Here's some interesting talk regarding the recent JUSTICE LEAGUE casting session...

Published at:  Oct 18, 2007 5:55:21 PM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. We know that a bunch of young actors recently read for roles in George Miller's upcoming epic JUSTICE LEAGUE. Those actors included Adam Brody, Joseph Cross (RUNNING WITH SCISSORS), Michael Angarano (SKY HIGH), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (GRINDHOUSE)and Teresa Palmer (WOLF CREEK).

The young ages of those being read did not go unnoticed by the geek community.

I've since spoken with a source buried deep in the production who shed some light on this casting session.

This source said that all those people above (and many more) were only reading for two characters: The Flash and Wonder Woman. The source assured me that the casting is skewing very young only for The Flash because he's the youngest member of the Justice League. And Wonder Woman is a goddess that doesn't age, so it's understandable she'd be cast young.

It's nothing major, but it gives definition to what we were seeing regarding the casting. I actually really like Adam Brody for Flash, but then again I only have a rudimentary knowledge of the team. I was always a Marvel kid.

I'm also hearing rumblings from inside the production that now the film will be mostly, if not completely, done live action and not performance capture as was originally thought. That makes me smile, but it also has me hoping they keep continuity with the ongoing superhero franchises and they get Bale and Routh in as Batman and Superman.

What do you folks think?

Should not be in this movie... it would keep continuity for the JL movie itself but would kill it for the Batman and Superman franshises - Batman more so. I don't see a way they could blend those two universes seemlessly. They're too radically different

    by azlam orlandu

...this is going to be entertaining as fuck. Movies like this just don't happen everyday. I don't care who they cast, nor do I care about continuity, just make it stylized and look timeless like and Alex Ross painting and I'm good. Just give the damn thing some class and show appreciation for the source material. Oh and if they're not going to cast Bale as Batman then at least use this as an excuse to put Bats in the gray tights.

with Bale 'n Routh it would be a real event movie.

    by mansep

it would make it more exciting having those established actors appear in this, plus it would give more validity to any spin-offs involving other characters, having already played opposite them. But i doubt Bale and Routh would really be willing to be part of this (particularly Bale) unless the film had a really strong writer and director. Bale is mainly onboard Batman because of Nolan. Maybe they'd do it as a cameo... but then that would probably limit the scope of the script. it's more likely this will be an alternate universe...in which case i think this film is a really bad idea. Having 2 batmans and 2 supermans out there will just dilute the main film franchises of their appeal.

Routh and Bale - no chance

    by dastickboy

There's no way they will get those two onto this project. Well possibly Routh but I think Bale has too much invested in the Chris Nolan take on Batman, plus I think Miller will want to create his own mythology with a Batman that would work in his story. Logically, Bale is playing Batman just starting out, and already he has detailed files on all the Superheroes and how to take them down? Nah. Cast a Bruce Wayne in his 40's - Bruce Campbell anyone?

    young?

    by johnspartan

Who says a goddess that never ages has to be young? A goddess should have some bearing to her, a regal quality, something literally AWEsome. Personally, I think Adrianne Palicki is an interesting idea (other than being blonde), and doing a great job on Friday Night Lights, but I don't think a young actress can pull off the authority that needs to come from Wonder Woman. But then again, I was looking for the same thing out of my Superman, jonesing for the second coming of George Reeves by way of Alex Ross, instead of the retread of Chris Reeve we got out of Routh. I guess movie execs think only young kids are into all this comic geek stuff. But the comics world was utterly redefined twenty years ago by two graphic novels that dared portray superheroes in their later years: Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen. Apparently, the Watchmen cast is skewing younger. But not every comic book adaptation has to be stocked with former WB regulars (yes, I know it's the CW now. Whatevs). My vote for Wonder Woman (and I thought I heard something about her being cast in Watchmen): Carla Gugino. She doesn't quite have the presence I'm talking about, but I think she could pull it off. That's my two cents, anyway.

It would be cool if they were in it sure!
It sets Batman & Superman up for meeting each other for the first time.
Thus, would be a good spring board for the Batman Vs. Superman movie were they are driven to strangling each other.
On Wonder Woman Katharine McPhee, still stands out for me in the part or even Hayden Panettiere.

    by tvguy4566

I'm tired of the light weight Batman that Michael Keaton, Val Kilmner, and George Clooney did. I want the true Dark Knight. Christian Bale was closer, but he was not nearly cynical or grumpy enough. This movie won't work unless he buts heads with Superman for being a boyscout and not trust him or get annoyed with the Flash's peppy exuberance. I want tension among the Justice League not lovefest the 70s cartoon series was.

Miller needs to cast an actor in his mid 30s or so (any younger will not be believable) who can play a heavy. I think Batman is the most important casting move in the whole movie.

For years I've been waiting for the guy to make a balls to the walls fantasy action adventure movie. I mean that, years. I even gave his sick kid, pigs and penguins movies a chance, and was surprised as hell as how good, stylized, and sweet they were. And let's see what else he has done: The Mad Max Trilogy, The Witches of Eastwick, and the best segment of Twilight Zone: The Movie. A.K.A. ALL THE REST OF THE SHIT THAT COMES BEFORE GEORGE FUCKING MILLER'S SEGMENT: THE MOVIE. Now he's doing a live action movie with all those superheroes in it, and you fuckers are whining? What the hell is wrong with you?! This movie will fucking rule, and me and some other fellas here will be the proud owners of huge ass smiles and a cocky "We told you so" grin on our fat happy faces. Casting and kooks

    by punklogic

Rachel Bilson is barely 5'0" tall...c'mon guy...

A casting director must keep cost and sellability a prrority. I think mixing movie and tv mid-tier actors is the way to go, but skewing so young just sucks. This ain't the effin' Teen Titans from the OC...so, with that said...tell me what you guys think of these choices...

Jennifer Connelly as Wonder Woman. She is close to tall enough and has the beauty, did you see her in Blood Diamond? Get here ass into a gym for a few months to put on some muscle and I think she could pull off a soft spoken Diana. She is notorious for victim type roles, now it's time for her to kick a little amazonian booty.

Paul Walker as the Flash. Cocky and assured. I love Ryan Reynolds, but his jokes get old fast and kill narrative flow(ala Blade III)...while Paul is not the best actor in the world but he is likable guy and has the medium yet svelt frame to pull off the fastest man alive.

Leonard Roberts as Green Lantern. He was D.L. on Heroes and is a guy who could pull off a great John Stewart. A little young, but a worthy choice nonetheless. I hear Common is up for the role and think he would be pretty good as well.

Josh Holloway as Aquaman. Obvious casting, but play Aquaman all pissed off about the state of things and Josh plays into this very well. The long haired bearded version of Aquaman...

Josh Duhamel as Batman. I know I know...but, I was watching Transformers and looking at him as a possible leading man...good looking, cheeky and tall. Not as thick as Bruce should be but as a wiseass arrogant Bruce new to the suit, might be a good choice. I mean we all know Christian Bales is the man, but for a more mainstream type movie...what about Josh?

Jim Caviezel as Superman. I always thought he should play Supes. We need a man to play Clark not a boy-man. Jim can hold his own as well as be sort of the veteran of the team.

As for the Martian Manhunter...I have no idea. Would love Ron Perlman, but he is too busty being red. He will probably not look like a green conehead, but still someone tall and mature with a strong personality...Viggoish if you will. Paul Bettany?

