Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. It's not much, but Edgar Wright commented on the news of a US Spaced via his Myspace page... and I don't think it bodes very well:
The interesting part of that is, no-one has been in touch with me at all. Haven't deigned to get in contact. So my involvement is indeed very unclear.
P.S. I can confirm too, that Simon was never contacted either. I don't really want to get involved at all, but it infuriates me that they would a) never bother to get in touch but still b) splash me and Simon's names all over the trade announcements and infer that we're involved in the same way Ricky & Steve were with The Office.
Also, it's worth stressing that I will not be profiting from this reversion, nor do they have to get permission from me to make it.
One more thing...
I'm calling for everyone to refer to the U.S. version of Spaced as "McSpaced" from now on.
I can't think of a better distillation of the whole idea.
If it wasn't an iffy idea in the first place, this only cements the iffiness and the fact that the studios are just looking at this in their typical way. "The Office was a funny show and now it's a hit here. Let's do that with another show that was funny and popular in England..."

Fox is developing an American version of “Spaced,” a ‘90s British sitcom about a young man and young woman who pose as a couple in order to rent a cheap apartment.
The U.K. version was directed by Edgar Wright and co-written by Simon Pegg, who also starred. The same team went on to create the movies “Shaun of the Dead” and “Hot Fuzz.”
Adam Barr (“Will & Grace,” “Desperate Housewives”) is writing the American version. McG (“The OC,” “Chuck”) is executive producer.

While it would be great if this went the route of The American Office I don't think they will ever top the original. They should just air the BBC show, like Adult Swim is doing with Darkplace.

Should I be optimistic? Yeah. Will it help in terms of this show? No. Spaced is a rather rare gem of a show that worked as a sitcom. While being absolutely NOTHING LIKE A SITCOM. If they want to do this show right. They will hire someone who gets the tone of the original and tries to Americanize it as little as possible. If not... balls. Total and utter freakin balls.

And I thought I was the only one to toy with idea of an American Spaced. But yeah, I'll be damn if that shit will ever happen. You just can't replicate the magic that Wright, Pegg, Stevenson, and company created with that series. It's just too fuckin' perfect to Americanize.
Plus, have network executives forgotten about the godawful Fastlane series or the Charlie's Angels movies for that matter. McG should be banned from ever making a movie, along with Brett Ratner. -

I'm American, and hey I love the American Office something fierce, but this is just unnecessary. Americanized or not (and there's not much to alter, really, in the transition) I just don't see the magic being recreated. That show was so intimate - there's little chance of that loving touch being replicated and fattened to twenty-some 22-min. episodes. Side note: How I Met Your Mother kind of has an American, mass-market Spaced vibe going. Of all the traditional "three-camera, live audience" sitcoms on the air, that one is tops.

I have no doubt that an americanized version will be very popular in America because they will remove all the profanity and references to drugs and sex and bodily functions, all the quirky throw-away moments, all the film references (since nobody in the target audience has ever heard of, say, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest), as well as all the humor and turn it into an insipid Three's Company clone. They will also replace all the ordinary looking actors with above-average to stunning looking actors with no talent.
Oh, and I'm an American, by the way. -

I just don't see any way this could be Americanized. The beauty of Spaced was the interaction of the actors. You could never put a cast like that together again. You can't catch lightning in a bottle twice.

It'll probably suck, because 9 out of 10 shows turn out that way. And it won't be the same, or even possibly as good. But with a good cast and good bunch of writers, there's no reason it couldn't be a good show. And it'd create a market that'd lead to the DVD release.

Although NBC was lucky with the American version of "The Office" (mainly because they have Steve Carell and a writing team who made the show their own), this will be a huge failure, because no one here could be as good as Pegg, nor will the original series' intrinsic loopiness translate to the US. It's a stupid idea.

What the hell is this? Spaced was a statement (and a very funny one) about disaffected young adults in a particular time, and in a particular place. It was about the children of the 80's not being ashamed to be geeks and failures.
Remaking this would be like remaking Easy Rider. Taking the best statement of a generations ideals and trying to hock them to the highest bidder.
Edgar, Simon, Nick, Jessica - if you want to work with Spaced, finish telling story and put it to bed. Better to have a 12 episode "Fawlty Towers" that has a crystal spirit than 120 episodes of soul-less Fodder TV. -

SPACED was great because of the people that were involved, not the premise of the show. Imagine if it had been made by the same production team that was behind, say, 'Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisp' Would we be seeing a remake then? Probably not.

Think about it. Spaced is about two twentysomething flatmates (Simon Pegg and Jessica Stevenson) with Simon's heterosexual life companion Nick Frost. This relationship between Nick and Simon will be hard to replicate unless they get Jay and Silent Bob together in the Americanised Spaced.

Fucking hell- I feel really, really, sorry for you guys. I struggle to think of a less appropriate writer than that dick that does Will and Grace (possibly the least funny 30 mins ever on telly). How on earth are tehy going to adapt an episode like Uncovered? E and Raving? slackers? This was inevitable, but sadly pitiful. I read somewhere that the difference between American and British comedy is that in American comedy every episode will have a clear winner, and in British comedy every episode will have a clear loser. America just doesn't seem to do loser comedy very well. I really feel for my TB brethren.

