Serious question. I understand that we would pay for our tickets (if we are out of town) and accomodations. But how much would be expect to pay for admittance and other such things. Thanks.

Harry likes to bring in BNAT virgins. i've been to one but i'm claiming the right of secondary virginity because everyone claims that BNAT 6 pales in comparison to pretty much all others.

I'm not sure what the final ticket price is - that is usually decided by Tim League once the line-up is finalized and we know what the cost for film shipping is for the films we're bringing in. I believe it's usually under a $100. Nordling, How much has BNAT been the last two years?

Yeah, so every year I apply with this naive idea that I have a chance. *sigh* and I'll do it again this year. 'cause damnit. I'm gonna make it to one of these things if it KILLS me!
Oct. 13, 2007, 1:39 a.m. CST
If I recall correctly, last year he specified that half the tickets would go to females and half to males. But I think that actually makes it UN-fair. I mean, yes, there are definitely female readers here, but by far I'd say the majority are male. So why give like 20% of the people (Just an example, I'm guessing) a shot at 50% of the tickets, while the other 80% (males) have to fight for only 50% of them? Shouldn't they be chosen on even-playing-field application criteria and ignore things like gender? Ideally, choosing a random sample of the applicants would result in the same gender percentage of attendees as there are readers.

of course, by complaining I'm probably hurting my chances. But it's just an observation, and a valid one at that.

harry, you say that you want a clear photo of your pic on your lisence but the image size you ask for is rectangular, suggesting that you would want to see the whole thing, and the second problem is, that mine has an Ohio seal on it and no matter what I do, ever scan of it makes the actual picture come out a little blurry. what do you want exactly?
Oct. 13, 2007, 2:28 a.m. CST
it can be square, 320x320 is the new minimum for the ID photo. sorry for the confusion.

I'm looking for any excuse, really.
Oct. 13, 2007, 7:34 a.m. CST
Last year and the two previous years BNAT was $60. However, it's worth waaay more than that.
Oct. 13, 2007, 9:33 a.m. CST
That's not bad at all, £30 for 24 hours of filmic bliss. Hopefully I will have enough money saved for BNAT 11! This is the one time of the year where I always resent being a UK resident.
Oct. 13, 2007, 9:51 a.m. CST
Actually - it isn't a 50/50 split - more like 60% male / 40% female. And the reason is about Bathroom lines. If I allowed it to be 80% male, the bathroom breaks would need to be 25-30 minutes instead of 10 to 15minutes - due to the lines. That difference would mean one less film. This isn't bullshit, it's a proven fact based on hard experience in the first 4 years of BNAT.
Oct. 13, 2007, 12:32 p.m. CST
...but want the ass-numbing experience of watching 24 hours of movies, there's a 24 hour horror marathon in Philadelphia in a few weeks. Tickets are $20 instead of $60, but the downside is you won't likely run into any celebrities. Just lots of smelly nerds. Info's at www.exhumedfilms.com

That would make a wicked BNAT poster... hmmmm....

I could probably be quizzed on any review of any movie by Harry/Mori/Capone/Vern (the best truly) and hit the money. I know all the overplayed tag lines that have been used. I have had about 3 different handles, the best being SamuraiJackBauer which I can't use now because I lost the password about a year or two ago. I was banned once for accidentally expanding a coxial under Atribiance. It is a dream of mine to actually go to BUTT NUMB which may be sad to some but would rock for me. I live in Canada and have only ever been to Seattle. I own an HD-DVD player because Harry plugged them, oh and I love it. Basically I am the biggest fanboy of AICN I know, and since no one I know knows about it, I look like the movie guru to everyone around me. Which is actually pretty cool. I have about 400 DVD's which means I could have put a downpayment on a house if I had my priorities straight. Damn, now that I read what I just wrote I realize that I have spent 9 years as a Dark Passenger on this site with the showrunners not even realizing I am stalking them... its weird. Contributing in silence. My damn dog is named Jack Bauer and I learned to love and now hate that show on this site. AICN is the biggest influence outside of family, work, friends in my life. Surely the biggest impetus to spend. I'm 31 now and I started on this site in my early 20's, crazy.