Eric Dane as Green Arrow...don't know why, I think he would kill it as Green Arrow...I know he is not in the movie...oh well.

Motion Capture...all things can be resized and tweaked, but I still say rachel Bilson is cute but a hobbit can never be an amazon.

    by benferris

So far things seem fine. I have nothing to worry about. The action in Happy Feet was my favorite part, and Adam Brody would be a good personality to fit into the role of The Flash.

I don't think they should or could get Bale and Routh onto this though. But if they had to cast anybody for Batman, I think Prison Break's Wenworth Miller would fit pretty nicely. And for Superman they could get that guy that was once up for it who was on that show Traveler, and most recently played the deceased character Bryce on Chuck.

    Just a thought.

Why is Flash always considered the impetuous youth of the group?

    by immortal_fish

Thank you, animated JLA. Granted, it did much good on the property, but this is one sizable thorn it spurned.First of all, whether or not the Flash was the youngest member of the JLA is irrelevant and should not mean that he must be the cookie cutter, headstrong, immature stereotype of the group. Second, it wasn't Wally West that filled the shoes of this stereotype, it was Kyle Rayner. But you can't have Kyle when you're shooting for John Stewart, which will likely manifest as a whole 'nother (unwelcome) stereotype. Don't get me started.Maybe it's just me, but could we please have fleshed out CHARACTERS instead of stereotypes wearing the spandex? Thank you for your consideration.PS: Mary Winstead is a doll and would be perfect for WW -- 10 years FROM NOW. And with an enormous chunk of Brandon Routh style coaching for each and every line she speaks. But if you want this movie in the near term, please please cast Jennifer Connelly. The role deserves gravitas and that lady would bring it in spades.

I'd like to see Routh as Superman.

    by jonquixote

He was a good Superman and a Justice League movie could be one way to salvage the franchise after the unfortunate choices made in RETURNS. Bitchy Lois shacked up with somebody else? Superkid? Superman abandoning everybody? Sorry, no time to get back into that. Gotta go fight alien starfish with Green Lantern. *** Bale, I think we've seen enough Batman that it won't be damaging or jarring to have to 'concurrent' Batman franchises. So we can let Bale and Nolan keep doing what they're doing, and they can find some cool, low-key casting for the new Batman. Maybe somebody we'd love to see, but who'd never get a chance to headline the main franchise. Adam Baldwin or Kurt Russell or Michael Madsen or somebody.

Superman and Batman should never co-exist, especially not Christopher Nolan's Batman. Honestly, the whole idea of the Justice League is a bit strange to me, but I'm more comfortable with it if it has no connection to the Nolan movies. The relatively realistic world he's painting just doesn't seem to fit with the tone of something like the Justice League. Too much suspension of belief.

I suspect you're confusing 'stereotypes' with 'archtypes': a broad, simple and familiar type of character, right? And I don't think you're gonna escape it here - if there's a JLA movie, there's likely gonna be too much going on to paint the characters in anything but broad strokes most of the time. You might have to accept that in a big, multi-character movie, archtypes are pretty much an inevitability. Otherwise, you're dooming yourself to disappointment on this one before the first frame of film is shot. *** Of course, the JLA cartoon did wonderful things with the Flash - even if it didn't line up with the DC version, he was arguably the most beloved by the writers and well-rounded character. If the movie treats the characters with anything approximating the subtlety and respect the cartoon did, it's gonna be a success.

He's playing Hal Jordan in The New Frontier, whoever brought that up. And yeah, he's an excellent actor and is capable of the emotion necessary to play Batman, but to my way of thinking he's such a big guy that he'd be better off playing Superman. I mean, yeah, Routh bulked up for the part, but he still looked kinda scrawny, compared to the way I picture Supes in my head. To me, Superman has to have naturally broad shoulders with muscles built on them to be the right type. As well as some serious presence, which, sorry, Routh also lacked.

Fair enough. Fair enough. I think you're right that I'm mixing the two -- for the most part. I fear for how Tyrese will portray John Stewart, who like the rest, is way too young. On the other hand, I refuse to be so forgiving with the JLA property given how the FF movies were received in TB. Yeah, they screwed Doom, but the rest, except Sue, were the most spot-on adaptations of any four color character brought to film. Reed was a bore? Of course he was! Johnny was arrogant? Of course he was! Ben was a dope? Of course he was! Remember, I'm speaking character development and delivery here, not story.Bottom line -- I refuse to sit idle and accept how a matured Wally West post Titans and post Raven would join the JLA only to behave worse than Garfield. That ain't this character, that's Kyle Rayner. I didn't like it in JLA/JLU and I won't like it here.

His Batman movie made me want to read comics it was so badass. But I can understand the comments about how he does not need to be Batman in this particular Justice movie, how it is a different level of comic realization. I just hope the folks involved know what they are doing. They have been trying to bring a Wonder Woman to the big screen but that is not easy. Invisible Jet, lasso, etc. Maybe this approach is just what they need to make it acceptable.

I'm typically not a fan of comic book movies, but the notion that throwing several comic book characters will make a great movie is rubbish. History has proven otherwise: Spiderman 3, Batman Forever, and Batman and Robin to name a few. Simply throwing a bunch of heroes and villains together is putting on a grand gay costume ball. This movie will suck all kinds of balls.

    by bob cryptonight

I like both films, but there is no LOGICAL reason that the Justice League movie needs to have ANYTHING in common with those two. In fact, the world BATMAN BEGINS exists in won't really work with a Justice League movie...because Nolan treated the character with too much realism...and that will just look silly with the Justice League (unless they plan to massively change costumes, characters, etc and take it in an X-MEN direction that strays from the comic book). Let them do their own take on it, whatever that may be. Continuity is stupid, anyway.

if it's in continuity with Frank Miller's All Star Batman and Robin. Uma Thuraman plays Blak Canary! Seriously though, I get the feeling this will be more like a Fantastic Four movie or a Transformers. Hopefully fun if we don't take it seriously. I'd love for it to take itself seriously and do it right, but as long as Batman upercuts Superman so hard with a Kryptonite glove that it causes him to flip over backwards I'm happy. On a related note, I really hate Tom Welling but enjoy watching Smallville just to see Lana getting more and more emotionally damaged every episode. I think this season should be the end of Smallville, and next season should be the start of a new show called "Metropolis" and they should lose the no flight no tights rule. I think if they milk the current status quo for any more seasons it will be too ridiculous. Plus, I understand that for many people, Welling IS Superman, so it's high time he paid the price for that by putting on the costume.

Bale is a good Batman for Christopher Nolan's "realistic" Batman in his early stages of Batman's career, but I don't think he would work in this movie where it isn't grounded in reality and Batman is supposed to be more battle worn and weary of his cohorts (assuming they are following some of the rumored plotlines).

But I bet you Miller casts a fresh baby-faced actor in his 20's. Because he doesn't give a damn about the fans or the dignity of the Justice League. Nobody in this movie will be on the up side of 30. Miller has already said he is going young in the cast. That was in the Hollywood Reporter. Now Quint says that it just isn't early 20's young. It is late 20's young. Wow, I'm so reassured now.

