Ease On Down, Ease On Down FURY ROAD!! MAD MAX 4 Appears To Be Revving Up Again!!

Published at:  Oct 26, 2007 1:09:30 PM CDT

Merrick here...

Moviehole says production offices for MAD MAX: FURY ROAD (love that title) have been reopened, and The Powers That Be are said to be scoping out effects houses as a pre-cursor to production.

You can read the original report HERE.

Moviehole says Mel Gibson will not be back. We've previously heard suggestions that the part of Max Rockatansky would be summarily recast so that the franchise can continue (a la James Bond).

The obvious question here is: how does this impact the JUSTICE LEAGUE movie George Miller is supposed to be directing, if at all? For my money, I'd rather see (even a Gibson-less) MAX over JL 90210...but maybe that's just me.

    JL90210 is already a flop

    by masterbateman

I would also rather see Mad Max 4, so long as Miller is directing. Justice League has b-o-m-b written all over it. It's bound to go over budget (what IS the budget anyway?) and do some of you honestly believe that it's going to turn out... good? Don't fool yourselves. The suits aren't making a "Justice League" movie to realize your every fanboy wet dreams. They are making the movie for one reason... TO SELL TOYS. There's two paths that the film could take. They'll make a PG-rated, watered down, live action cartoon that little kids will flock to. So, basically, everyone here will hate it, but it'll be a hit. Or, they will make a standard PG-13 action flick, that will probably not make a big profit, so they'll be sure to jam-pack it with product placement and merchandising opportunities. If this doesn't sound like the most over-hyped toy commercial since Space Jam, then you seriously need a reality check.

We need hardcore wasteland barbarians, we need MFP Ford Falcons and most importantly we need a proper hairy arsed Aussie for Max. No poncy Yank Surf rats, Eric Banna would own that role. STOKED! By all means do a bit of digital background painting if you must (although the outback does pretty well as a post-apocalyptic world all by itself), but lets have none of the cgi car nonsense please. Hopefully George will realise that a lot of the fun of those films is looking at proper, in-camera stunts and thinking "Wow, someone actually DID that!".

Actually I quite like the Mad Max movies, well 1 and 2 anyway. The one with Tina Turner was shite. There has to be the rawness about them and I feel a first time director would be most suited. Keep the budget decent but low and find people who are good and passionate about the subject matter. You don't need Mel for this role just as much as you don't need Sean Connery for Bond. They're both too old.

My only problem is that they could never find a stunt team in this health and safety obsessed day and age to do half the crazy stuff that those Aussie boys did for Mad Max 2's final car chase. Miller and Mel

    by the llama

I'm not sure I buy that Miller would go ahead with this without involvement at some level of Gibson. Nor do I think Miller would simply recast the role so that a reboot could occur--if he was in it just for the money, he could have whored the Mad Max franchise a long time ago. The re-opening of offices and scouting for effects houses indicates a renewed interest, but it is no guarantee.

    by kevred

Old Mel would be just fine, and it's hard to imagine they won't muck it up with CGI, which would be a travesty.
Mad Max without Gibson is Waterworld + Fast & The Furious. The first two Max films were made in relative innocence, with small moneymaking potential and bare-bones effects capabilities compared to now, and that allowed the amazing, unique personality of those flicks to shine through. What made those movies was grit, dirt, roaring engines, metal, asphalt, and character. What made those movies was the look in Gibson's eyes, and NO ONE else can nail that, and without that, there is no Max.We saw the "safe" Max in Thunderdome, and it was ridiculous. With Hollywood's current stretch of play-it-safe, protect-the-money anxiety, how can we expect them to do it justice? They don't want to do it justice, they want to make a quick buck.It seems like a lot of us here want Hollywood to "go back" at step in a sense, to abandon the slick, cheap, computer-driven formula for making a modern big movie. I, for one, officially stopped being impressed with CGI through a combination of the Star Wars prequels and Van Helsing. The latter, especially, was a film I thought would have been 1,000 times better with no CGI at all. These types of films just don't feel real at all. Does anyone under 25 years old agree? Does anyone in the right demographic even care at all? Ah well. Such is life.

Which is worse? A new actor who is cast correctly replacing Gibson as Max or a 52 year old Gibson doing things that a 32 year old would have trouble doing? Depending on what the overall script is, the former may actually make it a better movie than the later.
If they made this movie ten years ago, I think Gibson would have been the better way to go. But I think he is too old.
Besides, I would rather have a new Max than have Tina Turner as the main bad guy in a Mad Max movie.

