DANCES WITH WOLVES 2: BUFFALO BOOGALOO in the works!!!

Published at:  Nov 01, 2007 5:08:44 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I kid with the headline. The flick is actually going to be called THE HOLY ROAD and will be scripted by Michael Blake who also wrote the screenplay for the first film and penned the novels both films are based on.

Costner is not returning to direct. Instead a bloke by the name of Simon Wincer is stepping up for the flick, which takes place 11 years after DANCES WITH WOLVES and focuses on the Comanche tribe as it deals with encroaching white settlers. The HOLY ROAD of the title refers to the transcontinental railroad.

Wincer has had a pretty bizarre career. Recently he directed the Spielberg TV series INTO THE WEST, but he's also done flicks like DARYL (Cool) and CROCODILE DUNDEE IN LOS ANGELES (not so much). In between are LIGHTNING JACK, THE PHANTOM, FREE WILLY and HARLEY DAVIDSON AND THE MARLBORO MAN.

Simon Wincer made THAT too man!!! I can't believe you omitted it from this list!!! If anything, this is the production that you SHOULD be screaming about here!! It's Wincer's biggest accomplishment and for crying out loud, it's also one of the biggest, most extraordinary, even beautiful Westerns ever made!! Some say, maybe THE best Western ever made!!! Why the heck aren't you mentioning it here, Q? Hey man, how about putting it up there with the other movies? Bet way to recommend Wincer for this movie!! Words cannot express, words cannot express...

    I don't know...

    by skynetbauxi

what you say may be true. but then I have to say that I probably don't just "like movies", but rather that I only like movies that I really like :-) to me, it's all about the story. I mean, THE GODFATHER may be the highest-rated movie ever on IMDB, but that doesn't mean that I automatically have to be interested in its story. I couldn't care less about some mafia family and their criminal and personal activities. the same goes for "masterpieces" like CITIZEN KANE, GOODFELLAS or THE DEPARTED. those stories just bore me. and I'm not talking about how "good" or "bad" a story is, but how entertaining and/or interesting the story is to ME. those "masterpieces" may be ingeniously written, directed and acted. but those properties alone are of no value to me when I sit down and watch a movie. I'd rather watch BILL & TED'S BOGUS JOURNEY any day than some movie about people that don't interest me, and which has nothing imaginative whatsoever to offer to me. don't get me wrong... if YOU really like GOODFELLAS, that's great for you! I'd never say GOODFELLAS is a bad movie. it simply doesn't interest me. I prefer VAN HELSING to the original DRACULA a hundred times, and I enjoy M:I-2 infinitely more than THE BOURNE WHATEVER-TY. that may seem blasphemous to some people. but does it really matter how well-crafted or "exacting" a movie is? isn't the only important thing how well it entertains me? I don't think there's an ABSOLUTE definiton for a "good" or a "bad" movie. actually, I think it's quite funny. on the one hand, people tend to think of themselves as something of an "elite", if their tastes are "exquisite" and not the same as what the masses like. on the other hand, talking about movies, it's all a matter of democracy. the more people like a movie, the better it has to be. IMDB's top movies are a result of "democratic voting". the Oscars are a result of "democratic voting". so what if 99% of all people think GOODFELLAS is a masterpiece and ARMAGEDDON sucks. I love ARMAGEDDON, and I'm proud of it! :-)

Rent it ASAP. Costner is, yes, GREAT. I wasn't expecting much but this movie was really impressive with only a few shortcomings. He was totally in character and at the height of his acting ability. William Hurt as his split personality was fantastic, and they played so well off each other. Even Demi Moore was pretty good.

by the way whatever happened to Pacino, just thinking about it now, i don't think he ever had a hand in the great roles he did, it was more luck and a time and a place kind of thing, cos seriously his attitude to film and the rubbish he has put out is ridiculous. Anybody could see that movie with Matthew mccoughnahey was going to be a steaming pedastrian piece of shit. That kind of movie would have sold tickets in the early 90's but not these days. Fuck cinema has changed. This celebrity culture has seperated movie star from actor, and brought up the quality of standard cinema fare and also dumbed the other half down. Well shit is less pedastrian.

