Cool News
Jon Vs. Conan In 2010??
I am – Hercules!!
Comedy Central announced Thursday that Jon Stewart is sticking with “The Daily Show” till 2010.
This means Stewart won’t be available to fill Conan O’Brien’s “Late Night” seat if O’Brien replaces Leno at “The Tonight Show” on schedule in 2009.
It also means that Stewart, who hosts the Oscars again early next year, will be available to take over CBS’ “Late Show” should David Letterman decide not to renew his current contract, which runs out in 2010.
Is this good news for Carson Daly? Bad news for Craig Ferguson?
Of course, if NBC elects to pay a huge penalty payment to O'Brien and keep Leno (who inexplicably gets better ratings than all of them), Stewart and O'Brien both might find themselves in contention to take over Letterman's desk. (A different type of “Jon Vs. Conan”!)
So many variables!
Supplemental factoid. If Conan does take over “The Tonight Show,” it looks like he won’t be getting the stage Leno now inhabits; NBC is selling that studio along with a good part of the network’s longtime headquarters in Burbank. A stage on the nearby Universal Studios lot is being prepared for “The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien.”

And yes, O'B *should* move the show to NY! or Dubuque... it's kind of a toss up.
-
Leno doesn't use Johnny's old stage. He did at the beginning of his run, but later moved to a different stage so that the audience could be right up close for his monologues, replicating the comedy clubs that he's used to. Johnny preferred to have the crowd much further away. The old Tonight Show stage is used for all kind of other shows (including "The Weakest Link" when it was on), but there's a permanent star on the floor showing where Johnny's desk was located.
-
What happens to Stephen Colbert? He'd be the best person to take over any show!
-
... Jon Stewart would leave the Daily Show to FOLLOW Conan O'Brien. Your idea of him taking over from Letterman is brilliant though.
-
Jon Stewart vs. Conan O'Brien...they are BOTH hilarious, you win watching either one imo.
-
Guess all those other sites reporting that Universal has dropped Barbarella aren't good close personal friends of Robert Rodriguez. Shame when this site lets their Hollywood friendships interfere with reporting the NEWS.

I can't stand Carson Daily.
-
...he's 'Carlos Mencia' unfunny. Hell, he's 'Jay Leno' unfunny!!
-
Two different comedic styles, two different talk shows, different demographics etc. Stewart is better suited to sticking with biting commentary on cable. The self deprecating, off beat, non-offensive style of Conan is better for the "general audience" of network TV.
-
He better not benefit in any way when Conan moves to "Tonight."
-
Colbert told fan fic writers to "get ready" when he appeared on the show. Slashy!
-
If Jon Stewart takes over for Letterman I will kill myself. Totally different levels of humor. That means you will have two unfunny douche bags competing while the people who aren't into stoner jokes will be left with nothing to watch.
Maybe Fox News will move Red Eye up so I can watch that.(doubt it)...
God I hate today's youth and their subhuman humor.
-
HEAR THE LAMENTATION OF DA WOMEN.
Oh... Sorry. Wrong Conan. -
If there was a God this tragedy wouldn't occur. That and the Holocaust. Why would he create a race of people who were so damn stupid? Anyway, there are few things in this world as painfully unfunny as Jay Leno. Maybe the Holocaust is one, but after that I'm drawing a blank.
-
Lento appeals to an older audience. Well, they don't get much older than eternal.
-
You knew what I meant!
-
Conan is brilliant, but not right for the Tonight show. Zucker made this mismanuever around the same time he paid big bucks to bring Meredith Viera to Today. That also hasn't panned out.
Think what you want of Jay, but Tonight makes TONS OF DOLLARS for NBC/Universal. Jay wasn't dying to get off tonight, but he agreed because they didn't want to lose Conan. Well, you might just see them stick with Jay and stick it to Conan, even though the penalty would be $40 million. That's only 1/2 year of profits for Tonight for one year.
Conan? Jon? I think you might be seeing Jay in his chair far beyond 2010. -
That's why he is going to take over the Tonight Show and Leno isn't going to get a younger audience before 2009. Leno will go to another network, he doesn't like that he's being forced out. Ferguson doesn't want a bigger show than the one he has and Fallon or someone else gets Conan's spot, not Carson. I hope Stewart isn't Letterman's replacement, I liked Kilborn's Daily Show more than Stewart's.
-
It ain't gonna happen, but his guest hosting gig a few years back was fantastic.
-
him and that other retard
-
I don't think they want Tonight to skew younger... That's the problem with replacing Jay with Conan. Tonight is watched by "the heartland." They like Jay's gentle style and straight-forward humor.
Conan on Tonight? I don't know what they're thinking... Come to think of it, you don't fuck with the Tonight Show. I think GE has let Zucker play with his toys, but is going to quietly tell him he won't be mucking with their cash cow when 2009 comes around. -
So say we all.
-
"How evil could *this* face be?"
NBC is doing a brilliant job of priming the pump for Kristen Bell's arrival. And they're getting an actress whose talent is second to only a few. -