That would be ideal. Guaranteed butts in seats. Let Miller cast someone else for JL because in the end, it wouldn't really matter. Nolan and Singer have a good thing going with their respective franchises. I would love to see a collaboration between those two. Only recommendation I have would be for the Superman team to drop the fresh faced image that Routh currently has. He's gotta be a bit more gritty in my opinion if a collaboration were to happen. Bale has the advantage going in. He's an unbelievably fucking seriously talented actor. He has a huge fan base and already wins hands down before such an interesting project could be conceived. The playing field has to be evened somewhat.

Not that I wouldn't want to see it eventually, but, now??? When you have two big franchises on your hands? And the fact that it's being rushed before the strike - boy, is that cause for alarm. It's not a new thing in Hollywood to have two different films on the same subject be it with competing movies about asteroids/meteors, or Wyatt Earp, or Capote, or animated bugs AND sharks. But what's weird about this is that it's the SAME studio financing the competing pictures. Sure, they won't compete head-to-head, but they will, without a doubt, be compared. Bale and Routh...

    by deeboshanks

The wonderful thing about Batman being in the JL is that he's so grounded in reality (despite wearing a giant batsuit). Most of the other leaguers see everything on a massive scale. Bigger powers, bigger drama. But Batman has really gotten his hands dirty, risked life and limb, and does so every night against human villains and super-villains alike. Bale would knock the performance out of the park, but they would have to have a viable reason for him to be there. Bale is picky with his scripts. We can't have something like Fantastic Four, here. As for Routh, I don't give a damn about him being anywhere as I can't logically place Singer's ridiculous Donnerverse-only-in-this-timeline bullshit anyway. If they make him Routh, I just can't see him leading ANY team to saving the world. The guy can't even take responsibility for his own lovechild, much less leading an entire team of kick ass do-gooders. Tell Bruce Campbell to lose some weight, and put him in the blue tights.

Wonder Woman should look to be in her early 30's either way.

    by negative man

Ya, she's a Goddess...but who'd take a 20-something looking Goddess seriously? In her 30's she'll look more competent and will be taken as a strong woman and not a snotty royal bitch when she speaks in dominant, overbearing Goddess mode.Either way, I would still rather a JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA movie. Fresher, more interesting characters. A wider, more fun range of powers. And not iconic enough to have everyone bitching if it's not 'spot on' to what they envision in their heads. Plus, fewer alien, cosmic, fictional civilization types to explain. Batman and Flash aside, the other characters of the JLA are too disconnected to humanity. Yep, even Green Lantern is, he needs a solo movie to not seem too 'out there' character and power-wise. Pretty much everyone in the JSA are human, so you can bring the audience in more. But hey, that's just me.

    by live.

Or will WB pay for some respected talent? WB may think they're smart saving money up front, but they'll be paying for it on the back end, when JL under performs.
If they get the cast right, I'll be the most pro-Justice League person ever. It'll be Rah Rah all day long. But somehow I just don't see WB doing anything right.

    by tsfogg

if Wonder Woman is a goddess who doesn't age, and you're thinking about making a JLA franchise . . . wouldn't it make more sense to cast someone a little older? the older you get, the less you "age." you cast a young twenty-something in the part, in five years, she's gonna look older -- as opposed to a thirty-something who will still look, well, thirty-something.

    by mayorofsimpleton

The public can understand different characters, they're not stupid. They've seen different James Bonds, different Batmen, etc. Let's give this thing a chance and not hold it down the way that Superman Returns was held down by Donner's Universe and as a movie, it suffered! The comics have different artists, different writers, ALL THE TIME. There are hundreds of ways to do Bats and Supes, so let's let George Miller do his own, original, cool thing. Don't kill this movie before it starts. Think about it - is a skinny, emo, stalker, maroon wearing Superman really the best we can do?

I just cant seem to be able to picture this, its really impossible for there to be two sets of actors out that are helming the roles of batman and superman. Personally I didn't even really like bale as batman, and BATMAN BEGINS was my least favorite Nolan film, I loved everything about SUPERMAN RETURNS (including Routh) and I think Singer nailed it. But anyway, the only way they could this is by a three part series or somthing but even that wont happen, eventually this thing will run into a dead end and not recover

...when u run outta movie ideas for the Batman and Superman franchises. They should lead up to it. Hint at Darkseid's arrival on Earth in a Supes movie, then do JLA movie. Marvel is doing it right by setting up the Avengers with Fury's cameo in Iron Man. The DC & Marvel movies should be treated more like large-scale comic books or serials with their own universe.

She's a WOMAN. A regal, adult, fully-grown, NON-GIRLY, Woman. She should be able to make a man wither with a look. She should look like she can fight (As The Batman said recently, Wonder Woman is the greatest melee fighter IN THE WORLD.)
My compromising suggestion for casting directors? Cast EVA GREEN and send her to the gym to gain a little muscle mass. She's got the beauty, the maturity, and the strength of character to pull this off. She's no little girl-- She's a woman in every sense of the word. She just needs some muscles and she's perfect.

    by zerocorpse

Have you seen "The Dreamers"??? She's got a GREAT body. Perfect tits. She's not playing fucking POWER GIRL... It's Wonder Woman, who is rarely portrayed as having double-D breasts. That's why they MADE Power Girl!
Now, if you're basing Wonder Woman's bra size on comparisons to Lynda Carter, then there's your problem right there. Half of that was costume pushin' em up. The thing was PADDED.
I'm thinking Lynda Carter and Eva Green have similar body types. Lynda might be a bit bigger on top, but not much... And Eva's in better shape (tone) than Lynda ever was.
What they need to realize when they do costuming, though, is that Wonder Woman is NOT WEARING SPANDEX OR POLYESTER. She's wearing ARMOR. Metal. Not fabric. With that in mind, the breasts can be "enhanced" quite a bit by making armor that "fills them out" --
In other words, special effects can change the boobage.

but your obviously a fan whos familiar with supermans legacy and someone who has very high expectations of his embodiment. I agree that Routh didn't knock it out of the park or send shivers down my spine or anything, but I still think that Singer did a good job casting him. I said "nailed it" because there's no denying the fact that Singer demonstrated a perfect execution with this movie, this is the most visually accurate comic book movie of the computer age next to sin city, it looks perfect. As well as being exactly what it needed to be story, tone, and plot wise. I mean at least this was taken seriously, do you really think that someone could have done a better job? would you have preffered McG to direct this?

Michael Bay could of, we would have gotten probably the same level of understanding of the character but at least it would be fun. Story, tone, plot wise? Man you must know fuck all about Superman. Read Birthright, thats a superman style movie right there, not that great since none of the comics are great, but thats something more 'superman', maybe Our Worlds at War. Smallville's last two season finales/premieres have been 'superman' esque. Plus it didn't fit the tone visually of Superman, it should have been brighter. Batman Begins is the best because it looks and feels like a live action Detective Comics arc.

I've actually been thinking that Michelle Ryan from the new Bionic Woman show looks a lot like a "Wonder Woman" actress. But I'm no fan of Wonder Woman. But then, I've only seen a few episodes of that old TV show with Lynda Carter. I just don't get the invisible jet. It seems like the absolute dumbest superhero method of transportation I've ever seen.
As for Batman, I think Boreanaz would be awesome. I think he totally pull off both sides of that role. Just check him out in the scenes in Angel's early seasons when he has to break into W&H in a suit. He could pull of Bruce Wayne easy, and Batman great. I think he was actually up for the main roles in both Superman and Batman movies but didn't end up getting cast in the end. Bale may have worked better because of the young age, and Bale IS an amazing actor, but I'd still love to see DB in this role.