Oct. 16, 2007, 2:06 p.m. CST
is it looking like there will be more or less seating than at the original location? I remember reading a blog earlier on in the year that mentioned it but it just slipped the mind.

I am anxious. I have to finish my pics and get my brother's application and pics so's I can send them asap. I hope that the new Alamo Ritz is ready to be broken-in by a bunch of asses, 'cause it's about to be part of an awesome sit-in!
Oct. 16, 2007, 6:24 p.m. CST
I'd be a liar to say I wasn't excited about this. I wonder how many seats The Ritz has. Offhand, I remember the guest list being at less than 200 two years ago.

Oct. 17, 2007, 2:30 p.m. CST
Is it OK if there's someone else in the pic and I just black out their face or does it have to be just me in the pic?
Oct. 17, 2007, 6:30 p.m. CST
Do what I did: move to Austin. I lived in Washington up until last May, and I think it's the best decision I may have ever made (don't tell my wife). Strange as it may sound, AICN was one of the main reasons I thought about moving to Austin for, especially with BNAT looming on the horizon every year. Plus, we have SXSW, ACL, the Drafthouses, and awesome food - what's not to like?
Oct. 17, 2007, 6:38 p.m. CST
Hey assholes, read what Harry wrote in the article. Head Shot: CROPPED. If you don't know how to pirate and install PHOTOSHOP, then use MS PAINT! If you aren't computer geeky enough to be able to do that, then I don't think Harry wants you there anyway.
Oct. 17, 2007, 7:12 p.m. CST
I've seen this BUTT-THON thing whatever it is for years on AICN. I just ignore it though. The title made it seem boring. I don't feel like reading about it either.
Oct. 17, 2007, 9:24 p.m. CST
Others have come from the UK or even farther. Totally worth it and Austin is a great town. And a headshot is a headshot people - read the fricken directions!

Hey Harry, I want to change my favorite toy to the Evil Knievel bike doll jumping thing! Though the sit-n-spin was cool too.

So, this is probably stupid to ask, but...what exactly do you want for this...Is it something that Jack has said in BTILC that relates to question 15...or do you want us to make something up that Jack might have said about question 15, or is it just something Jack might say about anything in general?
Oct. 19, 2007, 1:48 a.m. CST
What is your favorite color?
Oct. 19, 2007, 9:08 a.m. CST
Dude - the questions are an invitation to personality and creativity, so just answer the question any way that you think reflects you. If you're literal, just quote from the movie; if you're meta-literal, quote from the movie as it relates to your Q15 answer; otherwise, put yourself in the character's wife-beater and live the dream... By the way, when are people going to start posting their answers to some of the questions? Seems like that always happens and they're fun to read. Maybe after the 22nd due date?
Oct. 19, 2007, 11:20 p.m. CST
"I've seen this BUTT-THON thing whatever it is for years on AICN. I just ignore it though." FAIL! Ah, BNAT. I love the challenge to get in. I love the heady feeling of desperation waiting for Halloween like its Christmas morning and you're finding out that you either get the Millennium Falcon or your mom thinks you shouldn't be stereotypical and you get a Cabbage Patch Kid instead. God, please, let it be the Millennium Falcon this year. Please, please, please, please.
Oct. 20, 2007, 11:46 a.m. CST
We sent our groups applications in this morning. I hope like hell I get in this year. Not going last year was a sad thing indeed. But I am ever the optimist, and excited about doing this at the old Ritz location. For the first time ever I've found a girlfriend who wants to go with me ... should be awesome.

I went to BNAT 7. It was one of the most fun experiences ever. If you get in to BNAT 9, you should DEFINITELY go!!
Oct. 22, 2007, 12:58 p.m. CST
I sent the ap yesterday, so happy to get the pics problems all fixed, and forogt to attach the damn things. I had to re-send when I realized my error this morning. D'oh! I had trouble finding just the right mustache. I was dressed as Burt Reynolds, in the Firebird Trans Am that my team and I (Team BANDIT) won in the Rolling Roadshow scavenger hunt hosted by Tim and Karrie and all the rest 'o those fine folks. So, my costume was me, wearing The Alamo (we named the car that) and dressed in cowboy hat, red shirt and mustache. And lipstick. 'Cause I am a girl. So, here's hoping that Harold likes a cross-dressing Burt Reynolds wannabe. Wish me luck! ...and, is Smallerdemon not applying? I called him last week, and didn't get a call back yet.
Oct. 22, 2007, 9:54 p.m. CST