Steward thinks adding "ehhhhhhhhh" to all of his non-punchlines will instantly turn them into punchlines and be hilarious.
-
Worst mistake NBC, CBS, or any network could make is giving that talentless douche a talk show. He is NOT funny AT ALL. How he has a career in showbiz - doing comedy no less - is beyond me. Must have spent a few nights at the Geffen mansion...
-
No new TV shows except what they've got in the can (which is not much).
Only reality TV and news. Discuss. -
One of the Tonight Show staffers showed me around. Apparently, Conan was never going to use Leno's stage. His plan was the use Carson's old one, which fits about 150 more people than Lenos and currently houses Entertainment Tonight.

-
I say again: Where, When? Dammit Dammit Dammit
-
I think Letterman wants Stewart to take over his spot and Stewart wants it as well. Sort of a Carson / Letterman vibe whenever Stewart is a guest on Letterman's show. I hope he doesnt retire in 2010 though, it's consistently been my favorite show for over 10 years. Whereas Conan has gone progressively downhill, I think he's downright annoying now. Conan's humor/sketches have gone from quirky random to downright weird creepy or simply annoying.
-
Reason for the delay, perhaps - they're prepping an HD-DVD version???

i know this will sound all nitpicky but... the star on the floor isn't to point out where his desk was, its where he stood to do his monologues.

by freakemovie
That's what the rumors have been at least...Entertainment Weekly ran a story on their website about it a few weeks ago. It makes sense, since he's guest-hosted for late night hosts before. And I know everybody on these boards hate him, but he has the right kind of persona for the job.

Leno gets better rtating because he is on the West coast!
by captain internet sellout
Conan and Letterman have a very difficult time getting the top notch guests on a regular basis because they aren't in Hollywood. Letterman wanted to move to LA at one point but felt obligated to stay in New York. What is amazing is that Letterman is as close as he is in the ratings under the circumstances.. same with Conan. If leno was one the East coast and couldn't get all those top notch guests, he would have been canclled in the very beginning.

...but I like Leno much more. Why does Hollywood dislike Leno. There is a reason that Leno's ratings are so high week after week, year after year. ... ... ... .... .... ... ... ... Conan is great ... for his time slot. Leno is far more clean and, well, funny. His monologue is the true successor to Johnny Carson. So if I rank them, I prefer Leno, Conan, Letterman, the British guy, and the John Stewart.
-
You're all gonna think I'm nuts but just what if...Leno leaves, but instead of Conan taking over the Tonight Show they go with...John Goodman! I mean, what's that guy doing? And "the heartland" loves him! I'm not gonna say it's a lock or anything cuz it's nuts but think about it.
-
Ha! Thanks for that memory Herc. We're getting old though. That was ages ago.
-
...than Conan on the Tonight Show. Conan is far too eccentric for the Tonight Show crowd. Of course, I think that Jay Leno is, by far, the best candidate to replace Jay Leno. Letterman is stale. Conan is funny but strange and irreverant. John Stewart is terribly overrated. Craig Ferguson is too bland. Craig Kilburn is ... still alive? I just think that NBC is sacrificing too much by not extending Leno for another five years. Conan's hair (and his welcome) will have fallen out by then.
-

-
would be about the next John Safran show. I guess I should have realized the spelling was different. Did "vs God" ever get a talkback?
-
His Tonight Show is the talk show equivalent of "Deal or No Deal". The secret to his success is that he takes bits other people have done better, waters them down so that a moron could understand them, and then he explains them after that...because his audience isn't quite at moron level. Then he gives the bit a fancy new title that suggests the bit is unique to his show.

Conan has always been Letterman's boy. the two are friends unlike Jay and Conan.

Conan can change his style for a primetime audience
by captain internet sellout
If Conan could host the Emmys as successfully as he did there's no reason he won't be able to adjust to Leno's audience..
And people saying Conan's hair is too crazy... please.. at least Conan doesn't have a speech impediment and doesn't have a birth defect on his face -- Leno's freakish chin. Leno is AWFUL.. his show has the production value of an infomercial. We are going to realize what we were missing with Leno when Conan takes over. Conan's going to blow the roof off the dump.
-
Dude, read the news. Barbarella is being shopped to other studios. Another possibility - independent finance. The budget though, at $82m, is HUGE for a RR project, esp. given that Rose hasn't proven she can open big (and I mean theatrically, you dirty-minded little snots). And while I loved Planet Terror, and we all know the whole Grindhouse thing was just a big goof for a certain kind of geek, and therefore it's not fair to hold that against RR or Rose or anyone else, bean counters look only at numbers. So at $82m, Uni got cold feet.

