You know, granted I was making dinner while this was on, but I never saw any explanation for how Dan knew about tachyons in the first place. When he asked about them, it seemed to me it came out of nowhere. Did I miss some earlier conversation he had with someone about tachyons?

Alvin (Sandra's husband) from The Cosby Show. I don't think I've seen him in anything since that went off the air. I really like this show even though there's not much to it. But they've added a few layers I wasn't expecting with Livia and this doctor who's phoning him through time.

Anyway Nip/Tuck starts soon and while I can watch House of Payne in HD i can't watch FX in HD, just crappy digital with fucking feekback from comedy central in the back ground. What's the point of a time-travel show if you're only going back

Yeah, sure, one episode was in the 70's....on an airplane. But the vast majority is in the 80s and 90s, and then they start playing a song on a bar stereo that was popular on that year....wow...what a waste. Time travel, and THIS is what we get? Doesn't this sound like an idea for a SNL sketch? We're going back in time....to the 1990s...wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

but I'd like to see some sort of ongoing arc BESIDES the formula now. We get it. He jumps at the worst possible times!!!! Ok cool. Move on. And his wife pretty much ruins the show for me. She's a mega bitch and now that we're 4 eps in we're STILL dealing with her being a mega bitch. He should go back in the past and fix the future so his wife and his brother stay together even though it means his son won't exist. BUT...wait for it people....the kid was his brothers all along so he didn't zap him out of being. OOOoooh the heartbreak. BAM. There you go JB writers....make it happen and get rid of Katie.

His phone call to the Livermore Labs guy about tachyons was completely out of the blue. There was no lead in or hint prior to that.
He is a reporter, so I chalked it up to that.

Well...there's quite a bit that happened between the dinosaurs and the 1980s. I realize it's because of budget, but still, if freakin' star trek could have a "1940s" episode, why the hell can't a show ABOUT time travel. It's like a travel show that only covers other towns in your zip code.

I was one of those people hijacking other shows' TBs crying out for a Journeyman TB. Now that we have one, everyone is pissing on it. I love the show, its enjoyable, well acted and does show signs of creating a story arc. It also has funky mysterious elements to unravel. I hope it doesnt get cancelled unless of course it nose dives into a pile of manure. Come you people who like this show and reads this talkback but dont post an entry. Post something to tip the TB scales towards the positive end.

I bet it was just poor editing, because there must have been some sort of lead up to his phone call but somehow ended up on the cutting room floor. So I guess we have to fill the gap ourselves...

Best new show this year imho. Didn't Dan ask the newspaper's science editor about tachyons BEFORE the phone call, I'm pretty sure he did.

...was the ending of the first episode. I was not going to return to the second episode, but then the scene where he proved to his wife he was telling the truth about time traveling did it. They crossed the finish line with that.
Then, his long-since-thought-to-be-dead ex-fiance' shows up and it turns out she's a time traveler too? I'm guessing she is doing for him, what he is doing for the others he interacts with "in the ether"
The added complexity of the cop brother (and marrying HIS ex-girlfriend), Dan being a recovering compulsive gambler, adds some decent conflict that makes the show entertaining to me. -
Yeah, the parallels with Quantum Leap are pretty obvious and the makers are not shying away from the comparison. In fact far from it as they blatantly made a delightful in-joke reference to it when Journeyman leaped into a church in a rough and tumble manner, the priest noticed him and sighed "oh boy" - nice touch. But thats enough in-jokes, dont go down that route, now y'hear me?

to the 70's 80's & 90's has to do with WHY he is travelling in time. I thought his travel was tied to his meeting Livia but he has a couple of times traveled to before he met her. Maybe it's like Sam Becket, he can only time travel within his own lifetime. If so he won't be going back into the 60's or earlier.His obsession with tachyons did seem sudden to me. I assumed he caught a rerun of ST:TNG the night before which made him go "hmmmm".If I was him, I would make a list of winning lottery numbers for the 1990s and when I went back buy a ticket for the next draw. Keep the ticket on me so whenever I went back to within 1 year of when I bought it, cash it out, open a bank account, and be rich in the future. Or buy IBM or Apple stock in the late 80's. Or better yet, a few shares of Berkshire Hathaway.

totally agree, the end of the first episode really sucked me in. then they're adding some more interesting things like the ex and the guy from Livermore Labs. I think it's significant that the guy knew Dan's father also, there has to be something going on there.

