Who Will Herd The THUNDERCATS??

Published at:  Oct 10, 2007 10:19:30 AM CDT

Merrick here...

Jerry O'Flaherty. He's a video game dude. He was the art director on GEARS OF WAR and UNREAL TOURNAMENT 3, among his many credits.

The origin story expands on the major heroes and villains from the animated series, with the plot focusing on Lion-O coming of age as the leader of the Thundercats.

...says THIS ARTICLE.

To my knowledge, there's been no word on the nature of the CGI that'll be used here. Perhaps the same mocap technology deployed on POLAR EXPRESS and BEOWULF? Something entirely different?

For a while, indications were this was a live action project. CGI makes a lot more sense...and will almost certainly look far less dopey.

    George Lowe as Lion-O, Morgan Freeman as Panthro

    by samus aran

    I have for years thought that if they make a Thundercats live action movie, that George Lowe who voiced Space Ghost on Coast to Coast should be Lion-O. If you have seen him before, you may agree that he would look the part fine, but his voice could not possibly be more perfect, not possibly in my oppinion. Also I have also always felt that Morgan Freeman would make a good Panthro, but for live action he may now be too old, but who knows. Panthro always seemed like an old guy to me on the cartoon anyway, even though the established fact was that Tygra was the oldest Thundercat. Anyway George Lowe and Morgan Freeman would for sure be absolutely perfect if they go the Zemeckis performance capture way, which would be ok I guess- but I would prefer live action right now. Anyway, does anyone agree with me on these two actors?

    I don't care how much you loved Thundercats as a kid, but this just simply can not be done in ANY other format besides straight up old school animation without it looking completely ridiculous. Let's be completely honest, full grown human-cat hybrids are already silly enough, but done with live action or even motion captured and it's gonna look asinine.

    Actually, part of the first season, was more or less a "coming of age" story until the 5 part anointment series, where he went through the trials against the other Thundercats, and afterwards, he truly became "Lord of the Thundercats": Part I (Trial of Strength), Part II (Trial of Speed), Part III (Trial of Cunning), Part IV (Trial of Mind Power) and Part V (Trial of Evil).

    My previous dickish comment aside

    by larry sellers

    Isaac Hayes as Panthro. I'm all for a mo-cap cartoon (it's a cartoon whether or not live actors provide the movements...rotoscoping anyone? it's all animation, folks) as long as it doesn't involve the Cats falling through some kind of time portal and ending up in present day New York where Mumm-Ra has established himself as a corrupt businessman. I was never an enormous fan of that toon growing up, but it was a nice appetizer before Masters of the Universe. Transformers was one thing. The film was like just about every episode of the show, except it had Anthony Anderson being black and Jon Voight with a 12 gauge. But mostly it worked just fine for me, but it doesn't work that way with Thundercats. Simply put, it should be a straight up fantasy film, with no mention of modern day Earth, and none of this "My bad" bullshit. Mo-cap it up man.

    Just keeps getting more homoerotic...

    by rhesusmonkeydave

    Think of the old He-Man cartoons, and now think of the movie. Skeletor laserwhipping a well oiled Dolph Lundgren...
    Now think of how gay Thundercats were to begin with? Seriously that cartoon made the Broadway show Cats look butch.

    Peculiar Purple Pie Man of Porcupine Peak THE MOVIE

    by drath

    Starring Jackie Earle Haley as the Pie Man, and Parker Posey as Sour Grapes. We learn the sad history of the pie man, why he hates strawberries, and what's really in those pies that he was little children to eat...

    I liked it as a kid but I hate it now.

    All I can say is...

    by psychoclown

    They better not fuck this up. I am a child of the eighties and I can remember playing "thundercats" with my friends. I had a lot of the toys ( still want the thundertank), and own the series on dvd... this was a huge part of my childhood and if they mess it up I will lose all faith in movies and film in general... all i gotta say... oh and here's my dream list

    Lion-o = Sean Bean
    Panthro = either Sam Jackson or Larry Fishburn
    jaga = Alec Guiness ( i know hes dead but still...)
    Cheetara = Scarlett Johannsen
    tygra = dunno....
    Wily kit/kat = Olsen twins... ( one in drag of course)
    Mummra = Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock
    Monkian = Willam Defoe
    Sssslithe = fuck... can't recall his name.... the big gay dude from Lake Placid
    Vultureman = James Woods ( I know its a stretch but he could pull it off)

    and i'm drunk so thats it... no mas... good night
