Real News on a fifth BATMAN movie... as well as SWAMP THING

Published at:  Apr 18, 1999 1:46:50 AM CDT

Well folks, Mommie's Little Monster here had some pretty darn interesting news to pass along for us. I have been able to confirm that Michael Uslan was indeed at New Jersey City University, and that he is indeed the holder of the rights to the BATMAN film franchise as well as the SWAMP THING franchise. Looks like there is a possiblity of development movement on these films. If Warners has indeed allotted 28 million for SWAMP THING, then somewhere out there a script would have to exist, because that's how them budgets get made up... Has any one seen it? I hadn't even heard this project was in the realm of possiblity. I'd love to see SWAMP THING done really well and not as some sort of camp abortion of the original material. Keep your fingers crossed...

I am a media arts student at New Jersey City University. Monday
night when I went to get my learn on, i was told that we were having a guest
speaker who used to teach as an adjunct professor some time back. As it
turned out the speaker was Michael Uslan who owns the rights to the Batman
movie franchise and has served as a producer on the first four films. He was
an excellent speaker. He told us how he began his career at United Artists,
and how it took 14 years to finally bring Batman to the big screen. I
couldn't resist the temptation for the Q+A that followed. I asked him about
the next Batman movie and if the rumors were true about the year-one
storyline. He responded with: "Well I could tell you, but I'd have to kill
you." How cliche. Anyway he did say that the next movie will be smaller and
more similar in tone to the first film, and we can look for it somewhere
2000-2001 area.

Mr. Uslan also owns the rights and produced the Swampthing features. He
mentioned this 0nly after he asked if anyone was a reporter and proceeded to
announce that Warner Bros. was allotting 28 million dollars for a new
Swampthing feature as opposed to the mere 1.9 million spent on the first
film. he did not mention when that could be released. Oh joy!! Our
favorite walking spincach salad looks to be making a trip back to the big
screen.

I hope this information is helpful for you. If I find more info i will send
it your way.

your humble servant,

mommieslittlemonster

    Hmm...who gets the car keys?

    by edward peregrine

Encouraging news from Mr. Uslan. Nice to know he thinks that after Wes Craven's noble movie (have we forgotten), Jim Wynorski's dubious remake, and the too-thin USA series, that there's still mileage in Swampy.
As I said on my Spider-Man post, neither of these features should be given to a "name," otherwise we risk more of the same ol' Schumacher and Goldsman crud. And meanwhile, names like the Wachowskis, the Raimis, that's lazy thinking. With all the attention on THE MATRIX, they're going to be busy with their own properties; they won't want to scrap with someone else's.
Why have the people behind the outstanding Batman cartoons never been approached or considered for a live-action movie? Those would be my first pick for either franchise. Beyond that, I think a good mind for Batman would be Darren Aronofsky; look what he did with PI. He could make a "small" film as Uslan desires, with the kind of unique visuals and intelligent story that could finally compare favorably to the first.
As for Swamp Thing, I would like to see Guillermo Del Toro--as disappointing as MIMIC may have been to some, I think CRONOS is a great dress rehearsal for Swamp Thing; a hero made montrous against his will who still has human love but knows he can never enjoy it again. Remember how heartbreaking it was when Jesus' granddaughter offered her own blood to him, and he chose to kill himself instead? There's the pathos needed for the movie.

Keep Warner AWAY from comic adaptations

    by zcarstheme

Nope, no matter how hard I try, I can't get any enthusiasm together for the idea of WB digging up SWAMP THING for another round of ritual humiliation. Yup, course it COULD be good. COULD be. WON'T be, though, will it ? SWAMP THING ? We'll either get more camp crap or something approaching a SPAWN remake with some mud in it. Christ, even BATMAN 5 has got a better shot at turning out as a halfway decent flick. I mean, B&R was the equivalent of walking into an extremely expensive restaurant and taking a shit on the floor. By even CONTEMPLATING returning to the same restaurant, even WB must realise that they're gonna have to come up with a pretty fantastic excuse.
Gotta split ; the 'Cruelty To Metaphors' police are coming to take me away..

