The Knight Industries Three Thousand Finds Its Driver...

Published at:  Nov 02, 2007 9:26:39 AM CDT

Merrick here...

His name is Justin Bruening, from ALL MY CHILDREN.

Surprisingly, a Hollywood Reporter article reveals a major spoiler for the TV movie/backdoor pilot. This is a spoiler which, despite my orgasmically spoiler-happy tendencies, I've avoided revealing thus far - as it's not terribly obvious through much of the script (which I reviewed a few weeks back - FIND IT HERE).

But, since the cat's out of the bag...

Bruening will play the son of Michael Knight, the character played by David Hasselhoff in the original series.

...says THIS ARTICLE.

In my previous piece, many Talkbackers conjectured this might be the case - they were correct. And, for Talkbackers who were saying the project sounded kind of intriguing...but they hoped Hasselhoff would be involved in some way...

Michael Knight does show up in the script - in a cool, open ended sort of way. No word on whether Hasselhoff has been recruited for the role, or whether subsequent fine tuning dropped the appearance completely.

Somehow I envisioned someone a little edgier looking, a bit more rugged in this role. The character, at least as presented in the draft I read, is a disillusioned ex Army Ranger, a struggling race car driver, and a lousy gambler. Brings to mind someone a little grittier than...well....Bruening.

This said, and to be completely fair, I've never seen the guy act & know nothing of his potential.

Maybe he grunges up real good?

They are doing a theatrical version as well as a TV version. It's the Battle of the Knights. Winner-take-all. Battle Royale.

I too wonder what type of car they will use. I recall that in the original series you never saw a Trans-Am on the road anywhere, because K.I.T.T. wasn't supposed to be a TransAm, it was some high-tech one-off. So they didn't want any other cars on the show that looked like it. I suppose they'll do the same for the new show, I just don't know what they'll use.

When Herc said the main character has a connection to the original series, I would have never in a million years thought that he would be the son of Michael Knight. What an original and refreshing idea? Who would ever expect that an updated version of an older TV show would have the main character of the sequel to be the son of the main character of the original. With original writing like this, how can this series go wrong?

    by tvguy4566

the real loser are the viewing public. Knight Rider was part of the cheese that was 80s action dramas. You take away Miami Vice (which had it's own cheese), and you are left with empty filler like Knight Rider, Hunter, Riptide, Airhawk, TJ Hooker, The A-Team (come on those Hulk Hogan episodes are cheesier than Cheese-Whiz), etc.

Wow, all that "cheeze" you mentioned and every one far more fun and certainly more interesting than the new Bionic Woman, or Heroes S2. You call it cheese I call it fun television with heroic characters that wasn't stuck on the bland PC button. I'll take TJ Hooker and A-Team over anything but Lost now days. We need more Shatner beating up punks with his batton. Only today they would do an episode where the known rapist and murderer defendent's rights were violated because he is a minority and was once diagnosed with a learning disability. Weak!!!! Bring on 80's sex, violence and fun!!! Screw this pseudo intellectual, PC, ultra liberal,Chick's doing kickboxing action show, bland horseshit. First, I meant Airwolf, not Air Hawks or Streekhawks. I don't even remember StreetHawk.
Second, I know when we were all were kids, shows like A-Team and TJ Hooker were cool, but have you watched a rerun of them lately? I loved Knight Rider when I was 10, but now I know it is whopping mound of Mortadella. And it isn't even the cheesiness of the 80s in general because no show embraced all things cheesey about the 80s than Miami Vice, but I don't think the show itself is cheesey.
Most A-Teams were formulaic down to the structure of the episodes. Every episode involved a good person being terrorized by an evil person. It would then involve bring the team together which always included breaking Murdock out of the looney bin and BA freaking out about flying. Every episode would have the team in an insurmountable position right before the third break and then a MaGuyver (sorry, forgot that one in the 80 cheese) moment where they would create weapons out of nothing to get out of it right after the break.
There are bad shows today, but 80s action shows were mostly cheesey and formulaic. There is no denying it.

    by picardsucks

What is so great in the genre besides Lost nowdays??? Battlestar may be but it doesn't look like we are going to get a 4th season and Universal has been doing everything they can to bury it. Heroes now sucks, the New Bionic Woman really sucks, The new Flash Gordon sucks, Smallville is poo, ect. ect. All we get now are dark, angsty, anticlimatic, PC,snoorefests with a bunch of cardboard Abercrombie and Fitch, effeminate actors, and unrealistically tough kick boxing expert maxim chicks. LAME!!! And VERRRRRY formulaic, no denying it. Transformers was a big cheezy 80's ish fun fest and it was a huge hit. Forulaic is fine with me as long as it's the right formula.

