-
while reading over my shoulder: "The people who post here are idiots."
Guess the creators should've gone with plan B and cooked up a Red Band trailer that shows only the violent bits. That would've got TBers in the seats. -
Yet another talkback that sets cinema back ten years. Christ Almighty!
-
There has been incredible idiocy in the talkbacks on this site probably since its inception.
-
...but we've been at a fucking zenith all year.
-
Iran inspires this kind of reaction in Americans (of which I'm one) and it's not all unjustified. Since people (everywhere) tend to paint things in broad strokes I think it would be more surprising if you didn't find some "They got what they asked for" type comments in here. There are American men who fought in WWII who still harbor hatred for the Japanese and Germans. It's not that hard to find people in the American south who carry around a heavy bias against people from the north. In fact it's easy. They learned it from parents and grandparents and probably never met anyone who had a halfway justifiable reason to hate the yankees but the dislike lives on. The Iran hostage crisis was only what? A little under 30 years ago?
-
how about first you write - AND illustrate, which few people do - your own graphic novel? i bet you're not only really good authors, but you're excellent illustrators as well. you could get it printed by booksurge, it only costs like $500, and then give copies to all your friends and tell them you've 'published' something. we all can't wait to see your awesome drawings!
-
on this talkback. We have everything from "gay" to "it looks stoopid", to some kids that just heard "pretentious" from their parents and decided to use it everywhere without really knowing what it means. It's sad to see that these are the same people that bitch about the lack of originality in Hollywood. All they want is tits and blood, which is exactly why Hollywood keeps shitting those movies out all the time without anything smart or thought-provoking, in other words original. When I heard about this movie I was expecting something completely different, to be perfectly honest I really wasn't sure WHAT I was expecting. After watching this, I can truly understand why they decided to create the movie this way. It absolutely would not have worked as live-action. It's simple yet entirely effective. It's an animated version of a graphic novel...simple as that. And the story looks intelligent and really tells a well-thought out story, which is something we haven't seen in ages. I can't wait to see this.
-
But then you could read them.
-
It sucks that arabs decided to be trouble makers this century. They're not an interesting people, they're boring and middle eastern culture make for really shitty movies.
-
are the reason why I mostly go to CHUD now. What a bunch of reactionary, inbred hicks we have here now...

I'm an immature brat? While I do agree that insults such as "gay" or "stupid" are childish, I can understand why people would be turned off by the animation. It looks like it was produced on a shoe-string budget, one fit only for television. Yes, the subject matter does seem very, very interesting, but the animation looks like stuff you find on youtube, and no matter how much it may be like the graphic novel, it still looks cheap even on my three inch view window. I can't even imagine how it would look on the big screen.Anyway, I can't speak for the others in this talkback, but I can say that I understand how the visuals (really, its just cheap animation) of this film could turn off viewers, particularly the pubescent highschool and college circuits that make up the bulk of this site's audience.

No, moondoogy, it's not because you don't like the visuals.
by lenny nero
It's the way people have jumped on this for being foreign, for being different, for having a subject matter not-so-normal. I personally can defend the low-key animation, because it fits the world of the graphic novel as well as the darkly comic themes. I wouldn't want it bright and next-gen and pretty. But you are entitled to your opinion, as long as you back it up without sounding like a moron. And you aren't a moron, moondoggy, since you actually used personal evidence as to your opinion.
-
in the middle east over the ideas presented in this film.
-
Is it?
-
I do agree that next-gen animation would look out of place, but I still wish that the black and white animation was a bit more sophisticated than something that was created for a website or something. It does have an interesting premise, however, and I will be checking it out, but only as a rental. On a side note, I wonder why it wasn't filmed live-action? Yeah, I realize that its supposed to mirror the graphic novel and all that, but there are a lot of shows out there that have been able to do this without resorting to direct-to-video animation. Then again, to be brutally honest, there would be no chance they could film this in Iran. I'm curious as to whether or not they would even be able to film the damn thing without causing a riot.
-
The art concept here is SIMPLICITY. Not due to "shoe-string budgets". You think they chose black and white instead of color to "save money"? Man,there's some Mega Fucktards posting here....sshheesshh. Ya, you know...Monet sucks too...no detail man!!!
-
There is a difference between black and white animation and animation that doesnt even have enough frames to simulate fluid motion. Its not because its black and white, doctor who, its because the overly thick lines, complete lack of detail, and anemic frame rates. Simplicity? Yeah, sure, whatever. There is such a thing as being too simplistic. Why don't I just take a ren and stimpy cartoon, adjust the color settings, and blow it up on the big screen while I'm at it, too.
-
Nov 14, 2007 11:38:41 PM CST
I know! Lets have the Power Puff Girls in black and white
by moondoggy2u
and I'll have them talk about the feminist movement and the liberation of Mary Wollstonecraft. Heady, no?
-
Not even frames to simulate fluid motion? Looks pretty fluid to me. Slow speed over there on the moondoggy computer? No, it's not as fluid as a new Disney movie, but then again, neither was my favorite animated film, "The Sword and the Stone." Yeesh.
-
Is that the style IS intentional. And honestly, for me, it's a hell of a lot MORE effective for it. It was a wise choice, and five minutes into the film, you're into the story completely. If you've ever read Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics, you can sorta relate it to the Pictoral Vocabulary triangle thing, with this more iconic style falling into the area closer to words and away from photo-realism. It allows a greater relationship between reader/viewer and the subject on a visceral level. Anyway, I'm probably biased. I just think it's a beautifully realized work.
-
but it's how marjane satrapi chose to tell her story. not every artist out there draws the exact same manga or disneyfied shit, after all. maybe now we'll see some cool chris ware stuff, or even - dare to dream - a fucking rad animated creature tech!
-
All joking aside, however, both you and CatVutt do make excellent points, and this truly is just a case of my bonheaded opinion versus others' opinions. From my perspective, and again, this is just my perspective, I wouldn't be turned off by the film if it were just this flaw or that flaw (at least, what I consider flaws), but when there is just a gluttony of problems, such as elephant sized matte lines, low frame rates, extreme lack of detail (even by computer monitor standards), and I just lose interest in seeing this on some matinee sized screen.By the way, Nero, my internet connection is cable, so its just fine--the animation isn't very fluid. Oh, its all right on tv, perhaps, but if it were blown up for the silver screen, those frame rate issues would DEFFINITELY rear their ugly head. I know that sounds like a small issue, but for me, that sort of jumpiness always gives me a headache. It's why I could never get into manga or movies involving an inordinate ammount of jumpcuts: too much nausea, man, too much nausea.
-
saw it at fantastic fest, BORING, CLICHE, and HORRIBLE ANIMATION....YUCK!
-
I'm not looking photo realism. If I've given that impression, then I appologize. Its just that I tend to prefer a bit more sophisticated animation than what was shown in that trailer, especially when going to the theater. It has nothing to do with Disney and McAnimation, its just that it seems rather cheap to present television-quality animation as some sort of oscar worthy, awe-inspiring didactic masterpiece. Just my take on it, and feel free to write my opinion off as being that of an uncultured boob if you wish, but it is how I feel.