then I should probably like CASINO, because I like THE PHANTOM MENACE :-) the original trilogy was fun and everything, but the prequels finally brought some depth and subtlety and emotion and philosophical topics into STAR WARS. yeah, I know you're about to mention Jar Jar. so, there's a ridiculous character in those movies... have you never heard about the archetype of the FOOL? STAR WARS is all about mythical archetypes, and Jar Jar fits right in there. he's not SUPPOSED to be funny or even very likeable! and seriously, in EPISODES IV - VI, we never go beyond "good vs. evil" and "I sense your conflict". but the prequels deal with more intelligent topics, like for example what can turn an ordinary person to the dark side, exploring the question whether there are "genetically evil" people or whether it's all just about the life you live and where it takes you. also, the political themes in the prequels are actually quite intelligent. an evil power, backed by financial institutions, creating false flag incidents to intiate a war, in which the evil power actually supports both sides, in order to gradually gain more power and take away people's freedoms, ultimately forming an Empire. sounds quite familiar, I'd say.

I think a young Pacino was comparable in some ways to DeNiro. As Michael Corleone, he owned that role. His performance in the first was incredible, and he got darker in the second, probably with some help from working face to face with Lee Strasberg. Dog Day Afternoon? Truly one of the classics, owing to his and John Cazale's performances. He of course does well with good direction. I think he had a bad decline after Scarface, I have no idea what happened to him, he got the shittiest roles. But after his comeback around the time of Dick Tracy, he had some very strong roles. If he works more with Michael Mann, he would totally rule. He was a knockout as Lowell Bergman in The Insider. I keep rewatching that movie in particular because of his and Crowe's performances. I wasn't crazy about Insomnia, but he was just killed as Lefty in Donnie Brasco. With Pacino, it's all about the roles. He can't lift a mediocre movie, and I think he has chosen some bad ones. But when he gets the good roles, holy shit he can hit it out of the park. Have you seen The Insider? Def check it out. It would change your mind about Pacino.

The problem I have with the Prequels is this: every single thing you said sounds great in concept, and on paper. And I don't doubt that Lucas had those ideas in mind to craft a meaningful saga. BUT ...

The execution was, IMO, horrendous in every way imaginable. I think this was one of the rare instances where I would have preferred to read the Prequel (if written well, which George does not) instead of watching it. I seriously believe that, had some other director and writer taken Lucas' ideas and executed them differently, it could have been a work of great merit. I saw a glimpse of greatness in ROTS during the opera scene. But I understand that the dialogue was honed by someone else. And that really proves my point - that Lucas missed the boat by not letting someone else write and direct his PT.

Ok you lost all my respect, basically admitting you have no interest in a good film like goodfellas but think the phantom menace is good and brigns depth? There is no depth. Especially in Anakin's fall to the dark side, it was like something form the silver age of comic books, way too cheesy and easy and just thin, comic books have since grown up and Lucas should have aswell, Vader is the most famous villain next to Satan yet he has a pretty sloppy backstory, i expected the greatest fall from grace in fiction, a man losing it because of the world like Ra's Al Ghul in Batman Begins. What i got was something Lucas pulled out of his ass.

Don't get me wrong i'm a massive Pacino fan, I own most of his work from the 70's. Dog Day Afternoon, Serpico all have prominent position in my dvd collection. I'm just saying in recent years, with the change in movies and movie culture(Movie stars don't sell movies anymore like old times) It kind of showed how Pacino was lucky in a way, due to the horrendous films he has made, that recent one with McConoughey being a prime example, who gives a fuck about a pedestrian film like that anymore. Maybe in the early 90's. I forgot about the insider though, but that was Rusty's show all the way.

what exactly is it you find so horrendous about the writing or directing of the prequels? it's not like a READ those movies, so I did get all the things I said from watching the movies. for some reason, they worked for me the way they apparently were supposed to work. I'm not sure that necessarily says anything bad about me or my taste ;-) same as the MATRIX sequels blew me away, and not just the action, but the stories and all their ingenious subtleties and themes. perhaps I "got" those prequels and sequels the way they were meant to be "gotten", and many other people didn't.

what si wrong with it? look at Anakin, what a shitty character, what shitty 5 year old writing where he falls to the dark side because the other jedi dont recognize his power. what the fuck is that shit? It should have been the deepest most profound change in fiction, like I said akin to Ra's Al Ghul(the batman begins version) or Doctor Doom. If it was going to be not so profound it could have at least been like Superboy Prime and that kid lost his entire Universe whilst he was right in his assumptions of how the heroes of the world have failed to an extent.

