Robert Rodriguez's SHORTS? Plus news on GI JOE, WOLVERINE, THE BOX, BRUNO and more!!!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. There's a fantastic article up at Variety that details all the flicks that the studios have gotten ready pre-strike. So, there's a detailed list of what the big flicks are at all the big studios that are sure things, not effected by this strike.
CLICK HERE TO READ THE WHOLE ARTICLE!
The bullet hits are:
-GI JOE is a go at Paramount with Stuart Beattie's script and AVATAR's Sam Worthington the likely lead (sorry AB King, no mention of Sly involved... so you don't need to send email 4873 saying he should be... okay?).
-Robert Rodriguez has a mystery project called SHORTS (maybe a short film compilation ala FOUR ROOMS? Just a guess) at Media Rights Capital.
-Media Rights Capital is also funding Richard Kelly's The Box, Sacha Baron Cohen's BRUNO and Ricky Gervais' THIS SIDE OF TRUTH, although only BRUNO has studio distribution through Universal.
-Land of the Lost, State of Play, Death Race remake and The Wolfman are among those that made the cut at Universal.
-Wolverine is locked and loaded at Fox, with a rewrite from Jamie Vanderbilt and Scott Silver. May 2009 release.
There are more, but those were the big ones. Be sure to read the Variety article!
Seems like Sam Worthington is going to be a pretty big player in the future of geek flicks, doesn't it?

I hope they change this to a "Real American Hero" like it's supposed to be. I know I am still proud to be an American. Bullshit that it's international like the crappy Street fighter movie.
-
$200 million opening. And I heard he's playing Tintin also? And rumor has it that he's about to step in as a replacement for Gerry Butler in EFNY. Talk about geek flicks.
-
if universal drops bruno once they realize the subject matter..

It's like if Lucas had decided since everyone liked Han so much, it'd be a good idea to focus the Star Wars flicks on him rather than Luke, because we all know "badassery" is much more important than a character that the whole friggin' universe revolves around. /sigh A Wolvie flick isn't needed. And if they don't recast and rewrite the role of Sabretooth, a Weapon X themed solo pic is damn near pointless. I hope one day, someone actually gives us a X-men flick, and Slim gets the spotlight he deserves. Scrap the Magneto spinoff and just morph that into X-men: Year One. This franchise needs a reboot, it needs careful casting, and they need to take things slowly. They're sitting on possibly the biggest sci-fi property next to Star Trek, Star Wars, and LOTR, and it just boggles the mind how shitty things have turned out so far. But then again, it was expected. I mean, we ARE talking about Fox.
-
I'm pretty sure we've had one source all ready suggesting that the new script would focus more on the classic G.I. Joe we children of the 80s know so well, and that the Snake-Eyes/Storm Shadow dynamic would factor in, as well. But this is the first I've heard of Worthington. Who's he supposed to play? Seems young to be a character like Duke -- who everyone seems to want to cast first -- so I wonder who the 31 year old will be if he's a star. Maybe it counts for something that the people this guy's age were the target demographic during the golden years of the toys / comics / cartoons?
-
The guy's an Aussie. I dunno what variation of G.I. Joe those kids may have been getting back in the day.
-
What exactly are you proud of anyway?
btw, street fighter the game was international. you know, with fighters from every corner of the earth and fights taking place around the world in this huge global competition and shit like that. -
All I hear about is a weak script in need of rewrites. Then there's a director without any unique visual flair which means it'll most likely look like standard FOX Studios product.
-
IGN is reporting that Paramount Pictures has now given G.I. Joe the green-light with a budget said to be $170 million. Filming begins in early 2008. They are also mentioning that they were advised that George Clooney is not involved at all with G.I. Joe. There was early rumors that Clooney was to play DUKE. Moviehole is reporting Sam Worthington is also in talks to headline Paramount’s “G.I Joe” movie – assumingly in the role of ‘Duke’.
-
Huh?
-
That why I always thought the animated show sucked. How can you win a war if no one ever freakin dies!?!?! Every damn time something got blown up, the jackass would parachute out or climb out amidst the rubble. Stupid. GI Joe is best left to the back yard dirt mounds and living room forts of youth. Unless they actually make it realistic and people do actually die...then it just becomes a war movie with fictional characters with a slight sci-fi edge...possible but kinda 'been there done that' I think. It could work I guess...time will tell.
-
Paramount and Hasbro are already getting bad press from talk radio over the "globalization" of GI Joe. I wonder if they'll give in?
I haven't found a single person that's intrigued at the idea of gung ho UN soldiers. I suppose we'll spend the first hour of the film negotiating with Cobra Commander and Destro to cease their terrorist activities. -
But does hollywood have to piss on everything? They can't make an original movie to save their lives so they make remakes and adaptations, but then they can't even get the adaptations right! Then they wonder why these movies don't make any money.
-
I do remember hearing Sommers always goes for people that are relatively unknown (Will Kemp and Oded Fehr, for instance), but I'm still waiting to see where Kevin J. O'Connor fits into this... Anyway, Sam played the lead in the post-apocalyptic "Macbeth" film from Australia.