Fair enough. "Renaissance" gave me a headache in a different way
by lenny nero
Good movie, but goddamn did I need some aspirin after that.
-
It was as beautiful to look at as any live action movie this year.
-
And it deserves to win.
I'm sure Persepolis is great, don't get me wrong. -
i think jon lovitz in black and white wouldnt look out of place.
-
THE ENDER SMITES FOES! Come on down and claim your prize.
-
I never read the book, though. And, I haven't seen one animated movie this year sadly.
-
Be the first to see this year's really-important-socially-responsible -arthouse film before all those other latte-suckers! Remember how bad you felt when they saw Crash, Babel and The Three Burials Of Some Innocent Mexican Guy before you? Almost as bad as when you saw them yourself and realized they were kind of preachy crap? Well, don't delay! Crowd into your local artfag emporium, buy a fifteen dollar cup of cappuccino, and pretend to enjoy...PERSEPOLIS!!!
-
That was gay how pathetically gay you were...gay gay gay gay. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
And now if you could hand me that award. -
Oh wait, that's me!
-
17-23 mil for the weekend is my predDICKtion
-
This film looks freaking amazing to me, but you are batshit insane if you think it will win an Oscar. It's far too strange. (I'm still in shock that Spirited Away managed to get one!) Don't get me wrong, I can't wait to see it, but my money is on Ratatouille come Oscar time.
-
The thing that has always puzzled me about this site is how the readers of it are often so closed off to certain types of films. It's really weird because the creator and writers of the site champion everything. I question Harry's taste from time to time but he likes film, not just mainstream studio films. The majority of talkbackers here seem to only be interested in genre movies, which is sad. The great thing about a site like this (and if we've learned nothing from Ratatouille) and critics in general is they can recommend films that might get lost otherwise. They guide the taste of the nation. Some of the criticism here is just moronic. A person looks at this trailer and says the movie looks "gay." I don't even know what that means. Either the film looks really happy or homosexual. If you think something looks unappealing then come up with a better and more intelligent way of expressing yourself.

