Call an exorcist! David Goyer's possessed!

Published at:  Nov 09, 2007 3:15:27 AM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. David Goyer has a possession flick up his sleeve, as yet untitled. It's about an 18 year old girl who realizes she is slowly being possessed and tries to fight back. Platinum Dunes is producing for Rogue Pictures. Thank God it's not a remake (as the other proposed Platinum Dunes films are, ie THE BIRDS and NEAR DARK).

They're hoping for a pre-actors/directors strike start date of February '08.

Thoughts?

So, not researching the source material then...

    by spud mcspud

If you're going to do a movie about demonic possession, at least read some of the literature first. You don't get "slowly" possessed - there are external occurrences that alert you to the possibility, but internally it's not something you'd be able to "realise, and start fighting back" against. There are some damn good books out there (aim for the anthropological studies; avoid the Christian agenda type books) that go into detail about these things: maybe Goyer should read a few before writing this movie.

Then again, seeing the hatchet job he made of BLADE: TRINITY...

I have no hope for this shit. First, because it's Platinum Dunes; second, because the writer doesn't seem to understand the subject. "Slowly possessed"? Crock of infernal shite.

    I agree about Blade Trinity

    by matdgz

being a big pile of stupid shit (wasn't it his first directorial film), but Batman Begins' script wasn't bad. He can be an OK writer (again, except for Blade Trinity) but as a director, I aint sure. Ah fuck it what do I care? The Lovely Bones has started shooting!

    by iammrmonkey!

It may have worked in its original form (I can't comment as i haven't seen it) but the remake left me cold. And don't get me started on the rewritten ending where the girl suddenly develops mysterious powers of healing or whatever. Jesus.

    by knuckleduster

This is great news, folks. The word hack is thrown around too often in these talkbacks, but in Goyer's case I think that title is actually quite justified. The further away he stays from good material, the better.

    The directors are striking too?

    by bobo_vision

Well, I guess it doesn't matter, because if the actors strike, directors have no work...so they might as well strike. I'm sure that was their logic as well.

    F-1000 - Some recommended reading

    by spud mcspud

Possessed: The True Story of an Exorcism by Thomas B. Allen - This book recounts in great detail the haunting of a young man back in the 1940s that was the template for the events in THE EXORCIST by William Peter Blatty. Supposedly based on a diary kept by the priest who presided over the exorcism - but then, they always say that...PS Steer clear of the movie starring Timothy Dalton - it's capably made, but not remotely scary. Could be much better.

Hostage to the Devil: The Possession and Exorcism of Five Americans by Malachi Martin - This went very in-depth and tried to look at the subject from a more psychological perspective, and has an admirably even-handed look at the subject.

People of the Lie - M Scott Peck - Yes, it's the guy who wrote THE ROAD LESS TRAVELLED, and yes it has a bit of a Christian agenda, but it's still good reading.

THE EXORCIST by William Peter Blatty - Obvious really, but reads like a textbook example of exorcism. Written as a "love letter to the Jesuits" who schooled him, this is more a work of faith being tested than an epic shit-you-up tale of head-spinning and crucifix fucking. Very scary, very thought-provoking.

Hope this keeps you going - I've forgotten some of the better books I read (I kind of read everything I could get my hands on from this subject back in the late 1980s - early 1990s) but these were all good. In the name of all that does not suck, avoid ANYTHING that smacks of contemporary charismatic evangelism - especialy that fucking lunatic Rev Bob Larson. Most, if not all, of these big-time TV evangelists don't have a clue how to discern real mental issues and genuine emotional catharsis from the real deal of demonic possession, which is why these rich Godless fuckers are so dangerous in the US today - they are dumbasses with a large following of people who also don't think for themselves but blindly believe anything these guys say. People like Rev bob Larson could be as harmful as the demons they seek to expel. Watch the movie JESUS CAMP to see what I mean - scared the shit out of me!!!

ooh, forgot the Great Work of exorcism...

    by spud mcspud

... The MALLEUS MALEFICARUM, which I believe was written as a kind of handbook for witchfinders back in the dark old days of the Spanish Inquisition. As well as having all the signs that withcfinders would look for as signs of possession in it, it details all the test that would be performed, and the methods of torture and/or murder that would be wrought upon the hapless inflicted until they were either cured or (more likely) died. It's absolutely terrifying reading, as a manual of what people will do to each other in the name of religion.