There is a double dvd you can buy. Third disc is a features one. Inside the Box set there is a message from Pegg, stevenson and Wright from 2004. Paramount co-owns the rights with Channel 4 or did. 30 years ago the bbc created a series about an accident prone dimwit called frank spencer. That Made Micheal Crawford a star then he went to do Phantom. Fox has announced that it is going to americanise Some others do have em. I think the reason why they remaking these shows is to dilute the british content to the point where they can pass these shows off as original creations. The Cosby show from a few years. Original. Absolutely not. It was created by David Renwick and it was called one foot in the grave. it would be like having a news quiz on Comedy central and calling it the news quiz, hosted by a comedy actor and capatained by two comic writers. Comedy Central will never have heard of have I got news for you. Channel 4 also had long running show pinched by the US. Whose Line is it anyway. ah, friday nights on Channel 4 in the early 1990's. Bliss. followed by Clive anderson talk back. Then along came big brother. ughhhghg. but at least they are going to get creative again are CHannel 4. This was the channel that made brass eye.

you're a bit confused. 1 Foot in the Grave came years after The Cosby Show.Channel 4 is far worse than it was in the early nineties- which is a real shame and can be traced straight to the rise of Reality TV. Brass Eye is fucking magic though. Screenwipe is on BBC 4 tonight (at least I think it is) and that always reduces me to tears of laughter.

was sublime. extraordinary the lenghts dom Jolly went to get laughs. The way the uk works now the show is no longer doable. With the Kumars and GGM it all comes down to comedy being subjective. Kumars started off well on BBc 2, when it had a small audience, but as the show got bigger a move to bbc one was a gaurantee and therefore the show became dire straightaway. This does seem to happen with shows on the BBC. They start off with a smallish audience, the office is a good example, then the ratings grow and the show gets moved up to a prime-time audience. As what happens with Extras. though Extras stayed on BBC 2. The second series wasnt as good as the first. Writing a comedy/drama about a comedy, didnt really work. The first series worked Because it allowed gervaise to get some of his fans to play versions of themselves. Gervaise, will get typcast playing an asshole. He seems to be good at that. being an asshole.

Charlie Brooker is just a second-rate Victor Lewis-Smith. Lewis-Smith is a genuine wit, whereas Brooker just seems like a miserable old fart who is taking pot-shots at a world that is changing from the one he grew up in.

I finally watched this show a few months ago on youtube. The whole show is geeky genius. There's no way they can replicate the humor, the characters, or the incessant drug references on american network tv. This is going to go either two ways, both bad. First way, the show is just utter trash and somehow remains on the air for years and years. Or two, the show somehow ends up brilliant and hilarious, and is subsequently cancelled after two weeks. Either way, we lose. -
It will probably be an insipid remake, but end up running several seasons because somebody will watch that crap even though the soul will have been ripped out of the original for the remake.

It won't work with normal DVD players - people in the US will need a DVD player that reads PAL format as well as American NTSC format. Fortunately they're available cheaply, and the codes can be gotten for that. As for just suggesting to do it to a normal NTSC player, Allfather, I'll refer you to your own post title. ;)

This is so bad. You can't recreate the charm of a homegrown series like Spaced.
The US are capable of producing amazing things in the field of film and television, but the studios are developing a nasty habit of just cherry picking works from other nations rather that encouraging their own homegrown talent. -
the one we all remember and then there is the show he made around the time his son was shot dead. That Cosby Show, ie the one he did when his so was shot is the americanised version of one foot in the grave. It even credits Renwick but you would have to look really quickly to find it. and think it says something like based on one foot on the grave by david renwick, but the credits go by in a flash.

Really, the plot is paper thin and half of what makes it work is the dry Britishness of it all. Could you imagine what kind of corny jokes they'd pull out to adapt this for the states? The Office was a bit different because even over there the element of office discomfort is transferable. EVERYONE can relate to that, I don't care where your from...

...before they DO americanize Garth Merenghi's Darkplace, despite the fact that much of the humor in that particular show doesn't merely derive from crap American shows from the 1980s, but from how these shows were VIEWED by Brits (and to a lesser degree, Europeans at large). A lot of the priceless moments are riffs on aspects of crap American shows that most Americans don't pick up on.