    Superman Returns

    by heks

I must be one of the few people who really liked Superman Returns. Mind you, the first time I saw it I would have only given it a 5 or 6 out of ten, because it really wasn't what I was expecting. But by the 4th time I saw it I upgraded it to about a 9 out of 10. I actually enjoyed the characterization of Superman in the film and Routh's just-nostalgic-enough performance as an homage to Reeve and the fact that it was supposed to be in continuity with the first two films. For me, the worst casting choice was Kate Bosworth as Lois. I just didn't believe her in the role and wasn't crazy about her characterization. I thought Kevin Spacey played Lex well for the movie franchise continuity, I just wasn't crazy the retread of Lex's Superman I plot. But ultimately, Superman Returns seemed to me to be a story about Clark's/Superman's alienation. He leads a lonely life. He's gone for years and when he comes back, the one person he really cares about hasn't just moved on, she seems to hate him, and as Clark, it seemed like nobody really even cared that he was gone (as usual), except for maybe Jimmy. Also, there were some moments that just felt really epic to me. But that's just my opinion. I do get why a lot of people weren't crazy about it ... since I wasn't at first either.

about this now I have read that this is only teh flash and wonder woman that are going to be teh young starlets. I agree that teh Batman that Nolan and Bale created would be wrong for this movie. It's not the same world, so to speak. JLA has always been a more sci-fi orientated universe. one that wouldn't suit the "real-world" tone that he exists in currently. That said, I don't think this would be a bad thing for Routh. It's more the movie that I want to see Supes in. Kick ass action that lives in the realm of fantsy. George Miller rarely disappoints, and the man knows action. I think we have to trust him until we see the real deal. this could be one hell of an event movie. Only time will tell.

True. Welling is hands down the best, most natural and realistic Clark Kent ever. Just grabs the character and makes it. There has also been more 'superman' stuff showing him going in that direction, but remember Superman's story is long, the show will probably end before he travels overseas(Europe, Africa), then thats another story in itself. The Season premiere had many Superman style moments, the nod to the kid after saving him and his dad after dispersing the water damn, and telling Bizarro "Hey...Is that all you got". Yeah he'd make a good supes.

Miller kicks ass, but do you guys really think the man is going to get carte blanche on this project to do whatever he wants to in terms of casting, story, and overall creative input? I severely doubt it. This is a cash-cow project for WB that could potentially spin-off multiple franchises. They're going to keep a close watch on this one. While I think George will have a lot of input, I severely doubt he'll have the final say. And if they aren't going to cast Routh (who'd do it in a heartbeat) or Bale (who probably wouldn't do it at all), then both Supes and Bats need to be cast older. I'm thinking late 40s/early 50s. That way they could still exist in the same continuity as the current ongoing franchises, but be placed far enough into the future that they don't muck things up. It'd be the only thing that would make sense............having an aging Batman & Superman gathering a younger crop of heroes and banding together to battle a formidable menace.

Routh would do it. Bale - not a hope in hell.

    by steve rogers

Let's be honest, Routh needs the work. He's tainted by the fact that Superman Returns was boring as fuck. Bale won't compromise on his and Nolan's trilogy to do this flick, not even if WB threw a fortune at him. Will - not - happen.

Still think this is the wrong time for this film!!

    by boyblue

We want to know how this effects the Current Batman and Superman films, why cant we get a proper answer??
Oh and Smallville sucks, Welling couldnt act his way out of a Steve Martin film, err?

    Reply to Talkback

  • but the likelihoodthat this will happen is pretty remote, well at least in geting Bale onboard. Particularly in light of the impact and success of Nolan's Batman, I doubt Bale would want to jeopardize that with a film that tonally could be at odds with the character that he's established. I just think there's an inherant campness and implausibility with the whole JLA cabal, the costumes will be a major issue, and unless it's dealt with in a similar fashion to Singer's X-men or even Nolan's Batman for that matter, it'll just degenerate into a Fantastic 4 kids flick. It's been a while since Miller has worked in this area (Babe in the City was dark but does'nt really invite comparison to a Superhero flick) I hope his mojo's well and truly working for JLA, I want it to succeed so he has the clout to greenlight Fury Road.

Who I'd Like To See Cast

    by therobcat

Superman should be Routh or Welling. Do we really need three current continuity super-actors? David Boreanez or Bale as Batman. That blond Logan dude from Veronica Mars as the Flash. Megan Fox as Wonder Woman. D.B. Woodside as Green Lantern. Ving Rhames as Martian Manhunter

Also, is it just me, or would Neal McDonough make a perfect Captain America?

Here's an odd thought for Flash...Christopher Masterson.

    by negative man

A youthful 27yo, can play cocky yet not in a 'ya want to hate him' way. 5'10" so he isn't huge or too small. Easily fits the 'new to the job'/'eye of the audience' feel. Could definitely play that sorta 'fish out of water', new to the league feel as well. Has the ability to easily play the newish police scientist who is way to thorough and deliberate with his job, yet becomes way to overconfident after he attained his powers. Years of acting experience, yet is not a big name to boot. And most important...not a CW/WB pretty boy. Flash should not look like a fragile man-bitch.Just a random thought.

Yeah let Nolan and Bale do their thing

    by soulsonic

I love the way they're going with bat's world. They're real film-makers remember. All they want to do is tell a good story. They have no interest in satasfying a bunch of fanboys. They've created a mature and fairly believable universe which would be completely ruined if they introduced guys who could fly and aliens and all that. Nothing against the JLA or anything but it just wouldn't click with Nolan's world.

Batman should be the older veteran...

    by prof. pop-cult

I think it's fine if the script does to the Justice League what the X-Men movie did: Change the ages of the characters from the comic book. Okay, so Flash is the youngest, newest member. That's fine and sounds like it would work. On the other end, I say Batman should be the oldest -- the grizzled veteran. He could even be older (by about 10 years) than Superman. This would let the fans have an older Batman, and not tread on the continuity of the Nolan movies, which are focused on "young" Batman. Batman in the Justice League movie could be depicted similarly to Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns version. So my ideal wish/hope is that Batman in Justice League is older -- Robin and Batgirl have already come and gone from his life. And his costume would be different... maybe the color scheme could be a very dark navy blue with dark gray scheme.

The script sounds dire for this, confirming most fears...

    by killakane

Sounds like another low-brow Superhero film in the same vein as fantastic 4. I hope Miller's talents can prevail and save this from being just another cheese fest. Personally I just don't find the set-up with such a potentially camp array of characters as being that plausible, unless it's handled with the sufficuent gravitas of something like Singer's X-men. No wonder Bale won't go near this.

    Casting-look at 300

    by jedi68

Miller needs to create his own vision here, not do what Nolan or Singer did. Batman casting is tough but there is one actor out there who can stand toe to toe with Bale for Geekness- Gerard Butler- anybody see 300. Remember the scene where he took down 17 people in one continous long shot- can you imagine him doing that in a Batman costume- He is the guy! I would also look at the other actors who filled the other roles in that film. The other route depending on how old Miller plays batman is to get Michael Keaton back.

    Reply to Talkback

  • it will cut thru the wind and arive seconds before he does.
I'd go for Eva Green or Carla G as wonder woman, knowing that Jessica Biel turned it down. She's by far the perfect choice.

    by brians life

In what I've read thus far, I've seen fanboys pleading for Powers Boothe to play Batman, Edward James Almos to play Batman and THE ROCK to play SUPERMAN!?!?