I don't even know about this Pacino/McConaghhey movie. Maybe it's Pacino's Hollywood Homicide and he needed a paycheck? The thing about Pacino is that as big and great as he is, he doesn't seem to get involved in the production side. He's just a working actor, and as such he just takes roles he might like. The same thing applies to Meryl Streep - she's undoubtedly a great actress, but has her share of flops too. Whereas guys like DeNiro and Clooney and Pitt produce their own movies and can make their own way, pick and choose projects, and have more creative control. I think Pacino just needs his agent to do a better job.

GANGS OF NEW YORK and THE AVIATOR, and I just know from those movies that Scorsese doesn't make movies that hold much interest for me. I think you have to accept that people's interests regarding themes, topics and stories are different. Scorsese may be a master filmmaker, but his films just bore me. there are different things that can make a movie interesting to me. one of them is the "escapism" factor, where I just love seeing things and stories that I'll NEVER see in real life (STAR WARS, LOTR, VAN HELSING, RIDDICK, ALIENS/PREDATOR). another possible form of interest can be "simply silly fun and action" with likeable charakters, like in LETHAL WEAPON, ARMAGEDDON, TRUE LIES. there's also the level of "intelligent science fiction", such as STAR TREK and THE MATRIX. and I also like weird, unusual tales like BEING JOHN MALKOVICH, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND or BUBBA HO-TEP. but I really don't see why I'd sit down and spend even 2 hours watching some ordinary people doing their boring real-world things. I can read a newspaper for that kind of "entertainment".

well, if THAT is how you "understood" the reason for Anakin's fall to the dark side, then I'm really not surprised you didn't like the prequels. "because the other jedi dont recognize his power"?? you must have watched a very different movie than I did ;-) perhaps you should see it a few more times... or perhaps you're just not willing to fully embrace that kind of complex, emotional and political web of motivations .

Because I love both films. They were both perfect, IMO. Just very different movies. Now as far as Best Director goes, yeah, Scorsese obivously got snubbed (again). I also like Casino and Gangs of New York. Casino was basically 'Goodfellas: Las Vegas', but Goodfellas was an awesome movie, so who cares. And I can appreciate GoNY for the masterpiece it almost was.

...on the post regarding Costner being able to pull off an older Bruce Wayne. He was very good in Mr. Brooks (the overall film not so much, things start getting a bit busy when everybody on the screen is a serial killer). And on the prequels discussion, for those that say Revenge of the Sith is the best movie, maybe....but considering Anakin's turn to the dark side is handled so poorly (and it's supposed to be the pivotal moment of the new trilogy) it might actually be the worst of the three.

But I actually do believe that Dances is a superior film to Goodfellas, IMO. Oh yeah, I most certainly love Goodfellas, but I find that Dances was a much more technically challenging movie (the buffalo scene is an example) with superior cinematography.Dont get me wrong--Goodfellas has its obvious plusses, too, but I think that year for the oscars was something similar to Return of The Kings v. Master and Commander. On any other year, Master would have won, but Returns was just that much better, is all. Same thing happened in 90/91, I think.

    Now, in Skynet's defense,

    by moondoggy2u

Scorsese has one flaw in his films that could turn off general movie-goers: pacing. With the exception of Cape Fear (possibly because its a remake?), his movies seem to come off more as high-budget, R-rated Television Mini-series. Maybe its because he mostly does life story type cinema, or perhaps he takes a more literary approach to his films, letting his characters and their evolution become central to the story as opposed to events, but whatever the reason, pacing problems seem to be his flaw/signature and might explain why he's gotten snubbed so much at the oscars. Thats not to say that other directors are flawless or anything as asenine. In my opinion, no director is perfect, because every work of art has a set of negative aspects to at least some part of the viewers (or even the artist) that coincide with the positives, and directors are most certainly no exception.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who enjoys movies for their entertainment value over quality production. I do appreciate those movies as well, as long as they entertain and or interest me. I think that's the way a movie should truly be judged, based on if it accomplishes what it sets out to do, not how well it was made doing it. I'll choose Citizen Toxie over The Good Shepard anyday.