My guess is you answered "no" to the Male or Female question. Do I win something? :)
Oct. 23, 2007, 9:50 a.m. CST
1. Full Name? Seth XXXXXXXXX 2. Online Aliases? thecrazyarmenian 3. Age? 30-I hate typing that 4. Sex? Male 5. City, State, Country? Boston, MA, United States of America 6. Number of people submitting in your group, counting yourself? 2 (my brother's is below) 7. Have you ever attended a BNAT before, if so, which one(s)? No, But in my mind I've been going since LOTR:FOTR played. 8. Occupation? Director of 2 Residence Halls at XXXXXX University in Boston. I have great stories and pictures of me doing the same job at UC-Santa Barbara. I'll trade for tickets. 9. Hobbies? Part time PhD student, Part time college instructor, wishing I were surfing 3 days a week like I used to, lowering my GPA with my Wii, being a good husband and sampling interesting craft beer, usually at the same time. 10. Celebrity Sexual Fantasy? I'm a married man so something simple like Melissa Joan Hart (5 years ago) would be just fine thank you. Please see by brother below for more deviance, he’s pretty dead on about Portman. 11. Favorite Childhood Toy & Why? My brother. He was very life-like and my mom fixed him when I broke him. 12. Favorite Film Experience & Why? Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring. I had gotten 1 semester behind in my master's program, and thought about dropping out. A friend motivated me to get all my papers from the Spring semester done, as I was writing all of my papers for Fall 2002. I finished my last paper around 9AM and went straight to the FOTR showing, having accomplished one of the greatest tasks I had ever accomplished, and not having slept the night before, or much at all that month. Every time I put that DVD on, (and here comes the geek gush) I honestly feel a warming in my heart and a longing for a time in my life that is gone. The haunting words of Blanchette's Galadriel, those first notes of Shore's score, the amazing mini-movie at the beginning, and (now with the extended DVD) spending time in the pastoral and innocent world of hobbits, it does something for me that no other film can. I love it like no other. 13. Top 3 Future Films You Hope To See This Year At BNAT? Watchmen- I’ll be wearing diapers in case this gets played. John Rambo- Vegas odds are 80-20 in favor of at least some version of this playing and I can't wait to see some badasskickery! The Dark Knight- I know it's too early, but a girl can dream. 14. Top 3 Vintage Films You Hope To See This Year At BNAT? The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzi Across the 8th Dimension (I'm assuming that we're being treated to Big Trouble in Little China, so this should play just before) Coonskin (Bakshi)-I think the audience is smart enough to understand it’s satire. Meet the Feebles-seeing this in an Austin theatre with a BNAT crowd at around 6AM… 15. Biggest Trouble You've Been In Personally? I can't commit an honest answer to this email, but it does involve me running a dormitory of 18-19 year olds in California...please use your imagination. 16. What would Jack Burton Say? Sit tight, keep the home fires burning, and if we're not back by dawn, call the vice-president. He also might ask youtube to delete The Coupe De Ville's music video, Carpenter can direct, but keep him away from the guitar. 17. Favorite John Carpenter Film? The Thing-I watched it on video with my best friend when I was 13 and it scared the jebezus outta us. 18. Favorite Kurt Russell Film? Big Trouble in Little China- I know I'm not making myself stand out of the crowd here, but I used to love watching it with my brother, he likes it even more than me. 19. Favorite Genre Bending Film That Blew Your Mind? Brazil. It’s more potent, thought-provoking and difficult now than upon its release. Sci-fi? Political Satire? Love story? Comedy? Noir? All. 20. Why do you wish to attend Butt-Numb-A-Thon? To have the memory of a lifetime with my brother...and something to get into an argument with my wife about "the rationality of buying a plane ticket to Austin for a couple of movies." 21. what is your email address? XXXXXXXX Entry # 2 1. Full Name? Adam XXXXXXXX 2. Online Aliases? spin zero 3. Age? 25 4. Sex? Male 5. City, State, Country? Allston, MA, USA 6. Number of people submitting in your group, counting yourself? 2 7. Have you ever attended a BNAT before, if so, which one(s)? No 8. Occupation? Physics Grad Student 9. Hobbies? Other than watching movies and reading aintitcool.com? Red Sox, Magic: the Gathering, eating cheese, drinking maple syrup 10. Celebrity Sexual Fantasy? Did you see those pictures of Michelle Trachtenberg as Snow White on Halloween last year? Yeah. Then there's Kate Beckinsale in Underworld, Emmanuelle Beart as a French maid in 8 femmes, Famke Janssen as Jean Grey, Natalie Portman as anything. It's a tough call. As dirty as it is though, I'm gonna have to go with both Gilmore Girls at the same time. Yeah, that's right. 11. Favorite Childhood Toy & Why? Mr. Machine - It annoyed my older brother (who I'm submitting with) to no end. 12. Favorite Film Experience & Why? Cha No Aji (The Taste of Tea). When I lived in San Francisco I would go to the SF Indie Film Festival (which rocks) and I saw this film without any expectation and without having seen anything else by Katsuhito Ishii. It was one of the greatest surprises I've ever experienced. It's maybe the sweetest (in the cute not awesome sense, though it is awesome) film I've ever seen, but without being cloying. The mixture of ridiculous over-the-top characters with super-reserved and laid-back characters is something that I've rarely seen handled so smoothly. I ended up going to the second screening as well and brought some friends. They all loved it as well. 13. Top 3 Future Films You Hope To See This Year At BNAT? Midnight Meat Train (or is this coming out sooner?) The Curious Case of Benjamin Button Where the Wild Things Are or Coraline (Watchmen if an early cut is ready by then!) 14. Top 3 Vintage Films You Hope To See This Year At BNAT? The Beaver Trilogy Naisu No Mori: The First Contact (The Funky Forest) (not really vintage, but I just want to see it again) Seven Samurai 15. Biggest Trouble You've Been In Personally? Being attacked by a wild peregrine falcon. It clawed my head with its talons. It was not a nice falcon. 16. What would Jack Burton Say? You just listen to the ol' Pork-Chop Express and take his advice on a dark and stormy night. When some wild-eyed, eight-foot-tall maniac grabs your neck, taps the back of your favorite head up against the Drafthouse wall, looks you crooked in the eye and asks you if ya sent Adam and Seth's tickets, you just stare that big sucker right back in the eye, and you remember what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like that: "Have ya sent their tickets, Harry?" "Yessir, the tickets are in the mail." 17. Favorite John Carpenter Film? Big Trouble in Little China, though I love me some The Thing and Halloween 18. Favorite Kurt Russell Film? Big Trouble in Little China (is this a test?), though I love me some The Thing and Backdraft 19. Favorite Genre Bending Film That Blew Your Mind? Naisu No Mori. This movie is absolutely insane. It's more completely without genre than genre bending though. Katsuhito Ishii is a genius. 20. Why do you wish to attend Butt-Numb-A-Thon? There is far too much sensation in my butt right now. If only there were some way... Seriously, though, I want to spend some quality time with my brother without actually having to talk to him. Please send us to Butt-Numb-A-Thon!!! 21. what is your email address? XXXXXXX