... but it seems like he's really floundering as he tries to move away from writing comic book action movies and into directing suspense/horror. Blade 3 was an abortion and I laughed every single time I saw the white-eyed old man hamming it up in the Invisible trailer.

Actually, BADLY shot. It is inept in just about every way. It's a hit with teen girls, though. UGH. Unrelated - hated "The Mist" last night. Curious to see the reaction of others. I hope it's not a repeat of the undeserved fawning that was witnessed after the screening. I spoke to two who also attended, and they were incredibly disappointed.

Goyar deserves no praise for Batman Begins.

    by knuckleduster

Anything good in that script was due to Nolan. Goyer merely supplied the "blockbuster" elements (meaning most of the crappy bits). The guy's lucky to have worked with good directors like Nolan and Del Toro who make his mediocre writing look good.

    Disliked that one, as well

    by mister man

However, at least it looked good, and was well-acted. I know how "Mist" was shot - cheaply, and in Louisiana - but I didn't expect it to ruin the visuals, as it indeed does. In addition, the acting is forced - and characters often miscast. Wait, let me go back to cinematography...during the shot of the father entering the grocery store, the digital camera noticeably readjusts for exposure - it is sloppy, not "immediate" or "natural." The color is washed out. The exterior shots are ugly - Shreveport does not look like Maine. That opening scene was just a downright lousy location selection. Blah, blah.

A really good link on the inspiration for The Exorcist

    by cyberskunk

    http://tinyurl.com/780b

That link leads to strangemag.com and to sum up, the writer does a lot of investigation to the extent that he drives to where the afflicted family was supposed to have lived, interviews people, finds nothing supernatural but does find mundane explanations. It is thorough.

I hope he gives another exorcist movie a go. There is a scene in "Bug" where he zooms in on a grocery cart that totally reminded me of shots that put chills down my spine from Exorcist 1 & 3. Hopefully we will see another from him before he retires.

    by sepulchrave

Basically, the VERY REAL and COMMON belief in demonic intervention prevents people from developing morally in any way. If this is a horror film; fine. But the belief in demons is now so common and so infantile that people should be careful about exploiting it.

Cheers for the link to the article, damn interesting read! The guy's done easily the most investigative work into the case, and while I disagree it's as cut and dried as "he was a disturbed teen who wanted too much attention", it's the most measured and non-sensationalist writing on the subject as I've ever read. Very interesting stuff.

Still pretty sure that this is going to suck - and, judging by the rest of this talkback, so does everyone else. Goyer, come on in, your time is up - unless, of course, DARK KNIGHT turns out to be ace. Which it probably won't, at least if it has the same Act III problems that the other one did.

    SK229 - Too true

    by spud mcspud

The rational response to anything that defies our belief in science and the laws of physics etc is to try to rationalise it anyway, even to the extent that although it's plain that something weird and scary is happening, we lie to ourselves rather than face it.

The fact is that many cases of supposed possession ARE to do with mental illness, disturbed people and/or attention seeking. But then how do you explain speaking fluently in languages that the person doesn't understand... or, in some cases, is a completely dead language from thousands of years ago? Then you get into the thorny issues of authenticating stories like the ones I'm referring to... it's all a bit murky.

But then, nowadays, you have people who are injured, awaken and can speak a previously unknown language (a guy from Norway I think, wakes up after an accident speaking English fluently - then loses the ability as the injury heals!) or people who awaken with entirely new accents - the Newcastle woman in the UK who awakens after a stroke to find her accent is unmistakeably Jamaican. Google both of these stories - they're out there somewhere.

The human mind is way, way weirder than ANY of us can ever know...