They'll fight for Political Correctness wherever they go!

As an Australian I am totally flabbergasted with this fucks success. Sam Worthington is as thick as two short planks and just as wooden. Am I missing his mystique or have I just been spoiled by the kind of genuine acting talent we usually export? Can someone please explain why this guy is not working exclusively in Burger King commercials?

This rushing to get mmovies into production before the writer's strike has proven one thing to me. That is that Hollywood will take any half bakes, stupid idea and try to make a movie out of it just because they think they might not be able to. Here's to a shitty year of movies next year, and maybe the year after that.

Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity? Really? "entity"? G.I.J.O.E.? W.T.F.?If they needed an international agency, couldn't they get C.A.T. (covert anti-terrorism team), U.N.C.L.E., S.H.I.E.L.D., T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents, or The Blackhawks? And if they have to make a movie about a doll, why not just give Captain Action an A.C.T.I.O.N. Team? They could even stunt-cast Mike Myers as the original Dr. Evil. Of course they can get Myers to do his Shrek/Fat Bastard Scotsman accent as Cobra Commander, since we all know what a huge threat to world peace the Scots have been. I can just picture the kilt-clad hordes of Cobra attacking to the skirling wail of the bagpipes, bombarding our Non American Heroes with haggis and used sheep while the Brussels, Belgium based J.O.E. team... er, 'entity'... fights back with sprouts and waffles. The Gen-Xers who grew up with the cartoon show and comics - and their kids - are gonna love this.... Not! (See, I worked in another Mike Myers reference to tie it up thematically. I'm that good.)

I thought SHORTS was a story wrote by Rebel. Might come out like shark boy.

several sites have already posted this, why Clooney would do this I don't know, but he apparently walked away from White Jazz to do this. The guy did do Batman and Robin though.

...only without quite the same level of 'teen idol' good looks, but every bit as wooden and every bit as much of a charisma and talent vacuum as Hartnett has proven himself to be. And unlike Hartnett (who at least has an eye for interesting scripts and working with the right people, even if his own talent often doesn't quite match up), Worthington is dumb as all fuck and couldn't spell project, let alone pick a decent one. I don't know who him or his agent are blowing to get him all these opportunities, but man, it sure seems to be working. There are a lot of Australian actors who deserve this kind of a break, but sadly Worthington aint one of them, unless there's some sort of miracle turnaround now that he's gone hollywood. Still, I guess if there's anyone who might be able to squeeze a decent performance out of him, it'd be James Cameron...and hopefully he will, as I'd hate to see him fuck up Cameron's first film in way too many years with a shitty lead performance. We shall see.

The G.I. Joe comic was (and is) the more mature version of the property. I'm hoping this movie is not entirely cartoon-based. In the comics, there was actual death and real bullets fired from real guns. Even if you base it on the original toys themeselves you'll get less silliness than the 'toons.
And Doctor Zoidberg, I'm curious if you're a fan of other, superhero comic books? And if so, is G.I. Joe really as "gay" and unrealistic as a bunch of muscular guys in multi-colored tights and capes flying around shoots laser beams out of their eyes? -

Actually Larry Hama's run on the original Marvel Joe comics was
by sledge hammer
...He took a potentially silly as all fuck concept and basically created the entire mythology from the ground up (that was then watered down and dicked with in the cartoons, and in the lesser comics that followed). His G.I. Joe run really was some top notch reading, and though there was plenty of action, it was all character based, with a wide ranging cast of characters that really did have distinctive voices and characteristics. I dunno what the current ddp comic series is like, but the old Hama written stuff was great.
-
Well that was a decent attempt at damage control. They didn't refute anything about G.I.J.O.E. being a multinational group though. Maybe they can reanimate Raul Julia to play Serpentor?
-
Wow. Video game sales will go through the roof as people try to fill the time.

...could be gold. He said on UK radio recently that it was about an alternate universe where nobody has the ability to lie...except him. And in a world where only you can lie, "it's like being Superman or something." I like that shit.

Why do I think this movie will only be attended by (closet) gays ? Because I think it is. Am I right or right ?

Thank GOD Rodriguez is getting away from the Weinsteins...
by copontheedge
...and Rose McGowan would have made a great Barbarella. She's still ridiculously hot so you have the sexy quotient, and she can act but she doesn't come with too much baggage or star ego. They'll probably throw some idiot in like Jessica Simpson or a legitimately big star like a Jessica Alba, who will NOT get naked!

Who remembers the SILENT G.I.Joe comic with Storm Shadow?
by copontheedge
Who did the art on that? That was very influential in that era and some top notch work.