I totally understand where folks are coming from with the wish to see Gibson done the leather coat once more, but have you seen him lately?

Times, they be a changin' and the one guy I can see stepping into Max's shoes is Gerard Butler.

Still, it would be great if Mel could get an acid wash on his face and pump in some Botox, but I doubt it'll happen.

I can't help but think this might be Miller's way of getting out of JLA. Can't imagine how any director can helm two mega-budget productions con-currently especially when they're fighting tooth and nail to avoid the SAG/DGA Strike this coming June.

Plus, now we're getting news that WB is actively hearing out writers for the SUPERMAN sequel. Could something be up?

    I told you so

    by vern

As soon as he was doing the comic strip movie I said this meant Mad Max 4 would get going again. And I was right. So you should also believe me that it's time to drop all your silly comic nerd bullshit, just quit fucking whining and wait for him to make the movie. You don't even have a cast yet, you just have unsubstantiated rumors of who allegedly AUDITIONED, and already you feel you have looked deep into the movie's eyes and seen its soul. Well, that's bullshit. There is only one thing we know about this movie for sure and it's the one piece of information we need: GEORGE FUCKING MILLER is directing it. I am rubbing my eyes trying to figure out if I really saw a talkbacker above saying they should've hired some nerds who made an amateur super hero movie on youtube. OVER GEORGE FUCKING MILLER. Do you people watch movies? Do you know what they are? Are you trying to give me a fucking heart attack?Today I am prepared to predict that after seeing George Miller's Justice Team you will be so blown over by its power and majesty that you will immediately go home and burn all your Superman capes. Not out of hatred but out of enlightenment. If you love something set it free. And you will be free.
As for Mad Max, he's been saying for years that it wouldn't be Mel Gibson so don't be surprised. It was gonna be Mel when they started production but then when the Iraq war stopped it they said that was pretty much the last window where he'd be willing to do it. Not only does he hate Jews now, he's more interested in directing than acting. When was the last time you saw him in a movie?
Don't get me wrong, I'd rather see Mel back, but I think as long as it's George Miller you can do it without him. If you watch those movies, Max is kind of a blank, he's just a badass archetype. It is not one of the more challenging acting roles for Gibson. And it shouldn't be. If they cast well they can do it. I like the Bana suggestion but I think the best idea is some bad motherfucker you've never seen in a movie before. But yeah, stick with Australian.
The James Bond comparison is a good one. Personally I like Daniel Craig better than any of the other James Bonds. I like Christian Bale better than the other Batmen. I think you can do a good new interpretation of a classic character. Unless it's John McClane. You got me on that one.

I don't know why any of you are getting in a huff about "you gotta get Gibson back!" because he's not interested. Not. Interested. The parallels to Snake Plissken are wrong because Kurt Russell WANTS to play Snake again. Is. Interested. So on the one hand you have an actor who does NOT want to play his classic character. On the other, you have an actor who DOES want to play his classic character. So it's kind of a forgone conclusion at this point. A new Max movie will 99% (because you always have to leave a possibility) not be featuring Mel Gibson. And no, leave that douchebag Gerard "I was the Phantom of the Opera" Butler out of this. Bad enough he's taking over Snake. Though in his desperate need to be thought of as "macho", it wouldn't surprise me to see Butler lobby for the Max role. Because of his look in Chopper, I'd almost rather see Bana play the lead villain in a new Max flick, as opposed to Max himself.

    Vern, about the "Grayson" clip

    by masterbateman

Actually I would love "some nerds who made an amateur super hero movie on youtube" direct Justice League as the director of "Happy Feet." And not because I'm dissing George Miller, but because I happen to think that what Hollywood needs is to start taking risks. What happened to the Hollywood that hired David Lynch to direct "Dune?" Or Brian DePalma for "Mission:Impossible." Get Cronenberg to direct Justice League and I'd be interested. Why? Because it would be different and I'm sick of seeing the same old fucking homogenized bullshit over and over again. Stop settling for this garbage. Hollywood is so creatively bankrupt that it's frightening. I'm horrified that in a few years every single movie that is released will suck ass. Because it's getting pretty damned close to that. Name the five best movies you've seen this year. Yeah that's what I thought... THEY ALL SUCK!

