Cool News
All Hail Wilhelm!!
Merrick here...
ABC News has posted a short & fun video report about the legendary Wilhelm Scream.
If you know what it is, you may be interested in some of the history here. If you don't know what it is, the term relates to Geeky cool movies like STAR WARS, INDIANA JONES, THE LORD OF THE RINGS, and BATMAN...among many, many other titles.
It's also how I sound every time I...never mind.
You can access the ABC News video HERE. It's in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.
There are also several extensive (and, presumably, incomplete) YouTube compilations of Wilhelm in action. Like, these:

I'm at work and can't access YouTube, however not becuase work forbids it, but because my computer here is old and sucks
-
Man Bay really hates us did u guys see all this shit he said about AICN?
-
It's tradition! Maybe Indy will emit it when he learns that LaBeef is his son...
-
Can we all just agree that YouTube is the largest compendium of useless crap ever foisted on the internet? Every video is grainy, dark, with colors bleeding and sound distortions. I try to avoid it whenever possible, but even in casual surfing, I am assaulted with those big black boxes with links to some supposedly heart-stopping 30 second clip of - let's face it - total crap.
-
also a good band...
-
The rest don't count.
-
you got a link to what Bay said? I'm interested to know what he said.
-
Forgive me
-
true dat..but we will have to suffer with Youtube for a long time until most everyoneget upgraded bandwidth like they have in South Korea.
-
..And thought it was a great piece. I've always noticed that scream. There are even video games that use it. I've wondered about its origin, its great he finally got some recognition.
-
Oh man that's bloody ridiculous, in a hilarious way. But what I want to know is, what's the name of that "applause" track they use for every single bloody crowd-bursting-into-applause scene? Of course I can't describe it--how does one describe applause?--but does ANYone know what I mean? I know they used it in CLERKS the series. The damn track drives me crazy and always takes me out of the story.

Hail to the all pervasive WS...spotted it recently in Death Proo
by KillaKane
When Jungle Jane's pussy possie get smashed by Stuntman Mike, quite a distinct 'Wilhelm' in there amidst the sonic carnage.
-
...but was that added specifically for the DVD? I saw Grindhouse twice in theaters, and didn't notice it until I watched Death Proof on DVD.
-
...that I always seem to pick out too, so I know what you mean, Sam Bluestone. There's a kid that says something like.."Yay yay......awww.....Yay....hee haw" Indescribable, but I can't help but notice it.
I also remember that the show 'Taxi' had this really weird audience member, where there was always this one guy with a weird laugh that went something like, "Hawwwwwww.. . . . hawwwwwww. . . .hawwwwwwww. . . . hawwwww" Weird. They actually keep moles in studio audiences, so there's one, or a few, fake laughers to get people to follow the herd and laugh as well.

Clean house over in the McCoy talkback. If Mori was around he would've already taken care of the problem.

Thank you.

You know what I'm speaking on
-
WTF is that scene with Han Solo and Chewbacca right at the end of the video? Holiday Special?

...is from the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special, where Harrison Ford throws the stormtrooper off the platform at Chewbacca's house. And it looks to be in clear, very good quality. Did Lucas actually allow them to use that clip, despite years of swearing he'd like to see every bootleg copy of that show destroyed? Does this mean we will soon be seeing The Star Wars Holiday Special "Special Edition" 2- disc dvd, with brand new musical number between Jar-Jar and Bea Arthur? Oh, the horror.
-
Can I get the Wilhelm as a down-loadable ring tone??!??!! I must have the Wilhelm as my permanent ring-tone. It will be mine. Oh YES. It will be mine!
-
Listen closely during the vampire town massacre.
-
I believe you're referring to what is affectionately called the "Goofy Holler" (since it was originally so prominently used in Goofy shorts- though it's been used in thousands of shows, shorts and movies since then). http://tinyurl.com/yrglgw

There in the special features of the 2 disc DVD for transformers. He just talked about all the comments and we said and quoted The "Damn you Micheal Bay" Or "your Raping my childhood" and how we just didn't get what he was doing. The funny thing was shia was kinda of a dick about it all. he totally made fun of us he said something "I'm a transformers fan but not like the 25 G1 fans on AICN bitching about the designs" But the way he said it was very shitty like we are bunch of losers or someshit.

