First images from the comic adaptation of WANTED by Timor Bekmambetov, starring Jolie and McAvoy, pop up at Empire!!!

Published at:  Oct 30, 2007 4:11:18 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. This is one of the more interesting geek movies in development at the moment. We have a comic book flick directed by NIGHTWATCH's Timor Bekmambetov and starring James McAvoy, Morgan Freeman and Angelina Jolie. It's shooting in Prague, I believe, at the moment and the good folks at Empire got a first look at stills from the flick. Looks pretty good, but Bekmambetov's weakness has never been his visuals. I have high hopes for this flick, though. Here are a few of the pics... be sure to click on them to visit Empire's site and see the other few pics!

    This is gonna suck!!!....WHY?

    by redfive!

The genius of the book is that its a comic about Supervillians, the supervillians kill all the superheros, they rule the world, they control the govt and the main guy goes from being the guy everyone beats up to being a badass supervillian who not only rapes celebrities but kills and enjoys it for being beat up.
I can guarantee none of thats gonna be here and there ditching the entire superhero plot which is what makes it amazing.

    Plus...

    by redfive!

Casting is completely off, wesley is blonde not brown and looks like emenum, the fox is basicly halle berry {black} and morgan freemans character is a made up character.
Plus in the comic wesleys dad looks just liek tommy lee jones.
Talk about not doing anything right.

this would be a movie adaptation, not comic adaptation, right?

Suck?? Doubt it. But we know...

    by mr. guiyotinne

Timur does takes lots of liberties -kind words for saying he does THE FUCK he wants- over the materials he adapts...

When I read "Night Watch" after getting the film I couldn´t barely recognize it! And man, Day Watch?? Should have been Night (kind of) Watch 2nd part.

    This isn't Wanted

    by affleckwasthebomb

The main focus of the plot is about Supervillian, removing that changes this completly. It's going to suck so badly. They've up the role of Jolies character because she's the "name" in this pile of shit.

Why would they take out the supervillian angle?

    by lex romero

I can understand them removing some of the less appealing character traits (the rape, murdering a whole police station of cops for fun (though that did work for Terminator)). But why take out the stuff about supervillians when superheroes films are so popular? How ace would it be to see a bunch of supervillians fighting a bunch of DC-lite superheroes and winning?

Who said they'd ditched the hard R stuff

    by thinboyslim.

Where does it say none of it is happening? Of course they're not gonna show a full on rape scene ala Baise Moi but its very easy to show intent of a rape, see any decent violent sexual movie. The whole supervillian part is the basis of the book so how would it be removed and why when an anti-superhero movie is being cried out for after the failings of spidey3, xmen3, ghost rider, etc.

From the last article: "The hero will discover the whole world. It looks ordinary, but it's not. It's an industrial world filled with weaving machines, lots of traps, lot of looms flying back and forth and predicting the future. The looms weave these fabrics, and the fabrics have a pattern, like a binary code, that has information. The weavers can read the fabric — they see the structure of it and they can read its messages. Then they know who has to be killed to keep the balance of the world."

    Looks good so far.

    by knuckleduster

I liked the comic, but always wondered how this would be approached as a movie. Hope they keep it as gritty and nihilistic as the source material. Bekmambetov gives me hope.

    It might look good, but...

    by emptystan

Sorry to say it, but I'm worried this will just be a mess. Bekmambetov has a great visual style but his story telling just doesn't do it for me. Night Watch was amazing to watch but trying to follow along it was muttled and convoluted. I thought Day Watch was better, but not by much. It'll be interesting to watch preformers like Freeman and Jolie try to wrap their head around whatever Bekmambetov is trying to do with the story. Hopefully it's good but I still love a train wreck when the actors just look confused.

I'm sorry but your using Wiki, basically a forum where people can write what they like on any subject they like, to gain insight into the movies plot and shooting script?
Has anyone at AICN actually seen a script/draft of this movie?

one time i'm glad they're deviating from the source

    by waggy

i usually like Millar (even if he is a little one-note) but i absolutely fucking despised Wanted. strangely enough, i think this looks like it could be a fun nihilistic action movie, and i'm glad they took out the costumes. and really any excuse to see Angelina sex it up and fire some weapons is cool with me.

I wish it was Jolie circa Lara Croft

Instead of Jolie circa Mary Kate Olsen. Someone needs to tell her that veins and scrawny legs are not sexy.

    by jacksonspole

i'm diggin' the visuals. a lot. morgan freeman in the webs. angelina leanin' out the car blastin' some ass. you guys sound all negative on this one, but that's to be expected. i'd be more surprised, if you were positive. but, regardless of your whining, i'll be there opening night...

Dropping the supervillians was a bad move...

    by boneyard

The most fun about Wanted was figuring out the DC Universe equivelents to the villians and heroes in the comic. It's the superheroics and the freaky characters like Shithead, Mr. Rictus, the Imp and Fuckwit that made that comic as fun as it was. It doesn't matter how many great effects Bekmambetov can create (bullets that fly around walls... yawn) or how "Hollywood" the cast is... this movie is not going to feel any different than a "Transporter" movie to me... What a wasted opportunity.

wow - this actually looks great

    by www.revyou.tv

Not anything like the comic book, but moviegoers are going to eat it up. Very "300" in terms of being overly stylized. And yeah, Morgan Freeman never looked so good... ;)

Fans of the Red One digital camera

    by munro kelly

Hey guys, the majority of the movie is shot on film. The Red One is only for the vfx. I have already seen some BTS and they had Panavision and Arriflex film cameras. Even at the Red site they said it was only for the vfx.

The supervillain concept is hard to sell.

    by knuckleduster

A hard-ass action flick with guys running around in bright spandex and capes? Not a lot of execs would greenlight something like that, and not a lot of viewers would buy it without sniggering. That said, I hope they keep the basic concept of an underground society of bad guys controlling the world, with some form of costume for some of the characters (that cool mask better be in there). And they better keep the controversial stuff like the rape and massacre at the police station. Otherwise, why bother?