The MAD MAX series is not like the Bond series – there have only been three films, all starred Mel Gibson, and the last one came out years ago. How is that like the Bond series? Of course it's POSSIBLE to keep the character going by casting another actor in the part, but would any of us want to see an INDIANA JONES film starring someone else as Indiana Jones? The answer is no, none of us want that. Look, Vern is right in saying that a lot of us are being typical geek jerks, judging all these films long before we have any real reason to judge them, but I just don't like the idea of someone else playing Max, it'd be like if George Lucas decided to cast someone else as Han Solo in RETURN OF THE JEDI instead of Harrison Ford, it just wouldn't have been the same.

Like it or not, the studios are businesses, and if I were a studio, no way would I spend 200 million (or whatever it is) on the amateur film nerds! That's nuts to expect them to do that! George Miller is inspired when you look at that price range - he is most definitely not Michael Bay, Rob Cohen, McG, or any other number of MTV-style action directors. You may or may not know that at one point, David Slade, who directed 30 Days of Night, was strongly considered as director of JL, but when the budget surpassed 100 million, they decided to go with George Miller - thank God they did, because 30DON was AWFUL. Style over substance. You can't accuse Miller of that.

I don't really care about a bunch of new Max films. I just want George Miller's "MAD MAX Part IV - FURY ROAD". I would really, really love to see Mel as Max in it, but if that can't happen, so be it. Like i said, I think a George Miller directed Mad Max film called FURY ROAD is bound to kick major ass. With or without Gibson, and to the guy who said Apocalypto was the shit, I fully agree.
By the way, Gibson loved working for and is a big admirer of George Miller.
Here's some Gibson quotes from an IGN interview regarding the Max series from december '06.

IGN: "Well, is there a film or film series you would like to revisit for a sequel or follow-up?"

Gibson: "Well, I always felt those Road Warrior movies were pretty cool, like they were in-the-gutter comic book stuff. It was like really pretty exciting stuff. I don't know. We began to mount one; it was a terrific idea that George Miller had and, boy, it was prohibitively expensive. But maybe there will be a time and place where that won't be the case. I don't know"

Yes, of course having Mel back as Max would completely rule, but I'd rather see Miller's new Max film with another bloke called Max Rockatansky, as no Max 4 at all. Damn !

    Interesting

    by dilated_in_disbelief

I know the movie industry is in a real interesting state right now, and creatively it seems very uninspired, but how retro are you people? I understand that older movies are better than most new ones, but how stuck in the past are you? Everyone has given up on Hollywood to try and do something new (which is completely understandable as people have felt that way for many many years), and instead hope that the studios can revamp something that did work in the past, but that's just too nostalgic for me. And you're all acting rather conservative when it comes to new possibilities like different actors or trying new types of effects. George Miller directing a new movie sounds great, even though I really do not care to see a superhero flick, but the idea of a new Mad Max just doesn't sound that cool to me. It's from another place and another time. I'd rather see something new, yet I only see a huge separation with the audiences and the studios. Everybody hates the choices the studios make, yet the studios keep on doing it and they make their money back, unless I'm completely wrong. Regardless of how good a new mad max will be, we all know that nobody will really associate it with the older trilogy. that's just the way it is. It will never satisfy you uber nerds! Nothing ever will haha. It seems like the only people directing movies these days are nerds who want to make some letter to a time when they couldn't see the movies they would have liked to see in the theater. Maybe I won't have a choice but to embrace what the studios will be coming out with in the future, but as you can see I'm much less enthusiastic about these sequels and remakes and comic book adaptations or retro "back in the day" flicks, as I'm sure everyone else is, but whatever. I definitely don't expect Mel to be on board for this, and finding someone new doesn't bother me, as long as they have those eyes.

    Why is everyone so shocked....

    by boromir187

....that Gibson isn't apart of this? After production fell apart before filming a few years back, Gibson stated that he had given up on it and would not be returning if the film ever got off the ground again. Ever since then, George Miller has constantly stated that he would be recasting the role and keeping Max closer to the age he was in the others. Hell, last year he stated that he has some ideas for two additional ones beyond Fury Road if it does well. Miller has his heart set on a new gritty low-budget Mad Max trilogy of sequels and between the success of Happy Feet and the potential successes of JLA & Happy Feet 2.............I'd say there's a chance that he'll get his way. Anyway, I suspect Miller will cast an unknown in the role of Max Rockatansky and not a current star in order to keep the costs down (and to get them to sign a potential three-film contract).

