WEDDING CRASHERS’ Dobkin To Direct DC Comics' THE FLASH!!

Published at:  Oct 29, 2007 7:52:18 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

David Dobkin, director of the excellent “Clay Pigeons,” as well as “Shanghai Knights,” “The Wedding Crashers” and “Fred Claus,” will direct the big-screen adaptation of DC Comics’ “The Flash.”

It will deal with the Wally West version of the Scarlet Speedster, said also to be a key element of George Miller’s coming “Justice League” movie. Adam Brody, 28, who played comic-book geek Seth Cohen on "The O.C.," is said to be in contention for the West role in "League."

The 1990 "Flash" TV series dealt with West's predecessor, Barry Allen, also said to be featured in Miller's movie.

Shawn Levy (“Big Fat Liar,” “Just Married,” “Cheaper By The Dozen,” “The Pink Panther,” “Night at the Museum”) has left the "Flash" project.

Read all of MTV’s story on the matter here.

Flash (presumably the Wally West version) coincidentally co-stars in next Saturday's new episode of "The Batman."

Flash isn't "Watchmen" or "Maus," but it would be a goddamn shame to see it degenerate into a comedy. It's fun to be the Flash, I'm sure, and emphasizing that would make a great movie. But it's not FUNNY to be the Flash. Seriously, like 90% of Flash characters die in some way or another...there is a little drama throughout Flash history.

i'd honestly forgotten shawn levy was previously attached so when i heard this i went "fuck, the flash movie is gonna suck now", but i guess that was already decided on. do any of us think JLA is going to do well enough to warrant spin-offs anyway? which begs a bigger question: if so many franchises depend on JLA being successful, wouldn't you think WB would be making a greater effort to make a quality film of that one rather than go for the quick cash-grab?

I wish someone could make a good t.v. show out of one concept. I mean, Smallville, for all its faults, isn't terrible.

    by waggy

as long as there's enough good ones to make studios want to continue making them. Marvel's movies started sucking but DC came in strong with Batman Begins. now DC is going down the tubes, but Marvel seems to be getting their act together with Iron Man and their in-house production company. and let's not forget movies like Sin City and 300 which have demonstrated that there's lots of money to be made mining comics for stories. when we see a year where there are 3 $100 million comic movies and all 3 bomb, then i'd start worrying.

Warner Bros. is Now Contradicting it's Previous Logic

    by kal reeve

The WB's explanation for not using Routh and Bale in "Justice League" is that their franchises exist outside the "Justice League" movie universe. So it makes absolutely no sense that the Flash film franchise will exist within the "Justice League" universe. It seems like the WB is coming up with convenient justifications any time criticism over the "Justice League" production is thrown their way.

Don't they see why Marvel is doing so well at the Box-Office?? I just don't get why they always want to commit theatre suicide with their characters. Their animated stuff is AWESOME....and thats thanks to Bruce Timm....I just don't get their philosophy.

funny thing about all this JLA furor

    by waggy

that mo-cap rumor that was since debunked would've solved all of this. it would have made a clear separation in the film franchises, made it easier to swallow new faces in familiar roles, brought the budget down to a figure that didn't require Star Wars-size box office, and it would have taken much of the pressure off the film in regards to spin-offs. you could use it to gauge interest in characters without risking killing future solo films if it didn't work.

Why is it so hard for Warner to get DC comics movies produced?

    by robert_g_durant

In recent years, Marvel has manage to launch Blade 1-3, Fantastic 4 1-2, Spider-Man 1-3, Iron Man, Hulk 1-2, Punisher and Ghost Rider.

Meanwhile Warner Brothers has given us one Batman movie and one Superman movie.

What is going on?! By the time they get around to launching any of their untouched major DC Comics franchises, superhero movies will be completely passe once more (if they aren't already).

I'm all for either the Ryan Reynolds Flash movie, or a new Flash series that kills off John Wesley Shipp's Flash in the two hour opener and continues with the Wally West Flash.

Warner, start cranking out those DC movies, 2 new franchise launches per year, so that in two to three years we can get started on a proper Justice League movie.

let the marvelization of DC's Movies begin...a few years ago I would have thought that was a good thing. But NOW...I fear we are going to get a bunch of FF style adaptations of our beloved characters...these are Icons, and they are being rushed through...not a good sign...The Flash is a light hearted character..but I don't think that means the movie has to be directed by a "comedic" director.

    by thecomedian

So now WB is already setting up solo franchises for the rest of the JL ready to roll out as soon as Miller's film is done. Sounds like they're laying the groundwork for a cinematic DC universe. So why the hell would they have two other separate pocket universes for Superman and Batman? If GL, Flash and WW are all getting their own movies then wouldn't the "JL only" Superman and Batman kinda be one-off chumps like Coy and Vance, the fake replacement Dukes of Hazzard that only lasted one season? That would be kinda assinine...right?... Of course, it would...."SHUT IT, COMEDIAN! I WANT BRUCE CAMPBELL TO PLAY A SMILEY HAPPY-GO-LUCKY BATMAN BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT I REMEMBER FROM SUPERFRIENDS OR POWERS BOOTH OR KURT RUSSELL TO PLAY A 60 YEAR OLD BATMAN IN A FRANCHISE WITH A BUNCH OF 20 SOMETHINGS BECAUSE THAT MAKES SOOOOO MUCH MORE SENSE." What is WB thinking? And DC? They hire a director to do a Flash spin-off from a JLA movie they haven't even started??? They hire a director known for COMEDY to helm the pic. (Uh..didn't they learn anything from Craptastic Four? What the hell is going on here? Clearly WB and DC don't give a shit about the fans or their properties. This string of news is just down right disappointing. Whatever happened to hiring the best directors to helm these movies.