INTERESTING FACTOID I NEVER KNEW ABOUT THIS WILHELM SCREAM
by BringingSexyBack
That's the sound I make when I make love to my butt plug.
-
..must be a slow news day.
-
They might as well flash a big message on the screen that says "HEY! YOU'RE WATCHING A MOVIE!"
-
This reminded me of the ending to the De Palma movie where Travolta uses Nancy Allen's dying scream when he's editing a cheap horror movie. Great end to a mediocre movie. Was De Palma inspired by Wilhelm?
-
Lucas especially, for using such an old one. Do people really scream like that when they are shot!
-
so, the Wilhelm scream used to be an inside reference between sound editors. now that michael bay is using it -- it's officially no longer cool. check out the condensed version of the Star Wars holiday special (five minutes) on YouTube. it was pretty darn shocking to hear Wilhelm on that.
-
That one is wayyy more noticable, fake, and shitty. I mainly notice it because it was used in one of the Dark Forces games whenever you fell off a cliff, and since then it sticks out like a sore thumb. It's way way way overused and whenever I hear it it rips me out of whatever film I'm in and places me right in the editing bay watching some shit director scramble to throw in a death scream at the eleventh hour.
-
See Ford passing on his hat to Lucas in this little video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McmogV7EZjY

I'm gonna cry..
-
Oh my god!!!!!
-
That is all.
-
Roger has been writing about this in his "Movie Answer Man" column for quite some time. I'm not sure he ever traced it back to it's origins though.
-
Isn't there also the sitcom laugh, by Lucille Ball's mother, still used today??
-
The Dark Forces scream! I always notice that one too. I think the first time I heard it re-used was in Broken Arrow when some guy gets thrown off a train as it crosses a bridge.

Also, speaking of re-used sound effects let's not forget the noise of doors opening/closing in Doom that turns up all over the place.

There's also a really cheesy scraping noise that gets re-used loads too, usually whenever a cell door or old gate is opened.

Greedo shooting first, Jar Jar Binks, and a stupid fucking scream in every single film he's involved with.
-
I remember watching this YouTube clip about ten years ago (before YouTube). Needs to be updated with LOTR, Spiderman, etc.
-
...without a doubt, is Sully being dropped from a cliff by Schwarzenegger, after telling him he lied that he would kill him last, and Sully yelling, "You L-L-L-ied??!!!" as he falls to his death. Classic.
-
Terrible.
-
Before seeing this article, i always thought the famed Wilhelm Scream was the rrrryeeearRRRRRGH scream... Mainly because i never looked it up... But nonentheless, (sp?), the rrrryeeearRRRRRGH is in many movies/games... I remember it clearly from the sound of selecting a Terran Building in Starcraft... The Science Facility or Barracks, don't reemmber exactly... But i'm sure i've heard the rrrryeeearRRRRRGH in many movies too. Anyway, fun article.
-
People clearly knew which one I was talking about. Apparently I have a future in comic book Onomatopoeia. I hope that in 10 years there is an post on AICN about the infamous rrrryeeearRRRRRGH scream and I'll tell my son that I was the first one to spell it out and he'll say "Dad, why can't you like sports like all my friends' dads." and I'll say lovingly "Shut up son."
-
Where a stormtrooper gets shot on the bridge in the most classic fun scene of perhaps all time.
-
I laughed my frakin head off when I saw Ratatouille and before they played the short 'Lifted' and of course I knew about the Wilhelm scream, what am I a frakin idiot over here? It's also brilliantly used in Tarantino's 'Death Proof' about 57:30 into the film, during the 'head on crash' oops, spoiler. That's not even the end, don't worry.
-
every time I hear it.
-
I never thought it would happen.........but it did. Well done Merrick.
-
Its all over that movie. Wish i didn't know about this thing so I could enjoy going to movies in blissful ignorance.
-
I can't view YouTube anymore here at work, but I sent the link to my home PC so I can cry about it later. Tell me it isn't literally Ford putting the cap on Shia. Or if it is, it's not while the cameras are actualyl rolling. Just a goof-off.
-
Just for old time's sake and his comments on the TINO DVD.
-
Don't worry, finky. It's those geeky tears of joy.
-
Just modified.

