Update from the set of MISSION IMPOSSIBLE II! Spoilerish!

Published at:  Apr 19, 1999 11:35:53 PM CDT

Here's what happened yesterday on the set of MISSION IMPOSSIBLE II... there is spoilerish stuff contained, so beware!

Hello Harry, Long time reader first time writer (to you).

I live in Sydney home of the wonderful Matrix, Tom + Nicole and soon
to be the temp home of Mr Lucas. Well Fox studios has certainly
recieved the movies lately, my interest is , however, Mission
Impossible 2.

I have a source who is a (deleted to protect source) and I was told the
following :

Filming occurred on an Jumbo Jet (set at Fox studios Sydney)
specifically on 1st and business class.

My contact was on the plane and saw a lot but didn’t hear
anything, dialogue etc.

Tom is in 1st class sitting next to a professor type guy.

The oxygen masks drop but poison is on tap not the usual air mix.

Tom then shots the professor type guy,

But get this, pulls his mask off and is someone else !

Oh and all the newspapers and magazines the extras had on the flight
were dated October 13th 2000.

Cool huh ? Well I have no idea why any of that happened, when it was
in the movie or who the other actors were. Damn my source gets the
placement but doesn’t have my or any of this site’s readership’s love
of detail.

Later - krudler

    "It's Somebody Else!"

    by henrik

This reminds me of the coolest moment from MI1. I loved the bit at the end, so hokey on 60's TV where one actor rips off the rubber mask and they cut away for a reaction and cut back and "Hey, it's somebody else!" In MI1, thanks to heightened technology, it's all done in one shot, no cut-away. I watched that bit over and over.

    wait, WHO was someone else

    by ck

okay, I'm a tad confused, who was wearing the mask, Tom or the
(bad) guy he shot... I guess it was the (bad) guy, but not certain....

(oh yeah, woohoo! I'm second! :-)

    Why people hate Mission Impossible

    by zcarstheme

I've got a few theories. It's probably because it came across as a tangled up, emotionless, overlong, missed-opportunity mess which had its few jaw-dropping moments given away in the trailer. I'm still looking forward to the Woo-charged MI2, don't get me wrong, but the first runthrough was a dispiriting waste of talent IMHO.

    The real impossible mission!

    by spike lee

How are they going to make a Christmas 99 release date? Since they have just started shooting, and are not even close to post and test screenings, I think this will end up coming out in the summer of 2000.

ok, i see your point, i kinda felt that way myself the 1st time i saw it but it UNDOUBTEDLY improves on repeated viewings although I definitely believe that John Woo's sequel will be far superior....

    problems with the new M.I.

    by plasticmonster

The last film had almost none of the feel that made the original show watchable. Nifty CG tricks aside, the plot was transparent, and wasteful of the talent assembled. The one shining moment was the extermination of Emilio Estevez. Any movie in which he bites the dust in the first five minutes can't be all bad.

    Repeated MI viewings

    by zcarstheme

Hmm.. I might well give MI another watch, actually. Two reasons ; to test Kev's 'repeat viewings' theory and, more importantly, to see Estevez go splat again. I'd forgotten what a pleasant surprise that was.

    too damn boring!!!!!!!!!!!!

    by bombay

THe reason why people hate MI is cos it's just BORING,BORING,BORING.The only time something happens is at the end,and even then it's too short. And also TOM CRUISE still looks like a schoolboy,in TOP GUN his girlfriend looked more like his mother. In every movie he makes someone else always steals the show, the guy has zero presence!!The sequel will be alot better, but only cos WOO is directing

The first was a really good film....

    by lungrocket

What the hell are some of you thinking??? The first one wasn't good???? You must be insane!!! I feel that john woo will have to prove himself here, not brian de palma. Mission Impossible is not about blowning people away in slow mo...with duel action 45. I love john woo as well...but this isn't really supposed to look wooish if you will. The story in the last one had great dialogue and it seemed spoken in almost it's own spy language....The seen with Kitrige and Ethan hunt at the resturant was priceless...as was the deception of the disk with tom cruise and jean reno (wether or not reno saw if tom actually had the original disk)....these where the scenes that made the film...not the action scenes....If you found M.I. boring, it was probably cause you couldn't follow the story. I am not saying it was shakespeare or anything...but the fact is that all the fan boys crying for a repeated woo fest of showering bullets and slow mo side jumps just doesn't fit this type of film...if it is gonna be just an action fest without a solid story....i just might pass on this one. Brian De Palma is the shit!!!