I'm not saying that this year is a particularly good year for action dramas, but this era over decade or so has been pretty good. We have had Alias, Heroes (at least the first season), 24 (other than last year), Prison Break was good for a season and a half, Buffy, Angel, etc. Overall, action dramas have become far more creative over recent years. Granted many of them burnout fast because of their creativity and need to constantly being fresh is usually their demise (Alias killed itself by constantly rebooting).
By the way, I think several of this year's shows have potential to be good action dramas if they can find their voice. I think Chuck (granted it is more an action comedy) is starting to get its groove. Reaper (another action comedy) has its potential. I even hold out hope for the Bionic Woman since they have gotten a good show runner and promise to up the action.

Look at Jericho last year, started slow and ended with a bang. It took a long time to set up the premise, but once it did it was one of the better shows on TV. Granted CBS almost killed it.

Streethawk was Knightrider except with a motercycle and instead of the car talking he had a buddy from a control basesee this is WHY I don't watch my nostolgic shows, I don't want my memories ruined. The formula you described for the A-Team is basically for all those shows. I can hardly watch Married with Children now because my memories of it are so much racier then the actual show. I spent a semster of college skipping class to watch Knight rider, belive me watching Micheal Knight was better then learning Econmic formulasI do see your point though and it is valid, for dramas this past decade or so have been great, even going back to the 90s with shows like Northen Exposure, Murder One, Twin PeaksI think a lot of the problem is people like familarity, when something different comes along they have difficulty embracing it. For example ABC in the late 90s took 2 big chances, the revamped much darker The Tempest inspired version of Fantasy Island and Rob Thomas' Cupid. Both were not conventional, and failed because of itspeaking of those 2 shows are we ever going to get DVD releases?also speaking of Fantasy Island how cool would it be if Mr. Roarke was actually Linderman and the Losties island was Fantasy Island...

    by pennsy

From TV Guide's always reliable Michael Ausiello: "Heroes' second season may be coming to a close a lot sooner than expected due to the forthcoming apocalypse, also known in some circles as the damn writers' strike.
Sources confirm that the show is going back and shooting an alternate ending to the Dec. 3 episode that, if used, would allow the episode to function as a **season finale** in the event of a strike. Originally, the episode was only supposed to serve as the conclusion of the current "Generations" arc. Should an 11th-hour agreement be reached and a strike averted (fingers crossed!), the alt ending would likely be scrapped.
GET THIS FUCKING WRITERS STRIKE SETTLED, PEOPLE!

And did you know Catherine Hickland was married to both of them? Knight, and Hasselhoff, not Justin, LOL. Justin's wife also just left AMC so look for guest appearances by Alexa Havins.

I know Hasslehoff and that guy aint no Hasslehoff...

    by sledge hammer

...now whether this is a good thing or a bad thing I'll leave that to your own imaginations. Word is they're trying to get Hasslehoff back to basically play the Devon Miles mentor type role, but whether that'll happen or not might greatly depend on just how drunk (or not) the Hoff is when someone slips him the contract to sign.

...and this guy is a TERRIBLE actor. Even SOAP OPERA FANS make fun of his acting. His character Jamie is called LAMIE by AMC fans because he is so horrible and boring an actor.

