Frank Darabont has something to say about the rating for THE MIST!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Out of the blue this morning I was contacted by Frank Darabont. He read the test screening reviews (one here and one here) that have hit and he wanted to clear something up that was mentioned, regarding the film's rating:
As you know, these test screenings are organized by independent companies who do that sort of thing...so this ain't Dimension's fault...but apparently (if I'm understanding the first reviewer correctly) they posted something outside the theater saying "Movie not yet rated, but likely PG-13." Or words to that effect.
That was clueless. I don't where they got that idea (maybe it's their standard shot-in-the-dark practice at test screenings), but PG-13 was NEVER a possibility for this film. Dimension went into this knowing I was going to make an R movie, and that's exactly what it is. We got our rating from the MPAA just a few days ago, and I can assure everybody it's a big fat R. And there's no way I'm trimming a frame of this movie to make it less of an R for the release.
So there you have it, straight from the horse's mouth as it were. Good news to be sure, at least for us die hard King nuts that want to see this story faithfully realized. If you've read it, you know there's no way in hell there is a faithful PG-13 version of THE MIST. Can't wait to see those spiders ruining everybody's day!

Woo hoo
-
And they make 90-minute PG-13 horse-shit.
-
Thanks for the update! I always had faith in you! I can't wait to see one of my favorite stories from a child to an adult be brought to life. It's the best birthday gift I'll ever get!
-
You know you want it as much as I do!
-
Just kidding.
-
Cause from what people are saying, THAT's the problem. It can be just as atmospheric and scary rated PG-13, but there's no excuse for any crappy effects in this day and age. God DAMN it, I'm fearing yet another AICN-overhype fueled let down for something I've been pumped up for years to see. Please be good, please be good, please be good. . .

RAMBO : Fists in the Mist
-
Very anxiously. Glad that it will be "R" rated. That means that they have not sacrificed a thing!!
-
I still envy you for getting that set visit, man. And the trailer fully sold me on Andre being Norton, that whole "I guess the joke will be on me" was such great delivery.
-
Loved "Shawshank Redemption" (fuck fucking "Forrest Gump" for Best Picture 1994), and I can't wait to see this one. And thank him for the reassurance of a "big fat R". Nice to see that some directors (ahem*WISEMAN*ahem) aren't pussying out and cutting their films to a PG-13 for greater mainstream success.
-
I love this story. It is one of those King stories that makes you FEEL what is going on. I love Langoliers for that same reason.
-
I remeber listening to that thing so many times with these huge headphones on sitting in my room with all the lights off. It was such a blast. I'm so happy to know that a story that I've cherished for so long will come to the big screen. I just can't wait to see the scenes that have played in my head so many times brought to this medium. It will be so wonderful to add to my collection of King stuff.

A filmmaker with conviction. Not many left.

Well, people did go see Attack of the Clones and the Spider-Man didn't they.
-
Reading the set reports on this site made me go out and buy the book and read The Mist. I can't wait to see this movie. Hope it rocks!
-
That's the fuckin' truth man!
-
Oh yea, thats more like it. I enjoyed 1408 for what it was, but I felt like it was holding back to hit that PG-13 audience. Stephen King has always written for an adult audience, and his adaptations should reflect that.
-
...I hope no idiot suits step in and screw Darabont, and us, over.
-
A complete mess...........a straight to DVD travesty.
-
You made a movie that you thought was scary but it was'nt............It look unscary........The trailers look unscary......the supposed unfinised effects look unscary.
The acting is very scarey though.......... -
From one o' the "Thing" gang from Bob Burns' Halloween show. Cheers!