Sounds good to me man, I didn't know Miller was thinking about a brandnew trilogy. Not so sure about these new films being low-budget affairs, see Gibson's remarks in my previous post for that. Not that i care or want those follow-ups to be very expensive affairs, mind you. I've forgotten the exact amount Mel was about to pocket by returning for Max 4 before the movie fell through, but it was an enormous amount, something like 30 million + .

i'm glad MM4 is back in pre-production (again) and even posted on wanting MM4 a few days in the rambo tb. but i'd rather see a respectable finish to Mel's Max story with Mel, capping off the first two classics with such a Disney movie was a tragedy, i want the fourth to have some closure for Mel's blighted journey. are people seriously considering some younger guy? i've even heard of a younger Mel lookalike being in the role. that is some ghastly stuff. this too-old thing is nonsense, while Ford is in his 60s doing Indiana Jones, an even more physical character, Mel is 51. get Mel or get no one. i'm glad Miller is doing this since he had practically nothing to do with the third one. all that high octane mayhem of the cars, and the pop-pageantry of the road barbarian battles was all him.

To all the guys talking about this film flopping and doing bad at the box-office, were you guys asked to do personal financial investments in the film? Do you work for the studio that's gonna have to put down the cash to make the movie ? If none of you get excited that George Miller himself who helmed the original 3 Max films and could probably choose to direct any film he wants but really wants to film a new Mad Max film called Fury Road, then I don't know what to say. How the fuck can you say this movie is gonna blow ?

    THUNDERDOME is the pig shit

    by vern

I want you guys to go back and watch that shit again, then I want you to come back here and apologize for parroting that bullshit line all these years just because people didn't get the retread they wanted back then.
It may be the third best of the series but that doesn't stop it being brilliant. I mean from the opening shot on it's a work of genius. Miller is the guy who had the balls to make two of the greatest car chase movies of all time and then, in part 3, have the driver get knocked off his vehicle in the opening shot and become a pedestrian! Then he becomes more of a Clint Eastwood character as he tries to get his car back, but ultimately there is another crazy ass car chase at the end involving a high speed train and an airplane. Also I like the Leone style gimmick of having Bruce Spence return but as a different character than in Road Warrior.
The scene of Max walking into Barter Town in my opinion is the best detailed fantasy world type business outside of Star Wars. That seems like a real place you're walking through.
Just because there's some kids in there you're really gonna shit on this movie? I even like that part of the movie, those kids with their fucked up language and their weird notions of the world based on misunderstandings of garbage they found after the apocalypse. They're not as cool as the feral child but they're not the unwatchable Jar Jars you people make them out to be.
And of course everybody knows Thunderdome and Master Blaster are the shit. You can't fight me on that one.

    by jaws wayne

You can say that again. I just Googled around and found some interesting info. In the FURY ROAD version that was ready to shoot in 2003 Robert Downey Jr. was gonna play alongside Gibbo. Here's some other info I found which could shed some light on where FURY ROAD will be heading visually ..."Australian writer/director George Miller promised fans yet another sequel, but said that he was waiting for CGI effects, like he used in the Babe films, to reach the point where he could realize his vision " To me that doesn't sound like this is gonna be some small intimate movie. Like Gibson already stated, Fury Road was gonna be big in scope.

    by allfather starr

But I watched Thunderdome again about three weeks ago. It was bollocks. Sure, the beginning showed promise, and the end was alright, but pretty much a complete rehash of the end of Two. Like when you watched T3 and thought "You know, I feel like I've seen this movie before." But the middle part of Thunderdome, bullshit mate, there's no way you can defend that. It's fucking cringeworthy. Those kids, my god, I wanted to smash my tv in. They were so annoying, so ridiculously stupid. The idea may have seemed good on paper, but in execution it was a total balls up. Really bad acting, just terrible. Grrr, just thinking about them pisses me off. I believe they truly are the Jar Jars of the Mad Max franchise, can you point to any part of the series that is worse than they are? Nope. To paraphrase Tim Bisley "those kids make Jar Jar look like fucking Shaft!"