Is because "they" are merely teenagers. I don't care what these posters say to defend themselves or how strenuously they purport themselves to be older than they are, they are in fact around 14 years old or so. Maybe as old as 18. No one older than that, who is at least nominally capable of self-sufficiency, speaks like that. "You're gay, ha ha. That's gay, huh huh. Dude, that's sick!" At the end of the day, Barry, you have to keep in mind that you are trying to correct the behavior of a teenager via the talkback segments of a website. I teach many of these little bastards day in and day out and believe me, its hard enough to correct their behavior in person, let alone a talkback.
-
As a piece of art this film looks amazing...and for all you who doubt the emotional impact of this movie..all you need to do is pick up the comic and have a read. Anyone who appreciates Art Spiegelman's Maus will love this.
This made Time magazines best comics of 2003, pick it up or wait for the movie to find out why. -
My sentimental favorite is still Ratatouille (and little is likely to change that), but I'd like to catch this one at some point in the future.
-
I hope it looks better on the big screen because from where I'm sitting it looks almost like a well drawn episode of South Park. The movie looks like he has a great story and a big heart, but I can't say I want to run out to see this one because of the animation. I know it's based on a funny book but I just don't see why people are this excited about it.
-
But I don't know if it's Oscar material. Even after seeing the trailer I'm still pulling for Ratatouille. Now bring on Wall-E.
-
get a clue, this is propagandic garbage in the first degree
-
I wanted to write a review of Persopolis, but never got around to it. It is a good movie, and DOES deserve to win for best animated film ... It just happens to have the misfortune to be a French animated film about growing up in Iran. The only drawback is that it is a little anti-climatic at towards the end ... it is a biographical tale, and the main character's life just doesn't have the kind of arc that lends itself to a spectacular finish.
I love Pixar and Studio 4C as much as the next guy, but this film really demonstrates the potential of the medium. American animation has a long way to go, in terms of the stories it's willing to tell. What distinguishes Persoplis is that it's not fantastic or escapist, like most feature length animation, yet still very expressive, in ways that only work in the medium.
Animation students should check it out. While it may lack the technical wizardy of computer animation (all this pixel-fucking is kind of getting boring), it makes up for it with great storytelling. It's a clinic on veteran storyboarding. There's moments where the film just grips you, and looking back on it you realize they did it with three static black and white illustrations cut together perfectly. Anyone that knows anything about animation would know that the animation isn't "simple", it actually really smart, efficient and maximizes its limitations. It's would be like accusing Samurai Jack of being "simple" ... it's just not.
For all you knee-jerk right-wingers ... I really hope you see it. I mean, I hope everyone see it. This is NOT a bullshit "movie" like Lion for Lambs or Fahrenhiet 911. It's not a polarizing movie like Redacted. This film has broad appeal politically and broad appeal as entertainment. In a way, it's a pro-war and pro liberty movie. You could even argue it's a pro-American movie.
I won't get into the details(I'm tired), but how many movies have a 9 year old Iranian girl trying to find bootleg tapes of Black Sabbath? It's a truely original story, and a compelling and insightful perspective on the Muslim world.
What sucks is that the people that this film is made for (Iranians) will never get the chance to see it. -
For tricking me into watching that stupid ass artsy fartsy frenchy bull shit. My balls told me I didn't deserve to have them attached because I actually made it half way through that crap. Fuck, now I have to go stab myself in the eyeballs with a dull butter knife.
-
ill pass on anything pro-iranian...we leave the mid east and they are coming heavy...believe that.
-
If its about the middle east, I don't even wanna hear about it, let alone see it. I'm so sick of it all.
-
It's way better than most television animation in terms of storyboarding, and blows bullshit like Shrek out of the water. The rendering is deliberately simple to match the tone of the graphic novel ... If you had to measure it's fanciness on a scale, it's better than television but nothing compared to Ratatouille. But as an artistic decision, it's more daring. The animation is very fluid when it needs to be, and very still when it doesn't.
And in terms of being "Oscar-worthy", it does have a very unique and intelligent screenplay going for it. I mean, the Animation Oscar is supposed to be about more than pretty pictures ... or some bullshit like Transformers would win. -
It's actually ANTI Iranian. You haven't even see the movie.
Maybe you should wait until your balls drop before you post messages on the interweb. -
fuck iran and the horse they came in on. its because of them this debacle is going on....
if saddam hadn't feared iran and lied to them about WMD's(so they would fear iraq and not invade them)...our troops would be chillin instead of sucking sand. Fuck Iran -
with subtitles and not from a country I know anything about. Plus, it's about a girl! And when I think about it, that smart mouthed rat was pretty funny in that Pixar film. Oh, boy he got a tomato in his face pretty good. So, based on this trailer, I just can't decide which film is the bestest animation ever!
Yeah the talkbacks always attract a number of mouth breathers wandering around cyberspace looking for a fight but the level of ignorance on display here is shameful and a little sad. If every film looked like the peerless Pixar and many have tried to push that production line crap on us, what a sorry state animation would be in. -
holy smokes, did you actually pay money to go see this shit?! was "no country for old men" sold out? fuck you
-
it needs ninjas.... lots and lots of ninjas...
-
Now I understand why people don't want to see it. That trailer blows. Ignore the trailer and give it a chance.
-
If the Reagan Administration hadn't given satellite photos and CIA intel to Iraq and weapons to the Iranians in order to perpetuate a grisly war than maybe there won't be militant Islamic extremists trying to fly planes into your buildings.
The US's hijinks in Iran and Iraq predate the current war by 50 years or so. There's plenty of good and bad reasons why they're right now. -
Agreed. My friend works at Pixar, and the people there would probably agree with you to. Stylistically, they know it's not good for them to continue being as conservative as they have been. I think you'll see them diversify.
-
April fools day is not for another few months, fella. Behave.
-
it is indeed the best film I've seen this year.
-
...than to post about any film that has a message relevant to the current state of world affairs on this site. Unless it has 50 billion dollars worth of special effects and tits in it, no one on this site will get it. That's the AIC demographic.
-
The animation, however only looks to serve the story and the journeys of the main characters without the distractions of CGI backdrops and hitech swooping around cities etc. So I dont think the animation is Oscar winning caliber going by what I see from the trailer. Surely Ratatouille/Beowolf are the obvious and deserving contenders for that? But I look forward to watching this movie and be swept by its story.
-
Just to be clear, I love Pixar no one can touch them but their success has led to many inferior imitations and who wants that? Talkbackers attacking an animated film for not looking like Pixar is like saying an action move won't work unless it looks like a Micheal Bay film. Since when was the style more important than the content?
-
When will people realise that every film can be improved with the addition of ninjas and/or giant robots. Its simple math. For example; sure Atonement was good...but now imagine it with ninjas. Or Nazi robots... Box office gold!
-
and if that's gonna win an oscar it'll be for the bandwaggon everyones jumping. So animation can be deep and thought provoking.....YAWN..!
-
I will definitely check it out. AICN might be right about it winning Best Animated Feature if only for the fact that it deals with Middle East Baddie Du Jour, Iran. And we all know how the Academy likes to think it is making a statement by picking a film with some sort of relevancy to today's world.
Either that or the film is just that good, guess we'll find out in the next few months. -
someone slipped you some cash under the table to write that, huh? *tsk* *tsk* (eh, fuck it...if someone slipped me cash to write a hyping article, i would have done it too)
-
give the best film the award?
-
Sorry, all. Premature posting. My wife hates that about me!
-
GreyGeek will now use his amazing powers to predict the future of this film! First, regardless of the Harry hyperbole (which we never hear enough of) this movie will not win best animated picture. Second, regardless of how good or bad it is almost no one will go and see it because it will never get distributed wide in this country (it’s black and white; it must be an art film). Third, some dipshit Imam will issue a Fatwa against the movie because it depicts God talking to a girl or something. Fourth, it will come out on video, Harry will mention it on the site, and all the inflammatory rhetoric will start up again on these posts. Now if you will excuse me, I am going to go back to watching my VHS copy of “Wizards”.
-
I was expecting something with better animi than this. It looks fan made. No way I'm seeing this.
-
but Bigger, Longer and Uncut is a fucking awesome movie the animation lends itself to the content as it doesn in the case of the GN that this film is based on and from the trailer the film follows suit. Sometimes ugly can beautiful, you know.
-
. . . Pakistanimation.
-
... do you even KNOW any Iranians? No, of course not, because you're a bigoted, ignorant winger. Otherwise you'd know that no one has suffered more under Iran's current regime than... Iranians. Those nutjob mullahs who control the government (Ahmaddinejad is just a useful puppet installed in an "election" that was about as fair and open as the old Soviet Era elections) have literally murdered uncounted tens and maybe hundreds of thousands of people. I have a Persian friend who had several family members killed because they were Bahai, and another who's brother was executed and her family billed for the bullets used. So dude... don't blame ALL Iranians for their government... they'd love to have the freedom to speak out, but can't... the price is too high. And one more thing... even after reading your bigoted ranting... they'd never tell you to "fuck off"!
-
Nothing pleases me more than seeing someone "Stick it to the man" and break away from conformity. But realy, this just seems like a Fellini version of Foot Loose.

RAMBO is on his way.......all will be better soon.....