-
Letterman was good in his prime. Now he has occasionally flashes of funny in between the repeated stale comedy bits (will it float?, psycho wardrobe designer, Gerard Mulligan appearances--not funny), ogling every half-decent looking actress that guests, and kissing the asses of his old nemeses. Leno is a nice guy, but his show acts as Vanilla-flavored sleeping pills for the older set who watch him in bed and set the TV to turn itself off after the it ends. Conan has his moments, with some of the bits, but he has to have *his* moments much too often when talking to his guests. Talk of Daly and Fallon being groomed as the next generation only shows how bleak the future is.

What's going to happen to Jon Stewart if a democratic president
by captain internet sellout
What will John Stewart have to talk about if Bush or another Republiucan isn't president?
Considering Jon Stewart is more important than any Democratic politician, I feel the Democrats will subconsciously throw the election to prevent losing him.. the only other alternative would be if John Stewart ran for President... -
Letterman has made some comments that they will have to take the show from him when he's dead.. he desperately wanted to move from latelate night to the 11pm slot.. I don't think he wants to even think about retirement. And Letterman's mom is like 90 and still going strong. Who knows how much longer Letterman could go.
-
Why do I get the feeling you get YOUR news from FOX News? Then jack off every time O'Reilly says something profoundly moronic.
-
But I can't imagine anyone but him doing the Daily Show. And to whoever said Stewart won't have anything to do with a Democratic President, I would like to remind you that the show was damn funny with Clinton in office. They don't just skewer Republicans, they skewer Government idiocy, and there's plenty of that on both sides.
-
"They only get their news from these dolts." It seems more like the show is better if one is already paying attention to the news. They are comedians, not journalists. And I don't think anyone has ever described me as "preppy."
-
Have you ever worn a shirt with an embroidered animal on the front? Mesh shoes? Your collar up?

THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH CONAN O'BRIEN, THE LATE SHOW WITH JON STEWART & LATE NIGHT WITH JIMMY FALLON. And to really stick it to the heartland, Hillary will be President. I feel a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.
-
He's far too good for LA, trust me I live there.
-
Surely he'll play into the mix somehow?
-
Its a possiblity, although not one that i'd like to see

-

(I'm joking. It was a joke. Don Rickles would be laughing. Hockey Puck.) -
or Colbert, to replace Conan (though I like Colbert where he is). Conan's Tonight Show should be in NY city.
-
On Comedy Central, he is able to get away with being as subversive as he is because an audience of a million or so people is a good draw (forgive me if my figures are a little off; I don't know where I could look up the Daily Show's ratings) and he doesn't have to try to play to a big crowd. My understanding is that Comedy Central is *extremely* open and supportive as networks go, and because he is the biggest fish in their little pond, they let him do the show his way.
Do you realize what would happen if he took his show to a major network? CBS would press its iron thumb down on him, and he would be forced to give up a lot of what makes the show truly unique. One thing I love about the Daily Show now is that the interviews are usually so interesting: authors of political books, news personalities, occasionally a major politician. Sure, every once in a while the guest is an actor pimping a movie, but even then it's usually either someone doing a pretty weighty, intellectual movie, or one of Jon's comedian buddies from the old days (which we can forgive him for).
But if you look at the major networks' talk shows, the second half hour is just a giant commercial for whatever movie some smug, douchebag actor is in, and the host has to act like it's not just a big piece of shit, and that this interview circuit where the host asks a printed set of questions that the actor's handler gave him, and the actor tells the same bullshit story that he's told five times that week, isn't just a lot of phony jerking off. Jon Stewart hates all that phoniness, and you can tell. The other night when Ben Affleck was on his show to promote Gone Baby Gone, that was half of what they talked about: "Isn't this press circuit process bullshit?" That would be every night if he took his show to CBS. They would neuter him.
Isn't that basically what has happened to Dave Letterman? He could be the most subversive guy in the world, making fun of the whole process, the network, the guests, etc., when he was on NBC at 12:30, but CBS has made him calm that down, and you can tell now he doesn't give a shit about the show, he's just doing it for the money. Every once in a while that sly little evil edge will come out (if you saw the interview the other night where he peppered Paris Hilton with questions about being in jail until she almost cried, you saw the real Dave poke his head out for eight minutes).
I wouldn't begrudge Jon Stewart if CBS waved tens of millions of dollars in his face and he took it. That would be hard to turn down. But right now, I like him exactly where he is. If he's going to move, here's a bold idea: let him do the Daily Show, exactly as it is, making fun of the news using fake correspondents and other channels' video footage--as the CBS news. -
Retired and now the Late Late shows ratings are in free fall. Byrnes tenure was 1962 - 1998. Hard act to follow. But Kenny is so stiff. Hence his nick pat the plank kenny. Spare a thought for Jonathan Ross who after signing a deal worth 18 million for three years like others in the BBC feel they no longer have a future. ITV didnt come out smelling like roses. For those who dont know. ITV and other companies ran competitions, encouraging people to phone in. The winners were pre-selected. The latest Casulties are Ant and dec. Ant and Dec are two geordie Twats, who are the most successfull duo since Morecambe and Wise to appear on Itv. by elvis cole lives
It's explicable how Leno gets better ratings. More people watch him than watch the others.See how easy that was? Explicable as hell. Now, why do more people watch? Sure, he's more milquetoast, but he's also less caustic, less abrasive, and less arrogant. Leno's much more "middle America" than any of the others.Leno also doesn't appear to look down on his audience (or potential audience) as the others do at times.See? Even the "more audience" is explicable.