Del Toro is doing Hellboy, and after that he's teaming up with Katsuhiro Otomo to make a live-action film called DOMU: A Child's Dream. I had the pleasure of being e-mailed by the man, and he stated that he's really looking forward to Hellboy. But as for Swamp Thing, I'm afraid he's booked.

    Batman films = poop

    by gsolo

I watched the first Batman the other day after not seeing it for many years. Cinematography's really cool. Keaton and Nicholson are good most of the time. Palance is great. That script is so god aweful. Really aweful. Bassinger is rediculous. Prince? And this film was the better of the four. They need to start over with a small director, a low budget, and no test screenings.

    big budget comix flix doomed

    by the boom

There can never be a good comic book adaption when you have a ton of money involved for the simple fact that the production team will try too hard to "personalize" the project and thus stray from the source material too much. The real question is, WHY? Why do motion picture studios miss the boat on this one, when the TV guys (at least in animation) seem to be able to get it right? Why do the big money boys think that there are plenty good reasons to completely disregard the plot and character elements that made these properties successful? It is just a matter of ego?

OH YES!!!! BATMAN 5!?!? KICK ASS!!! I have been waiting for the continuation of this great movie series ever since the last masterpiece, BATMAN AND ROBIN! Now THAT was a film! And BATMAN FOREVER? GENIUS!!! Oh please, Warner Brothers, I know that you guys are real busy with all the excellent films you never cease to churn out, but please oh please find the time to make Batman 5!! Get Joel Shoemaker to direct again, and give him at least a $200 million budget! Forget Lucas and Kubrick, THIS is the movie to salivate over!

I really would like to see Warner Brothers give Joel $200 million to spend on Batman 5. Joel, the motherfuckin' hack moron that he is, would waste away the money on crappy cinematography, god-awful-ugly special FX, big dumb and totally incorrect movie stars, and a lot of insulting marketing. Then, the movie would gross about $40 million on opening night (because people are stupid), and it would gross another $15 million more over the next several weeks due to bad word-of-mouth. Then the cocksucking Warner Brothers (and that whore Joel) would finally go under. Praise be the day!

Batman 5 and Swamp Thing 3

    by bloknarpin

I am always surprised to see the negativity concerning a fifth Batman movie. As a die Hard Batman fan I feel that I fifth Batman film is absolutly CRUCIAL to the franchise. Batman and Robin was SOOO god-aweful that I feel I fifth film is needed because we can't POSSIBLY let it end on such a sour note! Batman 1 through 3 were great films. I had some problems with some of the dialouge in Batman FOrever (I'll get Drive through. Are you trying to get under my cape, Doctor?) But all in all it was very true to the comics and pretty well done. While I think the two films that Micheal Keaton stared in were the best I dont think he had anything to do with it. In fact I think he was the worst Batman. George Cloony really is the perfect casting choise. He's a great actor and he LOOKS like Batman. He wasn't too hot in Batman and Robin but I think with a DECENT director directing him he could be the best Batman to date. I Really hope they give him another shot in the fifth film. Part Four's flaws are completely due to Schumacher, NOT Cloony. It's not fair to put the blame on him. In any event I think the next Batman movie will be quite good. After all the critisim that Batman and Robin took, combined with the recent sucess of Marvel comics based movies (Blade, Men in Black, and the upcoming SpiderMan) I think Warner KNOWS that they can't fool around with this. They aren't stupid, and they KNOW Batman 5 HAS to be good. I mean look how much time they have been taking to decide what direction to take the franchise next? Thats a good sign. They arent rushing into this. They are taking time and discussing where to go next. As for Swamp Thing 3...Well I didn't care for Return of the Swamp Thing at all but Craven's 1982 original was pretty cool concidering it's low budget. Now that Craven's a big time director maybe they can get him back and give him a BUDGET this time. In the right hands Swamp Thing 3 could be good.