Just on Ain't It Cool talkbacks there've probaly been tens of thousands of words spent on petty bullshit that almost nobody will ever think about when they see the final product. It's like the "Daniel Craig is too ugly to play James Bond" movement. Nobody takes the time to think, holy shit, they got George Miller! So they are making a film on that concept. For me thats a pass- no matter how good it is, cause I don't like comic book hero films. by lornsorrow

IN MY OPINION: If they cant get Mel Gibson, that's fine I guess. I don't know that he could pull it off anymore. THOMAS JANE however, would be fucking awesome!! His work in The Punisher was good, even if the film itself could have been somewhat better, but after seeing him in Stander, HOLY CRAP!!! This guy IS THEE MAN! In my book Kurt Russell is one of the best badass's ever and still has a lot of life in him (just look at people like Charles Bronson and Lee Marvin and how long those guys lasted as true bad ass dudes!). Thomas Jane is carrying on the tradition. He is the top young bad ass of our time! He's got a lot of depth to him and I think capable of a hell of a lot given the opportunity. Hope to see a lot more of him in the future. Hope this "The Mutant Chronicles" thing he is coming out in 2008 with Ron Perlman and John Malkovich is good. I don't know. It could be great (or it could really suck) but we shall see. I'm sure the actors will do a decent job, but the story/material better be good.

I could care less about his politics and alleged viewpoints. I want to see MEL GIBSON back as Max. Even if they nab some excellent casting (I'd go with Clive Owen myself), and with Miller returning to the director's chair, it's going to be cool, but it's not going to be as good as it could be. Sorry.

With Rambo, Rocky, Indy, Die Hard, etc. coming back, MAD MAX: FURY ROAD would be the frickin' cherry on top of the sundae! How badass would it be to see Gibson in that role again.

I respect him for wanting to move on to more personal projects, but I wouldn't count Mel out of this project just yet. COME ON MEL!!!

    There's a rumour going around...

    by sledge hammer

...that getting a fourth Max film was part of Miller's contract negotiations for taking on Justice League, and if that's true then that's what his next film would likely be as soon as he's done with JL. If that's true or not, or if that's already been mentioned in this long assed talkback I don't know, but that was the scuttlebut a little while ago. And so to now see things moving ahead with MM4 again, well, maybe it is true after all. Plus which, the film already has a script, so it'd also be a tentpole film that would avoid the writers strike fallout as well, which is another thing in it's favour. Wait and see what happens I guess. Still, a Max film without Mad Mel is still a tough sell, regardless of how much I dig Miller's work.

Yes, now that you mention it, I think it would be very good for Mel to reprise this character. If he could have a good script and really put his legendary talent and guts into the role, it would probably be very good for his career. He's done some films that I have liked recently, I thought he was great in The Patriot, and he did a fine job in We Were Soldiers, but seeing him as Max once again would be really good. Especially as how I'm VERY unhappy with the fact that he is going to be coming soon in "Under and Alone" playing William Queen. Yeah, I read Queen's book, and though what he did may have been necessary to stop the particular group he was dealing with, it pisses on bikers way too damn much. Not all 1 percenters are scum and murderers. And as for the whole drunken racist outburst stuff of Mel, shit, THE DUDE WAS SKUNK DRUNK! There may be no excuse to be so drunk, but there is no excuse for taking the mouthing off of a drunk guy so seriously either. Shit, grow up. Maybe he reads too much conspiracy crap or something. Who the hell knows, it may not be very racist motivated, it could just be some drunk ravings of a drunk dude. Not everything a drunk person says reveals some inner secret hidden truth or meaning! If that was the case, we should just let the drunks rule the world (oh, excuse me, they sort of are doing that already aren't they!) heh heh heh...

A different role? He was the Gyro-Captain. Yes he lead the people to the ocean at the end of The Road Warrior, but who said that after 10 years, he didnt go back to the wasteland? He did have a son, maybe from the little hottie that he hooked up with at the end, she died and he took his kid and returned. Max pointed him out and said "you" like he knew him well. This is called a Cargo Cult.

This really happened after World War 2.

All of the natives on South Pacific islands saw things they didn't understand and found objects they couldn't explain that were left behind by American and Japanese soldiers fighting in the Pacific.

They often worshiped these objects, situations, or even specific people (American soliders) as gods.