I have found that both movies are good for repeat viewing. Anecdotally speaking, there are quite a few of my friends who rewatch Dances every year or so as well as Goodfellas. Also, the thing I've noticed about Dances is that it is a film that plays to both men and women, whereas Goodfellas skews more to men. Perhaps that also explains why it won that year?

Now that was brilliant. And if you complain about pacing in a scorsese film something is needed about an attention span. it's 2-3 hours of a life, not that much. Then again I listen to alot of music that lasts 10 mins or more like Isis, Cult of luna and boris.

is an *awesome* movie. it speaks to the viewer from a different place than goodfellas, and really it's not fair to pit the two against each other, because goodfellas is fantastic in a whole other way. as for holy road, this has been in the works since the mid 1990s, i think. i read the book, and it's ok. without costner's vision and direction, though, i'm not sure it would be worth seeing. and i say that as someone who has an extremely deep love of DWW.

    Dances With Wolves 1 & 2

    by lornsorrow

Well, I'm not a huge Costner fan (I think his version of Robin Hood was pretty poor), but I love Dances With Wolves and think it one of the best movies ever made. However, I think it probably best to just leave it alone and not try for a sequel, especially if Costner is not going to direct it. And, is he supposed to star in this? The article said nothing about that. Beside, this HOLY ROAD story sounds iffy, and depressing, to me. Here's the book description at amazon: http://tinyurl.com/ywvu47

"Eleven years after winning an Academy Award for the film screenplay of his novel Dances with Wolves, Blake offers this dramatic sequel to his tale of army Lt. John Dunbar and his life with the Comanche Indians on the Great Plains. It is now 1874, 11 years after Dunbar deserted from the army to live among the Comanche. He has married Stands with a Fist, the captive white woman raised by Indians, and they have three children. Dunbar has forsworn the white man's ways and is accepted as Dances with Wolves, a full-fledged Comanche warrior. These are hard times for the Plains Indians, however, as the advance of the white man results in war, misery and a gloomy future. When a party of white rangers attacks his village and kidnaps his wife and youngest child, Dances with Wolves goes after them in a wild attempt at rescue. Alongside his tale of Dances with Wolves's personal turmoil, Blake more forcefully tells of the conflicts among the Indians regarding whether to fight the white man or to make peace. Raids, ambushes, atrocities and bitterness on both sides can have only one conclusion, despite an Indian peace delegation that goes to Washington, D.C., to meet the Great White Father. This novel focuses less on Dances with Wolves and much more on the confused plight of the Indians, who cannot understand the white man's greed, duplicity and brutality. Familiar characters from the original novel reappear here in more important roles, making this a more powerful historical novel with a much wider scope. Blake's ability to evoke sadness and joy, action and emotion is as strong as ever, and the ending hits hard. (Sept. 11)Forecast: Fans of the movie version of Dances with Wolves, starring Kevin Costner, will fall enthusiastically upon this sequel, though once they've bought it, they may be taken aback by the high ratio of history to heroics. A Western reading tour will attract extra attention."

What more is there to tell that wasn't already said in the original? Indians getting screwed over by the white man? check. Dunbar and Stands are married? check. Dunbar will act as a bridge/teacher for the white man? Again--check. I'm sorry, but a sequel just seems like a last ditch attempt by an author and a fading star to grab some old glory and, of course, paychecks.

Moondoggy2u, I think the reason Michael Blake wrote the book was to document the complete annihilation of a tribe, and how once outright hostilities ended, political hostilities started. That said, it will be nothing like Dances with Wolves and will probably fail to have any of that film's appeal. It will probably tank at the box office.

Or is it another John Dunbar movie? If so Costner should come back both as director and actor. If not I don't care about it. Open Range ruled! And so did Dances with Wolves. May not have been better than Goodfellas but that didn't stop it from being a great film. The Departed wasn;t better than Pan's Labyrinth or The Lives of Others - but that doesn;t mean it's not great.