I had to look online for bit torrents of the original "Spaced" series as I kept hearing about it but was never able to locate it on DVD. I have to say that the show was genius and I don't think I am crazy about the idea of an Americanized version. It's true that "The Office" has proven itself as a great program, even if it lacks the subtlety of it's British roots, but I love both versions and am always happy to see great BBC shows get the attention of American audiences.
Anyway, I saw it mentioned that the reason why we have not been able to get "Spaced" on DVD yet is due to the music rights. If that is so, can someone explain how and why this always happens whenever a movie or television series is to be released on DVD? What I don't get is, if the producers, directors, or whoever is in charge of these productions is able to get the music rights at the time of the original filming, why can't those music rights carry over to the home release of said production? It isn't like the filmmakers and the musicians couldn't work out a deal in the very beginning that will make everyone money off their work, no matter what form the finish product is viewed in.
I hate it when a movie or TV show finally makes it to DVD only to be missing some of the music that really fit the film perfectly, or just having to wait and wait to get a copy of the show myself because a minute-long snippet of some song I don't even care about couldn't be used again for the DVD.
It's all about money and greed I guess. Who cares about the fans that made the show/movie popular in the first place? -
A lot of the humor comes from the Family Guy pop culture geek references. The fake marriage thing is a problem, but make the landlord all uber Christian or just hung up on needing a married coupon and it should fix that (not that anybody is going to get too hung up on it, Three's Company seemed to survive a similar set up). Other than that, it's just a matter of the writting and acting being funny. I don't think being "wacky characters living in an apartment" is exactly impossible to traslate. It's like saying a Brittish version of 2 1/2 Men is impossible to pull off because it's too American.

SPACED is one of the best fuckin' shows I've ever seen in MY LIFE...and to think that this was airing in the UK in '99 when all we had to deal with was wondering who was sleeping w/ Ross or Rachel on that twit-fest FRIENDS!!!! And Jesus, wasn't THAT just a British remake too!?!? WE SUCK!!! SPACED, was the brainchild of Simon Pegg and Jessica Stevenson...it was vry specific to those 2 VERY talented people and when you added the visual style of Edgar Wright...you got the magic. It was alot more complex than "the wacky characters living in an apartment"...the show made you care for these characters due more to their flaws than their attributes. FOX...make a fucking show...but why call a bastardized rip off that without the involvement of Pegg and Stevenson will be just that..SPACED?!?? Especially since they obviously don't care enough to get the thumbs up from Wright.

Come up with your own goddamn ideas! The americanized office was good because it had real talent behind it along with the blessing of the British counterpart. This is just taking someone else idea and making it yours. It's rip off and a sure sign of no originality what so ever. Fuck McG and his pseudo popularity. it's a FOX show, which means it'll be cancelled after 2 episodes. Of course if it's awful, then Fox will have it on for years and years. Mabye Fox will do do this show what they did to Futurama. Put it on at 7 on sundays during football, then have said football match constantly preempt the show, then cancel the show because "nobody was watching."

these guys are too busy to care. They have probably moved on from spaced. Pegg ows his career to Paramount comedy, so he is going to stay schtum. Before Channel 4 went down the toilet, it was like a spring board for comedians and comedy writers. Spaced is Dark comedy. Some of it is hit and miss, Pegg can be annoying and in a way they all can be. If I had one criticism of spaced it would be Wrights tendency to repeat stuff. The young tim and Mike in the tree, Brians painting expressions and daisy trying to be a journalist. He hasnt lost that tendency and brought it into his films. |It looks like filler. Like he has run out of ideas.

Brains Life: Friends wasn't a remake of a British show. In fact, Friends was hugely popular in England, so much so that they kind of ripped it off with Coupling, though that was a good show. Of course we than did a straight remake of Coupling and made it bad.

I had it reversed...I knew we remade Coupling, but also thought that FRIENDS was a remake as well. Didn't care for it...the UK's Coupling was good, but still formulaic...not nearly the gem that Spaced was.I picked up a region 2 DVD of Spaced a WHILE back....CYBERHOME makes a great 30 dollar DVD player that you can make regionless...worth the 20 bucks plus 10.

The fans of these series have already seen the series it was based on. These Americanized versions are made purely for the majority of couch locked morons in the fly-over states that don't have passports, let alone travel plans or the intelligence to believe that anything "foreign" could possibly compare to their boxed set of the Blue Collar Comedy Tour. These people are not only helping for the production of BAD television and movies, but they are HALTING THE NATURAL PROGRESSION OF HUMANITY. For some one that loves my country as much as I do, I REALLY hate most of the people occupying it.

My buddy works in Virgin Mega Store on Sunset and Edgar Wright pops in every low and than (I dunno is he lives in BOTH L.A. and London?)...he mentioned that the Spaced DVD's are NOT happening anytime soon. It would be a massive investment on the part of whoever puts them out to get all the music cleared again, and they haven't been able to get backing in the States. Same shit with the DVDs of MTV'S THE STATE.

I never would have looked it up if it wasn't for Shaun of the Dead and AICN. THe original was funny because there were funny people behind it. The orginal Office was funny because there were funny people behind it. The American Office was funny because there were funny people behind it. I really think the same holds here, even if the chances probably aren't good. While Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and Spaced were very funny, they WEREN'T the funniest and most innovative forms of entertainment ever made. At least half their humor came from spoofing other people's material. I believe it's possible for other people, EVEN Americans, to do that in an entertaining way, so I say give it a chance. At worst, it might draw more people to the original series like the Office did.

They'll try to make the characters too nice and likable anfd end up making them boring and implausible.

It't about respect. BBC respects their audience enough to hire the best writers ansd resect ther writwers enough to let them write the way they want to.
American networks are obsessed with finding some magic formula that everyone will like forever and they'll never to change it or make anything different. It's insulting to American writers and producers and it's insulting to us viewers. -
