You smell something funny? DIARY OF THE DEAD 2 poster from AFM!

Published at:  Nov 01, 2007 8:17:46 PM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I love Romero, I really do. It does offend me a bit when my love of Romero is put into question because I disliked DIARY OF THE DEAD. I have a DAWN OF THE DEAD one-sheet framed on the wall in my room, I have posters, trailers, film, DVDs, toys and soundtracks from most of his films, including MARTIN, CREEPSHOW, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and DAY OF THE DEAD.

But I didn't like DIARY OF THE DEAD, so I get tons of email saying I'm a Romero hater. Not true. I just didn't like that movie. And I'm not alone. I've talked to a lot of big guys in the world of film journalism, distribution and fandom in general who had the same reaction I did. It's not to say that those who dug it are wrong, but I do think it's valid to criticize what didn't work in the flick.

I can't say I'm happy that he's going on to do DIARY OF THE DEAD 2. I'm sure he can make a better movie then the first entry, of course, but if he's going to do more zombie flicks I'd like to see him continue the world that has been more successfully executed or do more one-off stories.

However, I do concede it's good news that he's working at all and I will look forward to anything he does, even if it's a sequel to a movie I didn't like.

The always gory Ryan Rotten nabbed a picture of the DIARY OF THE DEAD 2 sales poster up at the American Film Market for shocktillyoudrop.com and I relay it to you good folks:

    by sebastianhaff

But I still stand firmly by what I told Mr. Romero to his face at Comic Con this year: I'll follow him wherever he goes. And I mean that int he most non-gay way possible. Actually, I take that back. I love this George Romero and his zombie films. I want to have his children.

I thought it was just playing festivals or whatnot. Well, I never got to see Bruiser either (and from what I've heard, that might be a good thing).

What is "Diary Of The Dead"?

    by the visco kid

Is this a documentary or an actual film? I have never heard of the 1st Diary, so forgive my ignorance.

To sum it up (even though there is debate about this definition), Diary of the Dead is like the blair witch project but with zombies. I'm still waiting to see the first one, which won't be released widely until 2008, unless I"m mistaken...why not put a release date for the 1st movie in the body of this article?

Any Romero work is good! The guy's a legend! He finally gets a bit of budget and he screws up Land of the Dead I only saw it once and we havn't had a sniff of Diary yet in the UK but I will happily support the guys sucesses and fuck-ups with equal enthusiasm because he's worked his ass off his whole life making some of the most influential films off his own back with a bunch of mates who share the same care free spirit and that's a fucking awesome and hard thing to find in the synical holywood driven machine these days!Bring on more Romero Dead! Long live the Dead!

    Tales from the Crypt-Zombie Style

    by redfist

What Romero should really do is: establish the world of the zombie apocolype with this film and then do one shots based on it. Every few years make a film based on characters living in this new world. As the series progresses, it gets darker and more desperate as it would in reality as supplies and safe havens grow fewer. I love zombie movies but I am starting to loss faith in Romero after Land and this one which I hear is a stinker.

    by knuckleduster

The man's just cashing in now, milking the cow till it drops over dead (actually, it's already dead, in true zombie tradition). I love Dawn of the Dead. I like all three of the original trilogy, really. But Romero is overrated, and not even half the director he used to be.

With Romero sticking to Zombie movies. As long as he tries to make something fresh out of it. Now I haven't seen Diaries yet, but after Harrys ramblings about it I look forward to it a lot. I know how much the old trilogy affected me when I was a boy.

    by gch888

If Romero is now willing to make straight-up sequels to his films by adding a "2" to it then I'd rather he did it with Dawn of the Dead.

    by duanejones

aka _there's also chocolate_. ray laine ditches judy ridley-streiner in order to get it on with beyonce, knocking her up in the process! judd apatow meets a 1971 pepsi commerical by way of destiny's child! though, with abortion now legal in the u.s., will anyone give a shit? let's apply the same question to _diary 2_...as tomthumb&c. rightly observes, the poster is way frickin' _30 days of diary_ for g-d's sake, further reinforcing the painful, unavoidable assumption that mr. romero is hitching himself to a bandwagon others had hitched to him and his still-peerless early "dead" films. this meta-hitching reults in making him swallow his own "tail," ouroboros-like. if only that was the film itself -- truly, at this point, mr. romero blowing himself will have greater aesthetic import, to say nothing of entertainment value, than anything else mr. romero has done "...of the dead" these past two decades. it's almost as if his talent died and, i don't know, came back to life, sort of, feasting on what was interesting and intelligent and walked fast in mr. romero's work...let's have a nice hand for "irony," everyone!