HARRY!!!! Do you know that the Texas Bar exam results come out the same day that results of BNAT app's???? Do you have any idea how stressful this is going to be for me!?!?!?! Please!!! I don't know how much rejection I can take!?!!!
Oct. 24, 2007, 10:57 a.m. CST
You do know that bar results come in on November 2nd, right? That's not exactly October 31st, so no need for the waterworks. I wonder just how many law students/lawyers applied for this? I graduate in May.
Oct. 24, 2007, 9:59 p.m. CST
by Johnny Law
Well, yes, but there's a really good chance the division chief in my office will be able to get the results on Halloween. So - yes. Stress. No idea how many law related people are applying - but, for the amount of AICN reading I did during Property II - I'd assume it was a seizable number.
Oct. 25, 2007, 9:21 a.m. CST
"I'd assume it was a seizable number" - You lawyers, always trying to seize assets and other folks' property! Scum o' the earth, I tell ya! Kidding - wife's a lawyer who went to BNAT last year with me, so I feel for ya, waiting on the Bar results. Good luck.
Oct. 25, 2007, 1:18 p.m. CST
The suspense. The rush of hoping. The mind numbingly slow pace between the application submitted and the answers revealed. I might just go mad!
Oct. 25, 2007, 1:36 p.m. CST
I agree. I can't eat. I can't sleep. I can't enjoy the pre-Halloween festivities. All I can do is sit at my computer, log onto this site, and hit refresh every five minutes. It's freakin ridiculous.
Oct. 25, 2007, 3:54 p.m. CST
into the future... I wanna go so badly. I hope I get in. I hope my pic is good enough. I am trying to look like Burt Reynolds in it. and, i am a girl.
Oct. 30, 2007, 10:10 a.m. CST
I have an anxious stomach about it every time I think of it. I want to go so badly. Sound off where you're coming from, if you get in. I am from Atlanta, and my brother lives in Dallas. Where are you from?
Oct. 30, 2007, 11:22 a.m. CST
I'm from Austin (boring, I know) but I believe that in the past BNAT has had visitors (and not just the movie big wigs) from as far away as England and even New Zealand.