And whats so good about that Idea is that you wouldnt be altering the past in any drastic way or blowing up the whole universe as you would be accessing the money in the present and future! Very cool idea.
BUT who is driving Journeyman to make those jumps? If that driving force knows of any intention of making profitably gain, then the jumps would probably cease - hmm possible obstacle :)

...and I say this as someone who would like to see it continue, is could his wife come up with something a little more believable than being annoyed by the fact that her husband it timetravelling? For real? I mean, if my wife disappeared off a friggen airplane, I'd do a little more than roll my eyes.

To be the time traveler over the hot head brother. As a reporter, he's the perfect person to be sent back in time to help all these people. He's his own Al/Ziggy since he has to figure out what he's doing there.

Although unfortunately it has nothing to do with the level of quality (which I think has been pretty high)...but it has everything to do with the writer's strike. Without new stuff coming down the pipeline, this season has a chance to have the FEWEST shows cancelled in recent memory. Which is a good thing for genre fans, I'd say.

it all hinges on why he's travelling. If (like Quantum Leap) it's because there's a magic force for Good that is only able to solve the world's problems by bending the laws of physics, that's lame and renders the show worthless. If it's something more interesting, well... that makes it worthwhile.

My favorite new shows. Both have been excellent and consistently beat the crap out of Heroes and The Office, both of which ARE starting to pick up.

Really. If you knew you could travel back in time and it disrupted your present life to the degree where keeping a steady job was hard, wouldn't you try to make money by investing in the past and reaping in the present?

by taking from his past self out of his own apartment, like the money on the coffee table, or the phone charger. How many times have we lost something and could swear it was there the day before? Maybe it's our future selves taking what we need. So remember to always keep your keys, even long after you have moved, in case you find yourself time-travelling and need a clean shirt or some extra cash.

Its mention didn't come out of the blue. He asked the science editor who he would talk to about the theoretical possibilities of time travel who referred him to the guy he called. It's been a running thing he's been researching for a while now. It's just hard to keep track of because he only does a a few minutes of scattered research in between all his jumps and work/life responsibilities.
Great show, btw. I love how they made the time travel much more tangible. If he's driving a car when he leaves, the car crashes. If he wants to bring back something from the future or past, no problem. The only thing I don't like is his job; it doesn't seem very plausible that he could be getting things done while hardly ever being there. -
I look forward to it every week and even more than Heroes, which is a disappointment so far. I should like Chuck and Bionic Woman more than I do , but Chuck is kinda boring to tell the truth. BW is getting a little better, but if Sackhoff leaves, it's going downhill. I like Life, but more for the whole conspiracy behind his imprisonment, and less for the uninteresting cases, but just like House, the cases are more to show his personality and how he tackles challenges than to be interested by themselves.

It's a sci-fi show. Anyone who's seen a sci-fi show before knows that tachyons are time travel particles. They probably didn't feel like wasting the audience's time with an expository scene they've seen in every single time travel story ever.

that there are actually some people that would openly admit they like CHUCK, talk about boring and stupid,i watched 3 episodes and i couldnt take it anymore.... it gave me headaches.....and to watch a show so u can beat ur 2 inch pecker to a hot blonde in pigtails is not a valid reason for continuing to watch CHUCK.......journeyman is one of the best new shows this year...chuck and reaper are not in that class.... bionic woman is further up that list than either of those.... if u dont like the show u prob dont like intelligent shows, shows that require a brain....chuck is one of those brain dead shows that would probably be better suited on mtv with all the other "intended for brainless morons" type shows........as for LIFE...its another great new show, but it too also requires a certain amount of intelligence.....and for all u crank yankers theres a hot brunette on the show too....hint...its his partner .....

the grief over heroes.... even a friend or 2 of mine dont like how slow its going....and i had to tell them its a slow build, which im surprised i would even have to say...theyre putting all the pieces on the board in these first few episodes and soon they will all start moving....i dont get the impatience ...just dont get it....i know all u people have such important lives that u cant spend 40 some odd minutes a week watching a show and no one is having a powers showdown...i know it takes away from your nightly sex romps with the inflatable chick....

would EB Farnum, Williams Sanderson, would have made a great addition to the cast of Life? He was awesome in last week's episode, and almost thought he would stay at the end there. Bet he comes back now and then...if the show lasts that is.

which is good sign. the show's not doing great ratings-wise, but NBC really seems to be trying to give their shows the biggest chance they can. it seems like the past 2-3 years, NBC has been the most reliable network... i really like this show.