Why is everyone down on Mimic? That was a cool, well-made genre flick, if you dig the material then fine, if it's not you kind of movie, fine as well. I'm not a big monster/horror but I could appreciate that it was wellmade, just as I could appreciate that intrinsically, IKWYDLS was well-made. As for Batman 5...I don't really care. The first ones were cool, the third one okay, never saw the fourth one despite a great cast..I'm just not excited for a new Batman until someone starting working on a Batman that's worth being excited about. I'm not going to hope and say wouldn't that be cool? (although i've had a good sucess rate with that...Woo getting picked for MI2, Burton doing Sleep Hollow, Lord of the Rings being made like it is). BTW, Hellboy and DOMU should be worth a look. I've yet to see Cronos, but I've heard good things about it. Isn't it some kind of unique take on Vampires?

    great villians

    by sting

If the speaker was telling the truth, as so few directors and owners do about their work, there is potential. Scarecrow, Madhatter, Clock King (maybe Red Claw, the Samurai, Killer Croc as side plots) are great potential villians that have not yet been butchered. Keaton was the best Batman, he truly made it the "Dark Knight", while Schumaker, Clooney and Kilmer twisted it into the "NEON Knight". Joker the best villian, with a great plot that related to us in the 80's. Riddler, Two-face, Bane , Poison Ivy, and the worst Mr. Freeze all destroyed the image that had been created by the cartoon series. If they can bring a dark plot for the villians that were not destroyed, then I believe this can be a great movie. THe other problem they have had is that they are running out of villians, they can't keep killing them in the end. You can't make it a perfect world in the end, evil never is destroyed. Batman 2 figured that out by keeping the insane clown posse and catwoman alive, maybe they should return.

    by bighit

I think that the excellent Batman movie would be based upon Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns" Get an older actor like Clint eastwood and present the story along the same lines as the book. Including the fight against superman at the end. Even leave in the mental commentary from Bruce Wayne as he is fighting.

    by the big t

Mind you this is what I think right now. Warner Bros has been doing better lately but something really really big needs to help this franchise save it self from Batman 4 or as I like to call it The Ambiguously Gay Duo. Personally I think they need to get Val Kilmer back as Batman kill Batgirl and toughen up Robin big time. I honestly think THE director for this 5th film should definitely be Stephen Norrington(Blade) he can do dark. Wanna criticize me personally email me then its no prob.

    BATMAN REBORN

    by aint i cool

I think Batman 5 should be a totally new beginning for the Dark Knight. A total retelling of the Batman legend that focuses on the Batman/Bruce Wayne characters above all others. I would have it be called appropriately BATMAN REBORN. I would have it chronicle why and how Bruce Wayne became Batman much like in the original Superman movie. The main part of the story would take place when Batman first appears on the Gotham Nightlife. At the same time, DA and good friend of Bruce Wayne's Harvey Dent is campaigning for re-election. Eventually, Two-Face will be created and Batman will have to make a choice to stop his old friend... even if it means killing him.
Main focuses in the story should be:
*Batman/Bruce Wayne's duality and how his dark side affects his normal life.
*Harvey Dents relationship as Bruce's best friend and then as Batman's arch enemy
*Harvey Dents psychological problems- Multiple Personality is not a joke.
    Plot elements would be:
*At first Harvey Dent wants Batman stopped and then Batman helps him so he can be the best DA he can be but it backfires
*Another villian that could fit nicely in this storyline is Poison Ivy- In the comics Pamela Iseley almost killed Harvey Dent once. Then after Harvey Dent becomes Two-Face they could become bitter partners in crime.

The problem with the villians teaming up its become cleche where its not interesting anymore. In this Pamela Iseley/Poison Ivy (a simpler character than Batman and Two-Face who needs less introduction and could be saved for later films)and Two-Face would be an interesting pair up because what they were like in the past- it goes with the duality theme of the film.

    Suggestions for the Cast
    Batman/Bruce Wayne-
Personally I liked Val Kilmer the best. Personally, I have no idea who else would be good for it.
    Harvey Dent/Two-Face-
Tommy Lee Jones is so perfect for the role... he just didn't have enough to do in BF. But I think he'd be great at showing Harvey Dents fall from grace.
    Pamela Iseley/Poison Ivy-
    Julia Roberts- Duh!
Commisioner Gordon- I picture Tom Skerritt in the role personally. I think its about time we got a new Gordon, and had the character given more of a role with more respect.
    Alfred- Micheal Gough is allright.

