Another review for THE MIST comes rolling in!!!

Published at:  Oct 12, 2007 2:51:14 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with another review from last Tuesday's test screening of Frank Darabont's adaptation of Stephen King's THE MIST. This one is glowing, too, the only negatives at all mention the unfinished digital effects. It is an early screening afterall, so I'll save my worrying for when the film is finalized. They have some of the great CafeFX (Pan's Labyrinth) doing the digital work, so my confidence is high that those guys will bring their A game.

Enjoy the review, which is very light on spoilers... so light I don't think I'll even put the spoiler box on this one. There is a little discussion as to the reaction to the end of the film, but no specifics. Read on!

Well Hello there Harry, Moriarty and Quint,

I saw a pre-screening of "The Mist"!

I just got finished reading Randy's review of "The Mist". I was actually at the same screening he was.

This is not going to be a review that talks of story or plot points since that has already been done this is just my feelings on a great freakin story.

This a film I have been following since the beginning, and one of my most anticipated films for the year. The Mist is a story I grew up with, a story that my parents would read me before I went to bed at night. Then I remember taking road trips with the fam and while on the road we would listen to the audio version that was made of "The Mist" in 3D SOUND! The one that started off with machine gun fire to get the listener pumped. So when I got a chance to go to the movie I leaped at the opportunity.

This movie was fantastic, scary, and heart pounding! I loved every moment it. It was a roller coaster ride of emotional anxiety. This movie was dark, disturbing, and real. By far the best horror movie to come out in a long ass time. Sure the digital effects weren't completed but who cares I always saw the monsters as a secondary antagonist anyway. The real freakin monsters were Mrs. Carmody and her cult of religious freaks.

The casting was perfect in the film. And I agree with Randy that Marcia Gay Hardens performance deserves a Academy award nom. She was born to play this role.

Now for the ending. I will not give a way anything just a little commentary. I thought it was appropriate for what this movie was building up to, and I loved it. There are a lot of people out there that like to complain about the typical Hollywood endings, well this is not it. The end of this movie punches you in the gut hard and you feel it. It is dark and uncomfortable. A friend of mine who was with me hated the ending. He even told me that as much as he hated the typical Hollywood ending, he wished this would have been one. I don't think a lot of people are going to like it including those that would complain if it ended in typical Hollywood fashion.

As a long time fan of this story the movie takes it to a whole new level and intensity. Definitely a huge step up from the revolutionary 3D sound.

If you already couldn't tell I really, Really, REALLY! enjoyed this movie.

Thanks guys,

I'm Jacked_up

The trailer looks like over-lit garbage and it killed whatever excitement I WAS feeling for this movie. I've been waiting 20 plus years for it too. Hope I'm wrong... but I won't be.

I was at the same screening as Randy and Jacked-up

    by bismarckf

And I'm thinking I saw a different movie. Yes, all the performances were great, yes, the ending was rather dark... but the movie was also incredibly episodic. And lacking in any sense of building jeopardy or tension. And characters act like Standard Horror Movie Characters (there are tentacles coming through the door and no one thinks to close the door?!?) Sure, some of this can be fixed with some editing -- Dear God, please put some transitions between some of the scenes -- but I'm not sure how they're going to be able to fix some of the third-act blahs.

If he wishes for a typical Hollywood ending, then he LOVES them.

    by stalin vs predator

Plus he's a twat. The foolish sugary ending is one of the things that spoil and almost destroy Darabont's "Shawshank" adaptation.

Sacrafice the Plant! Apparently thats me.

    by jacked_up

Wow! All of you accusing reveiws of being plants remined me of Mrs. Carmody getting everyone rialed up to make a human sacrafice. Sorry for sending out the plant vibes. Writing reviews isn't my thing. I just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents. No plant here, just a regular movie geek who loved this film. Just wait till you see it then you will know for your self.

You know what's sadder than plants?

    by wed vid guy

People who accuse anyone who presents a positive review as a plant. Get a life already. So is Moriarty a plant as well? He seemed to love the shit out of it. I'm confidant that this movie won't suck. How good it ends up being is a question mark but Daranbont hasn't dropped the ball yet when it comes to the world of King yet. Have faith peeps.
