The Domino Man endures MICKEY BLUE EYES...
Here we are folks with The Domino Man and his latest adventures in the world of advance film watching! Though he failed at his attempt to get the crown jewel, he did make off with this look at MICKEY BLUE EYES. This an advanced look, so take care... It is surely not the finished film and there will be a great deal of changes made between now and the end of the process. So... without further warning... I turn you over to the man with the spots and the pearly ivories!
Hey Harry, The DOMINO MAN is back from an all too brief excursion to
Skywalker Ranch.Damn place is as difficult to decode as a David Koep
script - sealed air tight. I'm quite sure I ran into Hallenbeck
during this adventure, baseball to boot. We both got through their
first line of defence, but alas I was caught infiltrating the east
flank where I was later placed under surveillance by a Lucasfilm
nemesis. Don't despair,A New Hope is at hand,Hallenbeck is still
missing in action-and he might yet deliver the goods.
As a series of exercises to test my resolve and find out what I know,
they sent me to a test screening of Mickey Blue Eyes-the new(and I
use the term loosely)mob comedy starring Hugh Grant,James Caan and
Jeanne Tripplehorn. Even the mob didn't go to such lengths to get
people to talk. 30 minutes in and my nerves were shot.I'm stronger
than this I said to myself, you can beat this.Sure enough I managed to
defy the odds and I watched the film in its entirety.
The basice premise has Grant-who presides over art exhibits, marrying
Tripplehorn without him realizing that she is the daughter of a
Kingpin mob boss played by James "Corleone" Caan. When Grant realizes
that he is marrying into a mafia family complications insue, and plot
twist(use the term loosely)after plot twist drive the story forward.
If you think you've heard this somewhere before that's because you've
probably seen Jonathon Demme's "Married to the Mob" and most recently
Harold Ramis' "Analyze this". Don't think I've forgotten the
"Sopranos" either-a standard set in creative writing which the
aforementioned others pale in comparison. It would be futile for me
to give you(the helpless citizen being exploited)a detailed analysis
of the film, because it is simply not worth it,and brings back painful
memories of what I was forced to endure. I will say this, despite a
few chuckles in over elaborate scenes, the film is a reflection on a
Hollywood polluted with mediocrity and swimming in a genral lack of
creative growth. Apparently at one point during post production,Grant
took over the editing of the film from director Kelly Makin(Kids in
the Hall)in a bid to tweak and rectify "minor" plot holes and over
the top scenes. It didn't work-and to be blunt this is a turkey.
After retrieving me from the test screening-several Lucasfilm
advisories interrogated me further, and after surviving a 24 hour
Jean-Claude Van Damme film festival they decided I knew nothing and
they let me go. Joe Hallenbeck is closing in on the Empire-may the
force be with him.

The Mob genre is DEAD! Please stop making mob movies! Even movies that poke fun at the mob are tedious--MAFIA!, Analize this, etc. I propose that no filmmaker should ever make a mob movie again unless he can do it as good as Coppola did. The last 30 years of mob movies have almost all been Coppola-wannabes anyway (with the exception of Scorsese's films).

Here, here. The mafia has been done ad nauseum - both w/ comedies and dramas. The important thing is that it's been done well - as you were saying L'Auteur. I mean, how many Mafia jokes are left???? My onlt hope is that since the Mafia is a lot weaker today than its ever been, perhaps Hollywood will clue into this fact and they'll stop beating this dead horse.

When you say "the mafia" is weaker than ever today, you are probably referring to the La Cosa Nostra, the Italian-American (or Sicilian-American) criminal syndicate. It's true that their powers have been in decline since the hey-day of the prohibition. However, corruption and criminal racketeering still remain rampant.

Gotta disagree with you blokes here, I love mob movies. Analyze This was brilliantly funny. I don't really go for mob comedies in general though; Jane Austen's Mafia was pure torture. I wish Hollywood would return to the brutally accurate mob movies like
Goodfellas, Casino and the Godfather movies. I do think it's time they branched out into other organized crime strains; such as the Hell's Angels and the Yakuza, and the new Russian mob. The movies that have tryed to get into these subjects so far are mostly hack action drivel. A well researched movie about the Angels would be rivetting. Up here in Canada the RCMP are outright afraid of those guys. They own half the town I live in. -
Yeah, I did mean the Italian Mob - whose power has been diminishing over the years. The Italian Mob is also the one that has been covered the most in the movies. Actually, I love the mob movies (GoodFellas, GodFather's I & II, Casino, etc.), but the topic has been DONE, and done well so many times that I don't want to see it rehashed again. I agree w/ the poster above me - if Hollywood DOES do more mob movies - investigate the Russians or the Vietnamese. Now that would be interesting, and if done well - would be FRESH.
