Quick bit on "Superman" ((animated)) and "Batman Beyond"

Published at:  Apr 18, 1999 5:24:14 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

Glen here...

...with a quick message from SPIDERMAN, who was kind enough to send in a quick report
from yesterday's WonderCon.

Here's what Spidey had to say:

Don't know if you knew this, but yesterday I saw Paul Dini and Bruce Timm
spoke at WonderCon in Oakland, CA.

They mentioned that there are only about six original episodes left of SUPERMAN: THE
ANIMATED SERIES. They also screened the upcoming Aquaman episode
for us. They've combined the old school look of the old Aquaman (YES! No
hooks!) with the modern Aquaman's attitude. He's voiced by Miguel Ferrer.
The description of the episode is below.

BATMAN BEYOND : They hinted at Ras Al Ghul's appearance in the show, and
even a possibility that a new Green Lantern could appear (since the ring
finds a new beared when needed).

WARNING: MINOR SPOILERS FOR UPCOMING SUPERMAN /
AQUAMAN EPISODE !!!

Lex Luthor is trying to perform undersea experiments that could harm the
underwater eco-structure, but Aquaman and him fellow Atlanteans attack with
laser cannons and sea creatures.

Aquaman sinks Luthor's ship! This is a
modern-day take-no-prisoners Aquaman!

    Aquaman VS Mr. Limpet

Well, that's the only way I'd go see an Incredible Mr. Limpdick remake.

    Gotta agree with the story...

    by bth

I was at Wondercon too yeaterday and heard Dini & Timm. Aquaman is a good combination of Silver Age appearance and modern personality...it works pretty well. Anywho, they talked about how only 5 more Supes remained to air (already known -- Aquaman, a Supergirl ep, "World's Finest part 4" -- as Dini referred to it -- with Bats and Ra's, and the 2-parter finale w/ Darkseid that closes off their Apokalips/Kirby octology) and that BB was gonna join the afternoon TNBSA lineup at least once a week starting next season. Other things brought up was the idea they're working on of having a BB World's Finest, with Supes showing up to help Terry, an idea brought up by a questioner (which Timm said he'd never thought of but was intrigued about) about bringing the future GL of Sector 2814 to BB Gotham. Dini also said that they wouldn't be brining many of the classic villains to BB, though he hinted that Ra's might make an appearance (he said that Etrigan, however, would ony appear in the comics). The BB direct-to-video film is not yet greenlighted, nor is the story even agreed on yet. They also mentioned how their ideas for JLA character one-shot films were turned down, as well as the idea of making Flash and GL eps to throw into the TNBSA mix. Finally, they brought up the idea that WB might throw some BB repeats into the prime time mix over the summer, though the show is staying on Saturday mornings to boost up the WB ratings...I trying to remember the rest of the info given (should've written it down), but I just wanna tell you all to tune into "Fish Story" a week from Saturday: its got Aquaman, Bibbo, and Jimmy Olsen learning the hard way how tough driving stick is...

    Let me clear my throat

    by eparabola

    okay, i am lost
    Superman is being cancelled?!?!!
why the hell haven't i heard anything about that???

also, what is going on with the batman cartoon, not the bb, but the one with the 3 ft robin and aneorexic catwoman. this is a strange batman, i mean, catwoman, the hell did they do to her? and batgirl, her face is about 5 times the size as nightwings

anyway, i am way off track
i'm still confused about the end of sup.

    The Darkseid episodes kicked ass!!

    to clear up a bit

    by bth

ok...what's happening to Batman and Superman isn't a cancellation per se...they'll still show the eps, but they'll be no production of new ones for about a year. The reason is that WB is demanding 50+ eps of BB for next year, and Dini and Timm can't do that AND TNBSA without sacrificing quality. Both yesterday expressed hopes to make more Bats and Supes eps, but just not next season (since BB is such an instant success, WB wants lots of eps to keep viewers interested...)

    Hold on

    by evil dead

Cancelled or no new episodes? Any way they both choices blow. Superman to me has always been a little better then Batman. Batman Beyond just ain't doing it for me. Terry McGinnis just isn't an interesting character. He's too cliched to get any good stories from. Batman needs more Nightwing. It seems like he does nothing in Gotham. I gotta agree with the last poster about Batgirl's face. I love Batgirl but, the poor woman has a spokesmodel smile glued on her face. Robin could use more work. I happen to enjoy the comic version better since they flesh out these characters. What about an animated Kingdom Come movie? Or better yet in order to get a JLA toon done do an animated movie based on The Death of Superman. What better way to get new viewers and a new cartoon going then establishing the greatest superheroes coming together in a movie event?