Carson Reruns>Leno>Conan>Letterman>Ferguson>Stewart>ALL ELSE
by ccchhhrrriiisssm
Why do people like to dish Leno? Carson made a great choice by choosing Leno to take over. There is a reason that Leno (and his ratings) are so great: He inherited a time-tested formula from Johnny Carson. Conan will either have to adapt his comedy into Carson's formula, or I will start watching Nightline.
-
I don't think they are even friends. Carson and Letterman, however, have remained friends after all that brewhaha that went down in the early 90's.
-
I don't see the huge deal of this. Yes, Comedy Central is a smaller network, butarguably Stewart has helped elevate to a much, much bigger entity. His placement on the network also isn't hampering in regard to exposure, and awards, so I don't see how him changing networks is really going to make a difference, UNLESS, he was fighting over a spot against Conan, which I sincerely doubt will happen. I'd much prefer to see someone who doesn't already have huge exposure take over Letterman's spot, such as Michael Ian Black, or someone like that. Stewart moving to CBS would also surely fuck up his structure, extending it to an hour, and probably making him get more "relevant" guests.
-
proves that mediocrity rules.

I someone who saw both men on MSNBC before it was turned into a

digital channel in Ireland. Leno was funny but then he stopped doing those characters and became less fun and quick. Then Ed hall left and the show died. O'brien is a terrible interviewer. but the run up to his interviews were funny sometimes. The stuff with walker texas ranger, that was funny.
-
Just like it sucked whenever he filled in for Snyder. His MTV show was funny, but that was like 20 years ago. Jon Stewart is not hip. Stewart without his show format will start strong and then nose-dive quickly. If CBS was smart, they would get The Daily Show, the way ABC got Politically Incorrect. I don't think Comedy Central would part with it though. Stewart hosting a talk show would be like taking the Daily Show and removing the good parts. Stewart lucked into a pre-fabricated show that was already running well. The correspondent segments have always been the best part of the show, and they probably always will be.

Beware the curse of the Chevy Chase show. Leno will go to daytime.

Carson wanted Letterman, and probably would have liked Shandling over Leno. From there, Leno didn't thank Carson on his first night of the show because he is a total asshole. He blamed it on his manager, as if his manager had a gun to his head.bantha, Johnny Carson has been dead for quite a few years.

He even told Dave at one point that if they didn't offer it to him he should move on.

Just because he does political humor he's better than everyone else combined?

Have any of you really watched Ferguson's show? Instead of shooting off pre-canned one-liners, Craig opens with an ACTUAL monologue, either a story from his life or the news, with those little pop culture zingers woven into the speech instead of recited one by one like a check list. Oh yeah, and he's effin' hilarious. On top of that, besides his various skits being consistently funny, his interview skills are top-notch; actors seem incredibly comfortable with him, establishing a quick rapport that helps elevate the interview from your standard EPK bullshit. All this to say, he's excellent, and certainly a far better candidate than Conan for late night primetime. Alas, someone above me said it best, Ferguson probably prefers his smaller, intimate audience, which probably contributes to his more laid-back demeanor. Ah, well. Yes, this post was ultimately useless, but I'm stuck at work on a Saturday, what can you do?

-
I'll concede, the Prince Charles thing is the weakest part of his show. But that's as low as it gets, pretty much everything else is gold. I'd love to see him take over for Letterman in 2010. But that's just me.
-

-
NBC has done a lot of stupid things, but hyping K-Bell's debut on Heroes hasn't been one of them. Dana White (UFC bossman) and Vince McMahon should take notes.
-
Conan and Letterman. I am sorry they have all been on too long and though I'll watch them. Jimmy Kimmel in my mind has been getting a hell of a lot better. I think right now he is doing the best monologue, and unnecessary censorship is the funniest thing out of all these shows combined. As for Stewart I think that he has gotten to nice, plus I hate how his show and Colbert are all political just bores me. Fucking Colbert is horrible, he is just a dick and I really do not understand how he is soo popular you all would eat his poop given the chance?? And I am from Charleston. Also why no love for Spike Feresten?? I know I am probably the only one on this site who watched him, but I think if Conan takes Leno I say Spike takes Conan's spot, his show sucks but he admits it and I think he is a lot like Conan. And the only reason to ever watch Carson is because sometimes he has some bad ass music performances, I always DVR and it though so I don't have to hear him say a word. What would be awesome is Kimmel takes over for Leno, Conan Stays and Spike gets Carson's show.
-
No one knows who she is, but they treat it like the second coming. It baffles me. And apparently this is the place to discuss Heroes now.
-
Just saying.
I preferred him much more on the Daily Show, and Craig Ferguson is just unfunny. -

he treated the show more like a fake news show than a traditional talk show. With that said, I don't want him back. Forward, not backward is the way to go. I heard Michael Ian Black hosting some NPR show and I think he could be a good fake news guy.