The press release stating the use of "The Pit" is good, but ultimately the movie will suck. Here's why: DUKE. Duke sucks. He's too much of a boy scout, force-fed hero. And more importantly, he is NOT the commander OR the lead character of the G.I. Joe team. HAWK is (the commander). General Hawk. Duke came in two full years after Hawk, with the third wave of action figures and issue #22 of the comic. Hawk was there from day one, and a General outranks a First Sgt. anyway. The focus on Duke proves the studio is not putting any intelligence into the movie, that it is instead going with the cookie-cutter approach. No style, no originality, nothing unique. Why don't they just cast Dolph Lungren and be done with it?
-
TheJazzTerminator is right. There was no mention of "American" heroes in that press release at all. Maybe it clears things up for some people but not for me. And keep George Clooney far far away.
-
When you're a kid, you can just instantly accept the massive cast of characters, mainly because we were buying the toys, reading those little yellow stats-cards on the back of the packaging, and watching countless episodes. X2 showed that big ensemble action movies can be done well, but the problem with G.I. Joe is that the vehicles and weapons were just as big stars as the people. Unless they trim down the cast to just three or four, and only have a few cool vehicles, it will simply be too unwieldy.
-
But I ruined my copy by getting a pen and adding what I thought was cool dialogue to every box. I guess I needed the interactive experience.

I think it was Michael Golden...

the 80s Joe. Anything else would be ridiculous.

And it's starring Ice Cube? I'm there!

It was announced at least a month ago on quite a few sites what "Shorts" is. I know for a fact that ComingSoon had a snippet up about it. Anyway, it's a kids movie. Robert's been saying for awhile now that he wanted to do another kids film and was exploring different options. That's why he was flirting with possibly doing "Land of the Lost" or "The Jetsons". Seems he abandoned both in favor of an original project, which is great. Anyway, it looks like he'll be making "Shorts" (and maybe finishing "Machete"?) before he actually gets around to doing "Barbarella" and "Sin City II".

What the fuck? -
Between meals, he's making mainstream films that fizzle at the boxoffice...and he somehow still has time to make "art" movies that die at the boxoffice.
-
"Silent Interlude." Written by Hama, with art by Hama and Leialoha. This issue introduced Storm Shadow, and hinted at his connection with Snake Eyes (and Snake Eyes's relationship with Scarlett). I just scored a near mint copy of this on eBay last month. One of the best single issues in comics history. It's too bad they didn't have Hama pencil more issues back then, in addition to writing the series.

Fred Durst directing "Comeback," with Ice Cube starring.

As much as I love Ali G and Borat, I think Bruno is the best of the three. I'm going to stand in line now for this movie.

I sure hope that the proceeds that Hasbro gets from the international sales of the movie outweigh the crap their going to take from the heartland.
They're already starting to get ripped on talk radio. If the film goes into production without any more changes then this move is extremely stupid. How much call is there in Brussels, Oslo, Pretoria, Beijing for a G.I. Joe flick?
I know as someone who very much enjoyed the patriotic 80's G.I. Joe I would love to see an honest live action G.I. Joe movie. Unfortunately, Hollywood being so leftist they couldn't possibly create anything nationalistic. Hasbro just wants to make a movie. They were probably talked into the stupid format changes by some pot-smoking, flag-burning writer. They don't want to be seen as un-PC so they went along, but in today's reality this is going to blow-up in their faces.
They've forgotten the history of their own creation. Yes, GI Joe was sold as Action Man in other countries. However, I really think that they are over-estimating the Anti-Americanism that exists globally. The worldwide left simply screams the loudest.
I'm not saying that the movie shouldn't have an international flavor, but the whole change of the acronym is moronic. In addition, no Cobra? Cobra disbanded? Give me a break. Ignore the stupid comic continuity, people who see the movie has no clue about the status of Cobra. Yes, it has Destro and The Baronness who as we know were an item. But you really need the established Cobra villain as their foil. This is a totally assinine plot change which is going to confuse the fuck out of people. Oh, I understand we can't possibly have a movie about a U.S. based military force battling an international terrorist organization with the US coming out victorious. That would go against all that Hollywood stands for.
Hasbro needs to grow some balls here soon. They need to see that this is NEEDLESSLY going to piss off half a country which buys their toys. -
Godawfully Imagined Jumble Of Everything.
Go Blow! -
could be.
-
Are you suggesting that G.I. Joe is going to be a six-movie deal? To compare it to Star Wars isn't quite realistic.
-
For the love of all that is holy, how do you screw THAT up Hollywood?
Pathetic.
As I've said elsewhere, maybe they can make a "Captain America" movie where "AMERICA" is an acronym for another international ripoff.
This is kind of like Superman Returns "Does he still stand for TRUTH, JUSTICE, and..." wait for it: "all that OTHER STUFF"