    ::Sigh::

    by bth

unfortunately, WB has passed on all the suggestions for spin-offs by Dini/Timm & co. (JLA, Supergirl, Lobo, Legion of Superheroes). There was no mention by them at Wondercon regarding Kingdom Come, but that was already basically turned away last year, both as something that WB didn't want to do (seen as too confusing for the common DC fan)and something that wouldn't be as good in animation as in Ross's painting. Anyway, WB would never greenlight a cartoon about the Death of Superman as long as they're still working on Superman Lives/Reborn...they wait till AFTER the cartoon is made otherwise before they start planning (like the inclusion of the throw lots of coins at Two-Face stuck into Batman Forever and the snow globe Nora Fries included into Batman & Robin). We'll all--unfortunatrly bigtime--have to last a year w/o any new classic Bats or Supes until there're enough BB's to let WB be content enough to let they circulate in repeats like TNBSA has been for the past while. So everyone just watch out for "Fish Story", "Unity", "The Demon Reborn" and "Legacy" Pt.1&2 (the five remaining Supes of this season...note that: SEASON). Keep watching TNBSA and let WB know that you agree with Dini and Timm that more Bats/Supes should be made ASAP

    both are on hiatus?

    by megatron

I could understand stopping one for a year to push production on Beyond but why both? Is it because WB wants so many Beyond episodes? Couldn't they just cut production by half, or even two thirds on Bats and Supes so that we could at least get SOME new episodes? I mean I like Beyond but it really doesn't compare to either Batman or Superman. I would much rather see new episodes of either of those two than Beyond. At least they stopped production because they were worried about quality. Thats better than getting a whole load of crap episodes of all three. Does anyone else think that it is funny that WB thinks Kingdom Come would be too smart for the regular DC fan? Aren't they (we) the ones who made it such a success in the first place? Unless they could figure out a way to animate Ross' style, or do it live action (niether of which I see happening) I would love to see an animated version in the NBSA style. I would also love to see a JLA, Lobo, Green Lantern, or Flash series, or at least some specials. Why not just turn the whole mess into a daily two hour series called The DC Heros or somethng. Done in the current animated style it would sure be a huge hit, and would definately help boost comic sales. WB must really be stupid to not think that it would be huge. Seems like the more executive brains you get together the less actual brain activety you get.

    Why?

    by bighit

How is it that people chosen to run TV networks are morons. BB is good, but why make more episodes of it at the expense of regular Batman and Superman. It sounds as if the problem is finding the people to do the episodes. I love the idea of a DC heroes show. One of my favorite Bat eps had to be the Jonah Hex episode. I liked how they used Batman just to get it through the door. I want to see more Falsh (has Flash ever appeared with Batman?) and GL, Aquaman should be good, Lobo was terrific, Wonder WOman would be great. I love the new Tim Drake Robin, and Nightwing, if only they would introduce the Huntress and have a little love triangle.

    What Batman Beyond needs...

    by taleiseniii

The best thing Dini/Timm could do with Batman Beyond right now would be two things. Flesh-out why Wayne turned into such a hermit (it could be coming, but i feel they need to speed it up!) and flesh out Terry's charcter further. His "girlfriend" seems to be just a person to intorduce Wayne in every ep. i meancome on how man times is she going to say "here comes Mr. Wayne." or something to that effect? i tired of that quickly. In defense of the show the enemies they've created are interesting and cool, Blight, Willy Watt, Inque (a sort of female Clayface rip off, but cool none the less), Shreek, they're all new and interesting. What BB needs now though is a really really good two parter, something along the lines of The Batman/Ra's Al Ghul story line. Possibly the revelation to Terry that Blight is Powers. I'm sure they're be some seriously cool fights there. btw, how many new eps have they're been? I've seen The pilot two parter/hour long ep, the Inque ep, The Willy Watt Ep, The Mr. Freeze ep, The Venom ep, were there any that i missed? an help would be appreciated!