    Well... what do ya think?

My word on the whole Batman series

    by sunsleeper

Ok guys, we all agree that the whole series as not been what most fans had excepted. While they were some good moments from them. All in all, every movie sucked. Especially the last one. But Batman movies were not produce to be good movies, they were made for one reason, money. Warner bros. doesn't care about the movie itself, for them producing another Batman flick is another way to sell toys. If you look at BATMAN & ROBIN, you'll notice that they used at least 5 Bat vehicules, and the villains each had a nice car. They were dozens of costumes. And tons of Gadget. Batarangs, Bat-bombs. All those things are put there to sell them later at Toys'R'us. The worst part of it is that their plan works. BATMAN&ROBIN made loads of money with the toys and we the Bat-fans even bought some of these craps, we encourage this use of our beloved comic book character. It even makes comic-fans ridiculous. Now Batman is associated to an awfull Rubber suit. It makes Adam West looks like a god. And it makes mass-media interpret even worst the medium that are comics. And the worst part of this is that if a Batman 5 movie comes out with this kind of attitude we have seen in the past, the same fate as BATMAN&ROBIN, failure. But there is always hope that one day people will leave the theater amazed by our Dark knight, maybe for the first time...

    Frank Miller

    by godbear

I haven't read comics in a long time so I don't know what the man's status is but is seems to me the best person to write the next Batman movie would be Frank Miller. He did probably the two best graphic novels ever with Dark Knight Returns and that Daredevil thing. And didn't he have some kind of writing credit on Robocop 2? You wan't somebody with a real feel for the material, that' who you should go with. I would say do Dark Knight Returns but I'm not sure how well it would translate in the big screen.

Time/Warner doesnt need to feature stuff in the Batman movies to make lame toys to sell. There are TONS and TONS of Batman merchandise crap out there NOW that was NEVER featured in ANY of the movies AT ALL. Besides, why are you so down on Toys? I never buy that stuff, and it doesnt effect me watching the movie. Here's what they should do:1) GET Micheal KEATON for Batman (I know I like George Clooney also but since he has already taken credit for the Batman and Robin failure, he'll never get his old gig back).2) Keep Robin only if they Keep the original Robin outfit. This new guy is L-A-M-E. 3) Put nipples on the Batgirl outfit or Kill Batgirl (did you know there was originally a 1st BATGIRL before Barbara Gordon in the comics??) and I like Alicia Silverstone also.**4**(FOUR) NOW EVERYBODY LISTEN TO THIS: REPLACE PAT HINGLE with DONALD SUTHERLAND as Commish. Gordon PLEASE!!!!! I'm starting the official "dump PAT Hingle" foundation for Batman 5. I HATE This actor. HE IS NOT COMMISH GORDON!!!!***DONALD SUTHERLAND as Commish. Ugh! 7)Limit BATMAN arsenal to just the Batmobile (or some (ONE) other vehicle) and thats it...8)LOSE THE NEON DAYGLOW PUNKROCKERZ and 9)the stupid gang of thugs that follow the Villain around should be limited to 2 thugs ONLY (per villain). More On BATMAN REBORN