This movie WILL have a continuity separate from Nolan's Batman and Singer's Superman...THANK GOD! That is just fine. I was in an argument with my girlfriend's sister. She couldn't except that "Batman Begins" had nothing to due with "Batman" because it exists as a film. It's almost like she treats "Film" as this alternate reality. I'm stoned.

    What!?!

  • (Did anyone get a look at Wonder Woman in the "KINGDOM COME" graphic novel?) Personally, I'd forget all about the anti-age bit of WONDER WOMAN and... again... I say... MAKE THE BEST MOVIE YOU CAN POSSIBLY MAKE. And I really think that Kate Winslet, as Wonder Woman, would be the perfect fit with Bale and Routh,...along with Henry Simmons as Green Lantern. Sure, you leave room for a sequel or two. But that's it. In the far future, you swap actors (unless you're aiming for a KINGDOM COME adaption). Talent moves on. But if we get word that Bale, Routh, Winslet, and Simmons are in this thing,...oh, man, I'm just gonna geek out like a school boy!!! Great Krypton!!! And I'm over 40!!!

What Do I Think You Ask?

    by jaysmack

I think they should just throw out the stupid, typical studio bullshit. Stop trying to be clever, cast Ryan Reynolds as Flash and Kate Beckinsale as Wonder Woman.

Casting some 21 year-old for Wonder Woman is a dumbass more. Casting that young makes her Wonder GIRL. And making the Flash some dumb kid isn't cute. But can you expect a fossil like Miller who had been put out to pasture to understand that? This movie may be made for kids, but that doesn't mean it has to star kids.

But it's hard when studios make so many mistakes (i.e. too many villains in a superhero movie when one or two would suffice, rushing a movie just to get it out in time, etc). I'm not optimistic about Bale and Routh being in this movie... I hope they do it. It would show that there are some people in the higher ranks that pay attention to the fans. I'm not really a fan of JL, but I still don't want to see it in the dogpile of failed superhero movies. That pile is too high as it is. The better these movies are, the better chance we have of seeing others released that are shown the same care. If more and more are mediocre or downright suck, we'll see a break from these types of movies for awhile until someone revisits it in ten years... That would be a shame. There are a lot of great movies yet to be made from this material.

Nerosday hit an interesting idea a while back

    by rocklobster800

Benicio Del Toro as Batman...seriously,if that guy was a straight up caucasian he would be perfect! its hard to pass off a puerto rican guy as being called Bruce Wayne unfortunatly. but looking at pictures...man, he would be great...its just a pity he speaks a bit weird..I mean trying to imagine him talking to Alfred is a bit strange, however the idea of him in the bat suit taking guys down...it feels right to me.He has the LOOK. Anyway, we already have a potentially perfect Batman in Christian Bale (fautless Bruce Wayne, needs to tone down his growl in the Batsuit as it comes off as a little funny) and while the idea of JLA with Miller at the helm is interesting as long as The Dark Knight gets here on schedule Im happy. But if I have to suggest casting-Routh as Superman (best thing in SR)or if they HAVE to recast, Billy Crudup, Evageline Lily as Wonderwoman, Ryan Gosling as The Flash, Selma Blair as Lois Lane (although Janeane Garofalo would have been PERFECT like 10 years ago), Laurence Fisburne as Martian Manhunter and ,fuckit Ill throw it out there, Keifer Sutherland as Batman.

And Smallville is far more entertaining and "Superman" than Superman Returns, the last two season finales and premieres have proven that. Fuck this movie. Too Early, too many problems, if you can't do it right, then don't do it. Making a movie in a rush is never a good thing, making a superhero movie in a rush is even worst, making motherfucking Justice League of America the ultimate comic book movie in a rush is completely wrong, making it during the same time the greatest superhero movies of all time are out and their depiction so perfect and so well realized that they can't be topped but this film has potential to ruin it is criminal, it should be illegal.

    by wormie1

Yeah, Eva Green would be great as WW. I still think not having Routh and Bale is a bad idea. I can understand the Nolan Batman milleu being too removed from the Justice League concept, but we need a familiar Superman (BTW the character does not age at the same rate as humans, so he could look like Routh or Welling yet actually be older). The idea of Keaton (my fave Batman) returning is a great one, but it's unlikely he'd want to do it, or that WB would want him back, sadly.

Not keen on the idea of Brody for Flash, but it could work

    by dannyocean01

They are right about the youth of the Flash. He does get dumped on for being the new punk, and his apparent immaturity causes friction. Other thing is, Batman needs to have that elder quality, and what with Bale and Routh being relatively young anyway, the more youthful a Flash the better.

As for Wonder Woman, I don't agree on having some teen soap/emo show nothing being cast. She's one of the big three and the actor needs to have the gravitas to pull of such a role.

I don't know how you can do a JLA without Batman

    by tvguy4566

Batman makes the whole league dynamics interesting. He is the guy who butts heads with everyone. He doesn't like and distrusts Superman because he feels that anyone who is that prim and proper will explode some day and with Superman's powers that makes him dangerous. The whole Batman vs. Superman thing (which is rumored to be part of the script) is the most interesting part of the whole JLA concept. Without that tension between Batman and Superman, this movie would be as interesting as the Fantastic Four movies.

Welling was in BOTH of the "Cheaper By The Dozen" films. it doesn't matter WHAT you thought of the films themselves, he WAS in them. What has BJ "I Was Fired From A Soap For Bad Acting" Routh done? That would be JACK SHIT. But keep trying to convince others that Welling "can't" act, youngster. Maybe AFTER the 7th season on a PRIME TIME show, Warner Bros. just MIGHT listen to you and can him. that has about as much chance of happening as Singer doing another Singerman film. Which is NONE.

Even if there is no strike, the stockpiling of scripts and the adjustments made to production schedules will have almost the same effect. The impact is far-reaching. Hell, I might even lose my job, and I just work with cameras. Every time these strikes or threats of a strike come around, it's pretty rough on the trades people.
Point taken about the story...these things are such a crapshoot anyway, it's tough to make a good movie anyway. All I hope for is they have fun with this and they give us a good show. Cheers...

Make it performance capture... Make it a cartoon of some kind so it can stay as far away from the franchises as it possibly can. So it can attract a completely different crowd than the ones still interested in Bryan Singer's Superman sequel. The can come out six months apart.... who will care.... If it's live action and looks like all other comic book people will be confused and they may decide to wait on Bryan Singers Superman.... SEPERATE THEM!! SEND IT CARTOON LAND OR STRAIGHT TO VIDEO!!! And they prove you CORRECT! Hey, still have "high hopes" for that Singerman "sequel"?? hard to read that writing on the wall? Here, let me translate: We shall say much, and yet shall want words: but the sum of our words is, He is all. What shall we be able to do to glorify him? For the Superman himself is above all Singer's travesties. The Superman is noble and exceeding great, and his power is admirable. Glorify the Superman as much as ever you can, for he will yet far exceed Singerman Peeps, and his magnificence is wonderful. Blessing the Superman, exalt him as much as you can: for he is above all BJ Routh's. When you exalt him, put forth all your strength, and be not weary: for you can never go far enough.