Yes, the mysteries are intriguing to me to. Such as why Dan never asks Olivia what the hell is going on. Why he always acts so shocked that he is going to time travel and doesn't just prepare for it...carry around a backpack or at least a fanny pack of items he might need. (And promos for next week's show...him alone with the kid when he travels. Smart idea there chief.)
While initially enjoyable (I thought the pilot ended on a really strong note, he and his wife digging up the box)...it has sense become a contrived piece of fluff where characters act not like any normal person would (Dan, how about growing a pair and saying to your wife "BITCH! I TIME TRAVEL AND THERE'S NOTHING I CAN DO ABOUT IT! QUIT GIVING ME THE MOPEY LOOKS AND MAKING A MOVE FOR MY BROTHER YOU WHORE!"), and every element of the show seems like a square peg in a round hole to fit the need for creating mystery and drama where there really shouldn't be any. -
He also has told his wife something similar to your diatribe, Executor, but he was nicer about it.
This was episode four, and he has been adjusting his life around the time traveling and Livia actually primed him with some ideas on how to prepare.
I like the show and it's cool that there are others that do too. -
Journeyman: good, fairly good pacing and some developing characters there. Premise is okay, though now that he realizes what happens to him, he oughta carry a fanny pack or backpack with useful items in it, etc. Whoever suggested an investment in the past to ensure cashflow in the future had a good idea. His relationship with his wife is not stable to begin with--she was dating his brother! So this puts a strain on things, as it would for anyone. But don't assume that they were rock solid and normal to begin with.Chuck: is just great fun, with likeable characters, not taking itself too seriously. Not unlike Eureka. I like it, and actually Enjoy it more than Journeyman. Just a lot of fun.Heroes: whoever didn't get all the "grief" about may be overstating: I am somewhat disappointed, but mostly impatient--I want them to get it back up to speed, already! Maybe with KB the plot will get un-stalled.Bionic Woman: this one does not appeal if you have a working brain--they are doing one stupid thing after another, and so it, like some other shows, requires suspension of disbelief, and some trust that they will go somewhere good. Unfortunately, the only really interesting character (Corvis) is not gonna be a regular, and the main character is not written well (yet). It is hard to like or care about anyone in this show. They have got work to do, and the race to get away from it by all the producers and writers is indicative of a problem. They really oughta just yank it and go start over. Cast is great, but so so SO poorly written. The "conflict" in each story relies on every single character doing and saying stupid things. You would think it was Stargate Atlantis, for gods sakes.

Hey SantiagoAtez- Great call about it being like a travel show that only covers towns in your own zip code. Here's something they could do: He eats a gallon of (insert your favorite flavor here) ice cream, then goes back in time one hour to not eat the ice cream. This way he can have enjoyed the ice cream and not gain weight. Call it Temporal Bulemia so the episode can pretend to have relevant social commentary. I am now going back in time five minutes to not post this. So you better hurry up and read this post before I change the timeline...

I've been hooked since the first episode. I was glad to see it's not a total rip-off of "Quantum Leap." The lead, Kevin McKidd, is a bad-ass and yet another British import classing up US airwaves (ie: Hugh Laurie). Plus, now that the "mythology" is kicking in, I'm digging it. Why is he traveling? Who or what is doing it? And, I wonder if he was holding onto a person when he "leaped" would they travel with him?

I hate to say it, but I like this show better than Heroes now. Heroes is falling into that Lost abyss of taking too much time with the storylines. I don't need instant gratification, but this season is going soooo slow. I really like Journeyman though. I thought it was great when the kid finally saw him disappear. Each week it is getting better and better.

Shit, he could be hugging his wife and accidentily bring her back, then he could accidently leave her in the past and not be able to get back to her...

But it's more of a rip-off of the novel The Time Traveler's Wife. It's a little bit of that and a little but of Quantum Leap. And I don't care. I was one of those that had no interest in this show (even with McKidd--I fucking loved Rome) but then I happened to catch the second episode. I was surprised that I didn't hate it. And I keep coming back and it keeps getting better. I like that they don't stick with the status quo. I like this whole new sub-plot with the scientist and my favorite bit from tonight was the kid seeing his dad jump. That was awesome.