Mebbe? ;)
-
Lettermen- a vicious liberal hack. His show was unfunny 20 years ago. Carson knew it. That's why Dave didn't get the job! Jon Stewart---runs a small comedy show on a small cable network. No one watches the Academy Awards. Stewart--rating disaster on a real network.

Let me guess, you probably thought the Daily Show rip-off that Fox News put on was great and that Dennis Miller is funnier now that he's conservative. Must suck.
-
I'm not liberal or republican. I don't judge people based on fake parties created by human beings to make themselves seem more important or to help them gain power. No sir. I don't like Jon Stewart's show because it receives too much unconditional love for a show that's so mediocre.

Bring back Craig Kilborne. Conan is smart, but not funny.
by screamingpenis
Conan is a writer. All he has is a self-depricating shtick which gets stale after a while. He is unable to step into serious interview mode like Letterman and Carson. Leno, on the other hand, just stops talking for minutes at a time and lobs softball questions at his guests. Kilborne was 100 times more clever and original. He must have really pissed someone off at CBS. I don't buy this whole leaving under his own accord thing.
-
Leno---beats letterman---EVERY night. hmmmm. imagine that.
COnan has it made---if Leno back s out of retirement or if they go elsewhere---he makes a tidy sum. He'll do fine on the tonight show---same bashing for leno years ago by the in the know crowd. Back then it wasn't Jon Stewart of course....All the freaks like Arsenio....stewart arsenio kilborne---all the same-- -
On the few times I watch Conan's show (to see a specific guest) he always finds a way to turn the conversation to be about him, and the show's producers even cut to full screen shots of ONLY Conan during the interviews. Or he has a foot switch that he can stomp behind the desk to force a close-up on himself.Really hard to stomach that kinda crap....
-
if only for his ability to drive the right-wingbats into suicidal bouts of depression.
-
he is perfectly fine where he is. but he made the daily show into a fake-news and politics show, and i can't imagine that lasting on network television. Jon would have to pander to big-name celebs and make jokes that aren't about politicians... which for him, is impossible.
it'll be interesting what happens in 2010, but I don't feel that Stewart is network TV friendly. I mean, he doesn't even throw shit off the tops of buildings, and he doesnt have pimp-robots. i mean, come on Jon, you aren't even trying!!! -

It doesn't matter, Conan's rating are going to suck at 11:30pm
by darth bauer
I like Conan a lot, but Letterman is going to destroy him. Conan's show works at 12:30am. It's not going to be his fault, it's NBC's fault for thinking he can draw that big an audience at 11:30pm vs. Dave. Conan has about 10 little nuances that he does that after a while are really annoying and are really repetitive. After a few weeks he's going to lose viewers just because those hour-earlier viewers are going to think it's dumb. Stuff like "Hey babies" in that weird voice, and the shaking his hips to the dun-da-da-dun beat is going to be irritating to some people. I don't blame NBC for trying to get Leno to sign on for a few more years. Leno is a sure thing. He's safe and doesn't have to be quirky. Conan is the opposite. And NBC is going to lose by giving him The Tonight Show. I know you can say Letterman is the same way as Conan. To a point you'd be right. BUT if you put Conan vs. Dave, Letterman would be the safe one there.
-
...instead of post-Leno Tonight Show.