This is as Political as I'm gonna get - Kid Z, and Immortal Fish
by nesstar
Kid Z - I know of several Americans that were persecuted and either executed, imprisoned, or they and their families died in poverty for speaking out against their government. You can read their signatures on the "Declaration of Independance". The US is a country that was founded by rebels.
Immortal Fish - That *was* a very ingorant statement. Iran *did* have a politically elected leader who represented his peoples' best interest. The US was OK with him until he decided to take control of the oil wells out of the hands of the English and put it back into the hands of the Iranians. The CIA orchestrated a coup that overthrew the new prime minister and replaced him with the Shah (who was more than happy to put control of the oil into American hands). Hell the US and Britain are completely responsible for the quagmire that exists over there today, and your precious "DubYa" is only making things worse. -
What's the matter, not enough flash bang, boom, Michael Bay explosions in it for you? It's looks like a good movie, (you may disagree)and I'll probably rent it (sorry, but I have to spend my $10 selectively), and I know this is a geek site, but c'mon everyone out there, try to have a little culture. Don't try to claim er um I don't get it, what is it about. No one can be that ignorant.
-
"Beowulf must win 'cause it's got realistic dead-eyed homunculi, and it's got swords and dragons and appeals to the AICN demographic!" Never mind that this will be precisely 1,274 times more affecting and emotional, and that the b/w animation is actually rather beautiful. Pillocks.
-
Bonjour, ya cheese eatin' surrender monkeys. How's that?
-
AICN goes in with tickle.com to provied an IQ test so people must demonstrate having a normal to above normal intelligence to post here.
-
As an animated work, RATATOUILLE is visually stunning and also charms you with just about every scene. PERSEPOLIS, while thought-provoking and insightful, doesn't grab you as a viewer of art. It tells a solid story, but one that can be found in a simple TV movie aired on Bravo or A&E. There's nothing Oscar-worthy here.
-
the posters go? Ain't it Duhhhhhh? Okay, I exaggerate (sp?) somewhat. Seriously though, and I have said it before. If you want to disagree with someone that is fine, but show a little class, and enough intelligence to make your point without vulgarities, and without a temper tantrum.
-
but no way will this be best picture over ratatouille. and for all the people who keep calling things "gay", i can say as a gay man myself: takes one to know one. : P
-
funny how people will attack that which they don't understand. If this movie is going over your head, its ok, go back to drinking moonshine and having sex with your sisters. Because its obvious you are a bunch of rednecks who have no clue to what art is.
-
this whole conversation reminds me of the Itchy and Scratchy substitue on the Krusty show after they left for Gabbo. Wasn't it like worker mouse and proletariat or something like that. Krusty has this blank look on his face "what the hell was that?"
-
It'll most likely only receive a very select release in art house theaters, so the percentage of the populace that actually gets to see it will be about 1%. So it's perfect for the academy awards. 3 movies or actors you've heard of or may have seen being nominated and the one nomination you're scratching your head over going "who or what the fuck is this?" winning. The Academy Awards are bullshit. I used to look forward to them until I realized that they weren't for any film that most people have seen.