Bionic Woma--sucks. Really, really sucks. The writing in the first episode made cringe. I tried half-watching the next two but they were painful. I've painlessly removed it from my DVR list yesterday.
Chuck--disappointing. Thought I'd love it. Didn't. It's been mildly amusing but so mild that I can't decide whether to watch tonight's episode or erase it.
Reaper--not as good as I hoped but I think the writing is fairly good and I definitely laugh out loud once or twice an episode. A lot of the opinion of this show seems to be dependent on whether you love or loathe the sidekick.
Life--like Journeyman I wasn't expecting to like this. I'm not completely sold but I will continue watching for a few more at least.
Pushing Daisies--haven't seen the most recent but I thought the first two were excellent! Waiting to see if the cuteness of it gets to be too much or if they can strike just the right balance.
Overall, I think it's been a pretty underwhelming season for new shows. Sorry to post this here--perhaps we need a "State of the Season" thread? -
When Dan tells his dad in the past that he heard about him from Herb Caen. It shows the writers must know their San Francisco history. For those who don't know, Caen was a columnist for the SF Chronicle. He was beloved by everyone in the Bay Area for his wit and humor. He coined the phrase Baghdad by the Bay when he described SF (back when being compared to Baghdad was a compliment.)

I can't say I don't like it. But, his family dynamic is fantastically intense for being only five episodes in. The immediate effect is harsh for his wife and kid. I just hope they don't cop out and have her either accept it too quickly or resent him too quickly. The tension draws you in, I find so far that his time in the present is much more engaging than the stories in the past.

I really like Journeyman, the concept is old hat but Kevin McKidd makes the series fresh and I like the added plotline with the Physics Professor who knows more than he's letting on. Dan should really tell Jack the truth- being a cop, he could help Dan out. Livia is a time jumper but her ability stopped when she met Dan, I'm thinking Livia is actually from the future, like 2012 or something.

wasnt he in some kind of a car accident on the first episode? but they could not find him, which seems to be a hit and run, but there was no consequences for him. his brother seems to be a hard nosed cop, but couldve helped him. but an explanation wouldve sufficed.

It appears he can't bring people back but stuff he is carrying. Remember he was carrying his kid near the beginning of the episode when he went back and his kid stayed behind. Which I don't get. If you can bring back a pipe wrench you're holding then you should be able to bring back someone who is grabbing onto you. But if they start allowing him to bring people back in time with him it would add a great element to the story as well if he accidentally left someone behind when he went back.
This show also reminds me of a book I read a long time ago about a young woman who went back in time to around the 1850s. She was a modern black woman who went back to the 1850s and was treated as a slave. She accidentally brought her husband back in time and he got stranded for ten years. If I recall, she couldn't control when she went back in time either. Now what was the name of that book? -

I'm surprised - and glad! - that there is a talkback for this. My co-workers are not watching this show because they've heard of the low rating and they don't want to get into a show that might get canceled soon.
I've started watching this show only because it's Lucius Vornenus. It's very well written! I love how they haven't fallen into the trap of making his wife not believe the time-travel for a full season, and we haven't been subjected too much to cheezy personal stories from the past. This kind of stuff makes me cringe. The show is neatly balanced so there isn't too much of one given thing, and there ends up being quite a bit of action.The only problem: we know we're going to be teased a long time about the back story of the time travel. For example, his past wife and the new scientist are CLEARLY holding back information just for the benefit of stretching the story until the sweeps. Vorenus could clearly be asking a lot more questions from his past wife, like.. are you able to control this thing at all? Are you in the future as well? etc.. -
She claims to not know about Dan's family. If she is like Dan, you'd think she would be able to know something about him, the way he learns about people he visits in the past.

For real? Shit, you just ruined my day.Absolutely BEST new show. Well-written, well-acted, nice little ongoing plots, many elements of mystery, and SO many possibilities and NOBODY is watching! What the hell!NBC needs to get this show publicized stat. After the accident, the brother told him that since no one saw anyone driving the car when the accident happened, and since no one got out of the car, it was going to be written up as if he had forgot to set the parking brake. Please don't berate the show just because you weren't paying attention. I happen to love the show, and fear cancellation if more people don't give it a shot. After the hell I went through with Firefly being cancelled, I think if this gets pulled, I'll just wait to see if a new series makes it past season three before I start to watch, and catch up with DVDs.

Maybe it's time for NBC to acknowledge that perhaps it's not the show but the time-slot. How do the ratings compare to, say, The Black Donnelys, or Studio 60, both had this time and both got low ratings. NBC, just accept that pretty much anything you put on at this time will get its ass kicked by CSI Miami.