Oh yeah. I am starting to wonder a lot. San Francisco. BTW, Grendy, I finished the BNAT8 Retrospective. :) Just click on Harry's link to the LJ group above and it's linked in my most recent post on the LJ group.

I am in Tampa. I drove down for Fantastic Fest, but would fly in for this if I got in.
Oct. 30, 2007, 5:12 p.m. CST
I just went and looked at it. Well done, sirrah, as always. Raw force was there, wasn't it? I thought I saw about .2 seconds of a poster or something. ha. As for time results are posted... sooner the better, I think. Also... those here might need to join the myspace group that Miyazaki set up. Find people there.
Oct. 30, 2007, 8:47 p.m. CST
Santa Maria, California here. Is it Halloween yet?? :)
Oct. 30, 2007, 9:04 p.m. CST
Austin, Tejas (it means friendship)... last year the posting of names came mid-morning, I think. When I saw my wife and my names I woo-hoo'ed and then had to explain what it was I was going on about to my co-workers...funny looks from the people that can't understand why you have to apply for a 24-hour movie extravaganza. I love it.
Oct. 30, 2007, 9:52 p.m. CST
Marina Del Rey, CA here, and I applied with my dad, who lives in Frederick, MD. I went to BNAT 7 and had the time of my life. I didn't get accepted to BNAT 8, which really stung. Man, I really want to go this year.
Oct. 30, 2007, 10:02 p.m. CST
I felt I gave it the attention it deserved. I believe that my attention to The Informer more than makes up for any loss of attention that Raw Force received in the retrospective. *heh heh* In looking back on BNAT8 I realized that The Informer might very well have been in my top 3 films. Black Book, Black Snake Moan and The Informer ultimately were my favorites. Initially, I didn't care for The Informer, but Harry was spot on about the performance in it being spectacular. Even pulling the clips for it I felt real emotion in that performance of Gypo. It's not a feel good movie, either, so the placement of the clips with the music in the retrospective are there for a poignant irony. :::The Great Pumpkin - *heh* I've been explaining BNAT to co-workers and they always say the same thing, the cowards: "I don't think I could watch that many movies in a row." COWARDLY JACKANAPES!