"Last time they cast from a soap opera didn't we get Routh"

    by big dumb ape

Puddleglum, keep you better keep something in mind in making that comment...
Christopher Reeve ALSO came from a soap opera background. So it's not like it's really THAT much of a drawback, and given the Reeve connection it certainly didn't hurt the casting of Superman. As for Routh, he wasn't actively working in soaps when we was cast, he merely had that on his resume. When he was picked, he was actually going the classic unemployed actor route of tending bar to make some money. And besides, in the end, Routh was actually GOOD (at least I thought). Hey, he was basically hired to look like Reeve and act like Reeve to keep Singer's vision of post-Donner continuity going, and that's exactly what he did.Hell, say what you will about SR as a movie overall, but for the most part even the critics agreed Routh did what he was hired to do and did it well. He was one of the few GOOD things about that film...

so there's a superman returns' mentality here?

    by theonecalledshoe

It probably will be as sophisticated as the bionic woman show (likely a nearby time slot and yes I'm being serious.) I just wish that Orlando Bloom would get involved as a producer or something (cameo) since the guy said he was a big enthusiast for the series.

so, i assume he won't look exactly like on this picture, he'll propably be much grungier when they start shooting.
i've never seen him act, so i'll see how he'll fit into the new Knight Rider without any prejudices!

and y'all are giving this guy too much pretty boy credit. Unless he's had surgery since he took that West Hollywood mugshot AICN posted, he's actually got a kind of rough New York look. And his wife Alexa Havins looks like a younger Kira Sedgwick.

Havins is also from All My Children.

Rent Night Rider DVD. . it was really stupid

    by greatczarsghost

This is a show that is fondly remembered by some who if they rent the DVD would not get past the first disk. After the first season even Hoff is just walking through the shows. Do yourselves a favor and root for a re-boot of something a little better than Night Rider like maybe BJ And The Bare.

They pulled of a Knight Rider reboot already in the 90's.

    by mistergreen

It was pretty bad. I think I saw one episode of it.

And there was a Knight Rider wanna be too... There's so much you can do with a car as a main character... Those days are over. Put it to rest.

The originals of most these shows - Knight Rider, Charlie's Angels, Macmillan and Wife, the Name of the Game, Dallas, Dynasty, Starsky and Hutch.... - moved so much more slowly than today's shows. That's why there's some company taking those old shows and condensing episodes to 8 minutes - because you CAN.

uhh... cornponious (and Vegas/Sith) feel free to rewatch the pilot episode and prove me wrong, but I do believe Michael LONG owned a TransAm and they turned him into Michael Knight and his TRANSAM into K.I.T.T. - yes I know far too much about this show (I also loved Airwolf, so no hope for this one)

Also Prison Break is STILL great!

Sorry if we feel the need for a rough and tough guy to be the star of the show. I, and I'm sure the majority of true fans will agree, do not want to see a pretty boy crying and trying to fix his hair while involved in dangerous car chases.

    by crichtonastronut

He was the real cool factor in the original series. Everyone was like his exasperating children.

They oughta get the original guy if he's not retired. Bet he's still got game. If they can't get him, they gotta have a Brit for that part therwise what's the point.

One thing I liked about the 90s reboot was the hot blond chick in the Red KITT convertable. And she wasn't such a terrible actress either. I rember liking her better than Knight.

RIP Edward Muhare and KITT wasn't a Trans-Am...kinda

    by wiboomer1

OK, Edward Mulhare passed away in 1997. So you can look for other people to play the mentor role. I think that role (not character, maybe even an older Michael Knight) is what the Hoff wanted to play/serve in the new adaptations.

KITT, or more specifically, the Knight 2000 wasn't a Trans-Am. In the pilot, Devon explains that the car may look like Michael's old car, the that is the only simularity. The outer shell had a revolutionary material that it was formed from; it wasn't metal, and it wasn't plastic. It was also powered by a turbine engine, hence the famous whine it made. Where was the exhaust? Didja think they ditched the 305 Crossfire V-8 150-190 HP turd of an engine and slap in a turbine?

The Knight 3000 should look like a car sightly ahead of anything on the market. Deals need to be made with the Auto Companies, 'cause you really don't want a concept car being the Knight 3000, and it shouldn't be a foreign car.

Could it be a Corvette? It's the only true sports car that could fit the bill. The Retro cars (Camaro, Mustang, Challenger) don't have the aero shape that the Knight 3000 must have. The Knight 2000 had no indentifers, that nailed it as a T/A. It was a black shape that couldn't be mistaken for another vehicle. So this means no grille or headlights or tailights or turn markers, etc...it really didn't need them.

But the car has to be based on a real car in near production, and sadly not the 25 year old relic the the Knight 2000 is. Geez, has it been 25 frickin' years...