When MI cameout it got crap reviews, all the critics hated it and so did all my friends. The only reason it was a hit is cos teenie girlies like TOM. DE PALMA was offered the sequel but said no,why, cos he hated the first one aswell. That's why CRUISE went begging to WOO cos he needs someone to give it some kickass!!!.CRUISE is too useless to direct it himself!!!!.PS wasn't it DE PALMA who made that disaster BONFIRE VANITIES. WOO is a fool to work with CRUISE!!!,get back with CHOW!!!!!!!!!!

    Mission: Impossible II

    by mckracken

I honestly dont think that these guys will have a problem releasing it in December, 1999. "The World Is Not Enough" is also schedualed for a Thanksgiving 1999 release. Wasnt John Woo responcible for "Hard Target" and "Broken Arrow"? I was surprised with Broken Arrow, still unbelievable, but Hard Target sucked. As for Brian De Palma's first Mission, yeah it was basically a 2.5 hour trailer for some action movie called Mission Impossible. The plot was very confusing and people wearing and removing rubber masks only made it worse. All in all, I've seem FAR FAR worse movies than Mission: Impossible and I think everyone else has also. Remember, this movie will be competing against (if you can call it that) Universal Soldier II: The Return Of The Rerun.

    2.5 Hours??????????

    by darius25

Are you insane ????? The first MI was 99 minutes long. Overlong ???? Man, that movie wasn't long enough !!!! Screw the action, bring on the high tech gadgetry, the slick, turbo-paced cuts, and all the international intrigue with multiple backstabbings and fake disguises !!!!!

    Who the hell...

    by evil dead

... said this will be a typical Woo bullet fest? Just because he's directing the movie does not mean it's Hard Boiled 2. Was MI 1 a Hitchcock rip off fest? No, De Palma made the movie his own. Sure there were flashes of his style just like I suspect MI 2 will have flashes of Woo, but he DID NOT write the script. Broken Arrow was not a typical Woo film. In fact the only American Woo film that closely resembles his "heroic bloodshed" films is Face/Off. Even then it wasn't close.

    setting you idiots straight

    by moviemaniac

first of all, let me start off by saying, Bombay, whoever you are, you're a fool. I'm from bombay too BTW. The only reason you didn't like MI was because you didn't understand it, and just cause your dumbass friends didn't understand it is no reason for concluding that the movie is bad. As far as i know critics loved the movie, Brain DePalma never said he hated it, Cruise has never directed anything, (and no, actors don't just start directing movies).
The only reason u hated it was cause u wanted action, prolly couldn't follow the dialogue...right?
MI was a great flick...why? cause it was one of the few intelligent summer movies made..while the rest turn out to be cheap, melodramatic, high in action, CGI fests like Independence day, u rarely get to see a flick like MI which actually has a fun plot with so many crossings and double crossings and triple crossings. Personally, all those surprises (the mask at the end, finding out who the villain is, getting the disk) made the movie more interesting than any Roland Emmerich (of GODZILLA fame..hehe) or Michael Bay shit.
    just my 2 cents...

    why Woo shouldn't direct

    by moviemaniac

Woo makes amazing action movies. Lotsa explosions and guns and slo mo and all that, but MI is more cerebral and more about plot and less about action. DePalma's direction kept the 1st one from falling apart (and u know that anyone else would have screwed the movie badly...lotsa ppl had trouble understanding it in the first place).
Woo has a lot to prove, hopefully MI2 will not turn into what Speed 2 turned out to be.

    by spacey

Good job, moviemaniac. I have noticed a few of bombay's posts, and they are all MORONIC. This is the same guy who called GOODFELLAS boring. And I know for a fact Roger Ebert thoroughly enjoyed MI (read his review). Next time, think a little before you spew your unintelligent garbage.