    WBums

    by drath

You've missed several, but I don't know the titles real well yet. They did that episode with the Three mutants(Fantastic Four gone evil) and they did a by the book Kids-don't-do-drugs episode of BB just recently. BB is okay, but it's clear they are supposed to be targeting kiddies. The hero is a teenager and the Batman we know is just an old fart. Frankly, I think Bruce Wayne is now exactly the way Tim Drake sees him in the present-Batman show. Why is it that WB is such a cluster of crapsucking cowards! "Too confusing for DC readers?" Are their regular viagra doses having side effects? The Justice League cartoon from the eighties was popular--and it was utter crap animation and story-wise! The best thing in it was Darkseid and his Destroyers! So now that they have great animation, great writers and great great voice overs, won't they let these guys make JLA? Those sketches of Wonderwoman on the macaroni boxes are an unforgivable tease! Oh, and with everyone on Nightwing. He is totally underused. I don't mind Batgirl's face, and I like Tim Drake(an actually well written and voiced child in a cartoon--there's something new). But I don't see how WB will keep Timm, Dini, and the rest if they won't let them do ANY of the cool things!

    Superman:TAS is the coolest show

    by ottney

I hope they decide to renew in after these 6 episodes. I love that show. It's simple enough that even the youngest kid can enjoy it (my 4 year old nephew loves it), yet detailed enough even the hardcore fan (like me) can enjoy it.
I would like to see Conduit, Doomsday and the revelation that Clark is Superman to Lois. Maybe even a proposal. They could end it there, make the marriage a direct to video event, and release a new direct to video movie every year.

    No, No, NO!!!

    by dennis

Why are they pushing out the two classic shows to step up Batman Beyond? They do this everytime they come out with a new show, and it ticks me off! I never thought they should've messed with the original Batman format in the first place, though I like the darker tone of the stories, the animation suffers. I agree with other posters that basically Catwoman is no longer sexy, Robin is a joke, and Batgirl looks like a kwepie doll. What about Wonder Woman being on Superman and Batman? All three of those characters have a long history together. I think the Wonder Woman/Darkseid storyline is too good to pass up. It would make for some great drama and could have the Superman/Lois relationship cool for a while, and they could pick it up later so it won't loose its luster. Supes can be torn between his human love vs. someone who is more than human like himself. If anyone deserves a show, it's Wonder Woman. If WB doubts this, I advise them to check out Xena's ratings.

    SuperBat must continue!

    by golgo2099

"SuperBat" shouldn't end. As for Superman, We need to see Doomsday's story on it. (Come to think of it, The Death and Return of Superman could have been a movie in itself, but that Steel movie fucked up that possibility.) And that Darkseid mess hasn't been resolved! While we're at it, put the "Knightfall" storyline on Batman's show.

WONDER WOMAN should be next up.

    by vondoom

    They have already scrapped any
    JLA-type show, even though it
    would be insanely successful.
    Why are they avoiding success?
    How can the characters possibly
NOT work? Kids and adults both
STILL watch the stupid 'superfriends' episodes from the
    70's, and they suck.
Wonder Woman would be the best
one to do next, as she is the
last of the big three not yet
done, and could be tied in nicely
the way some of you have already
    mentioned with the ongoing series.
She has not had a pop cultural type moment since the Linda Carter
days, so people are ready for a
    really, really cool WW, which
this would be. Since they are
    already interested in pushing WW
to the screen in one way or another, what better way to get interest than to hook the kids?

    Lastly, the S:TAS 'Darkseid' arc
is the best animated series EVER
    done!!
    :^)

Too many shows. Not enough time.

    by ranger1138

WB is not against more classic Batman/Superman per say. Paul and Tim just can't do it all. WB wants at least 52 new eps for this fall season. That is a lot fro the anime company to do in a short time. I am afraid that the quality of the show will slip a bit due to this.
Another thing is that WB has lost a bit in the ratings and BB was a welcome influx to the demographic they were shooting for. BB characters were limited because at the time this was belived to be a sort of one shot deal. Why give away too much and hurt the other series if it did not work out. We already know what happens to Bane and Mr. Freeze so when we see them in TAS there is very little suspense. [ not that there really was a ton to begin with ]
If you want to make predictions try this. Why is Tim Drake's costume still the size of a child? Every time I see the cases I wonder if he died in action. Maybe that started Bruce down the dark road. Maybe he shut everyone out after Alfred passed beyond the rim?
As for spin offs... WB has shot them down left and right because they want to have a variety of shows for kids. I ma more displeased at the fact that they won't let the team do nay Vampire like stories. Not even fangs. Cinematic Fantastique had a wonderful story about FOX stoping any storylines like that. They also told you what had to be cut for the censors. WB has pretty much the same ideals as FOX on such things. Hopefully, the recent violence in our nation's schools will not draw even more kneejerk censoring of the show.