Your fathers raped you as a teen and you secretly loved it
by performingmonkey
because Daddy was finally giving you some attention instead of his whore of a wife. That's the only explanation for the sheer idiocy of some of you guys.
-
Showing dislike for a film that others hold in high artistic regard because you genuinely dislike what you've seen in the trailer, or claiming to be more intelligent than others and calling them stupid because you choose to like something which is considered high-minded and sophisticated? This is a rhetorical question.
-
on crack cocaine or doing meth! What a bunch of stupid crap...BORING! The animation was weak and horrible. It's like waiting for foot fungus to move across the shower floor! Harry, put down the hyperdermic and crack pipe! You need help.
-
... talking about the current state of entertainment consumers (large emphasis on gen Y.) Apparently, among the 14-24 set and to a lesser extent across the board American entertainment consumers are turning away from the demand for dark themes and dismal stories that enjoyed such success in the 90s and early 00s when Gen X ruled the world. Nowadays it's all about optimism and fantasy. Someone argued that Heroes was dark and had it explained that Heros is more about hope and hidden talent than anything else. Anyway, that's probably why there are so many comments like "this is teh gay" and "ouch my balls" and that sort of thing. Don't worry, I'm sure we'll swing back into the glory days of stuff like the crow and spawn soon enough.
-
I'd really like to screen it, but you can't tell me that it was a hell of a lot harder to make this than it was to make Beowulf. This looks fantastic, but Beowulf sets a new standard. THAT is what I think makes it a clear winner!
-
The animation in this film is unwatchable IMHO. The story may be fantastic, but I don't need any more South Park skills in my face. No thanks. Viva la Beowulf.
-
And it might even top Beowulf or Rattatouille as "artistic importance", "script quality", etc. But the Oscars are far too "hype" for something as far off mainstream as this.
I'll love it, probablt, though. -
and it's just brilliant. Great. Incredible. Awesome. (sorry, no talkback sarcasm here)
-
So very, very gay.
-
Quite possibly the dumbest thing said in this talkback, yet.
Oh, and Iran is Persian, not Arabic. You might as well confuse an Italian for a Frenchman. Read a book you fucking retard. -
Yep, it'll win the Oscar for SURE.
-
Persopolis and Persopolis 2 are fantastic reads and ought to be read by anyone wanting to know what it's like to live in Iran. Amazing books. Also, I'm under the impression this movie is being dubbed for English audiences.
-
when has the 'best film' ever gotten the academy award? and, while we're on the subject, do we REEEEALLY give two shits about what a bunch of paunchy middle-aged men with trophy wives and viagra habits think about film? i mean, in all fundamental truths, the oscars, just like all the other awards, are a fallacy, and yet somehow they STILL act as a barometer, mainly because sometimes - SOMETIMES - they get it right.
-
I hear you that this is something really innovative in how it uses new technology for storytelling (possibly even to the extent of Wizard of Oz or Star Wars...) but brother, is the Academy ready to give the Oscar to an adult film when RATATOUILLE is the most universally adored film of the year? You really think so?
-
I reacted to the headline, thinking you referred to Beowulf! How wrong was I? I liked Tripletts of Belleville, for it's look back at this kind of animation... but I'm surprised to see Sony releasing something like this!
-
even getting Academy voters to sit down and watch this would be a neat trick, I think. My money's on the rat.
-
What are the other forerunners in 2007, Astroboy and the original Popeye?!? People who are really into things are just insane.
RB -
I'm sorry, but even if you've only seen the trailer, you'd have to be blind to compare it to South Park. And the weird thing is, there WAS a South Park movie, and it was a hilarious movie. There's more to animation than anime and Pixar.
You guys really have to get past this idea of "technical achievement" equals "good". Are we going to start handing awards to all the George Lucas' and Zemeckis' of the world by default? The only reason their movies look the way they do is because they have boring imaginations and shitloads of money to make there animation "realistic".
-
I like Pixar too. But after talking to people that work there even Pixar is bored of Pixar. They don't want to become formulatic the way Disney became in the late 90's.
-
I repeat, are you watching the same trailer?
-
As with all films, what makes an animated film good or bad is not how flashy/"next-gen" it is or how much CGI or s/fx it uses. The ultimate determining factor is the quality of the story and the effectiveness of the presentation to convey that story. You may have little interest in the story, but that doesn't make it a bad story. And you may not like how it looks because it's not similar to what the mainstream have come to expect modern animated films should look like but that doesn't mean that it's not well made or that it's not effective. For this animated format, high contrast B&W, and "simple" non-distracting designs are probably better suited for telling the turbulent tale of Islamic revolution from the perspective of a little/young girl who is still learning about the world she lives in (not to mention that I'm sure it follows the artistic design and spirit of the original work). Had this been the story of a soldier struggling with the realities of every day life during a war, then color, rich details and a more life-like design (like maybe the styles used in Akira or Jin-Roh) might've been more appropriate to bring out the complexities and harshness of that perspective of reality. To assume that because the animation looks dated/"like crap" that it is therefore a bad film isn't giving the story teller any credit and if you consider yourself a film geek and you truly enjoy all genres of film, you're probably doing yourself a disservice by judging so quickly. Even within the short trailer, you can see that the directing and animation quality is actually quite high. Having said that, I do agree with most viewers that it probably won't win the Oscar. Not because it doesn't deserve it though. The Oscars have just lost a lot of credibility.
-
just didn't want you to think I was anti Pixar anyway. I'd also love to see them do something experimental and push the boundaries.
-
...with the exact same script and animation, about 75% percent of you would refuse to see it.
Sigh, sad state of affairs. -
This talkback has me thoroughly depressed. I'm at a loss. For those on the fence, just see it. You'll be glad you did, it's a great film, not just a great animated film. It's not pretentious, it's not 'art house crap', it's solid, oft-hilarious entertainment that damn near anybody can relate to. I certainly don't think of the damn thing as especially 'sophisticated' or 'intellecutal' or any of that garbage, it's just good. It's funny. It's moving. I fucking enjoyed it. For those who are so bent on lambasting something they haven't seen based on the trailer that even those of us who LOVED the film admit is not at all indicative of what you can expect from it, and who can't possibly understand why anyone would make a conscious artistic choice to produce animation this way...Don't see it. Seriously. Who cares. I don't. Think it's 'gay'. Think it 'sucks'. Think whatever. I don't assume you're idiots, I don't assume you're really assholes, and I don't assume I'm any more intellectual than your average stalk of broccoli. But I do have to bothered by the fact that people can apparently write-off what I find to be a fantatic achievement based on the perception that the animation is 'low quality'. It blows my mind, and it's thoroughly depressing. I'm done. I honestly can't read this anymore.
-
Quoted for fucking truth. yikes
-
...don't be fucking ridiculous, it's pretty obvious what its about. And even if you were having trouble following it, it flashes a great big "the biography of...". Definitely got a Belleville Rendez-vous feel, but I'll hold judgement until I see it, as both Ratatouille and Beowulf rocked. The trailer on the official site is better though (in the video section).
-
jabberwockey
-
I'll definitely see the film. If anything because of the controversy stirred up on this very web site. I don't need explosions are great animation. But the story line has been done, re-done, and over done.