Even De Palma said that there's no point in repeating the past,

    by wesley snipes

First, to all the people saying how the first MI was so great and what the MI franchise is and isn't about, I want to remind you that the first film had the original TV show fans near rioting. So it's not like it was following some original theme very closely and thus it's not valid to start pretending that the first movie is what MI is all about and any deviation is wrong. In fact, if I recall correctly, De Palma and Koepp's whole approach was just to explore what they think is interesting about the general spies/secret agent theme (which turned out to be about doublecrossing, who u can trust all that) and use the MI franchise merely as a backdrop, and not create some faithful homage to the original series. So when Woo comes in, he's simply putting his take on the whole spies business, also using the MI characters/setting as a very loose framework, just like De Palma did. Second, why would you want to get more of the same? Especially with the doublecrossing/paranoia type of theme, it would get boring fast! People would complain that the series was stagnating.. Hell, even De Palma said there was no territory left to explore for that particular take into the matter. So why no let Woo do the action version? More power to Woo.. I think sometimes people complain just for the hell of it without really thinking it through. Oh, and in case you're wondering I believe a report a while ago said that Woo was giving the film a super high-tech blade-runner metropolis style feel? But later reports say much of it will be set in a small village so who knows?

    YO BOMBAY!!!

    by lungrocket

Brian De Palma did direct Bonfire of the Vanities...SO WHAT!!!....He also directed Carlito's Way...great film...but i should say that probably isn't your kinda flick...there aren't explosions and gun fire every five seconds...he also did Scarface, The Untouchables, Blow Out, etc. He is a very intellegent filmmaker and your crap about him not wanting him to direct the next Mission Impossible had nothing to do with him not liking the first one...He said the reason he didn't decide to do it cause there was nothing new for him to direct with it...he felt he had done all he could with it. Did you think that the reason your friends didn't like it BOMBAY is probably cause they are idiots...go figure....don't forget yourself in that equation.

    WOO-hoo

    by bravenewsquirrel

Just to throw more fuel to an already flaming pile of horse dung. Mission: Impossible destroyed the series entire personality. Where was the teamwork? That's all I ask. The use of cliche "spy-jargon" doesn't make solid dialogue, either kids. And spies aren't really supposed to.. talk... But regardless
I wasn't interested in MI2 at all until I heard John Woo would direct. Cuz if you're going to ditch the whole premise of the show, you might as well have some poetic action sequences with fun guns. To any MI1 devotees... I just don't get you. How can you hold a single film in such a sacred place, when that film so hideously bastardized the very premise of its origin? Please, explain. I want to understand.

    Hello?

    by liquidnitrate

I don't at all understand the venomously bad POV some people have towards the 96 MI movie. Considering the production's unlikely origins, problematic history, and eventual $180M domestic box-office and $241M foreign gross, I respect and admire and enjoy the movie as one of the better and more successful espionage entertainments to come down the pike in a long time. If you don't remember, years prior to its debut, people had laughed at the concept of an MI movie as cornball. (After all, the Cold War's over, right?) After The Firm's success, when Tom Cruise asked Paramount if he could take over their MI concept as his own new re-interpreted spy series, they thought he was nuts. But he wisely saw its potential and developed it into a real winner. It was due out Thanksgiving 95, where it would have competed against Goldeneye, but due to production problems, editing problems, and significant re-writes and reshoots, never debuted until the following Memorial Day. (This release pattern could very well happen again to MI2, allowing TWINE to have this Christmas' action-spy demographic all to itself). When the Tom-Clancy-ish MI movie finally came out May 96, most critics were intrigued that it was an action movie that dared to attempt a "challenging" plot and cerebrally-cinematic puzzle approach to the genre, as opposed to the usual Willis/Stallone lowest-common-denominator idiocy. MI had a dynamic cast, superb DePalma style, a groovy Elfman score, production design from a Star Wars master, and the most rocking theme song since Duran Duran's 007 ditty a decade earlier. It is true that many audiences complained about MI's plot, but 99% of those viewers whom I talked to were so lazy and brain-dead about their movie-watching that they did not want to have to pay attention while watching a film, so I assume they also hated Usual Suspects and LA Confidential. Their defense of their POV of MI is usually that the movie was "dumb" "lame" or "stupid," when in fact these terms actually apply to their own movie-viewing habits. Could MI have been better? Of course. But all things considered, I felt quite satisfied that my ticket was worth the purchase price.
