Learn What THE WIRE Creator David Simon Hopes To Depict In His Next HBO Series!!
SPOILER ALERT !!
I am – Hercules!!
“The Wire” creator David Simon hopes his next HBO series will deal with musicians in post-Katrina New Orleans, according to a story to be published in Monday morning’s New Yorker.
Also? An interesting excerpt from an Associated Press report regarding Simon’s current HBO project:
The fifth and final season of HBO's "The Wire" begins in January, this time focusing on layoffs at The Sun — where Simon once worked — and how newspapers fail to capture certain complex truths. Previous seasons of the acclaimed drama have featured drug dealers, struggling longshoremen, city politicians and inner-city students.

I thought this show was about drugs. Wrong again, liberal media.

What, since the Wire was completely underrated and under-awarded, David Simon is taking the easy route to an emmy? Because, you know, a series about post-Katrina musicians is going to garner gobs of awards. Why not just do a series about the inner workings of the U.N., where every spoken word needs subtitled, like Studio 60 suggested. That will get you a few of those gold statues, or whatever color they are. I couldn't tell, that rotunda fox used for the emmies was horribly lit.
-
'lighted'? Oh well.

Anything at all?

I think i'm just bitter about the Wire coming to an end. I'll still watch anything David Simon does. I know a lot of people here hype-up The Wire to an insane amount but its all true. The show really is that good. There is no other show as complex and rewarding. I just finished watching the series over again and realized I missed so much. Can't wait for the 5th season.

show is trash
-
...who had a similar obsession on Studio 60.I'll watch, as long as there's a Curb Your Enthusiasm crossover where the Leon character from New Orleans shows up. Fucking hilarious.
-
Genius from front to back, start to finish. Cannot wait for the new season, just sad that it will be the last.
-
Best show on TV.
-
Assuming it hasn't been cancelled by that point...
-
Bring on the emmy's for christ sake!
-
Even better than the Soprano's....FACT
-
Over on this side of the atlantic not many people know about the show. Any mates I have turned on to it have become big fans.