there are no real celebrities anymore, so who needs the late night talk shows? Where are the celebrities with careers lasting more than 5-10 years? Where's the new Robert DeNiro,Henry Fonda,Marlon Brando,James Stewart, Al Pacino,Laurence Olivier,Jack Nicholson, rather than this continuous line of idiots selling their latest project and throwing in some unamusing anecdote that they are required to spew out so it try's not to come across as nothing more than an infomercial. there is no real music anymore, so why bring in the crap music because you feel you have to complete the formula? Where's the station bringing you the hits of the 90's? It doesn't exist because they wouldn't have enough material to last more than a few days. Now we have celbrity whores, bands you've never heard of and if you miss their appearance on that show you'll never hear of them again, but rest well knowing you haven't miss anything. You rent movies through the mail and 8 out of 10 times you're glad you waited and it just reinforces that you are'nt going to pay a ridiculous amount of money to see some crap movie and lose 2 hours of your life anymore. You feel less screwed if you've only spent a dollar to rent it and can FF through it if it sucks. The same reason you don't spend 15 bucks on cd's to get 2 good songs and 8 crap ones. People are tired of being screwed out of their money. wait a minute...what was this post about??? Hallelujah...Holy Shit!!! Where's the Tylenol?
-
The Daily show has made me laugh.---
Conan & Letterman have made me smile. ---
Leno is like watching paint dry. Sometime I even get annoyed because the jokes are so bad. How bad does comedy have to suck to make somebody angry? -
....I am left wondering whether they are talking about Carson Daly or Johnny Carson. Talk about apples and oranges!!! hehehehe
-
As much as I like his show, which is arguably the best in late night, The Tonight Show (and its slot) will seem like damaged goods with a replacement for Jay and the show afterwards will have no guarantee of success.
NBC is lucky they have two hit shows in those slots considering how badly things went after Cason's departure. Anyone else read 'The Late Shift' or watch the movie? -
Ironically Carson's last name is Daly. Pronounced Daily, as in I receive Carson on a daily basis. Which is exactly what I don't want!
-
with Gay byrne. never, have I been as disappointed in all the years watching gay byrne as I was when she appeared on his show. She was by some mile the biggest Star he had on his show at that time, it was around the time of that movie she did with Thandie Newton, the beloved I think it was called. The movie bombed. Think whatever you like about her, good or ill. She had an Horrific upbringing. she is an example of rags to riches.. anyhoo. The woman was as cold as ice on and gave off a permafrost vibe which killed the interview stone dead.
-
There are no real celebs anymore. Just a bunch of brainless, no talent idiots whom we wont remember in 20 years or. Last night I watched Parkinson. The last great british chat show host of them all. His line up was insteresting, Ozzy's wife Sharon , Sophie Dahl and Joan Rivers who was on fine form and diana Krall. After this series of parkinson, you will never see anything like that line up again. Unless you watch the sycophantic and nauseating Jonathan Ross. Pass me the sick bag. Though the ross and ramsay ones moments are great fun. Ross talking about his sex life is irritating. The show that suprised me more was the Charlotte Church show. if they can knocj off the theme tune nonsense at the start and sharpen up her comedy skill. They might be on to something. the one thing that Irish chat shows did suffer from is what I call rotating guest syndrome. I lost count of the amount of times I heard Joanna Lumley tell the different hosts the same ghost story while she was plugging her book. after a while I began to think, stop your making this up.
-
Because it would take a God-like omniscience to have a correct measure of the amount of balls Seacrest sucked this year.
-
Moving the show to LA would be an insult.

He's brilliant.
-
..in all the networks..woof woof..
-
... That Dennis Miller is a shitstain, then you can have whoever the hell you want on the Tonight Show. I honestly like'em all. Variety is what TV always needs, and these guys deliver it.
-
No one has ever come close to surpassing Letterman's Late Night run. Dave had a dry spell for a while after he moved networks, but I gotta say that his show lately is inspired and the funniest of the bunch.
Long live Letterman, the KING of Latenight TV.

Forget talk shows. Most TV in general sucks ass anyway as of la
by pizza the hut
How many mindless talk shows with boring hosts do we really need?... How many entertainment news shows about Brittney Spears?... How many lame reality TV shows?... How many crime dramas?... How many CSI-type shows?... How many sets that look like "Who Wants to be a Millionaire"?... How many infomercials, court case shows, rap videos, news programs, etc?... I miss the days when TV was actually entertaining, back when comedy shows were not a chore to watch, every actor didn't look like a punk, knew how to truly act their roles, and didn't need an overkill of special effects to save their piss-poor performance. Where have all of the great entertainers gone? When will there ever be another Dean Martin or Frank Sinatra, men that were too cool for words? Why are most shows now so cold looking, poorly cast, heartless, and without giving me any reason to care at all? Why does everything have to be "re-imagined"? The list goes on...
-
and stick with a show and be constantly dismissive all the time. Then yeah all tv sucks. but that aint true.
-
Tonight Show, Late Night, Poker After Dark. He'll still be the only show I watch... Whatever happened to Kilborn???
-
I unplugged my TV over a year ago and haven't once felt like channel surfing. Not one single time have that thought entered my mind. I watch movies on dvd instead. Much better. Movies come to a conclusion, TV shows only go on and on and on forever and nothing ever happens.
-
what is it with you dumb right wing cunts?
-
...before he became W's butt buddy. Does anybody remember his pre-HBO syndicated show? It was pretty funny. Right now I'd say Colbert is doing the funniest show followed by Stewart and Letterman. The Daily Show has definitely been hurt with the loss of Rob Cordry and Ed Helms.
-
moving the show to LA would be an insult...to LAso stay IN New York, and get OFF the TV, wouldja?