Can you imagine how many women will be...put off (so-to-speak)...by a young, skinny girl being casted as Wonder WOMAN??? (I agreed with my wife, on her feelings about the casting of Lois Lane in SUPERMAN RETURNS) I'm completely convinced that Kate Winslet would really sell the part like no other actress.

    PREDICTION

    by kal el vis

This is how it will go down, mark my words: When the JLA film comes out, and does $250-300 million DOMESTIC, each character will get a seperate "solo" film. Superman will be with the actor playing him, and Singerman will have been a distant memory. They will say they "Decided to go in a different direction", but that they "Wish Bryan Singer all the best in all of his endeavors, and hope to work with him again in the future". If ANYONE doubts this will happen, don't trip on the first step to the Little Yellow School Bus. Those with an OUNCE of SENSE can see this is how it will go down. But go ahead and "think" there will be a "sequel". We'll see who ends up disappointed.

but seriously, I don't want to see the justice league go down the LXG path. By incorporating the JL films with the Superman films, it becomes less about the cast and more about the story. Why rush to fit 6+ characters in one movie? Even the first X-Men ended up focusing on Wolverine, and that's what will likely happen in a JL film, everyone wants to be Batman. But what if Superman and Batman teamed up AFTER Nolan's trilogy is done? Superman: The Man of Steel (with an appearance by Wonder Winslet), then Superman: World's Finest (co-starring BaleBatman), then Superman: Brainiac (co-starring Flash and Lantern), then THE JUSTICE LEAGUE (with Martian Manhunter and team vs Darkseid)

Bale and Routh, without ANY connection to previous work.

    by jdanielp

THIS flick is and SHOULD be something different, which should (actually) improve the odds for Bale's interest. New suits...and even a new voice for Bale's Batman. Anyone else want to hear Bale's natural voice carried a bit deeper, as Batman (perhaps even, though slightly, electronically altered)? In this flick, you just might. And maybe the Batman and Superman costume departments will surprise us, in having a different vision for JUSTICE LEAGUE,...which may be so visually different from Nolan's Batman and Singer's Superman. This flick has the potential to be AMAZING. (And it's the kind of flick I STILL dream about making.)

Keep the Superman franchise alive by incorporating the Justice League. Don't abandon one franchise to get another one started. Use what you got and go from there. Superman Returns was visually remarkable, and Routh deserves to show what he can do and prove himself a worthy successor to Reeves. Singer was the worst part of Superman Returns thanks to his slavish devotion to methodical storytelling. Superman deserves an action director, and having other heores to work with will only improve his leadership characteristics.

Personally, I think Mary Elizabeth Winstead(sp?) is a fine actress but wrong for Wonder Woman. They need to go a little older.

Then why not just make a Teen Titans movie, based off the original comics, not so much the anime-like tv show from a few years ago, though that was surprisingly decent as well. I'm not so sure about Mary Elizabeth Winstead playing Wonder Woman, though she could make a good Wonder Girl though.

My opinion on the subject of costumes.........

    by jdanielp

Superman's costume should mostly be influenced by the Christopher Reeve costume, with the larger "S". I think the fabric and the belt of Routh's costume were great touches, other than the cape and the colors chosen (as the colors should be Reeve's red and blue). And the "S" should also be on the cape, as was Reeve's. As to Batman's costume, from an artistic perspective, I understand the challenges. However, the challenge becomes much less of one when you focus on making the suit look very cool, even without anyone IN it. The cape (with the visual exaggeration) and the cowl and the ears are all VERY important to Batman's look on screen and the impression that he visually makes. I like the panther style of Kilmer's suit and the reptilian/armor look of Keaton's "BATMAN RETURNS" suit. But I can also see how it IS possible to involve cloth, as Alex Ross seems to do in his painted interpretations. And I LOVE how Alex Ross interprets Batman's ears, which are PERFECT(!). And eye-lenses offer various options as well and I find them all worthy explorations. And as to Wonder Woman, there is no reason why her costume can't be influenced by classic interpretations. And her "battle armor" from the graphic novel "KINGDOM COME" was awesome and beautiful. And there is NO reason why not to involve that (to some degree). And I really am a firm believer in Kate Winslet making that costume feel right on screen, in whatever interpretation they go with.

Because trilogies equal $$$ They'll make the first somewhat open-ended and see how it does at the box office. I like the whole Max Lord storyline although I think it would be better suited for a second movie in a trilogy. Whatever the plot is in the first one (maybe steal the Grant Morrison JLA 1-4) give Batman some sort of motivation for setting up the whole spy satellite system in the first place that Lord takes over. It seems weird to just start with that, especially since these characters have never met in movies before.

    by tvguy4566

He was doing Christopher Reeves, not Superman. I just think Christopher Reeves' portrayal of Superman seems a little dated today and rather than make Superman his own, Routh tried to play Christopher Reeves playing Superman which comes off a little boring and goofy.
He should have looked to what Ewan McGregor did with Obi-Wan Kenobi. McGregor incorporated a lot of Alec Guniess' manorisms in his performance, but still made it his own. Routh just mimiced Reeves and brought nothing new to the performance.

    JUSTICE LEAGUE Script Details?
    Author: Bill Ramey
    Friday, October 19, 2007

Yesterday, my good friend Clint from MOVIEHOLE.NET ran a story that described the plot of this upcoming (MAYBE) JUSTICE LEAGUE film. Seems Mr. Morris got his hands on several pages from the script. Then rather quickly, the story was removed from the website.

Was it taken down per a request by Warner Bros.? Was is pulled because it was BS?

For a time, it seemed as if it was the latter. However, as this story developed, it now looks as if those pages of the script were REAL!

In a nutshell, JL is very “comic booky,” if you will, with an emphasis on “comic.” The story still involves Maxwell Lord and the OMACs, but now includes the Crime Syndicate! You know, the CSA of Earth 3 from DC Comics' Muliverse? Yeah, them. And there is also a “Hall of Justice” ala the SUPER FRIENDS of the 70s -- but this one’s in space!
Stephanie Sanchez of IESB.NET has a rundown of this script that you can read HERE. And while you are at it, you can read their story on the JL development HERE.

So what’s the deal? Why would WB go so “popcorn” with this film? Well, I’ve been told a few things off the record, but I will say this: Perhaps they are making a concerted effort to NOT tread on anything that Chris Nolan and Bryan Singer are doing with Batman and Superman on film respectively? Also, word is floating in that JL will be a combination of MoCap, live action, and CGI.

If so, bravo! On the other hand, this news brings conjures images of BATMAN AND ROBIN and CATWOMAN in my mind.

I don't really think that would work well in the terms of making a successful movie though, the comic fans would get it, or not. But the mainstream movie going public, which this movie is being made for, would tune out and it'd end up being the biggest failure since Batman And Robin.

