London Film Fest! Mastidon Reviews ENCHANTED!

Published at:  Oct 22, 2007 3:58:49 AM CDT

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.

I’ve seen this one with my wife, and I think it’s a pretty safe bet that Disney’s going to make crazy bank with it when it opens next month. I didn’t love it, but I think it’s a must-see if only for the work by Amy Adams, who is going to walk away from this film and its inevitable sequels as a huge movie star, with a generation of little girls who want to be just like her.

They could certainly do worse.

Check out what Mastidon has to say about it:

ENCHANTED 4 1/2 Stars (Out of 5)
Directed by Kevin Lima
Starring Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey, James Marsden, Timothy Spall, and Susan Sarandon

Hi Guys,

Mastidon here with a review I myself am surprised I'm writing. I just finished attending the world premier of ENCHANTED. I must admit, I went into this film with VERY low expectations. A modern telling of SNOW WHITE? Are you serious? How could this be any good? Well, it is. So far I have seen a half-dozen movies here in London and this is the one I liked most. Quite simply put it is enchanting. Is it predictable and corny at times? Of course it is, its Disney. But its also charming, witty, and mesmerizing.

As well publicized, this film features both live action and animation. The last several Disney animation movies have been bad to say the least. This puts them back to where they belong. The great musical score from Alan Menken who did ALADDIN and THE LITTLE MERMAID doesn't hurt either. My personal favorite song being the one used in a scene in Central Park screams Oscar nomination.

James Marsden does a worthy job trading in his Cyclops uniform for a different type of tights. His voice is very good. I haven't seen HAIRSPRAY but heard his voice is also fine in that. I asked Alan Menken about that and he said that no doubles were used for either James or Amy but that it is their natural talent.

The script is well written to cater to both kids and adults. The film is as much a romantic comedy as it is a fairy-tale. Very funny with the audience laughing at over a dozen different places, A small warning to you conservative parents, there is some adult humor in there with a couple of scenes (girl in towel falling on guy) but nothing too much to worry about. The final scene may scare very small kids but I doubt it based on the ones I talked to after the show.

After the screening, I asked every parent I could find what they thought and how their kids reacted. All had the same answer - the kids stayed awake and followed the movie closely even true for one mother with her 3 & 8 year old girls. My only concern was would boys be as intrigued with this film as girls? Thanks to 2 lovely ladies on the Tube after the show, I now know the answer is yes. They had a mixture of 8 boys and girls sitting directly in front of them. None fidgeted or slept. No easy task as the film is just under 2 hours.

I was able to briefly interview several of the cast and crew from ENCHANTED before the screening. They also did an audience Q&A. A copy of that to follow soon.

ENCHANTED opens on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving making it the perfect treat to start the holiday season. Not only is this a great movie to take the whole family to see, but its also a perfect date movie guaranteed to give you a smile with a nice romantic touch.

From my London hotel room still under the spell of ENCHANTED....

Ciao,

-Mastidon

This film is beginning to sound like it might be worth seeing. When i first heard about it, I wasn't keen, although i thought it'd be cool to see 2D back again. bring it on.

    Saw this, really liked it

Not sure I'd go so far as 4.5 out of 5, but it's really good fun. Not sure I'd say that sequels are inevitable either - it's a perfectly nice little standalone film.

  • Disney sending itself up, reminded me of Elf in it's lampooning of what is ripe territory for a skewed fairytale comedy.

I was also at this screening, and boy was I surprised at how much I loved this film. That's two fantasy/childrens films which I came in with very low expecations and left the theatre humming a tune, having thoroughly enjoyed the experiences (the other being Stardust). I completely agree this will do very well. Having seen so many Disney films, this really captured the feel of a classic fairy tale, while giving it a modern spiin. Now when you hear "modern spin", please don't think of Shrek or Sharks Tale or Happily N'Ever After. There are no hip references to Britney or the Godfather. Just pure humor which hits at both kids and adults.

She's one of those rare girls that just sparkles on screen and makes me want to see anything she is in. I like the trailer for Enchanted as well.

    this is Snow White?

    by bloo

I got the impression it was an "original" type fairy tale not an existing onedon't get me wrong I love skewed fairy tales and when they mix things up, like in the musical "Once Upon a Mattress" where the Princess in the Pea story gets skwed and twisted and refrences Ella of the Cinders (aka Cinderella) but I really didn't think this was based on Snow whitesorry for the rant

Can't wait to see this movie!

    by spikebad666

It looks like it is going to be a new disney classic. And I'm just dying to see some 2D animation again. The only good 3D films are Pixar, and they should be the only ones worth seeing.

    yeah, 2D animation is awesome...

    by www.revyou.tv

...but I wish Disney would have done it themselves. Word is that the 2D in this film was done by an outside company. Personally, as awesome as this film might be, I'd gladly trade it for an entire 2D film that was on the same level as Disney renaissance flicks like LITTLE MERMAID, BEAUTY & THE BEAST and ALADDIN. I mean, it's like Pixar live action (which they're doing) - it just doesn't seem right.

Plus, let's not forget the live action/animated debacle that was COOL WORLD.

    Surprised

    by sapno_krei

I'm surprised by th egood reviews for this thing so far. As a Disney freak, I'm used to movies from the mouse house (particularly their live-action forays) getting lambasted sight unseen. When I heard about the concept way back when, I think I groaned out loud. the trailer wiped away some of that trepidation, I hope the film delivers.

meant Disney all by itself... I'd love for those days to come again. Growing up with that string of Little Mermaid-Beauty and the Beast- Aladdin-Lion King is bound to spoil anyone, I guess.

People love this movie. I wanted to.

    by bungion boy

But I just didn't. I wanted to sit in the theatre and be transported to a magical Disney world, as I have been by so many of their classic animated films. But the animation has a lame modern sensibility. It even has an Ogre clearly meant to remind us of Shrek. And Amy Adams would have seemed a lot more magical, if they didn't make New York into a ridiculous magical place. I wanted to see the New York that I live in reacting to the one magical princess that is transforming it. But in the film, New York is already full of weird, colorful characters. The scene in Central Park seems destined to turn into a musical number, because even before Adams gets there, everyone in the park is dressed in costumes, walking on stilts, holding balloons, smiling, etc. Where are the grumpy assholes whose hearts melt when a pretty girl starts singing? Where are the homeless people? I know this is a Disney movie but I was bored and it felt lazy. By making the romantic subplot so run of the mill, and showing scenes like costume balls going on at Tavern on the Green gave me an overdose of cute. I wanted to be transformed by the beautiful princess, but I was sad to see that I was the only one who was still living in the real world.

It's actually a pretty sharp parody

    by womb2doom

I enjoyed it thoroughly except for a slightly anti-climactic ending.Amy Adams is a revelation and James Marsden is emerging as one the most entertaining actors out there right now. Dr Grey couldn't have been more boring but perhaps that was the point. Quick question; how does he see out of those two piss-holes in the snow he calls eyes?

I don't think the animation (Disney doing 2-D again!!! JOY!!!) was done by an outside studio. John Lasseter rehired all the animators that were laid off when the 2-D wing shut down (or at least most of them), and the visual style of the animation looked just like the Disney films of the early 90's. Disney as it should be is back!!!

    by sir hilary bray

...with this movie. Neither did Disney Feature Animation. The hand-drawn animation was done by James Baxter and his studio (made up of LOTS of former Disney animator) and the CG by the Tippett Studio. Let's give credit where it's due.