irish people have for the best part 20 years. and like most irish people iwas glued to my tv set as Jack Charlton brought the Irish team to World Cup quarter Finals on two occasions. We watched the scenes of jubiliation on O'Connell and in the Pheonix Park. Then Charlton stood down and was replaced by Mick MCarthy. Who brought the Irish team to its third World Cup Quarter final. Victory against the Spanish would have meant that for the first time we would have been in to the semi. This was the 2002 World Cup which was dominated by the Row in Saipan. Roy Keane Walked out after he couldnt take the bad preparation anymore. McCarthy Left Wolverhampton Wanderers. He felt betrayed by the FAI. And Kerr, his replacement. was shown the door after 2 years. He was replaced by Stephen Staunton, managerial Career ends in ruins after a dull and limp exit from the Euro 2008 campaign. During the feeble exercise, the fai(football Association of Ireland) used Sir Bobby Robson as punching bag, when they put him on the Irish airwaves. I have never seen anything like what happened on Wednesday night in Croke park when the entire team were booed and staunton was booed and jeered. Robbie Keane went on Irish tv on friday to say that the media were to blame. When has robbie keane ever stood up to the mark. The Soccer talkbackers in the Crowd and the media talkbackers in the tabloid press have poured vitriol over the Staunton era for the pass to years. in ye olde times that was called the stocks. Filmmakers and tarantino is a good example, may wonder if their career is now worth persuing. tarantino blames the fans who didnt turn out. but he also thinks that may Grindhouse was a bad idea. Modern sport like Showbis is ruthless. If you dont do well. you are gone and forgotten pretty. I think Stephen Staunton was a decent guy, who had a great career as on field general but was put into horrible position by his friend, john Delaney the Chief Exec of the Football association of Ireland. But then there are the stories of Bullying and Stauntons Belittling of younger players. Soccer matches, especially Ireland games under Staunton are bit like movies. Frustrating to watch, baffling and times even bewildering. frequently entertaining and with more then a few head-scrathing moments. Like, last wednesday Staunton Played Joey O brien out of position, when he should have played him at.

this thread is pretty funny. Letterman is awesome, last of a dying breed. Conan, alright. Stewart, good broadcaster, funny. Carson, a joke. Ummm yea!
-
Lately with Dave he's getting lost and not remembering who his guest's are or just losing his train of thought.Paul frequently has to help him over these rough patches. He still gets interesting guests and is enough of "Old Dave" to make it worthwhile to watch but I'm worried about the guy.Maybe it's his meds. Those "Johnny Twain" bits are gold along with Great Moments in Presidential Speeches.
And Conan is the worst interviewer as has been previusly mentioned with him constantly turning the conversation back to himself.I really can't watch him anymore.Craig Ferguson is the best interviewer of the bunch (along with Stewart) but his skits are weak and seem like they go forever. -

CONAN WILL FLOP AT 11:30 / DAVE WINS / LENO SUCKS / CRAIG IS COO
by thedohdoh
Man, I used to really dig Conan's show, but he's hurting. His entire schtick is based on 1) being a strange little kid 2) not being successful. He's becoming the PeeWeeHerman of Late Night Talk and it's sort of scary. He's grown and has a kid and wears way too much makeup. And he's a multimillionaire but still acts like he does a show from a box. What gives? He can't grow up. The Peter Pan Factor. He'll scare the older viewers away and the younger viewers will stick around for the 12:30 host or go to Kimmel. Everyone's leaving out Kimmel, and while his show is trite, he will definitely have the advantage over Conan. Dave is just waiting for Leno to leave so he can ramsack the ratings for a few years and get his revenge. NBC is fucking up severely by getting rid of Leno. He's a huge money maker and they are dissing him for Conan, who's anything but a sure thing. Word is Leno's going to Fox. Imagine that? That's like WW3. But Leno is the worst thing to happen to Late Night TV. Craig Ferguson is a laid back dude and he's definitely one of the more original hosts around. His skits are corny, but so what. That's sort of the charm. He doesn't give a shit. He'd never take the plunge to Dave's Spot, he'd never fit. But by being cool without being "college" like Conan, he actually makes it work. Carson Daily is a little cokehead idiot who will never move up in rank or ratings. The dude is like the rich son who waits for his dad to die but gets shut out of all the money. Fuck him. Pansy. Jon Stewart is whatever. It'd be good to have him around, being that these fuckers last forever. Jon Stewart in 2020. K. BUT THE KEY TO SUCCESS FOR CONAN IS TO REALLY HAVE A SIDE KICK AGAIN. HOW GREAT WOULD IT BE IF TRACY MORGAN BECAME THE NEW ANDY?? Conan doesn't work as well by himself, so it'd be great for when he takes Leno's spot to have his McManhon (sic). THINK ABOUT THAT. Same goes for any host. I think Dave could use a sidekick besides Paul to bring something new to the show. Nobody's going to knock the old man for bringing in some funny couch warmer. Dave's got a kid and a moderately healthy ticker = he can do whatever the fuck he wants. Long live Letterman. I can take or leave the rest of em.