The only way to do the Justice League justice...

    by ninpobugei

Give it the look of "300". The surreal nature of that film and characters would pay hommage to the Justice League characters and their costumes in a way that normal live action just won't. Also, the different look of the movie would help prevent the inevitable comparison to the other ongoing Superman and Batman movies. This would allow the movie to take on the Alex Ross look that everyone has been championing...there simply is no other way to make this look right. Also, for Wonder Woman to have any credibility, she must look like an Amazonian warrior, not some twenty-something girl. She should look AT LEAST 30, she should be tall (as tall as the men, if possible), with dark hair, olive complexion, and she should be muscular without looking like a bodybuilder. Give her piercing ice-blue eyes like Tanya Roberts. Her costume should be the costume we're all familiar with, but done in armor and leather (not cloth). Superman's costume: keep the raised "S" of the last movie, but make it much larger, give the costume a brighter red and an open neck line with a more regal-looking cape over the shoulders. His boots should be knee-high, not the go-go boot style of Superman Returns. In general, the costume shouldn't look like spandex. The actor playing him should be older looking, perhaps 40-ish as he is the team patriarch - the leader and most physically powerful being in the galaxy. Batman: similar costume to the very first Batman movie, but make the cowl more menacing with the ability to move his neck. The costume should NOT look bulky and the cape should be exaggerated (which could be pulled off using the film style of "300"). The actor playing him should be very rugged looking...he should be attractive while still looking like someone who could kick your butt with one good stare (think Kurt Russell in SOLDIER). Martian Manhunter: keep his look and costume similar to the comics - he's an alien, afterall, and he should therefore LOOK alien. Overall, the costume and actor should appear large and bulky (in a powerful way). Flash: a thin material with a form-fitting, streamlined look - no bulky fake muscles. Possibly a shiny, space-age-looking fabric, different from the other characters, that looks like it can handle moving several times the speed of sound. Make his boots look purposeful and his belt, emblem, and mask "wings" look regal, not tacky. Green Lantern: Keep the traditional look of the Hal Jordan costume and make the ring larger and somewhat mechanical looking (i.e. make it believable). Again, I think a raised emblem as opposed to a cloth emblem sewn into the suit would lend a better appearance. A form-fitting padding to the green portion of the costume (esp. in the shoulders) would prevent it from looking like a jumpsuit. His mask needs to strike a balance between seeming like it functions as a mask without drastically restricting peripheral vision (Green Lantern is a soldier/warrior and so should look the part). If there is an Aquaman, his costume should look like it's a part of him (like real scales), but also somewhat armored (think of snakeskin). Overall, these shouldn't look like halloween costumes, but purposeful attire worn by people who are near-gods. The costumes should have a "weight" to them just as the characters themselves should have a presence and charisma that sets them apart from regular people.

    I like...

    by nonsensical

Ryan Reynolds as the Flash (Wally West) and Morena Baccarin as Wonder Woman.

As far as I'm concerned Christian Bale is Batman. Brandon Routhe, if directed by a competant director who gets that he's actually capable of bringing his own skill to the part, could play Superman. We already know he can play Christopher Reeve playing Superman, so he should be able to do the part his own way. If not then... Tom Welling? Dean Kain? Michael Douglas?... no Nicolas Cage... yeah that's the guy.

Green Lantern should be... um... which Green Lantern are we talking about? That sort of makes a difference. I mean I would choose Ron Perlman as Kilowog but that's another story.

I'm not sure it matters who plays Martian Manhunter so long as he can act and has a deep voice.

I'm missing someone... Oh yeah, Fishboy.... I think Fishboy has to appear sort of imperial. He should have something that makes him feel royal. Eh, I don't really care. It's not like Fishboy is going to be doing anything important in the league film save for taking to whales and goldfish. Maybe they should choose a Green Arrow or Atom instead.

I just cannot see this working out right. JLA could be done well, but this is just going to end up a colossal fuck up and people will say that Comic book movies are done for. I like the idea of Batman's Redeye, but I just see this being very cheesy and campy. Like a sillier version of X3. I wish they would just go out of the box on this one. Put it further in the future, make Batman & Superman old. I'm not saying do Kingdom Come, but in the same vein.

What about his bitterness in Mad Men makes anyone think of Supes? Batman, OTOH, maybe.
Don't make me go into the whole SUPERMAN IS NOT BATMAN rant. Hollywood is full of hacks. Since the Big Boyscout is too much work for them to portray interestingly, they punk out and try to morph him into tortured Batman. It is more appealing to them and easier to do. The only problem with that approach is SUPERMAN IS NOT BATMAN.
Brendan Fraiser, yes. Jon Hamm, NO, Hell No. Jim Cazivel, WTF HELL NO. Cazivel would make a perfect Batman though. If anyone could stand up to Bale, it might be Cazivel.

    JLA Movie A Bad Idea

    by barron34

In my opinion, Warners would be safer trying to develop franchises based on the individual members first. Let Nolan finish his Batman trilogy, try to revive the Superman franchise after Singer's misfire, and maybe make stand-alone pics based on individual JLA members. A JLA pic that does poorly will doom any franchise possibility that the second- and third-tier characters might have. They could have a successful movie, and/or franchise for any of the following: Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, the Flash, Green Arrow, and so on. Wonder Woman could be done with in a retro-style, if not as an outright period piece (maybe with a Superman cameo). Green Lantern could be done as an off-world science-fiction epic. The Flash could be more like a colorful sci-fi pic set in a city where the hero fights super-villains. Green Arrow could be a grittier, more realistic superhero flick, done with a lower budget, in the spirit of Nolan's Batman pics, with Black Canary and maybe even a Batman cameo thrown in. There are so many potential movies with these characters, that to make a JLA picture out of the gate is a bad move. If Warners wants the DC version of the X-Men, try a TEEN TITANS movie, or better yet, a JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA pic.

    More thoughts...

    by ninpobugei

CarmillaVonDoom - totally right on...I am 100% into a big, sci-fi epic Green Lantern movie. If they do it right and bring in the Oans and the Corps. and Sinestro, there could be a serious movie here to cross genres (i.e. not just a superhero flick).

Dreadlock Holmes and shitstorm23 - thanks for the compliments, guys. We gotta keep hammering this in the hopes that the powers-that-be will pay attention and realize that our ideas are the way to go .

Barron34 - I agree with you to a point. My idea of making the JL movie look like "300" is that it would be surreal and different enough that other franchises without this "look" could still survive on their own. If they make it a live-action flick in the image of Superman Returns or Batman Begins, I think it will clash heavily with the existing franchises as well as any future franchises that might use different characters. Said another way, I think they can get away with making a JL movie with a different Superman and Batman, but making a Green Lantern, Flash, Wonder Woman, or Aquaman movie AFTER the Justice League could very likely disorient the mainstream viewing public. Using the vast palette of a "300"-like movie would set the JL movie in its own world. Just my opinion, of course.

    by ninpobugei

...that using the vast palette of a "300"-like movie would set the JL movie in its own world and allow other franchises to still be their own animal (if those later movies went with the more realistic approaches of the current movie franchises). And the last point - I think using any "name" actor would be a huge mistake. Case in point: Daredevil. Ben Affleck did a good job, but he was too recognizable to really become Daredevil. No matter what he did, it would be Ben-Affleck-doing-Daredevil, not DAREDEVIL (if that makes sense).

Going with 7 unknowns is a terrible idea.

    by live.

"Unknown" casting works as long as the role is surrounded by known actors. In every superhero movie you can name that stars an unknown, he has a well known support cast. Seven unknowns cast as the leads looks like cheap direct-to-DVD slop. It will look more like the Power Rangers than a summer tent pole. What works in stand alone treatment, will not work in a team up movie.

    Strike

    by #1 zero

I'm pretty sure the pending industry strike (at least of writers and directors) is what is getting this made so quickly. They may go on strike next summer or sooner so to fill the slate for summer 09 the studios are greenlighting a lot of potential blockbusters for that time, JLA being one of them. Really there is no creative reason for this other than to have another tentpole movie since Batman will be next year and Superman 2 is going to be whenever.

