BLADE RUNNER: FINAL CUT To Screen In A Few Theaters After All!! Are You In One Of The Lucky Cities??

Published at:  Nov 02, 2007 8:23:27 PM CDT

Merrick here...

This information was in a pile of stuff that was waiting to be posted throughout the last week or so. Problem is: we've been having irritating server issues over the last week or so...and posting was frequently a challenge, if not impossible. So, sorry this is a tad late...but...it's not too late for most folks.

BLADE RUNNER: FINAL CUT will be hitting theaters in a few select cities - both before the film's December release on DVD, and after. In some instances the film will be projected digitally - although non-digital prints are also in circulation.

Here is a list of cities where FINAL CUT is known to be showing. This list could feasibly expand or alter, so keep an eye out in your area for engagements.

By the way, this list comes from Bill Hunt over at thedigitalbits - so kudos to Bill for the legwork & getting this out there.

Here you go...

10/26 - Seattle (Cinerama, Seattle - 35mm)

10/26 - Washington D.C. (Uptown, D.C. - 35mm)

10/26 - Portland (Cinema 21, Portland - 35mm)

10/26 - Salt Lake (Gateway Megaplex, SLC - Digital)

HEY NORDLING YOU STILL HERE? WHAT THEATER IN HOUSTON?

    by deus vult

THANKFULLY someone @ aicn shows some love to houston...especially after I ripped about the batman site ignoring the fourth largest city in the country earlier this week in their assignment of on-location pictures.in any case, Nordling, please advise where in houston is the movie playing? and in digital yet?speaking of the list being in accurate, I'm not surprised houston isn't listed. we ALWAYS get the shaft! especially on this site too. considering harry and some of the crew live in austin and EVERYONE in austin HATES houston, it really makes sense why we always get ignored. you know, if you look at all the times harry posts about something happening at the austin original alamo draft house location, you might have noticed how NOTHING is EVER mentioned about the three draft house locations in houston and what they're up to. I wonder why? do they not do cool stuff? prolly not, considering only cool stuff happens in austin and every austinite will confirm that...cue black background / white text post please..........

    70mm is all but nonexistent

    by seattlebuff

the studios are loathe to make 70mm prints. they just don't want to put out the money. the same thing happened in the 90s when SPARTACUS was ballyhooed in it's major restoration. they said it was restored to it's Technirama glory in 70mm. then they released it across the country...in 35mm prints. but then, the teenage kids running the projectors at your local miniplex don't know what to do with 70mm.
saw BLADE here at the CINERAMA in Seattle. good show. great theatre. stretched 35mm print. coulda been a much better experience.

I'm just wondering what goes on inside the mind of distribution execs. "Gee, Nashville is a shoo-in for sci-films, by golly let's release it there where we'll get all of 20 people to show up. Yeah! Gonna rock!" CINE CAPRI in Phoenix is where they should be showing this, you folks in the know will agree. But noooo.

    by necgray

I already e-mailed Merrick to see if the early Boston date can be changed on the site, but just in case, I'll post here, too. I live close to the Coolidge Corner theater and called them to double check the date. Their website said Nov 16th, which conflicted with what I've seen here and elsewhere. The phone call confirmed the date on the website. Nov 16th, not the 9th.

Incidentally, I guess Orionsangel has a very, very specific idea of what "important" cities are that doesn't include Boston somehow???

    by deucefilms

Salt Lake, Baltimore, Minneapolis, Nashville, Durham and Columbus.... AND NO ATLANTA???!!!! No Orlando, Miami, Tampa, New Orleans or Birmingham? When you decide you're only going to screen this film in two cities in the southeast and the two they come up with are Nashville and Durham, you're obviously dealing with f***ing morons. Considering all the smaller cities getting notice, the people releasing this have made it painfully clear they have something against Atlanta, as well as a lot of other cities in the south. Someone's mommy or daddy must live there.

I can't believe I am the only one ticked off about one of the best lines in the movie being changed. It was a totally gutless move on Scott's part. There was absolutely no reason to do it.

    Digital projection

    by dedrater2007

Saw it in SLC digitally projected. Looks pretty good, you can see the digital-ness in the titles. And the blacks seem a little high, but can't compare it directly.