    by aint i cool

As you can tell I've been giving this alot of thought... I was hoping people would read my ideas and think they were cool and then they could spread them across the internet and maybe Warners will hear them. Now, I know I said Val was my favorite Batman but George Clooney was good too and he does look like Bruce Wayne. However, putting him in the movie reminds people of Batman and Robin and makes them think this movie's gonna be the same. I think he needs a 2nd chance to proove himself. I was also thinking, since BATMAN REBORN would start everything over, why not make sure we get a good introduction to some characters who will be important in the future? Imagine if they had put Barbara Gordon in the original BATMAN and had actually had Harvey Dent be in BATMAN RETURNS? Ofcourse, it would've been good if they had cast Tommy Lee Jones in the role in the FIRST PLACE! Billy Dee Williams? Lando is not Two-Face! That would've been so weird having Billy Dee become Two-Face... Yuck! Continuity makes a series. You've gotta hand it to BATMAN & ROBIN, it did seem like it was at least in the same series as BATMAN FOREVER. Tim Burtons BATMAN RETURNS wasn't very congruent with his original. Gotham City looked very unfamiliar. Everything from BATMAN FOREVER looks the same in BATMAN & ROBIN. Wayne Manor is the same. Police Headquarters is the same. The new series needs that kind of familiarity. Like you're stepping into the same world every time you go to see a Batman movie. I think the new series really needs to look at what was right and what was wrong in the last one and incorporate the positive aspects of it.
Points I want to make concerning past and fute bat-flicks:
*I think Batman needs an armored rubber suit but not one with nipples. And not like the one in BATMAN RETURNS where it looked robotic in the torso area. The muscles work... just lose the nipples.
*Batman needs a vihicle for the land the sea and the air:
The Batmobile, The Batwing, and the Batboat were good additions and so was the Bat-Cycle. The other vihicles were overdoing it. I personally don't think Batman has vihicles just in case someone like Mr.Freeze comes along and ices the city. I think he could've just made special adjustments to existing vihicles to fight Mr.Freeze instead of making all new ones.
    * I thought the Red Triangle circus gang was a good idea but they could've made a great movie if Dick Grayson had been with them before the Penguin corrupted the gang. And why not have the Joker be in on the action? Makes sense to me.
*Speaking of the circus-- Batman and Robin was the only film in the series that didn't have a clown in it (No, Commisioner Gordon doesn't count) ... And it was also the only one that failed at the box office. Coincidence?
*Batman doesn't always need a love interest. Sorry folks... He just doesn't, unless his love interest actually helps propell the plot. I think they gave him one in Batman & Robin just so it wouldn't look like he and Dick Grayson were lovers since Batman Forever was really a film about coming out. (There's gay themes all over that movie!)
Well... Thats all I have to say about that. I am gonna actually try to write a script for BATMAN REBORN and one day it will be made... BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

    Battyman 5

    by the dood

Personally I thought Keaton was the best Batman, as he dealt with the dual aspect of the character well, making both characters seem very different, as opposed to the wooden acting of Val. I personally think George Clooney was ok as Batman, i certainly dont think he should blame himself for Batman & Robin's failure...Its not his fault that the script was crap, and that Joel had been taking too many pills.
Personally I think Batman 5 is needed, to redeem the series.
The Batman saga works in shifts ok people?
Batman and Robin were quite serious characters until the "kooky" tv series made them into a mockery, sure it had its funny moments, but many fans were not amused by the "holy this" and the "anti bat that" or whatever. Then the comics killed off Robin, and we were given a dark knight.
Tim Burton's films helped establish this, and helped us forget about the camp tv series. Back in the comics of course, there was a new robin, and I admit, I like the new robin. Batman was able to stop mourning his second Robin, and finally get back in action.
Now Joel comes along, and maybe he read a few more recent comics and thought "robin-cool costume, Batman is no longer a lonesome dark night." Maybe he was good intentioned, in wanting to keep the movies more up to date with the comics, and batman forever was ok...but i felt it had too much humour...like the series...And the most recent film might as well star Adam West and Burt Ward for the terrible dialogue and sheer campness.
God ive rambled im sorry. My point is this, to those who say "the series is dead" etc, remember that Batman was able to survive and grow from the humiliation of the TV series, so hopefully the same will happen from Batman & Robin

Why limit Swampy to the movies/comics?

    by swampchick

I, personally, would love to see
the movie in the style of the
TV show that went on from '90-92.
Unapologetically. Laugh all you want, but I loved it,
    cheeziness, bad FX and all.

When the writing was good, it
was hilarious ("That's A Wrap" and "Heart of the Mantis" of the 3rd season), and when it was bad, it was just *bad* ("The Curse", "Smoke & Mirrors", and the entire 1st season {IMHO...}). But a lot of that badness came from trying to create a plot in 20 minutes.

The bad special effects came from the joke budget they were on.

But if you get a 90-minute movie with this $28 mil budget, I'm thinking those 2 problems are already done away with. :)

I have no desire to see Louis Jourdan walking around as Arcane again, or some big-name actor; I loved the way Mark Lindsay Chapman did the role, and I also loved the interaction with Arcane's assistant, who wouldn't even exist if the movie is based off either the comic books or the previous movies. I also liked the ensemble feel of the show, which I think could be really interesting to see in a movie.