    Names vs. No-Names

    by ninpobugei

If a "name" is needed, then use these name actors all in supporting roles...BUT make the heroes themselvs no-name actors/actresses so that they stand on their own merits and fit the physical requirements of the roles. Using a name actor/actress as a central character gets you crap like FANTASTIC FOUR with Jessica Alba/Sue Storm taking center stage when that role SHOULD have gone to Reed Richards. Using name actors does NOT guarantee you a good movie (examples: Batman Returns, Batman & Robin, Batman Forever). An example of a "no-name" carrying the show: the original Superman movie where Christopher Reeve absolutely became Superman. 'Nuff said. Go with the "no-names" that actually fit the roles, NOT "name" actors/actresses that are forced into roles they don't really match. Also, use the money not spent on A-List salaries and put it on the screen where it belongs for this kind of movie!

No Names leads = A-list Villans = No money saved

    by live.

No-name leads don't save a film any money, because the A-list money just goes to the villain or other characters. So it makes no sense from that standpoint.
Christopher Reeve in S:TM proves the point. Marlon Brando anyone? Gene Hackman? Not to mention all the familiar faces of character actors around him. Reeve himself was unknown, but the film wasn't cheap because of it.
Plus, there is the balance of the film to think about. One no-name lead vs. name villan + tons of familiar character actors. That's the formula of success. But like all good recipes, proportion matters. You might think to yourself "Well, if one egg makes my brownies moist and delicious, then seven eggs will surely make it the bestest thing ever!" You will then be left sadly befuddled by the brown sludge that results.
JL has SEVEN leads. Some people aren't getting that. SEVEN. There is no room for the face time that familiar character actors usually get in these films. It is all being taken up by the leads. One name villain can't balance out seven no-name leads on his own. It is a recipe for disaster. Even the villain will be getting only a small fraction of the screen time of the leads. By far, the greatest chunk of this film will be the no-name leads interacting with each other. It's going to come off looking very very cable tv.

Routh was good, but Warner Bros will FUCK THIS UP ANYWAY...

    by big dumb ape

Give me a break about Routh already. In hindsight he was pretty much the only saving grace and only good thing in SUPERMAN RETURNS, whether it was as Clark on in his limited action scenes (of which I'm sure we all agree there should have been A LOT more). But that fault and blame lies on Singer and his two ultra HACK writers, not Routh himself.Well, ok...he wasn't the only good thing. Langella through sheer personality alone made a pretty good Perry White, not that he did much. And Spacey was essentially ok and bombastic as Lex -- but just like Routh there's no question he was hampered by a truly horrendous script and storyline. Fuck. The more I think about it, I really hope those ass wipes who wrote SR are banned from writing for life given how much they truly shitted out one of the most expensive movies ever AND pissed all over decades of continuity for one of the greatest and most recognizable icons ever. That's right -- I'm talking to you, Doughtery and Harris, you stupid TALENTLESS fucks. How you could have truly fucked up Superman THAT much is almost amazing to think about in its own right. But personally I liked Routh, and I think he should be given another shot in this JL movie to continue with the role. He certainly was perfect as Clark -- and as others noted above, if you're going to pick on Routh for imitating Christopher Reeves portrayal to a "T" then that's actually a COMPLIMENT since clearly Singer was trying to make a film that literally matched up with the Reeves continuity and feel. So basically you're giving Routh a hard time for actually doing his job.The only reason I could see NOT putting him in this thing is because you really DO want to send a signal loud and clear that any new Routh Supes movies and any new Bale Bat movies truly are separate to the point of being in a different universe. Though overall I think that's a lame idea as well. And let's face it, we all know what they should have done here. Warners should have gotten off their asses long ago and ALREADY had out a great kick ass Green Lantern movie or a new Wonder Woman film so that after you had Supes, Bat, GL, WW or even the Flash modernized and re-exposed to the public...and after they've all had 1, 2 or 3 films out depending on the character (since the films release schedules would be staggered against each other anyway)...THEN you break out the checkbook and bring all the lead actors together for a true one time EVENT superhero movie. Which has never been done before, certainly not on a true big budget level. But as is always the case with Hollywood and the suits -- and trust me, of this I know since I live and work out here -- once again the studio clods show just how STUPID they actually are, right down to blowing a truly obvious marketing gimmick that could have spelled "blockbuster" right from the start...

Though if they're not using Routh...

I was just cleaning out my TIVO of shows from this week and if we're tosssing names out there, you know who I think could make a good SuperMAN (in other words not the latest pin up boy off the CW)?George Eads from CSI.Seriously, since this thing is supposed to be motion captured anyway ala BEOWULF -- or at least I thought that was the plan still -- check out his IMDB page and look at his profile picture in the upper left corner. Look at that chin and now take his hair and let it grow out and give him a spit curl and tell me that wouldn't make a good alternate Superman. Not to mention he has teh build for the role too...http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0247040/

What is wrong with you kids. In the justice league Superman & Batman should be rugged and older. Like in their 40-50's. hard asses!

Frank Lengella was a terrible Perry White. That was the one that stuck out heavily, he was not perry white at all, like he was sleepwalking in the role. Kate Bosworth was the worst and Routh was not very good, just a zombie, but man langella sucked as White.

Warner Bros has chosen the easy money, and here's why

    by the artist fka vesuvio

JLA is simply a way to dumb down Superman and Batman characters on films so they might appeal to everybody who aren't enjoying their current portrayals on their ongoing solo franchises. And of course, at the same time, try to fill the void left by X-men and his shitty nº3. I fear for what this movie might do for Nolan's Batman, however, it is still difficult for me to actually seeing this thing happening.

Sorry for breathing there, Messi. Some of us are posted overseas and have limited contact but great memories of Mark Waids run on JLA before being shipped out. Just a fan. Thanks for the info about brother Red Eye, I shall have to look it up at my comics store when I get back home.

    My 2 Cents

    by gilbud99

I know someone mentioned it earlier, but an older Batman, Bruce Willis just seems to make a lot of sense. Ryan Reynolds could work as Green Arrow, remember, the Flash is not the only one with smart ass remarks. I keep thinking Vin Diesel as Martian Manhunter. Yeh his range as an actor sucks, but Martian Manhunter has no range of emotion anyway. Carrie-Anne Moss could rock as WW. She could be more of an in between age between Bats and Supes, and some younger actors. How about Gabriel Byrne then as Superman. A good age match for Willis as Batman. Jerry O'Connell for GL.

    Well

    by alphadean

Unfortunately I have no good thought s on ths one. Its Warner Brothers for godsakes. They suck on most levels of Superhero film making. As alaways I will be there on premier night 12 dollars spent, nachow and Soda in hand. And pissed off 90 mins later. The only thing DC/TimeWarner has done right in the last 10 years was Batman Begins. And if any of you bring up that pile of shit called Superman Returns, you need to have your eyes burned out. That movie was useless. So on this one I reserve true enthusiasm until its made and watched

    by axisofpudding

who said a good Justice League movie has to have Supes or Bats? The Nail was a great JLA story, why not do that one? or what about most of the Justice League International era? personally, i'd love to see Blue Beetle and Booster Gold start a vacation resort on Kooey Kooey Kooey. hilarious!!