Tip: Look in your own backyards, people

Before ranting here, check out the "now playing" section of your local newspaper. That will confirm whether or not this film is playing in a theater near you.

no need to look for Waco, Tx being on the list... nor will it be in Lorena, Temple, Bryan, Salado, or Round Rock. you want I should list the towns going 100 miles north that won't have it?Two weeks ago i had to drive to Dallas for Nightmare Before Christmas in 3D.

    70mm

    by docbosch

Of course "the teenage kids running the projectors at your local multiplex don't know what to do with 70mm" sinc all mainstream theaters use 35mm projectors. It's not a little switched to change from 35mm to 70 mm, and it's not even a simple lens change (like from scope to flat). It's an entirly different projection system, the same way there are seperate 8mm and 16mm projectors. What next, asking for films projected in Cinerama without realizing that means three projectors screening on three screens simultaniously?

    again re: jeffallee

    by necgray

First of all, anybody comparing this line change to Gredo is missing the point. Gredo shooting first changes the nature of the Han Solo character entirely. Han shooting first demonstrates a LOT more about the character. AND it's the first time we see him in the film, so it's the establishment of the character. Batty has been seen plenty of times before the "I want more life" line in Blade Runner. To say nothing of the fact that "father" is more to the point of Batty's moral dilemma. It's not just some "fucker" that he's about to kill, it's his father. I like the line either way and would be perfectly happy with "fucker", but to imply that the change in any way diminishes the scene or the film is silliness. It's fine. It works in a totally different and equally valid way.

    Nicely handled

    by flossygomez

What a great way to retro-fit a 25 year old movie. He only fixed the parts of the movie with serious continuity issues. This is a way that a classic should be "fixed". Using subtlety and a light hand, unlike the complete radical change of atmosphere we got with Lucas ala "the LooneyTunes" Star Wars spaceport.

I still wish Roy Batty had called Tyrell Fucker instead of Father, because it gave the line more menace. But on the whole, who cares?

    Who cares?

    by jeffallee

I am not trying to be a smart ass or anything, but it was one of my favorite lines in the movie and it did seem important in the context of the film. I had no problem with any other changes in the film and I guess the film is as perfect as it is ever going to be which makes it even more annoying that he went with a stupid alteration which I think hurt the film. I guess I'll just have to stick with the director's cut over the final cut. I did hear a few groans in the audience when they heard the new line, so I am not the only person bothered by it.

how did it hurt the film????

    by necgray

Dude, Jeffallee, I'd love to see your point if you actually backed it up! How did choosing "father" over "fucker" change the film for the worse? It changed that scene, I will agree, but it's a tiny, dare I say almost insignificant change. How is it important in the context of the film? Especially when it's not like it was subbed with "furniture" or "rubber duckie". Father works just as well if not better than fucker. If you disagree, fine, but could you please back it up? I see Flossygomez' point that it's more menacing, but it's not SOOO menacing that it changes the face of the character or the film.

just saw it at the Music Box in Chicago

    by oisin5199

first time ever on the big screen. So interesting. I definitely dig this cut. Just for the mere fact that they cleaned up Joanna Cassidy's death scene so well and seamlessly, instead of that awful drag queen in a wig stunt guy stuff. It's been a few years since I've seen it, but I had forgotten how freakin' brilliant Rutger Hauer is, how good Harrison Ford is at getting the crap beat out of him, how Olmos was the 80s version of Leguizamo, how hot Joanna Cassidy, Daryl Hannah and Sean Young used to be, how dark the film is, how shocking the violence still is, and how well it holds up. Looking through today's eyes, I didn't realize how misogynist it is. Leon gets a quick death, Roy gets a noble, beautiful death. But the two female replicants? Long, drawn out, overly violent and torturous deaths. And the seduction scene with Harrison Ford and Sean Young. Maybe it was supposed to be read as sexy at the time ("tell me to kiss you") but it plays like a rape scene now. Knowing Harrison Ford's notorious attitudes towards women and Ridley Scott's own issues around that, it's hard not to read that scene a certain way. Still, a fascinating film and a nice lense into how different films were then. I especially noticed the vast differences in pacing, dialogue, visual cues, etc. Can't wait to get the DVD now.

    misogyny and noir

    by necgray

I think the misogyny was probably more a result of the mood that the film was attempting to invoke. All the women in the film are potential femme fatales, so it makes sense for them to be dealt with in a more aggressive manner. Not saying it's right, just saying that I think it has less to do with the filmmaker and actor's attitudes and more with the genre.