Web search "Cargo Cult" and go to town.

    recasting

    by tikibars

For those of you who think that Mel can't be recast: Connery did SIX movies as Bond, and then quit (coming back for a seventh, and then that Never Say Never deal a decade later). When Connery split, everyone thought Bond was OVER. And yet there was Moore, Brosnan, and the rest. Here were are almost four decades after Sean bailed, and Bond is going strong. And he did a total of EIGHT Bonds, not three (like Mel in Mad Max). They'll recast the movie if they smell money. Oh, and also for you Thunderdome defenders: yes, it had some good PARTS, but fucking hell, Tina Turner? Bleh. Sinks the flick right there.

    We don't "need" Mel...

    by proton45

Let's face it the success of the "Mad Max" franchise is do to George

Miller's vision of a "post-apocalyptic" world inhabited by colorful Australian

"nut-cases" driving around really fast looking for more "go-juice"(by any

means necessary) so that they can keep on driving around really fast doing

whatever (sick and twisted thing) they want. The success of the "Mad Max

movies" does not rest on the shoulders of Mel Gibson's acting...(Yes) It may

be true that we have become accustomed to seeing Mel Gibson as

"Max"...and (yes) it could be true that we have come to expect Mel Gibson in

a "Mad Max" movie, but we do not NEED Mel Gibson for a good "Mad Max movie". Lets face it, the character of Max is a wooden one dimensional burn-out in leather, and Mr Gibson doesn't bring a lot more to the character...The James Bond movies would not have been a sucsess without Connery's

portail of Bond. And I don't think "Indiana Jones" would have been as

endearing to us if he had been played by another actor (Mr Ford brought a vulnerable likability to the character of "INDY"). But the Mad Max movies could have been just as popular (example) if he had been played by

Bruce Willis (Willis might have even brought some irony to the role). I'm not

saying I don't like Gibson as Max, but I don't think we should right-off a "new"

Mad Max movie just because Gibson isn't in it. With George Miller at the

helm their is a whole lot MORE potential for a new "Mad Max" movie then

their is in the JLA movie...The JLA project should be a TV series. Their is just

too much material to cover in 2 hours for us to get anything other then (at

best) a passable movie. With movie's based on "old" comic book's we expect a little bit of back story, a fresh vision, our favorite characters, and some "kick-ass" action...their are too many "hero's" in a JLA story to do justics to every hero. So what we get is a "glossed over" backstory that jumps right into the action and dosn't explore any hero in a new or meaningful way...At best we could hope for a good villian and "cookie-cutter" hero's doing exactly what we expect them to do...This subject matter whould be much better served up in a TV series where they could explore each of the "super hero's" story and their relation ships with each other.

The problem with comparing Mad Max to Bond

    by thenorthlander

is that Bond is a huge mainstream franchise designed to contain something for everyone. Even Indiana Jones or Star Wars doesn't have as broad appeal as Bond does. Plus, Bond also has its share of followers who reads the books.

Mad Max has three post-apocalypticly (very unmainstream) themed movies made 20-30 years ago.
    That's it.

Mel is in his early 50s. Stallone is 60 doing Rambo again. Harrison Ford is 65, yet playing a character a lot more physical than Mad "leg brace/behind-the-wheel" Max. Just do this already Mel.

That's what THE WILD BUNCH was all about. It's Mel or no-one for me. I want to see how much more humanity the world has kicked out of old Max and I want to see him take a last grasp at redemption whether it succeeds or fails. Let him die trying so we can watch him pass into myth. That's good shit. Explore it.

except Mel Gibson himself. I agree with proton45. George Miller is Mad Max more than Mel Gibson is. But I also agree that they should make a serious push to try to get Gibson to do it before they recast. Give him some Three Stooges DVDs or something to butter him up.
As for Bruce Spence in Thunderdome, I believe he is a different character, but they also want to play with the audience by making him similar. Max says "You..." as if he recognizes him as the gyro pilot, but then you think no, he recognizes him as the guy who knocked him off his camel and stole his truck. And he's saying "You" not as in "It's you, the gyro pilot" but as in "You there, you have a plane, we need it."
Also, Uncapie, I didn't say THUNDERDOME is pig shit, I said it's *the* pig shit, which is a new Barter Town-inspired slang term that means it's good.