Normally I wouldn't say that but the Mist wasn't really a gore filled splatter fest. There are what? three parts of the story that contain any graphic violence, most of it coming at the end. At its heart the Mist is about fear of the unknown. At first the characters trying to figure out what the hell is going on and then trying to work up the courage to actually venture out into the Mist.
If people are going to this movie expecting The Thing or Silent Hill level of gore they might be disappointed. -
I was at the screening too, and while I admired Darabont's ditrecting, there was lots of problems with the story and editing. There were several times during the film when small groups were confronted with these horrors around them, and they just stood around screaming and looking on in shock. The whole time I kept screaming in my head, what the fuck are they doing, just get out already, at the very least hit something. I blame it on the editing, but to say the least, a lot of the character responses to the crisis situations made me think they deserved to die, and die heiniously. Plus, there's no subtlety or character dimension to the two most hated characters in the movie. The lawyer and the crazy Christian lady. Not once do you have any sympathy for them, but every time they're on the screen you want them to die right now and in the most heinous way possible. I know most of the AICN talkbackers will feel vindicated in the way the Christian lady is portrayed, but the majority of the Christians out there will feel like it's a big Fuck You to them. The portrayal is so over the top and in your face, it feels that Mr.Darabont has a serious axe to grind and is lashing out. Hell, I'm a Christian and the people I went with were also Christians, and even we wanted her to shut the Fuck up and die already.
Plus that ending. Yes it could be considered brilliant, but mostly in the "I can't believe they went there!!!" response. I know for a fact most of fandom will applaud Mr. Darabont, but the majority of people will be very disturbed by it. I admired the ending, though it didn't seemed to be earned. This movie will be going up against Enchanted and Hitman, plus the fact that we're going to be entering the Holiday season, and there's no way people are going to want to watch a movie like this. There's really not that much of scares, but there's plenty of hateful people doing plenty of hateful things to each other. And that ending... Let's just say people are not going to come away feeling that holiday spirit. I remember when all of the reviews were coming out for "The Fountain" and all of these sites were heaping praises on it and fanboys were saying it's a brilliant movie, but I knew it was going to bomb. that's pretty much the way I feel about this movie. -
Thanks for letting us know.
-
They saw your movie and said it was a PG-13.........it's not their fault. Its yours.
-
Since they supposedly had a small budget.
-
It's great to see filmmakers & studios stand by their guns and not try to cater to teenagers & pre-teens.
-
...a.k.a. Same Guy Who watches Halloween and screams at Laurie Strode, "Why are you just standing there...RUN!!!" It's called suspense and it is supposed to produce a certain reaction inside you, which is known as anxiety or fear. Without that there is no movie. Movies are about suspending disbelief. Are you pissed that Superman can fly, even though it's impossible?
-
Starring VOLTRON!!!
-
No matter what happens with this movie, Frank... thanks (and congratulations) for finally getting it done. I think we should all be more accepting and embracing of failure, or the possibility of it. That's a far better thing than hiding from it. Especially in a case like yours where the talent level is so high and the desire to produce quality so honest. Here's hoping you've made the first great adaptation of a more explicit horror/creature King story that can sit next to Green Mile and Shawshank. Now get cooking on The Long Walk... another of King's best stories.
-
Dude, have you seen the movie? Then shut the fuck up. I know what suspense is. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but the scene involved these spiders, and instead of making a quick exit when the horror starts happening, they continue to shine their flashlights and watch. to make things worse, the others in the back continue searching around the pharmacy like there's no immediate danger. There were two other scenes in the movie where characters make boneheaded decisions, mostly for the sake of putting themselves in danger just to scare the audience. Like I said a lot of the scenes weren't earned.
-
The ending would have haunted your soul, if the rest of the film had been better. As it is, at least for me, it didn't really earn it. When it happens, you're either like, what the fuck, why'd they go there or Brilliant! I am surprised that people haven't figured it out yet. Or maybe they have, and they don't want to spoil it for everyone else. Also, the characters allied with Thomas Jane are very much likeable, which makes what happens to them even more... well I don't want to spoil it.
-
thanks for the spoiler!!I'm joking, but actually I really didn't know there were spiders involved in this, since I've never read the story...
-
I have figured out what happens in the end just by putting 2 and 2 together. It's right there in everyones face to see. But I will not be the one blurting it out. No way, not me.
-
In some ways, I think Stephen King's short stories and novellas make for some of the best modern-day short fiction on the shelves, and I'm glad to see that respect is being taken with one of his finest novellas.
-
Yay for more fan interaction! Thank you Quint and thank you Frank for the big fat "R".

Waiting almost 20 years to see the stalked legs of a giant mutant monster walk over the car. And pink bugs.

SkeletonParty is right, like most King stories it is the

characters that flesh out the story. As someone also mentioned, the story was not a gore fest. It was more of a fear and frustation fest. The story was great. Everyone keeps saying book, but this was just a novella from one of his compilations. I forget which one. I want to see it, and I hope there's the ususal King cameo, but I'm not expecting, nor wantinga splatterfest.
-
Right on, Frank! I'm there opening night.
-
Frank has Made 2 of my all-time favorites so far. And I can't wait to see this BIG FAT R
-
If only Die Hard 4.0 could have been an 'R' -- and no Kevin Smith -- would have been great.
