Has STAR TREK Found Its Janice Rand??
I am – Hercules!!

Whitney

Nichols
Will Rachel Nichols, the towering 27-year-old former model who played the neo-Sydney in the final season of J.J. Abrams’ “Alias,” assay Janice Rand in Abrams’ new “Star Trek” movie?
From Wednesday’s Toronto Sun:
And next Christmas Nichols will board the starship Enterprise in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot, which chronicles the early adventures of a young Capt. Kirk and Mr. Spock. News broke last week that Nichols was joining the cast of the uber-secretive project.
"I'm very restricted on what I'm allowed to say," she says. "But yes, there's a good chance you'll see my shining face in the new Star Trek ... My mom even e-mailed me about it because she saw it (online) and I hadn't told her yet. There's a lot of buzz about it, but honestly, I don't even know the name of my character."
A trivial bit of casting rumor, perhaps, but fans shouldn’t forget that in the earliest episodes of “Star Trek,” Rand (played by dreamy Grace Lee Whitney) was the series’ lead female character; in the first half of season one she probably got more lines than than Scotty, Sulu and Uhura combined!

I mean, she's an all right actress, which is about all that's required from Rand, but it does nothing to excite me. And wouldn't Rand be about 13 in this movie anyway?
Also---as I was skimming all I saw was "Nichols" and had a really bad flashback to Trek V. *shudder* no more feathers, grandma, no more! -
I always thought she was much younger than Kirk. She is a yeoman and hasn't made up the ranks. So, if this is about the early years of Kirk and Spock in their twenties then Rand must be what? 15 years old? Or do I have all the ages wrong?
-
I made this prediction in the other Trek Talkback.
-
it is trivial, unless you're a trekker's trekkie, which I am not. I've seen all ToS episodes at least once, and I don't recall that character. I don't imagine many 'regular' people would, either, with 'regular' meaning 'non-trekkies.' The bigger news would be, who plays my sweet chocolate nubian princess, Uhura.
-
if the new Kirk wasn't GAY :)
-
Anybody who was anybody and everybody will all be together in classes at the academy or on the first missions. Starfleet probably hundreds of ships, but these 1o people are always stuck together. I hate that. Next, all the aliens will speak English fluently. The only way we will be able to tell them apart is where the alien bumps on their head will be.
-
So I guess that explains her casting in P2. "You wanna be in a movie?" "Yeah sure."
-
That Janice Rand will be played by Rachel Nichols, when someone named Nichelle Nichols played Uhura, and someone named Christopher Pine is playing Kirk, successor to Christopher Pike. And now I hereby invite you to not be able to get the theme song to "Team America--fuck yeah!" out of your heads.
-
Isn't it a bit outdated to have a Captain's Yeoman as part of the crew? I know their official role is to serve meals and iron shirts but it's obviously they're there to provide EVERY need of the Captain a la Monica Lewinsky.
-
Then she's perfectly cast as BAIT.
-
Zoe Saldana.

Herc, are you still making a call that Shatner will be in the mo
by bono luthor
It seems most people are thinking the other way now. Which I think sucks.
-
They're gonna be using those old timey uniforms right?
-
Spock has to go back and change history so that the original crew all come together sooner than in the series. That could be one way in which the timeline changes...
And if any changes are made to the timeline, then Kirk could still be alive in Spocks future. -
Hey, it worked for Beowulf didn't it?
-
she is going to be Rand and not another character? Like Carol Marcus for instance? Trust me I'd love it if she were Rand but it seems like you are just guessing unless you have other info.
-
imdb says she's 5ft10. That's towering?
-
Bah. Now who's going to be playing Lt Leslie?
-
Ahem.
-
None of this makes a goddamned bit of sense.
1. Kirk was in his mid thirties..young for a captain but possible if your simply a bad ass.
2. Spock was Much older than anyone else..did not go to Star Fleet Academy with Kirk..remember MUCH older.
3. McCoy was in his 40s..logical if your a ships chief medical officer..they don't put newbies in that position today nor will then in the 23 century.
4. Checkov, rand, Sulu and Ohura were all in grade/high school when Kirk was at Starfleet.
This new Trek sound like nothing but an Emo/O.C./ Gen Y pandering reboot. In what illogical world would anyone put a Starship on a scientific mission in the hands of a bunch of newbies? What could possibly be their mission given their age/experience? Save Jimmy Eats World from a group of Klingons from Silver Lake? -
I think it's more likely she's Carol Marcus - no mater how many episodes Janice Rand was in, she didn't have nearly the same impact on canon that Carol did when her character appeared in Trek II. Kirk's departure on his 5-year mission played a major role in his relationship with Carol - and son David.
-
... But please... no beehive hairdos!
-
Somebody PLEASE see sense!! Stop making this movie now!!! It WILL be a mess and be hated by everyone!! There is no chance on Earth or beyond that this movie will be any good!!
-
Padding, gentlemen, padding. A time-honored technique in Trek!
-
and i'm pissed at this film. How must the hardcore be feeling?