I think you're about the only bod out there that can withstand repeated viewing of it, most fans just get pissed off and depressed by a wasted opportunity that was totally out of character with it's predecessors. A Mad Max lite for gelled up 80's bemulleted dads who like to listen to Aha. I remember how fucking dissappointed I felt after seeing it back when it came out, I'd been expecting another viscerally charged Road Warrior neo-western and was left feeling short-changed by a pedestrian and tedious failure.
All the singular aspects you praise it for, (with the exception of the Cinematography and that final action sequence) are for me the reason it was such a dire addition to the series. Miller compromised the rating and summarily cut off the balls that were vital to a Max film. It was Disney Max with a dulled edge and suffering from langorous pacing and a boring plot that made the fatal mistake of incorporating a bunch of unconvincing designer ferral brats whingeing on about a naff prophecy. I did'nt give a flying fart about Max's redemption in context of that set-up, it failed! The film was bereft of any sense of menace, and the raw brutality characterised by the likes of the Toe-cutter and Humongus was sadly missing; the heavies in TD in comparison were a bunch of luke-warm leather joy-boy-mongos led by a demure and frankly dull Tina Turner. These were weak characters halfway between civi survivors and nomad trash. I wanted to revisit the harsher world of established in previous films, instead we got bogged down in Bartertown, a dead-end quagmire in every sense. The only interest there being the titular Thunderdome arena, which in concept could have been an opportunity for a truly nasty set-piece, instead we got a poorly executed and bouncingly camp fight - too far removed from the superior and raw action of Mad Max 2 to let it slide, Miller had raised the bar high to throw such a lousy curve. No, I can't watch this film, the series still rests at Mad Max 2/Road Warrior in my continuum. OH...and BANA FOR MAX!

It was quoted as being 'prohibitively expensive' but exciting and original to get both Miller and Gibson Stoked. I think the CG houses being approached will predominantly be dealing with environment work, that is if it's as audaciously as big in scope as originally mooted. Anyone familiar with McCarthy's body of work will know he's a brilliant madman in the graphic tradition of Moebius/Jorowdowsky. I wonder if his draft is still the basis for the nex Max film?

It would have just been a rehash to keep his character the bitter selfish character he was at the beginning of tRW. The difference between Mad Max and James Bond...

    by sledge hammer

...is that James Bond was already an established character before Sean Connery played him, whereas Mad Max didn't exist before Mel Gibson played him. That's why you can recast Bond, because Sean Connery merely played James Bond, whereas Mel Gibson is Mad Max and Mad Max is Mel Gibson in the mind of everyone who knows or has heard of that character. Therefore any recasting is a far, far, far harder and more dangerous proposition, one that'd be almost impossible to pull off with any degree of success. Personally I still think they could get Gibson if Miller wants him, just as long as the money men are willing to pony up the big money to get him to sign on. After all even now Gibson still gives props to Miller and the original Mad Max for giving him a career, and was willing to sign on to play Max one last time just before this project was cancelled the last time (right on the verge of starting shooting). It's not impossible, so here's hoping that if this really does happen they'll make all efforts (and pay whatever it takes) to get Gibson on board.

...IS Mel Gibson. And no BTD wasn't total shite but it was a much liter version of the true MM (there is an 'ewok' quality to the fat pudgy kids part). Within the context of a MM film, changing the actor would be a distraction. Miller certainly has to do it to give it justice but I'd be ambivalent towards a non-Mel Mad Max movie at this point...and I'm obviously not alone in that thinking.

I just rewatched the Max trilogy earlier this year, and it blew me away again. Mad Max and Thunderdome are both great (deal with it, Thunderdome haters), and The Road Warrior is the greatest action movie ever made. When I read that a fourth movie was possible, I was psyched. But without Mel, I'm not sure I'd go see it. I respect that you consider Max along the lines of Bond and Batman, Vern--but I don't. Those were already established characters before anyone played them in a movie. In that case, the character is more important than the actor. But Mel is Max. I don't want to see some flavor of the week actor (Gerard Butler, I'm looking at you) take his place. I know Miller doesn't misstep much, but I think this one would be a mistake.