The South Park movie is the funniest animated flick ever
by performingmonkey
And the series itself is the funniest animation ever period. Look at me using the word 'period' despite the fact that I'm British. Period period period fratboy, Taco Bell, cheese fries, ZIP code, drug store, soriority, Homecoming, ballpark, sneaker, sophomore, diaper, Jane Doe, freeway, fanny pack, mom-and-pop store, freshman, pantyhose, butthole, raincheck, candy!! Fuckerzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
-
Yeah, the animation is a bit on the simplistic/crude/stylistic side but I can see why the film makers wanted to go with continuity of the books. I'll be checking this one out. Oh yeah, ALL Iranians are evil and need to be wiped off the face of the planet (note sarcastic typing face). I see the usual idiots are here.
"What do you expect, Liberals adore dictators." That's possibly the most ignorant and ridiculously absolutist statement I've ever read at AICN. Yeah, I remember reading where FDR had Hitler and Mussolini over for tea on a regular basis. Let's see, wouldn't that make Churchill a Liberal too since he hung with Stalin AND FDR at Potsdam? Geeze, you idiots and your Stupid Ditto-head Talking Point mindset. Fucking bumper sticker cliche ridden sheep one and all. -
THAT trailer looked amazing..and I think its coming soon to DVD.
-
... Sure this country was founded in a revolution... but the British didn't wantonly murder thousands upon thousands of colonials like the mullahs have done for 30 years in Iran. You say the slightest thing against the religious government over there, you disappear in the night and no one even finds a body. It's like a Stalinist level of brutality that is very hard to fight.
-
Wow. Awesome. So, subtitled movies = bad.
You know, seriously, if the animation style doesn't do it for you, fine, go see Beowulf... AGAIN. AND, all things being equal, I agree with the prediction that Ratatouille will win best animated pic this year... but to say you're not going to see it because it's about an Iranian is the kind of dumb-ass bullshit that gets Americans a bad rep abroad, and deservedly so. -
...Gen Y DOES suck! And the little shits think they're just so precious and special. I say bring back the draft. 15 months in downtown Baghdad dodging IEDs do a lot to slap some sense into these irritating fuckers. Also, we need a new Kurt Cobaine to appear and blow all these faggy little guyliner-wearing emo bands off the fuckin' planet!
-
Your "precious" and "special" comment rings true. When Gen Y'ers were born, a "Baby on Board" sign immediately went up on their parents car window. When they were 10, a bumper sticker was added stating "My child is an honor student at Suburban Elementary." They are the most coddled generation.
-
Fuck. You guys are lackwits. A: This pic is supposed to take place in the time before the Ayatollah, and about a person who got sold the bill of goods that 'theocracy' was better than 'patrician monarchy' and less restrictive. The fish-headed majority decided that this line of crap was good, and voted for it...Just like you three (if you're of voting age) voted for a guy like Dub-yah who acts and sounds like you are, and thought that was a GOOD thing. And that stripping us of our civil liberties for the false sense of security that 'government protection' from the 'boogeyman (read: terrorist)' is a GOOD thing, you fucking cowards. I don't trust this fascism, because I read, and I understand that all it takes is a Night of Long Knives to fucking wipe out democracy, and a stunted ignorant pig-fucker like Bush to pull it off with the help of unwitting DUPES like yourselves thinking that it's GOOD to protect the Fatherland.Yeah Ahminijad is a fucking lunatic, but because you're an ignorant fool, you don't understand that he holds all the power of a town selectman over in Iraq, the Mullahs hold all the power. So, I won't call you stupid, but you three are ignorant as FUCK.'Real' people died in 9-11 when THEY attacked us? Because you don't quantify your pronouns, cro-mag, you make it sound as if Iran attacked us. When, in fact Iran threw in with us as we decimated the dirt-worshippers over in Afghanistan. All you religious morons burn my ass, because you guys are STILL fighting the 'Voltron' would beat 'Godzilla' fight that kids usually get over after adolescence. That said, I won't see this...the reason? I don't see 'Joy Luck Club' type ladies-fare. Even if they say it's based on a comic book or it's animated. Same reason I didn't go and see Ghost World, and won't go and see this damned flick. But I won't cite political differences between woman who seems to dig Western culture and seems better off when she abandons that religious nonsense...Kid Z..Face facts, Kurt Cobain was a fucking pussy. He couldn't hack the pain of living and offed himself. Fuck Kurt Cobain and his tummyache and his fear that his music became too commercial. Send Jerry Only out there with Danzig and Scott Ian to break off a piece on the emo kids. Or even sending Robert Smith and Morrissey to give them withering looks and explain how they're just re-treading the mod scene from the 80s and the goth-scene from the 90s, and are begging at the gates of creativity for a morsel of talent. Feh. At least it's not rap-rock.I won't see this.
-
The simple animation doesn't bother me at all. Artistically, you can do things with minimalist animation you can't do with more realistic art. And if it's jerky, with matte lines, etc... that's unfortunate, but it reinforces a point about animated films: They can be created by a small group with a minimal budget. That can allow for a far tighter, less watered-down execution. The fewer people involved, the less bland the result usually is.
If this movie was an apology for the terrible theocratic government of Iran, I wouldn't want to see it, nor would I if it was a polemic about how America was to blame for ruining the middle east. But this seems to be about freedom, a young girl's rebellious spirit. That's worth a viewing. -
It's coming out on DVD AND Blu-ray on Nov 27th.
-
I'm in my mid forties and can honestly say that both gen Y and gen X are equally coddled generations. The only difference is that X was hell bent on angst, isolationism, and reactionary attitudes to what they deemed (correctly) to be the hipocritical baby-boomers, whereas Y seems more positive and more willing to acknowledge the productive works of previous generations. Frankly, after 10 long years of unjustifiable anger, its a breath of fresh air.As for calling this generation emo, well, its nowhere near as bad as that insipid goth movement. Also, the kids nowadays do seem to be able to remember shampoo, bathing, and clothes that fit. Just one adult's opinion...
-
Yes, my son and I caught it in a theater that only had two other people in it. Sad. But the movie was awesome. I like Kon's "Millennium Actress" better, but everything he's done is terrific. I look forward to his stuff even more than Miyazaki's.
-
...Oh, sorry, Jett got me carried away.
-
Ignorance is it's own punishment, dudes - get some information in you before spouting. And can someone tell me HOW and WHY the Shah came to power? Any guesses who was behind that little turn of events?
-
i agree with CattVutt. i'm extremely depressed now. we deserve the future we're bound to get if we are going to let people like Jett and Viper be in charge, sigh.
-
Your reading comprehension seems to be in the toilet. I didn't see where micturatingbenjaming said that he sympathized with the terrorists or that he was happy about the people that died on 9/11.
There's a big difference between encouraging a certain amount of understanding about the Middle East and Muslim culture and defending terrorists.
We are talking about Iran, and someone said, "They attacked us on 9/11." Obviously, that person was lumping all Muslims together, which is a big mistake. That would be like judging all Christians negatively because Fred Phelps protests at military funerals.
Why is it those who are the most ignorant are the ones with the strongest opinions about world affairs. Perhaps it's because once you understand the complexity of the world you realize that there are not any easy answers. -
You win the thread. Everybody else can go home.
Jett, your posts are either excellent performance art/political commentary, or you are a weapons-grade jackass. Either way, I'm entertained. -
...Generation X (my generation by the way) was IGNORED... by our parents, school administrators, politicians, employers, bosses, advertisers, corporations, civic leaders, bureaucrats and on and on and on. Naturally, since we were so roundly detested by them, we feel no need to adhere to their standards and follow their rules. Gen Y is characterized by blind, unthinking obedience to the system... they'll learn a tough lesson one day, when they are roundly screwed without even realizing it. At least Gen X knew we were being screwed. And one more thing ya old fart... actually Generation Y knows about overpriced "hair care products", toxic "personal care products" pushed by the cosmetics industry and corporate logos affixed to clothing manufactured by third world slave labor and sold at criminal markups. And of course they lap them up in their usual unthinking, blindly obedient fashion.