I don't think that the possibility of the movie being based off the TV show is realistic, since the TV show is nothing like the comic... which effectively gets rid of the movie's biggest fanbase.

Then again, the TV show managed to combine dark elements with humor, which could translate well, rather than all dark (like the first movie) or all light/campy (like the second)

Okay, so it's probably never gonna happen, I'd love to a Swampy movie with the cast of the TV show. It wouldn't fit into the timeline of the movies, but who cares? It's not like the first two were exactly blockbusters. And because the show wasn't much LIKE the movies, that might bode well for it. :)

-JJ, who misses her young, British Arcane dearly...

    BATMAN 5

Keaton was, without question, the best Batman. He may not have been big but Batman was a martial arts master. Plus how hard can it be to make him bigger for a re-appearence in the new movie. Make him lift, feed him beef, whatever. Keaton portrayed the Dark Night character perfectly. On top of that he had two perfect actors to play the parts of the villians. Batman 1 and 2 were great because they focused on the themes of one villian. The others sucked because of the overload of villians. you can't have two main villians in a Batman movie. That's what makes them super-villians, they work alone with there own theme crimes. Once Riddler came on the scene in Batman Forever it was like Two-Face was only a henchmen. Arnold as Mr. Freeze was enough to ruin the last fluke. Then they added Poison Ivy, Bane, and Batgirl all in the same movie. I just hope the new movie is dark and only focusses on one villian. Others like the Mad Hatter(side thought: Christopher Lloyd), need ther own movie. Stick to the Scarecrow(Jeff Goldbloom) causing Batman to have bad dreams about the Joker(Jack, Again) and we have a great movie.

    What can be said.....?

    by iceman1of1

What can I say to all those people who have comented on Batman 5? How about this, you all have way to much time on your hands, you bitch way to much, what have you ever done for the Bat movies?? They have given you hours and hours of enjoyment and what do you do in repay you bitch and complain. The Bat movies aren't all based on this fact they are for watching and having fun with, and for those of you who think Keaten is to small and could never fight those guys in the first bat films, well gee why don't you think about that for a sec...he is in this suit that is stronger then a bullit proof vest and you are asking why he can beat them up, come on think for a sec idiots, Batman uses not only his fighting skills but his gadgits built into his suit to help him, DUH!! If any of you were paying attention there is talk of the next Bat flick to be about Batman first becoming Bat's, Based on Frank Millers Comic Series Batman Year One. So if anything, IF ANYTHING you should repay them for atleast making these movies, they are trying atleast, what are you doing, nothing your just sitting here bitching about them. Ice

    Batvillains

    by enamic

With all the other previous rumours about villains like scarecrow and so on, then again "Year One" stories, I wonder why no one ever looks for better villains! They should just stick to the movie continuity, bring in Ras Al Ghul, who could try to destroy Gotham and the world as he always does. Talia would of course fall for Batman, while the Joker gets revived in Ras' Lazarus Pit and shoots Batgirl. Robin quits his job and becomes Nightwing. Give it a dark, but adventurous James Bond like feeling and it would be perfect!

    Batman 5 - need help

    by jsun1227

currently i am writing a script for Batman 5...the movie centers on the Scarecrow and an experiment in fear with Batman as test subject. i wont say too much about it, but i do need somebody's help. if anybody knows how to reach Michael Uslan the producer and owner of the Batman rights, please let me know. i want this movie to get out before they ruin the series with that Year One crap. trust me, the comic was good, but not for a movie. besides, is anyone realy interested in a young, new batman? truth is, for a new batman movie to work, it must follow the series, only better. So, please, if anyone knows how to get in touch with any of the prinicipal actors: Keaton (Batman), Chris O'DOnnel (Robin/Nightwing), and im thinking Christopher Lloyd (Scarecrow), please let me know. Also, again, if anyone knows how to get in touch with Michael Uslan, please tell me. maybe i can stop him from making a huge mistake....not sure when ill be back to check the postings, so if you have info, please email me....