A show that's changed time slots and flourished?Regarding ER, I USED to watch it, years ago, but I literally know ONE character on the show now (Maura Tierney - yeeow!) and I couldn't care less about the rest of them. Tried to tune in a few weeks ago and got some politically correct lesson from the DailyKos on Iraq. Tired of politics and being preached to and SICK of hearing about Iraq from the True Believers.Won't watch Law & Order anymore for the same reason.I watch tv to be entertained plot, action, story, and characters with universal themes and messages. Not preached to, about, or against by the current crop of PC chaff.Don't get me wrong. If the politics are endemic to the story, setting, or characters, fine. But not every week. Not so one-sided. And certainly not with the self-righteousness of a tv evangelist.Dammit, what can we do to save Journeyman? Anybody got the ratings? Where's it stand in the grand scheme of tv-things?

I'd like to know.What happens when the past is "changed?" For instance, he talks to Gretchen (forgot the wife's name) about so-and-so dying on Thursday then saves the dude. What does she remember about the past conversation? We KNOW that things like "Finder Spyder" change. Obviously, people's memories change with it. Can't he access newspaper articles on Tuesday regarding someone's death, bury them (like with the ring) on Wednesday, dig 'em up on Thursday (after he's "saved" someone) and show them to Gretchen, his brother whomever? Would the buried article have changed?What happens if Dan fails to "save" someone?What happens if he has to let a bad thing happen? Not accidentally, like with calling out the guy's name in the first ep or planting the gun in the last ep, but actually letting something bad happen, i.e. assassination of Harvey Milk?What happens if he "saves" the wrong person?In other words, I'm interested in the metaphysical-ethical aspects of his "journey." How decisions are made and their ramifications on him and the present.

...Heroes at 8pm, Journeyman at 9pm, Chuck at 10pm. Heroes already has the fan base and could survive (providing the show gets its shit together quick) and they could play all previous Journeyman eps on the weekend before the change and hype the shit out of it. I don't know anyone who doesn't like it or love it.

It's not doing as well as Studio 60 did, but it's still slightly ahead of where Black Donnellys was, but the ratings have been slipping most every week (4.0 in the overalls, 2.5 in the 18-49 this week).

But the damage on the car is not consistent with someone forgetting their brake. If i remember correctly, the car hit a lamp post that was on the side walk. But the street where the car was is pretty flat (it looks like market street) that even if you forgot your brakes, it would not cause that much damage. Anyway, what will happen if he travel while he is in a meeting where people see him disappear. How will he explain that.

ElvisColeLives, Seinfeld used to get killed on Wednesday nights by Home Improvement when Cheers still had the middle Thursday slot. It didn't move to Thursdays until Spring 1993 when it was in its 4th season.

A couple of episodes back Livia told Dan that she used to travel before but it stopped when she met him. I assumed she meant she used to go back in time from his/her present but could it be that she's actually from the future and stayed in the past when she met him (in her past)? That would answer the question of where she is now, since she's dead in Dan's (our) present, and why she's not particularly forthcoming with information.

But she obviously went somewhere before the plane crash. I'd assumed she was in some sort of limbo, where she's traveling from time to time but no longer has a home base in the present like Dan, or something. Either that or she does have a life in the present and is just pretending to be dead (for whatever reason). I think it'd make a lot more sense if she's from the future though.

Great show, I really hope they do something ballsy with the Zodiac killer, the George Moscone/Harvey Milk assassinations and/or Jim Jones stuff. The Loma Prieta earthquake story was a bit of a disappointment, though each week is getting better, it seems. I just REALLY wish he and his wife would just tell Kellerman what is going on. It's not like it would be hard to prove.

thank you for the talkback, it the best of the bunch for this years new series, it's even overtaken heroes in my estimateion as this season ( so far ) is dire.
yes there are widser questions, i.e he's a gambler, he can make a bet in the past, and collect on it. it the first bloddy thing i'd do! but all in all its a really good show that keeps growing on you. I only started wathcing it, cuase of my fellow geeks on AICN sharing the love for this show. the postive reviews are not wrong. jump on the bandwagon! -

very cool episode. Best so far. The kid seeing him poof, the meeting with the professor, the meeting with his dad! Awesome stuff. Please please please NBC support this show like you supported the other low ratings show.