didn't I just watch the trailer for "The Critic" the movie?
-
i think it was done by cartoon network, actually the old pink panther cartoon looks better than this gay thing. its also gay because it wants to be fancy and pretentious and everyone knows that gay people are 'sophisticated' type who live in lavish houses so they can fuck... ok i went to far any way movie is crap. story is pointless and blah. and ya beowolf sucks didn't watch but the concept of mo-capture the whole movie looks retarded. they dont look real nomatter how much they try because at the end it alll will depend on the voice acting not the actual animation--freaky eyes rolling at the wrong time, weird hand gestures, dull looks, pale, empty soulless figures portraying characters that are in need of far greater depth. i will never be moved by this kind of movie i like to see real actors they make it seem real and in the case of beowulf, they will make it epic. rather than cartoonish and showing off angelina's jolis body to get people into theatres seriously was that nudity part necessary. what does it accomplish but the fact that angelina looks freaky with that posture and face expression. thats my thoughts.
-
Surely on Fox, you're more likely to see "War...fuck yeah!" Anyway, this whole generation X and Y thing is pretty ridiculous. Huge generalisations on both sides. Many people have been coddled idiots since the dawn of time...how's that for a generalisation. Other than some sane and intelligent comments, for the most part this thread makes me a sad panda.
-
At one point, I'd thought that I was the first and foremost authority of the thoughts that run through my head. Looks like I have competition! Thanks for summing up EXACTLY where I was coming from when I neglected to invest the time in making myself clear -- even though, to someone of your intellect, the inherently obvious needn't have been made any clearer to an audience willing to read between the lines. Yours is one of several TB handles I'll be looking for moving forward.

Lenny Nero, yes, it isn't about Iranian politics, policy, or any
by immortal_fish
Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's about their people. Oh, their poor, oppressed people. Their people who have made their beds and are now forced to lie in them. Oh, boo-hoo!Isn't it a prime talking point -- from folks on both left and right of the spectrum -- about the Iraqi people not having *earned* democracy? Because they haven't fought for it themselves in the past and most haven't recently tried in the present? Why mustn't I peer at this alleged "art" about the Iranians through the very same prism?
-
I know this is about other stuff, but i'm really wanting producers to look at this as a sucess and make an Art Spiegelman's Maus animated film. T'would be swell!
-
scroll up, i said the same thing. (and i dont mean that in a 'i said it first' kind of way, but in a 'im glad someone feels the same' kind of way.)

As we've suffered under Clinton before him. As we've suffered under Bush before him. As we've suffered under Reagan before him. As we've suffered under Carter before him. As we'll likely suffer under Clinton again. And your point is...? Besides the one on top of your head...?"Those nutjob mullahs who control the government (Ahmaddinejad is just a useful puppet installed in an "election" that was about as fair and open as the old Soviet Era elections) have literally murdered uncounted tens and maybe hundreds of thousands of people."I'm a conservative. Instead, simply blame all Americans for THEIR government, because JOhn f'n KErry would have been SO MUCH better."they'd love to have the freedom to speak out, but can't... the price is too high."Please. The Tea Party spread their wrath over a 1% tax increase. And effectively made their point clear. If Iranian "terrorists" wanted to make their points clear to me, Joe American, they'd do a clandestine wipe-out pof American hatred in their grass roots propaganda, as I've written earlier here in TB."And one more thing... even after reading your bigoted ranting... they'd never tell you to "fuck off"!"True. The falling wall of brick and mortar would prevent their cries from reaching me. -- And *I* am bigoted...? HA! Again, please, get off my lawn.

I'd agree the animations style looks to work against it winning.
by johnno
I don't mind it and I'll probably like it because I can like big budget spectacles as well as minimalism. But I'd argue that even though they are trying to imitate the graphic novel art, there can still be ways to maintain that AND make it spectacular visually!. Even CG-ing some simplistic models and scenes and playing with the lighting and visual direction could make it look cooler! Take Tekkon Kinkreet for example. Seeing still of it and the art of the comic didn't convince me that the movie could look good, it just reminded me of those shitty MTV cartoons like Bevis and Butthead or Duckman. But boy after hearing good things about it and finally seeing it I was blown away by how cool it could be in motion! Michael Arias and Studio 4C nailed it! After all, anime has been adapting manga for years and maintaining the visuals from the comics and bringing it to an animated world, so they're pretty effing good at it, even those with low budgets! But anyway the only way to know how well this animation style works is to watch this myself and I'm all for it! It's too bad Satoshi Kon doesn't have anything in teh running, he should've rightfully won for Millenium Actress or Tokyo Godfathers... hell at least a nomination for the recognition would please me!

I don't like the style of the animation. I would probably wait until this came out on DVD.

The level of willful ignorance in here is astounding. I don't think I'd be too upset if some of you met a the business end of a dirty bomb up close, can't say you don't deserve it. Go ahead and ban me for this if you want, it's not worth my time having to read this xenophobic BS if I can't reply honestly. And honestly, fuck your whole single-branched family tree, you insufferable mouthbreathing turds, here's hoping you die in a grease fire and meet Mohammed at the pearly gates. That said, this movie looks more interesting than 90% of the theatrically released animation from this year. But I'll wait for DVD.

am I the only one who can't get this talkback's comments to load
by deus vult
seriously its brining up a blank white page. I won't even know if this comment posts! For the love of ________ (fill in your chosen pagan god harry) would someone on the aicn staff PLEASE dump hosting the site with steadfast networks and move to a reliable provider? Surely harry's got the money to pay for a good hosting service based on ad revenue...like the full sail film college people.in any case, harry's in austin, home of texas' IT hub, but yet we still can't get a page to load. ridiculous.