    by jaws wayne

Of course that's a much better movie than it's been given credit for. Make sure (like all the Max films) to watch it in it's original aspect ratio though, no other movies I know suffered as terrible from the pan & scan process as the 3 Max films. I always wondered about the script of Max 4 that made Miller (and Gibson) want to make another one after all these years. I know next to nothing about comic book artists but Killakane, an hour ago I typed in Brendan McCarthy's name, witnessed a bunch of drawings from the man's comic books and can say that I'm know officially double-psyched about George Miller's FURY ROAD. I expect that movie to become a major extravaganza and I don't think anybody should worry about it becoming a family-fun movie.
Make sure to watch some drawings from McCarthy, here's a link to the "comic work" page on his website. http://tinyurl.com/2jppmc Also check out the interview with McCarthy in which he gets asked about his work with Miller on FURY ROAD. Here's some quotes from that.." I was a huge Mad Max fan. For a lot of people it was Star Wars, for me it was Road Warrior. To be trusted with this character and to take him where he needs to go – I took it very seriously. The last thing I want to see is a shitty Mad Max film. Thunderdome - the first half wasn’t so bad but it fell apart in the second half with all the kids. This was an attempt to do a serious Mad Max Film. It’s called Mad Max: Fury Road, but it could be called Mad Max: Unforgiven or Mad Max: Apocalypse Now. It’s got that kind of feel to it. It’s a serious piece of work that’s in a genre mode" If you want to read more, here's a link to the full interview. http://tinyurl.com/yqle29 And oh, also take a look at this drawing from the guy. Bring on FURY ROAD.

    by prossor

what the shit? Sure it was George Miller's vision of Mad Max, in fact even more so since he didn't have anything to do with the third except for the train actin, the whole concept and car culture of the first two movies was pure Miller, the third was Byron Kennedy's idea with that crack of the earth/children playground nonsense, so i agree Miller is even more responsible for the great Maxes. Secondly Mad Max is not James Bond like said many times here, there were no books of the character beforehand, the whole character was sculpted and born onscreen, just like Han Solo and Indiana Jones and John McClane, you don't mass with the re-casting in this sense. As for his age he needs to stop his lovable self-deprication in this sense and realize he's not too old. I like Laserbrain's idea of the Wild Bunch analogy of MM4, and it ties in nicely since the first two movies were already post-apocalyptic westerns, and going back to that same mindset is the way to go, knowing Miller is back in the reigns for the first time since Road Warrior, it looks to be some more of it and not the Disney nonsense. And this talk of Beyond Thunderome, i actually defended this movie before i actually saw it. The kid concept wasn't as bad i thought, i'd give it a chance since i wasn't that bothered by Ewoks in ROTJ, but when i actually saw this movie, it was good as something crossed with Dune/Alien from LA (for the msties here)/Willow or some shit and i kept thinking "this is the same storyline of Mad Max and Road Warrior?" That whole Thunderdome battle concept was hilarious on the ropes, heck even the music was this goofy shit. It makes the sounds of the first to Maxes appear like classical compositions in comparison.

    by killakane

I think my biggest bug bear with the whole Thunderdome salvation of the ferral kiddies was that it just did'nt play particularly well, lame dialogue, bad acting and too contrived IMHO. I did'nt have a problem with the notion for Max to develop further as a character from MM2 in terms of regaining his humanity etc; but there could have been a number of ways to affect that without bringing in a bunch of kids in designer bearskins doing a 4th rate take on Lord of the Flies.
There could have been more effective plot devices to get him to reconnect with the ghosts of his past. BTW: BANA FOR MAX ;-)

Here's some more words from FURY ROAD co-writer and storyboard artist Brendan McCarthy who states that in his view, "the 4th installment will be "the true follow-up to Mad Max 2" - To differentiate it from the misstep of Beyond Thunderdome. McCarthy calls Fury Road a "serious, savage, sexy and surreal sequel". He also promises, " a raw, kinetic assault that will take you to that world of manic Mad Max mayhem. You've got a great movie barrelling down the freeway at you in a few years time."

Nobody knows if it is, at least none of us here, that was just an assumption from some posters. I think people get to worked up on the PG-13 thing by the way. Is Die Hard 4 unrated gonna be so different from the movie version ? I doubt it. If you can't be interested in a movie because it doesn't drop the F word every three seconds (didn't happen in any of the Max films by the way) and doesn't show extensive depictions of excessive bloody carnage, well, if the director really wanted that to be in it, I guess that can be watched when the "Unrated" DVD comes out. I do see how it would upset Rambo fans if Stallone's next masterpiece (..) was gonna be a PG-13 film, but to boycott everything that comes without an R-rating, I don't know. We'll see. None of the Max films were huge blood and gorefests anyway.