Bar results either today or tomorrow - BNAT results, today...SOMETHINGS GOTTA GIVE!!!! Comin from Houston by the way.
Oct. 31, 2007, 10:04 a.m. CST
I hear you, I waited too long for my bar results, and honestly, the wait for this is more stressful! I wish there had a been a 3 day test for BNAT, that you had to go to school for 3 years to get to go to, I would feel much better about my odds!
Oct. 31, 2007, 10:44 a.m. CST
I am just refreshing like a bastard here, waiting for news. I want to go! and Johnny...what time do you hear your bar exam results?
Oct. 31, 2007, 11:01 a.m. CST
Johnny, good luck on the bar, as we all await word on BNAT, we can at least all be here for you.
Oct. 31, 2007, 11:09 a.m. CST
from ohio here. with plenty of time too take off work I hope the results come in soon.
Oct. 31, 2007, 12:23 p.m. CST
I have been scoping out plane ticket prices, and it will cost me (if I get in) about $250 for tix alone. I have taken another 2nd job (have one at a non-profit theatre already) to help with expenses. If anyone's coming from Atlanta, please let me know, maybe we can book flights together!
Oct. 31, 2007, 12:23 p.m. CST
I keep checking about every 5 minutes or so. I'll keep doing it until I head out tonight to downtown Austin for the parade of half naked women in costume. I just hope it's not to much longer ... the suspense is killing me. :)
Oct. 31, 2007, 1:16 p.m. CST
It's been awfully quiet around here. Unless someone's busy updating the node with the list!
Oct. 31, 2007, 1:59 p.m. CST
Well there's no telling when it'll be updated. It all depends on the number of entries they got this year. In the past it's been a huge amount of submissions and they only have so many people to sift through it all. I don't envy that task.

Bar results are supposed to be posted today or tomorrow. If I pass, I become a Houston DA (I'm interning there right now) if I fail, I'm fired, and can't reapply until results from the next bar exam.
Oct. 31, 2007, 3:16 p.m. CST
Hopefully, it is a big worry for nothing, and I will be able to toast your passing in Austin, in a month. Sound good?

Oct. 31, 2007, 3:56 p.m. CST
Here's to the DA job, J-Law! I'll drink one for you as well. Hopefully, we can grab one together at the Alamo Draft House this December!
Oct. 31, 2007, 6:39 p.m. CST
J-Law, I remember waiting for the bar results (seems like a long time ago now, heh. Actually it's only been 4 years). Longest wait EVAR, BNAT pales. Hang in there and good luck.
Oct. 31, 2007, 11:02 p.m. CST
Certainly hope you are going to be updating us when you know about the bar!! Ahh...the wait. It hurts. The burning.
Nov. 1, 2007, 6:01 a.m. CST
Good luck keep us posted
Nov. 1, 2007, 6:45 a.m. CST

Nov. 1, 2007, 7:33 a.m. CST
Up late last night refreshing every two minutes. Up early this morning refreshing every minute. Please Harry, the torture is becoming unbearable. Or maybe that is his intention. The type of growing tension someone might find in say...........A John Carpenter Film.

So far - 3:45 - no bar results - no BNAT results....I'm....losing....my....MIND!!!!!!!!!!!
Nov. 1, 2007, 3:51 p.m. CST
I read on the Live Journal site that the delay on the BNAT list is because the number of seats in the theater is still in flux. It could be a 2-3 day delay according to HK. I only keep checking today to make sure J-Law passes the bar exam.
Nov. 1, 2007, 4:03 p.m. CST
Nov. 1, 2007, 4:17 p.m. CST
Yeah, the LJ site mentions the MySpace blog posting where Harry says the posting might be delayed 2-3 days, but that was on Oct. 30, so today would be 2 days later... anyways, I'm not so sure the # of seats could fluctuate that much, since Tim has pics up on flikr of theater 1 with seats/tables all bolted in. My guess is it's not the seat count, but the unannounced guest count. If certain people can/cannot attend, it would affect how many of us luckysonofabitches are accepted... someone's agent needs to call Harry back with the final answer and end all this suffering! It's leading me to the Dark Side!

Nov. 1, 2007, 4:44 p.m. CST
That's awesome! Now you don't have to sweat going through the whole thing again in 6 months! If any/all of us make it in this year, we should kick things off with a celebratory drink (or ten)!
Nov. 1, 2007, 4:56 p.m. CST
...can you take care of a little incident that happened last time I was in Austin. As a preface, I'm totally innocent. Just kiddin'. Congrats J-Law!

We have a link to it in the LJ Bnatters community in one of the posts and they scroll back pretty far on the main page http://community.livejournal.com/bnatters/ I will go ahead and add it as one of the main links so folks can easily get back to it from there.
