There's something in the mist!!! It's an Internet-only Trailer!!!

Published at:  Nov 06, 2007 11:17:35 AM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Looks like the good folks at IGN got their hands on the internet trailer for Frank Darabont's Stephen King's THE MIST. Some enterprising soul posted it to youtube, so you can check that out below or click on the IGN link above to download the better Quicktime version.

You get more Mrs. Carmody and a bit more of the interaction within the store. I'm pretty psyched. Can't wait for the big screening on Thursday!!!

I'm a 32 year old male who loves America, Jesus, Star Wars and apple pie. I, nor any of the people I know , saw the first thing wrong with any Mist trailer that's been released up to this point. Okay, I wouldn't have given away Andre Braugher's death...but the CGI was absolutely passable at that early stage, and I think pretty good. I speak for Ain't It Cool News, America, and the freedom-loving people of Earth when I say, shut the hell up about the CGI in the trailer for a movie that comes out in two weeks. Absolutely no one wants to hear it anymore, you basement-dwelling Eeyore. Oh, and speaking of basements, your mom says to get up here already. Dinner's getting cold.

Frank Darabont makes a horror film?!

    by www.revyou.tv

The greatest thing about Darabont as a director is his ability to grandeur. Look at SHAWSHANK or GREEN MILE - those were beautiful rich tapestries. So why would he cheapen his style for THE MIST? I know he probably had a small budget, but why not bring something to the genre instead of brainlessly aping it? Take a risk, Frank! And casting Thomas Jane as your lead doesn't count, because that's a foolish risk... Seriously, nobody wants to see that guy.

    by 7pointedstar

It doesn't matter how it looks. You'll love this movie until you actually see it, then you'll wonder "how it all went wrong." Just like every other fanboy-anticipated movie this year.Just so you know, I don't know the story, nor do I really care. I don't want to see this movie at all. But I just figured that by the "trailer" stage in the film's development, you think they'd want to show something a little more polished than what was there. The domestic trailer was very "Sci-Fi Channel Original Picture" to me. This one looks better, mostly because they left all the shitty-looking tentacles out of it and stuck with bugs and fog.Gotta love Stephen King. There's never been a more anti-climactic writer. It's not an evil clown...it's an alien spider from another dimension! Grr!

Darabont simply couldn't make the kind of movie he's made in the past with THE MIST because he didn't have the money. He wanted to make it just like the rest of his films, but the studio wasn't willing to give him the money he wanted because of the ending of his script. They asked him to change the ending and he said "no". Thus he was given far less then he wanted, but still shot 'his' ending. It is a VERY DARK ending.

    It's not about the effects

    by mattmanreturns

There are plenty of bad movies with great effects, and plenty of great movies with bad effects. The Mist is about the way the characters react under pressure, effects come secondary. The best example I can think of right now is Pitch Black vs. Chronicles of Riddick. Riddick is far superior in effects, and Pitch Black is a smaller character piece with some very low budget effects. I'm pretty sure most talkbackers agree that Pitch Black is the superior movie, in spite of its effects.

I just want to make it clear that I have no knowledge of the story, don't want to see the movie, and the only things on which I can base my opinion of the project are the few clips shown in a trailer that was cut by a studio more interested in cutting a kewl preview than representing the director's artistic vision.

All that being said, I can unequivically state that the movie be horrible. My arrogance trumps all!

...actually, they don't all die. And I hope they don't take the movie past the end of the story. That creepy open ending is the thing that made me love the story so much way back when.

And for the record, "The Mist" ties for my favorite King short story (or 'novella', if you must) with "The Long Walk", which also freaked me the hell out, but in a totally different sort of way.

Thats from the unfortunate 'extra ending' crap they added to the finale...sad, as the novellas ending was pitch PERFECT, but Darabont figured audiences 'wouldn't get it' if he kept it in tact...so he added this GODAWFUL additional, downer crap at the films conclusion...thank GOD for editing software when this is released to DVD...;)

    Darabont

    by darwyn

Frankly (you can consider that a pun), the movie looks just fine if you don't compare it to every other Darabont picture and their respective amounts of cash. Because in the context of other horror movies, it will be a lot more entertaining than most of the crap out there. At least with Stephen King it will be as original as you can get these days, and if actually believe the writer might be able to throw something new at you, you actually think there might be something unknown in this movie to fear, unlike movies pasted from every horror cliche out there. Moreover, the characters will be real people and not people who act just as fantastically as the events that are happening to them, allowing you to really connect their fear with yours. Sure, it will still be anti-climactic, because any time the metaphysical, malevolent force comes to a show-down with the physical protaganist, they must interact, putting them on the same plane of existance and negating the metaphysical nature and properties of the evil, which destroys the fear of the unknown the movie was built on. (Incidentally, that also works as a little proof against the concept of metaphysics in general, not to ruffle any feathers.) But then, if we temper our expectations by understanding that we're really there to enjoy the build up, we can enjoy it for what it is, and my guess is that Frank Darabont has nailed this build up. In fact, sight unseen, I would submit that Frank should be given more money and be solely in charge of adapting King's work for the rest of his career, although I am damn curious to know what such a talent could do to an original piece of work, considering he hasn't done anything that wasn't scripted by Stephen King yet.

Yep. It sure does. And at least I won't be paying to see this shit when it hits theaters. I'll just be logging back on here to see how many "I can't believe how much that sucked" comments there are. From what I understand about film marketing, trailers are cut and released to generate interest and showcase what the movie has to offer to the movie-going public. I've viewed everything they've offered...and I don't get the appeal. It's a cloud. With tentacles. And hybrid bugs. And giant spiders. Scary. However, perhaps something else is to blame for how much I don't want to see this movie. Perhaps I've been turned off by the hype machine that constantly churns out links and stories when Darabont takes a shit or Thomas Jane hiccups. In short, my opinion as someone who doesn't want to see this movie matters just as much as the opinion of someone who does. And the fact that I think it will be terrible based on what I've seen is the same as a fanboy thinking it will be incredibly super holy shit awesome based on what they've seen. We've all seen the same shit. I'm just not impressed with it.

For those that 'dont get it'

    by jaffab

IF you say you dont get it, its becuase you have missed the concept. The story is not really about bugs, and monsters and such - its about the people in the market.

they are trapped between people who are loosing it around them ('the good book demands blood') and the unknown outside (hence the miss - you dont see much of what the unknown is.

Thats why this is my tied (with the long walk) favorite King story. Its not about the things that go bump in the night, its the reaction to them.

As long as the suspense is there, and the shots of monsters they do show does not let it down, it could be a good film.