Anyone who doesn't recognize just how amazing The Wire really is needs to have their head examined. It's not Hollywood glitz and glamour. It is real. David Simon (a former crime beat reporter in Baltimore) and Ed Burns (a former Baltimore Homicide cop) created this show out of the reality they saw every day for 20+ years. This is how it really is, and you can understand that even more when you read "Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets" by Simon. You'll recognize a lot of the true stories in this book as parts of The Wire episodes. Just because it doesn't have dramatic music leading to crazy Hollywood gunfights, explosions and car chases does not make it garbage. This is the best show on TV by far, and they do something few others are willing to do...they show the truth, whether you like it or not. So if you don't like it fine, but calling it trash just shows how ignorant you are of the real world. Flashy high-budget shows are fine and enjoyable, but just because you don't like it doesn't mean you shouldn't respect it. As for the fifth season, don't worry. When they say it is about newspapers, that doesn't mean everything else that has been so good for 4 seasons is gone. The drugs, investigation, murder, etc. are all still there. This season is meant to show how the media fails to capture the reality of what is happening and how they contribute, positive or negative, to the situation. It also highlights how police can use the media to it's advantage, and how reporters can also seriously hurt investigations. As a freelance journalist myself, I can promise you this season will not let you down. Watch if you want. Just have some faith. Also, Simon said in interviews that Jimmy McNulty is back at the center of things this years and makes a huge impact.
-
The sad thing is that McNulty found some kind of peace in season 4... but The Wire doesn't do "happy endings". You can bet that being back on a murder investigation will somehow lead Jimmy to fuck up the good things he has going in his life.
-
He's got that Maryland accent down to an art! I saw him in an interview and was shocked, had NO idea he wasn't American.
-
bleh!
-
Yup... but you know why it gets little to no attention? Why it gets no awards? Because it is full of black actors putting in better performances than the white actors the academy so loves. White Emmy voters just don't give black people awards unless they get big ratings.
-
I shit you not!! I tried to watch this show when the first season aired and could not get into it, the pace was just too damn slow. Then season 4 rolled around and the non-stop praise for this show was driving me crazy, so I tivo'ed the whole season. I sat down and watched it in 3 days and was blown away with how this show really takes TV to the next level. There is no cheese. There is nothing touched up to wash away your guilt for realizing you are probably the type of person who complains about crime, poverty, corruption, and lack of education in your community but really does nothing to combat it. It just slaps you in the face and tells you to wake the fuck up. After watching season 4 I went back and bought season 1-3 on DVD and have come to the conclusion that so few others (and those few are very vocal) seemed to have reached. That The Wire is one of the best shows to have ever aired on American Television and that how this show has not received any Golden Globes or Emmys is just flat out embarrasing for the Television Broadcasting community. I have to say I'm jazzed about the idea of D.Simon tackling post Katrina New Orleans because KVille had an incredible opportunity to spotlight a city spiraling fast and being forgotten by most of America but of course glamified it and killed any chance of it being taken seriously. I'm sure no one will watch it and instead claim they love shitty shows like "John From Cincinnati" more, but at least some of the bright few will relish in a show that transcends TV and becomes modern day art.
-
I love this show. Long live Omar. I want a crossover with Omar in Dexter.
-
Maybe I am thinking of something else. Anyone?
-
Anyone who thinks The Wire is trash must think Law & Order is quality television. The Wire is hands-down the best show on TV, best actors, best writing, best everything. And I haven't even seen Season 4 yet, since I don't have HBO. I'm catching up on Deadwood in the meantime.
-
everything he touches turns to gold. i really hope his next series is ongoing, not just a mini.
-
or in the Sun's case, any truth at all. Light for all, facts for none
-
If it's even possible to create a show that less people watch and care about than The Wire, this would surely be it!
-
****Possible Spoillers*****I think the ending for the new mayor is coming. It's a variation on what happened to the mayor of Providence, RI a few years ago. I think Simon is going to have the corrupt state senator get busted, cut a deal, name evryone he shook down, and Carcetti will be the one doing serious time for corruption. The paper will lead the charge to nail the mayor, missing the point that Carcetti is really a small fish in the world of Maryland political corruption.****End SpoilersAs for McNulty, I agree with those who suspect all will not be well in his world. Also when I watch Law and Order I always wonder which cast member from "The Wire" will be guest starring that episode. Finally, one of the greatest scene in the show's history is the crime scene investigation from season 1 where the only word Bunk and McNulty keep saying is "Fuck."-----later-----m
-
...but I don't see Clay Davis going down. The man's a cockroach. I do agree that someone will find some way to take Carcetti down, though. Good guys don't get happy endings on the Wire.
I mean, I feel pretty confident that they'll put Marlo away, but that's only a happy ending if your scope is as limited as other cop shows' are. In the big picture, it don't mean a thing. -
I agree, the whole thing with Carcetti getting voted in and deciding to turn things round for the better in the police - to stop duking the stats and all that - just isn't what The Wire is all about. I kept waiting for the downside, the moment where it all fell apart. This has got to happen in series 5 as that is what the prog is all about - people who try their best with honest motives get shat on from a great height by the people with power who are only interested in preserving the status quo. Carcetti will come unstuck, Snoop & Marlo will go down but Marlo will escape. Corruption charges may get some of the politicians and I'm predicting death for more central characters - the shows got to go out on a low(=high). I love The Wire and I'm British where the shows only on a totally obscure satellite channel!! God bless the internet.
-
...is that they renewed The Wire for seasons 4 and 5. Season 3 could have been the end, it even wrapped most of the loose ends for the series, but apparently someone has some sense up at HBO and gave them a greenlight for 2 more seasons. The Wire is the one show that actually lives up to HBO's tagline. I'm renewing my HBO when the next season shows up, and I'll stick around for anything David Simon involved in.
-
but the first few episodes bored me and i wasn't interested enough to keep watching in hopes i'd see the "brilliance" of it.
-
Only problem? It's literally ruined much of the rest of TV for me. I'm trying to like Dexter, but every time the "police work" aspect of the show takes center stage, I'm like "Ah this is retarded." And that's only because of the Wire. Also - the CSI/Law and Orders of the world used to be passable entertainment to me; nothing great, but something I could zone out to when I didn't feel like paying attention to the TV. Now? Once again, I'm like "This is retarded." Can't watch 'em any more even in passing.
-
I've been hearing rumors that he returns, and would love nothing more than to see the fallen King back in the mix, but has anyone gotten any confirmation?
This whole mess started with Avon, so it's only right that it end with him.
-
He fucked the schools for a maybe shot at the Governeorship in four years time. He's like all the rest. Reformers in our political system are just as corrupt as any other politician. Carcetti was never anything else, he just knew the right things to say to get elected.
-
Never ceases to amaze me how a cat 5 hurricane managed to hit only one city.
-
And that is no understatement. I watched all the seasons of Buffy and Angel. I use to really be in love with the Sopranos as well. But The Wire is literally the best thing I have ever seen produced on television. Add to the fact that Season 4 left me literally in tears at its conclusion, you can consider me a Wire junkie. Season 4 was the best one yet in my opinion. Closely followed by seasons 3,1, and 2.

Thanks to all of the people around here who have been recommending The Wire for years.Where I live the FX channel started showing it from the first episode in the summer so I jumped in and they have just shown the last episode of series 1,series 2 starts next week. This programme has impressed me on a number of different levels. The first episode had a pace I wasn't used to but I pesevered due to the TB's I had read(and forgotten luckily,I need to watch this spoiler free ;>)and by the end of it I was in it.Poor doomed D'Angelo.Anyway,I just wanted to pass through and pay my respects............
