The First AICN Event at the ALAMO AT THE RITZ is Set! See THE MIST with Frank Darabont Live!!! We're going nuts on this one!

Published at:  Nov 02, 2007 6:49:08 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... Sometimes I'm so happy with how things work out. Originally we were working to get Frank Darabont and THE MIST here for the Opening of the RITZ last night (Spectacular night btw) but THE MIST isn't on FILM yet and the New Alamo doesn't get its Digital Projection set up till December. However on Thursday, November 8th, we're doing a super special crazy dinner inspired MIST screening of THE MIST with Frank Darabont there to introduce us into his latest foray into the dark, twisted and wonderful mind of Stephen King!!!

Suffice to say - this will be a uniquely satisfying experience into the macabre... As Zach from the Drafthouse says - it'll be a tendrilicious dining experience. But this is your chance for a wholly unique and special experience unlike ANYTHING you've experienced in the world of film and dining!!! The details for how you can attend are found below - hurry up - I get the feeling this will fill up faster than you can believe.

We're going to pull out the stops on this one. You'll be talking about this one... right up until BNAT gets here (which, we're still working on how many we can get in, sorry - I know I'm killing you folks out there.)

Just got home from the Ritz

    by thegreatpumpkin

So fun - incredible. I just love the new smell of the place, and that you can tell that over the next few weeks as the kinks are ironed out and the place gets its finishing touches, it'll just be amazing. Theater 1 looks to seat about 200 people, give or take the balconies... it gives me hope for BNAT :) Also, I think that, somehow, the $5 shake is even better at the Ritz, but that could be because the temperature in the theater never rose above 38 degrees...

    Looking forward to the movie...

    by phimseto

...though to be fair the whole Mrs. Carmody subplot isn't just bad, it's awful. It's the religious equivilant the awfulness of Crash's racial monologuing or the weepiness of any of the current films about Iraq. I can only imagine, if rendered faithfully in the film, it will seem like there's two movies: a claustrophic thriller called "The Mist" and a Lifetime melodrama called "Mrs. Carmody's Bad Day". Actually, if was Lifetime, it would have a title like "A Woman of God" or "She Heard the Call", but you get the point.

    Mrs Carmody 'Subplot'...

    by karcreat42

Phimseto...dude, no offense, honestly...but you havent a CLUE as to what you are talking about here.
Its NOT a 'subplot', its part of the MAIN story, if anything...Carmodys scary ass perceptions of 'God' being the reason behind the coming of the mist are a main thrust to this tale...read the book, you wont regret it, its FANTASTIC...shes pretty much 'one of the main monsters'...;)

    by the brain machine

I'm all for seeing the movie, and trying new food Harry, but...

    1. Seaweed & Cucumber Salad in a Citrus & Sesame Vineigrette.

    2. Linguine with a Squid Ink Cream Sauce with Sauteed Calamari and Green Lip Muscles.

    3. Coconut Mango Milk Tea with Tapioca Pearls...

    This sounds just nasty, man.

Can I just get a cheeseburger and $5 shake??

    the show has moved

    by fingerpainting

so, in case you don't know, but the screening of The Mist has been moved form the alamo ritz to the alamo south lamar. AND, Frank Darabont has asked that there be NO food or beverage service during the movie. SO, this event has taken a big slap in the face. I'm still going, but the setback, on top of not getting into Butt Numb, has left a pretty sour taste.
But that will subside, cause the alamo rocks

    Fingerpainting...THANK YOU

    by the brain machine

    Come on, Harry & Friends.
if Fingerpainting hadn't posted that note, people might not have known that not only has the screening moved, but it is at 6:30 - not 7pm like listed before.

This is kind of a real bummer, man. I was almost as excited to visit the NEW Alamo as I was to see the film. I've been to South Lamar many times.

And part of the charm of The Alamo is eating at The Alamo. Granted, that dinner that was planned was a bit funky sounding, but damn. We paid for dinner and a movie at the new theater. Now we get just the movie at the old theater. Disapointing.

Where is the AICN, or Alamo email notice about this change?

    The Brain Machine

    by fingerpainting

Just to clarify, I got notified through an email from the alamo themselves, so i must have joined a mailing list and didn't realize it. Also, I made my previous note a bit confusing...there WILL be food at the show, just not during the actual film. The movie itself will start at 715pm. The Alamo says to be there no later than 630 so that you can be fed the crazy meal they have set aside for us.
Sorry for the confusion. I am with you about the Ritz. I was excited to about braking my ritz cherry with the mist. I have been to south lamar many times. But at least the movie didn't get cancelled.

    strange.

I get emails from the Alamo all the time, and never got that one.

Oh well, looking forward to the screening tonight anyway... Calamari in Squid Ink Sauce and all.

Happened to be in town - caught the screening

    by mister man

No comments, yet, I see. I'll just say, for now, that I disliked the film quite a bit. The on-the-fly filming in Louisiana was visible in every scene - and not in a good way. The performances were poor. Suspense? No. And, man, that Austin AICN crowd seemed ecstatic that Darabont didn't stick to his guns, and ended up allowing those annoying food serves to wander during the flick. Right at the start of the "earthquake" scene, three of 'em walked right in front of me, and ruined any chance of my being "involved" in the action. I've been waiting for this adaptation for over 20 years, and for me, personally, I wish a different approach had been taken.

    by fingerpainting

I will respect your opinion on any movie. I personally loved the movie and thought it was the best horror movie in a long, long time. But you can't complain about the food servers. That is one of the things that makes the alamo what it is. To be able to order a burger and a beer and have it brought to you during the movie! Maybe you had never been to a showing there and didn't know. That's fine. But if you have been there before, you should know what to expect.