Yay! My first last post in a talkback! No applause, please. Just throw money.

NBC had done the right thing in the first place and let Letterman take over for Carson when he left. I still cannot understand that move.
-
I gotta agree with everyone about Conan. He just clearly doesn't give a shit anymore. It used to be cool to see an insecure nerd make it on a late night show. Now, he's successful and it just feels beneath him.

Bright and early posting of the Heroes talkback tomorrow?

Classic, LMFAO screen name. Well done.

That was what everyone expected they'd do. It permanently ruined the relationship between Letterman and NBC, and made any conciliation with him a non-option for the network. The smart move would have been moving Letterman to the Tonight Show and giving Leno a show in Letterman's slot which they could have propped up with lead in ratings.
They offered Letterman a one year contract (kind of like the Yankees with Torre) which could have kept him on ice in case Leno failed. He said 'screw you' called down the fury of Mike Ovitz and jumped to CBS. He beat Leno in the ratings for quite a while too. The real surprise was Conan, who really did suck originally, coming into his own with what has to be the funniest show in late night. NBC is lucky they didn't lose both shows. -
I have an idea, Why dont the owners put up a password screen saying from now on anybody from the UK and outside America can get stuffed cause this is an american site for american media.
-
I'll take old Johnny Carson over all of them. But, would have to go with Conan over Leno. Letterman over Leno, and Jon Stewart...it's hard to say. Leno's my least favorite out of all those. That said, nobody tops Johnny Carson!
-
Thus, I will proudly join the next Dr.Who talkback.

Honestly, remember Craig Kilbourn? No? Me neither. A network might be able to offer Stewart some extra cash, but I sort of doubt they'd be able to offer the same creative atmosphere in regards to the political humor. I'm glad Stewart is staying put.
Leno is someone who definitely should not stay put. Conan deserves the 11:30 spot about a billion times more than Leno. He's by far the funniest host on the networks. -
Apparently he's getting serious second thoughts as the day approaches for him to hand over The Tonight Show over to Conan.
-
i hope this guy is as funny as people say "back in the day" but man are his monologues just black holes of old-room stench. leno may have stale skits and crappy interviwiewing, his standup roots tear it up on the monologues.
-
...that Chris Matthews interview Jon did?
I love me some Jon Stewart but that kind of interview proves he needs to stay on Comedy Central. -
Gotta love those Monica Lewinsky jokes. In 2007.

If I recall, when Stewart took over for Kilborn he revamped the format into the news parody it is now. Kilborn was doing 'entertainment news' jokes like Spade is now. The focus is different.

Yes. It takes more guts to do political humor. You risk alienating your audience much more with that than at poking fun at entertainment celebrities. -
interviewed O' brien. You needed a spatula to scrape the permafrost off the Tv. Leno doesnt like him. and leno probably feels now that it will be a cold day before o' brien gets his keester in Leno's chair. Leno will get an extension. The day that leno the comedian died was when he shed all the characters and the departure of Ed hall probably hastented the day.
-
Dude, that was one of the most nicely articulated responses I have ever seen on AintItCoolNews.
....
I must admit I'm surprised to see the fractured loyalties for TV talk show hosts/comedians. I agree with pretty much everything thing that has been said in this discussion. But it seems there is nothing approaching a consensus on who is THE BEST at what is clearly a very difficult and demanding job. Frankly, I'm surprised anyone would want such a gig. -
Wannabes--but I gotta say that Comedy Central lets him do the content that fits him so well, and he probably could not do 75% of it on The Late Show. So I will vote for The Daily Show to Reign Supreme with Jon at the desk for decades to come.

My choice for late night watchin', when I feel like it...
by crusherjen
...is Craig Ferguson. I'm with TheFutureDirector on this one, definitely. While I'm not always wowed by the skits, Craig's got a gift for talking to people that's like no one else out there. I love the monologues, which zing back and forth between the theme of the day, personal anecdotes, and pop-culture comments, which is far better than the same old stale celebrity jokes getting recycled over and over for a week. If he comes off as bland, I'm sure it's the heavy hand of CBS. He'd be great as a Letterman replacement, when DL retires.
I don't see Stewart or Colbert making the jump to network shows. Why would they? They have far more control over what they can say and do on cable. They'd need to tame themselves far too much for NBC or CBS. Let them do what they do best where they're at.
My folks prefer Leno, who's OK I guess, though he tends to tell the same jokes every night for a week, does nastier jokes than Johnny Carson ever did, and antagonizes the guests too much on occasion. I never could get into Conan, and don't plan on watching him when he takes over the Tonight Show. Letterman's OK. Not crazy about Carson Daly either. Never watched Kilborn much. But, to each their own, I guess.