BREAKING NEWS: HULK HOGAN CAST FOR THE WILHELM SCREAM SEQUEL
by Pound Sand
"AAAAAAAAAiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiirrrrrrrrrrrrrghhhhghhghghghhhhhh , Brother !"
-
Thank jeebus I'm not the only person who noticed that scream used over and over (I thought I was some kind of scream detecting freak). What amazes me is how many other people call it the "Dark Forces Scream" like myself. That's the one I want the history of.
-
Hahaha! I can't believe they used the Star Wars Holiday Special (i.e. All in the Famiwook.)
-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejrlqcNnu7g
-
It's a fartmark on sound design.
-
That's what I'm calling the other scream people refer to. I love that scream so much and it always cracks me up when it's used in a movie. That stupid thing has to be in 1000 movies. Who cares about the Wilhelm scream when you have the EEEYEAAARGGGHH scream.
-
because I want to use the EEEYEAAAAAAAAAAAAA scream so bad.
-
What's the official name for that grunt that everyone who falls to the ground on "Kung Fu" always emitted? It was used over and over and over and over, no matter who the person was, how old they were, or how much of an impact they made. You know the sound I'm talking about! I must know.
-
right after reading about it. It was like an audio where's waldo like another poster remarked.
-
That was hilarious, at the end of "Lifted". When the scream came, I laughed, and I wasn't the only one in the theater to do so. Great stuff.
-
That must have taken forever to compile those videos. Just identifying the films! Sheesh, some people have some time!

The reeeearrgghHHHHHHH scream was used in Broken Arrow
by Osmosis Jones
When Christian Slater kicks Howie Long to his death from ther train, Howie does the reeeearrrrgggHHHHHHHHHHHH scream all the way down. That clip's on YouTube somewhere. There's also this stock female scream I hear a lot (you can hear it on one of the TV spots on the Willard DVD).
-
There is one other scream then the ones everyone has mentioned here that I ALWAYS notice and it is really annoying. It is that absurd and long female scream that is in three parts like ahhhhhh--ah ah-ahhhhhhh. It is used all the time and still gets used. I'm sure most film makers know about these screams, it is easy enough to just get someone on the staff to do a scream.
-
the rusty door opening, you hear it in cartoons and in T3
-
I smile every time I hear it. Always have, always will.
-
sound designer/editor on about half of those examples. He is a wilhelm fanatic! You can check out his work building the sound library in the first 10 years of Skywalker sound (then called Sprocket Systems) here in this short You Tube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRGdWocU9ag
-
Is it the female scream that almost sounds like a dog being kicked? A really high pitched yelp? If so, thats another one you hear all the time, and its used in commercials alot for comedic effect too.
-
I think so. It is really long. They always use it when the person screaming is off camera in films because I think if anyone actually saw anyone screaming like that they would be like "wtf". Only movie I can really think of off my head that definitely has it is Scream, but I hear it all the time.
-
I know the scream that you're talking about. Does anyone have that one on youtube? My wife thinks I'm crazy, but when I was in high school I had a keychain that made that scream so I always recognize it when I hear it again. It was on "Pushing Daisies" a couple of weeks ago when someone was watching a violent show on tv. And it was the scream Darla made in the first ep of Buffy when Willow threw holy water at her.
-
...when I think of that female scream, is when Van Wilder sees sick boy's goiter, and its played for comedic effect. The other is on the Simpsons, the 'Rear Window' episode where Flanders screams like a woman because of his dead plant.
-
There is a thunder sound effect that you hear mainly on British TV all the time, but here and there in movies too. It's really irritating because a) It's the only one they ever seem to use, and b) it sounds like no thunder clap that I've ever heard in my life. It's kind of like "Cha-cha-CHA-cha-cha-boooooooom" rather than just a straightforward loud booming rumble.
-
another one I hear alot is the police scanner. something along the lines of "code 6, 105 northbound route 52"... something like that. or this one (which can be heard at the beginning of this music video [http://tinyurl.com/2x7kwk]) i hear ALOT
-
I will have to keep an ear out for it from now on
-
knowing about the fucking Will Helm scream will ruin almost every movie you hear it in. It'll pull you right out of the experience and make you think 'oh-thats the will helm scream' how fucking cheap they used it. Movie ruined. I think its some kind of free masons/secret government conspirecy to fucking ruin movies for people who know about it.
-
Was also used for the roar in a 'talking' Jurassic Park velociraptor figure at one point in the mid '90s.
-
I think the female scream people are talking about also shows up in 'Interview with a Vampie' (when Lestat first shows and kills the hooker with Louis), in 'Copycat' (looped when Helen gets the creepy e-mail) and 'Spiderman' (when the Green Goblin turns and attacks Spiderman in the burning building after posing as a woman in trouble). Anyone else remember where else this scream was used? Does it have a nickname like the Wilhelm, too?