...Aside from an occasional casting choice, I've heard nothing worthwhile. My excitement would pick up some when we see some actuals stills of the cast in (hopefully) TOS-like costumes. I would get even more primed if we see and TOS-like Enterprise bridge. Though, I would wait for DVD if the costumes and Enterprise interior resemble that Bakula abortion with everything dabbed in bluish light...ugh!Keep it bright and keep it light. That was one of the secrets of ST:TOS. Bold colors, straight forward characters, and fun stories. Even when dealing with politically charged issues they kept everything from getting too bogged down in serious drama. 'Let That Be Your Last Battlefield' was a terrific episode dealing with racial hatred that never went into todays over-dramatic deep end. I'm afraid that Abram's may dip too deep into the bad, trying too hard (I said it!) ALIAS/LOST drama he's known for. Then again, he's never overly impressed me. Alias lost me first season and Lost is only half (island) good. And before the flaming begins, here's a few other J.J. products that left me dry... MI:III, WHAT ABOUT BRIAN, TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS (Yes...the one with James Belushi!), GONE FISHIN' (Pesci, Glover...crap in a hat.), and let's not forget...perhaps his most grievous of charges...Michael Bay's ARMAGEDDON!!!Seriously people...the guy that wrote the script for Armageddon is writing and directing the Star Trek relaunch!!!And people wonder why I'm so hesitant about this movie...

I NEEDS ME SOME GREEN BITCHES!!!!

or whatever his name is.

JarJar Abrams' usual suspects.
Shatner's participation will be announced in time for pre-release hype.
As if that can help Star Trek Abomination. -
jeanluc Dickhard should be Jean-Luc Prickhard---funnier, and more consistency.
whew.
that being said, must JJ cast EVERY FRIGGIN ROLE THAT EVER EXISTED IN Star Trek?
Let's see, we have, nonsenically, yeoman rand. Next up: Q, Trelane, Charlie X, Khan, Dr. Soong, Admiral Cartwright, Lt. Ilia, V-Ger, Christopher Pike, George Kirk and whatever else.
This shouldn't be a kitchen sink movie. If JJ was wise, he'd be filming this movie like he films his series--as a series.
Do a LOTR-type deal. I hope there' s at least some type of conceivably story arc going on here. -
Shatner, Whitney, Nimoy and Nichols are all within a year of each other. Kelly and Doohan are 10 years older, Takei and Koening are 6-7 years younger.
But this movie will still suck. -
at least the movie will cost $5.50 from Wal-Mart shortly after the DVD release.
It's hard to be excited when JJ's rewriting EVERYTHING. The problem is that Trek is not Battlestar Galactica, so a complete "reimagining" as Star Trek Babies just can't work in the face of 40 years of history.
On the other hand, the cop out of having this be another "time fuck up" seriously undermines any sense of urgency or commitment to these characters.
I personally would love to see an academy-era film take place, but look at what happens when Lucas put Darth Vader in a diaper.
More of the same.
Can hardly wait to see the reworked federation insignia. -

They reported this last week.
-
What's up with all the name coincidences in the casting of this movie...
-
No, let me be serious... I can't wait to finally get a chance to see star trek on screen for the first time in my life. I love the show, it's good cheesy fun, with some great intelligent questions about the human condition throughout. It's "fascinating" to sit and ponder the many questions we're meant to ask while SEEING SEXY MINISKIRTS SLOWLY RISE UP TO REVEAL PANTIES.
-
... by miscasting Pike so the rest can go and die like a 7-week-old fart in my pants. Another great opportunity for a remake wasted. Thankyou, Shoddywood.
-
Besides, I could tell you that Rosebud is a sled, and AICN would still be two weeks late with that news. Trolling the web for rumors and cutting and pasting is not reporting. It's a blog. Zzzzzzzzzzz.