    Farewell, not goodbye

    by the great one

It's too bad that Dini & Timm will be unable to continue to give us more Superman and Batman adventures for a while, but as long as they promise to come back and do some more at a later date, I'm not too worried. I still have the Batman Animated art book to look at. (Damn, that thing's gorgeous!!) I'll look forward to the newer episodes of Batman Beyond. This show has become a worthy sucessor in its own right, and I'll be curious to see how Bruce and Terry's relationship continues to play out. I'm also curious to see the fate of some of the other characters (i.e Tim & Dick) and whether any of the villains reformed, hung around, or met...their end.
(Speculation: I think Joker's dead because if he were alive, he would have killed that motorcycle gang already. His style's not funny if it's imitated all the time ^_^. Also, I heard a rumor that the President in this time is...Harley Quinn?)

    the reason is...

    by flyte

The reason is, which I think anyway, why they are temporarily halting production on any new Batman and Superman series is because they are getting oversaturated. Not for us avid cartoon and comic book fans but fot the average watcher and reader. Look what happened with that last piece of Joel Schumacher crap Batman, everyone was sick of it. The new Superman movie will be coming out so they want to keep the attention on that. Besides, the jackass powers that be in Hollywood would never want the less expensive, yet superior, with a loyal fanbase cartoon do better than their 100 million dollar waste of movie productions. Remember what they did with Batman: Subzero. It went direct to video. The reason is that it had gotten suck rave reviews by the press it made the live action movie look like garbage. And what better way to steal the thunder of the Supes cartoon than to halt new episodes for the coming of the live action movie. Who are these buttmunchers in Hollywood that make these retarded decisions. Batman Beyond is a cool cartoon but it is to attract new viewers not familiar with the Superman and Batman mythos. New cartoon equal new new audience. Can anyone spell instant cashola in advertising bucks. If I had a say in the matter of what would come about with the new cartoons I would like to see more Green Lantern, the silver age Green lantern, Hal Jordan. He was and still is the ultimate green lanter. But I guess Kyle Rayner is the next best possible choice since he will appeal better to the teenage age group. More Flash would be great, maybe even introduce Captain Atom and the Martian Manhunter into the fold. Now, that would be interesting. For the Batman cartoon, let's see some Azrael and a better version of Bane. He gets his ass kicked too quickly. I know I went on a tangent but I know that is how a lot of other comic book and cartoon buffs think. Let me know what you guys think of this.

    One year, but no longer...

    by emperor fred

Yeah, well I wasn't too upset about Batman/Superman going on hiatus and Batman Beyond being given a full order. I think Beyond is pretty cool! The futuristic setting and the cool soundtrack rock! Not that I want to see Batman and Superman go, but the WB will still be running them weekdays and Saturdays, and I think the possibilities are still pretty good for B&S to return the next season. I like to think that they're just concentrating their talent on BB right now.

Even then, I'm still concerned that the producers can keep up the level of quality on this crapload of BB episodes that they had on the first 13. Even Superman, I found, was better during its first 13 episodes than when they started showing it in weekday slots. Not that it wasn't still good, but boy were there some stinky episodes.

So, anyway, go ahead and concentrate on Beyond, just make sure it stays cool, and promise us there'll be more Batman and Superman episodes in the year 2000.

Personally, what I'm a little more concerned about is how Warner Bros. pulled the plug on the latest Batman direct-to-video in favour of a Beyond DTV. I mean, come on, if we're not going to get more episodes, wouldn't at least one cool movie keep our interest level up? THAT news is a little disturbing...

Interesting that the things they suggested about Tim Drake and the Joker of the DCAU animated continuity came to pass. All except for the bit about Harley Quinn being President. But aside from that, they were just about on the money with the other two.