I would like to point out my post began with an exasperated 'Fuck.' and then I proceeded to call the three of you 'lackwits'. I didn't just say 'FUCK YOU'. I apologize to you, sir, because while I disagree with your politics, I do not find you lacking in intelligence. That said, I can't say as I 'suffered' under Reagan, my father was in the Army at the time, we lived REALLY well. However, our nation's reputation and moral high ground certainly suffered. Nobody suffered under Carter, so far as I know...nobody did much of anything under Carter, who turned out to be an innefectual dude because of his principled and less than hard-ass stance on global political enemies that we had. It's this rule that a friend of mine came up with; It's always at least 30% better than a Democrat says it is and it's at least 50% worse than a Republican will admit to. The world's a fucked up place, and I can see for a fact that you're a level headed guy, and while you're right about Kerry being a pussy and not the right guy for the job, as evinced by him watching a fucking dude get tazered for busting his balls and doing NOTHING to stop those truncheon wielding fucktards from electrocuting him. Bill Hicks had great points about both sides of our political system just being two different puppets being held by the same strings to the same puppet master.I will agree with you that Iran's people should, if they want to have a democracy, fucking get off their asses and start taking up arms against the oppressive mullahs and whoever else. The tree of democracy grows with the blood of tyrants...This flick is not about the 'poor oppressed Iranians' though, it looks like a woman who broke out of that fucking nonsense and saw that freedom is better. Movies that pretty much say 'Birds Fly, Water's Wet, and the Sky Is Blue' aren't stunning groundbreaking masterpieces. You want something that would FLOOR the fucking Academy? MAUS done in this same style. Fuck, it's got World War II, nazis, AND the Holocaust. If you threw in a mentally challenged homosexual cowboy and had Pixar animate it, OSCAR CITY, USA. Yeah, I like more lowbrau fare, so sue me.Fish, let's talk turkey here, man. Bombing Iran is fucking stupid. Bombing Iraq is still fucking stupid. Leaving Pakistan alone is REALLY FUCKING STUPID. And...Bombing Saudi Arabia is my fucking wet dream...or sending some help to my cousins over in Afghanistan to reclaim the country. Our Commander In Chimp is really FUCKING our service people...I was at work the other day, and a lady was looking at a series of pics of the President standing with this guy who was wounded in the line of duty by having his face melted clean off. Bush just grin/leered into the camera. The lady goes, 'Wow, it's amazing, he doesn't cry when he's around those men and women.' you know, complimenting the fucking psycho's 'strength' or something.I simply told her he doesn't look broken up because he simply doesn't give half a shit for anyone in the Armed Forces. He doesn't give a fuck for anyone except his paymasters at OPEC and all the other wonderful corps in the Military Industrial Complex.Anyway, this movie looks like it's gonna be a chick flick and I ain't seeing it. There's literally, NO...NO CHANCE...of seeing bush or tits in this one. And if you want a Conservative in the White House? Vote for the MAN: Joe Biden. That fucker's INTENSE!

Wow. You made me happy. The Talkbacks have only ever brought pain. I love that movie. And yes, Nirvana helped to kill Hair Metal, but if you were up on yer music knowledge...Primus, the Pixies, Minor Threat, The Dead Milkmen, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Beck, hell, lots and lots of bands HELPED kill off Hair Metal...Shit, even Guns and Roses had a fucking place in that list because though Axl had that hair, when they did You Could Be Mine, Motley Crue fucking choked and did that Don't Go Away Mad shit, and Metallica and Bob Rock (The Antichrist) slaughtered the last vestiges with their truly soulless and sold out BLACK album.

Hey, you guys who think this thing deserves my money, sell my friends on this flick. Tell my buddies why they should spend their money on this movie without using the words 'poignant' or 'one woman's tail...er tale.'

Now, going by the book (Generation X, obviously) Gen X would be those in their late 20's in roughly 1989. Gen Y (or the Global Teens as Coupland calls them) are those in their late 20's in the roughly 1995. However, Gen X is more of a mindset than a precise chronological stamp. For example, I'm now 29, and have worked on and off in a variety of veal-fattening pens. Last year I threw it in and went back to being a student. Now I'm working a 0 responsibility job. So therefore, by Coupland's criteria I'm Gen X. However, I don't worry about the bomb, am fairly capitalist and selfish. So therefore am Gen Y. What I really am is Generation apathy (thank you BBC) as I don't particularly give a fuck about anything of value (and yet care lots about trivial things such as Genre movies). The whole labelling thing is a load of bollocks anywho.

Or as I call them, baby-boomers part two.

aye, very good. That cat-nip description is more fitting for the horrid EMO teens that seem to be all over the place at the moment.
-
I really don't care for the art style of this at all.
-
My ultimate point was that both gens y and x seem to be about the same, save for y being a bit more realistic. Not much, because, after all, they're still kids. I was merely pointing out gen'x's penchant for its negative outlook on all other generations but themselves. You and I both know that emo=goth. In other words, its the same damned thing. Subcultures aside, Y and X are only slightly, SLIGHTLY different. As a teacher, I can tell you that the main difference between Y and X is its willingness to be a bit more accepting when it comes to past generational contributions, such as music, fashion, and even philosophies.

... Spoken like a true "Apple"... now go back to your job standing stock still in the man's lawn and holding a bunch of cigars. Geez, whatta douchebag...
-
...I agree... the Pixies ARE God!
-
...Yeah, but Gen Y is all blissed out on meds. Heavens forbid if precious li'l Ryan or Jessica were (gasp) moody... or (horrors!) shy... or (catastrophe!) creative! Better to load them full of pharmaceuticals and zombify them into being willing slaves, eager to suck up the rote crap downloaded into them in government-sanctioned learning facilities.

I just want to kill less people.

Err, i got a B/W boring Cartoon, so i assume, that the headline is to be taken as sarcasm.
Overall appearance of this movie looks boring and "of course" colorless.
In a time, where nearly everyone has a DVD-Player, and most of us useres here a PC/Laptop/Mac, drawing a movie without colors is just too cheap.
I couldn't imagine people watching this on a FullHD-Display.
Well, to put it simple: this thing looks more like a flash-Movie than an Cartoon, and to top it, it looks BORING!
My final word: TECHNICOLOR! -
70% of the people posting here are 12 years old. It appears most of you have no clue what this movie is about and have minds far too small to accept anything other that commercial Hollywood junk. I bet you still have to have your food cut for you so you can swallow it without choking.

In this movie. What also comes out is the ignorance and apathy of the brain dead zombies kids who have now become the brownshirts of the stalinist anti-war left in this country. You want America to lose and terrorists and islamic radicals to win? Watch this movie and find out what would happen to the women in this country and freedom as we know it. As much as I pound AICN for supporting the stalinist anti-war left in this country, I equally celebrate AICN for showcasing this film.
-
trying to turn this into a drum for war?
You missed the point. I'm opposed to the war but that has nothing to do with this film. Iran chose it's destiny, much the same way Germany chose it's destiny in the 1930s. The film is about what is a percieved reality and what is actual reality, not a case against Islam and a justification for our presence in the Middle East.