Over in the Pike TB I nominated Kristin Vangsness (Penelope Garcia on Criminal Minds) as Rand because the role calls for someone curvy and sexy. Someone else there came up with a better idea, though. Mary Lynn Rajskub, the comic/actress who played Chloe on "Veronica's Closet" has the same pinched mouth and "please don't sexually objectify me" vulnerable pout that Whitney brought to the role. Rajskub for Rand - she looks the part.Although since the film is being made in the post feminist era and not in the swinging sicties, I can see the logic in casting someone with no sex appeal in order to downplay the "captain's woman" angle of the role.Next dreamcasting challenge: Majel Roddenberry played the voice of the starfleet computers on every Star Trek series and in every movie (yes, including the Enterrise series finale). If this is a total relaunch, breaking with all established continuity and past casting, who will they get with that authoritarian but reasonable, school-marmish matter of fact deadpan delivery? Personally, I think it sould be a mistake to not use Mrs. Roddenberry for this, but she is up in age so if they expect this to be a franchise relaunch they might want to find a new voice now for the sake of consistency.
-
For some reason all women today have to look like a two by four with arms and legs (there are a couple of exceptions). Who finds this attractive?
-
Didn't she play a FBI agent with Peter Coyote on a very Whedenesque show? Daniel Baldwin was in it I think. I remember liking it
-
who look like boys
BECAUSE THEY LIKE BOYS -
Janice Rand had some CURVES and meat on her bones, like a real woman. This coat-rack needs to put on a few pounds so I can tell the difference between her and any 16-year-old boys that might wander onto the set.
Seriously Hollywood-- WOMEN HAVE CURVES! Stop taking the gay mens' opinion on what women are supposed to look like. The fashion designers and makeup artists are NOT the authority on beauty. -
Not this tomboy beanpole, I hope.
-
This casting is ridiculously boring, stupid and embarrassing.
-
What the fuck was that movie about?
-
Dumb tabs
-
Now this I gotta see! Screw you, Fred Claus and Lions For Lambs.
-
Has he been cast yet?
-
I'm not as geeky as I first thought. Hurrah!
-
Seriously... does anyone CARE who plays the utterly useless Janice Rand? All she ever did was bring Kirk coffee once every 20 episodes and flash him her legs and lower buttcheeks. If they don't put Nichols in a sexy red minidress and fishnets for this role, there's no point wasting time putting the character in the movie at all!
-
for hiring actors whom he's worked with before and obviously likes working with?
-
For TWO reasons - her various Maxim spreads, which are UNBELIEVABLY hot, AND her tongue-wrestling with Mimi Rogers in "Dumb and Dumberer" was the absolute ONLY redeeming part of that movie.
-
with her tribble....
-
You brainy mathematics-majoring Columbia grad but nevertheless empty-headed-looking big-breasted superhot Playboy type you.
-
That picture does her absolutely no justice, depending on what JJ is going for if he want's her to look hot, she will indeed cause nearby males to have to report to sickbay with 3rd degree burns.
-
Too bad she indulged in the drug culture a little too heavily and got booted of the set.
Although to be honest in this PC world Yeoman Rand cannot exist. She'll just end up being a bitchy female officer and not a love interest. There's no way they'd allow a 60's era male / female relationship. -

P2 - she's good, movie sucks, she has a fucking fantastic rack
by tallboy66
Seriously, she's in a wet dress for half the movie. In a parking lot!
-
Now bring on some Yvonne Craig green girl.
And get rid of that "Mist" ad. -
She will be the Green girl.
