Universal Shows Us What Happens When No One Gets JURASSIC PARK 4 Up & Running: LAND OF THE LOST!! With Will Ferrell!!

Published at:  Oct 10, 2007 1:38:46 PM CDT

Merrick again...

Brad Silberling (LEMONY SNICKET'S A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS) will direct a $100,000,000 (you read the right) adaptation of the Kroft's NBC Saturday morning series LAND OF THE LOST for Universal.

You know I couldn't resist YouTubing this one. Sorry...it was calling me, and I couldn't say "no".

As a kid, I was always terribly confounded by the show's second season re-conception . Check out the Season 2 title sequence for comparison:

WTF is that about? Anyway, back to the movie:

Adaptation by Chris Henchy and Dennis McNicholas revolves around a disgraced paleontologist, his assistant and a macho tour guide who find themselves in a strange world inhabited by dinosaurs, monkey people and reptilian Sleestaks.

...says THIS ARTICLE in Variety.

So, you read the article clipping: they promised us Sleestacks. We'd better get Sleestacks. I once had a teacher who looked like a Sleestack. She was a real bitch.

I wonder if Haley Joel Osment is too old to play Chaka?

Here's a full episode. It has Skylons in it. Wait...huh?

Hollywood, you pissed on my Star Wars. You pissed on my Planet of the Apes. You're in the process of pissing on my original Star Trek. You've remade (or are planning to remak) every remotely worthwhile horror franchise in existence. The very least you could do is keep your filthy fucking mitts off the one aspect of my childhood that has to this day remained relatively pure (minus that shitty puppeteering mishap in the late '90s). Get behind me thou foul money-grubbing beasts!! Sid & Marty Krofft properties are not your new, shiny plaything. Will Ferrell needs to be kept a billion miles away from any modern day re-imagining of my beloved campy/druggy 70's Saturday morning live-action fare. What next? Jack Black as "Jimmy" and Helena Bonham Carter as "Witchiepoo" in a re-do-just-to-do of "H.R. Pufnstuf?" Or howzabout Jon Heder in a full-on modernizing of "Sigmund the Sea Monster?" Universal - you RAT BASTARDS!! - you ought to be ashamed.

    by derlanghaarige

I know the show from my childhood, but the German version of the opening titles has a more dramatic tune and a narrator, as far as I remember.
I also know that in one episode of The A-Team Hannibal wore a Sleestack costume, but they didn't call it a sleestack.

    by zacdilone

The guy who played the dad left the show, so they wrote him out by having him use one of the pylons, which caused him to get sucked away into who knows where. Then the uncle showed up, and they figured out that the way the Land of the Lost worked, there always had to be a balancing effect to people coming and going. Since the dad left...the uncle showed up. Why do I remember that?

    by allpowerfulwizardofoz

Already with that terrible casting of Farrell it sounds like they are going comedy. That fucking sucks. The show was actually pretty decent for a Saturday morning kids show with a limited budget and there is so much they actually do with a Sleestak story arc. But considering who's going to be in this it will be nothing more then a goddamn parody which is a shame because there was so much potential for something greater and dark. Chalk this one up to a movie I won't see.

Making "Land of the Lost" with a Big Budget...

    by bobbyjoe

...is like making a Hostess Twinkie out of gourmet pastry and cream. It loses the thing that actually makes it a Hostess Twinkie, so what's the point? If there's one movie that would actually be improved by the lowest budget possible, it's "Land of the Lost." Half the charm of the original series was its lame-o special effects.

    Land of the Lost

    by the alienist

What a lot of us of a certain age remember is that, despite its cheesey FX, "Land of the Lost" had some really good science fiction. Even at the time it was regarded as such, it actually had some original Star Trek writers on board. Sometimes it got almost trippy in it use of what is now traditional scifi elements. I remember a particular ep involving the Flying Mariner that somehow placed Holly into two different time periods. Very odd and sorta wonderful and way ahead of its time.

Really? Wow. Someone's got a little bit of cash to throw away. I'm with Bobbyjoe, a MUCH lower budget would make it a better movie. Like, say a budget of seventeen dollars.

Also, I really hope you guys aren't serious about this remake "raping your childhood". Jesus Christ, even when I was a kid I thought Land of the Lost was cheesy as hell.

    by larrythecableguy

and doesn't just start screaming obnoxiously for 10 minutes after bumping his knee on a root, then backing into every tree and knocking things down. it would work like that in a snl sketch, he'd probly have a mis-understanding chaka and slap him around and then 10 minutes of him screaming while being stuck in the t-rex's mouth. but the movie should drop the cheesy and be a serious interdimensional sci-fi adventure with dinosaurs, sleestacks, power crystals, throw in a hot jungle woman or two, and all that.

I recently watched seasons 1 & 2 on DVD sharing one of my favorite shows as a kid with my own kids and as I recall Spencer Mulligan didn't want to do a third season, something about wanting more money I believe, so they wrote him out with his character going home and mind bogglingly wrote in Will & Holly's uncle.

    by trader groucho 2

The reason something like this gets greenlit with a $100m budget (small compared to Evan's) is that fanboys like some of you who have posted here already remember the show. They're exploiting the mindspace this idea already occupies. My solution is to ignore this for as long as possible, until one of you sneaks into a sneak (I'll be happy to sign your NDA. No, I won't spill on the Net. What's the Net? May I see the movie now please?), and if it turns out to be unusually good, I'll consider seeing it.

DOESN'T MAKE IT CLASSIC, OR GOOD, OR GROUND BREAKING. And of course Hollywood is going the exact OPPOSITE direction of what would be funniest -- Ferrell in a $20 million dollar spoof of a bad kids' saturday morning tv show...now THAT'S funny.

but i was probably 4 or 5 when the Kroft Superstar hour was on TV or whatever they called it- and I swear Land of the Lost scared the crap out of me- actually it was just the Sleestaks that scared me: I didn't like anything you couldn't reason with- (a propos of nothing) but all that said, I still have fond memories of its sci-fi attitude. whoever made that comment up there, thanks. in a way it WAS ahead of its time, wasn't it? Wasn't there some kind of english speaking Sleestak who had been more evolved than his green buddies? And what about that room full of talkin sleestak heads? that was creepy.

anyway... i have no opinion about will ferrell and 100MM dollars. elektra woman on the other hand...

Bay City Rollers Saturday Morning Show reimagined...

    by eriamjh

... with I dunno. I think we're now spent on the Sid & Marty shows. Anyway, I guess I'm not the only guy who grew up thinking "Why did Greg and Cindy Brady clone themselves to fight dinosaurs, monkey boys, and lizard people?" But I still want a Sleezstack costume... loved to sneak up behind my friends and scare them with the "SSSSSSSSSSS" hiss!

    by sir loin

Biological disasters were huge for Saturday mornings back in the 70's, that would make an awesome film, despite the vehicular similarities to DAMNATION ALLEY. And DANGER ISLAND interludes, of course.

I hope you are kidding about Will Farrell...

    by chrisd

he f-ed up Bewitched. He is second only to the other Will, Will Smith, in ruining movies. Tom Jane would be good as Rick Marshall, Emil Hirsch as Will, Miley Cyrus as Holly, Cameron Bright as Chaka, Doug Jones as Enik, Miguel Ferrer as the voice of Enik.

Land of the Lost sucked SO bad

    by boromir

Some kids were lucky--they just got molested by priests. And then there were those of us exposed to Land of the Lost. As a kid, I hated this show with all my might, right along with Hee-Haw (and the Orlando Wilson Fishin' Show. Reinventing the concept as a self-reflexive smirkfest might make it tolerable. I still may not see it, though, even though Will Ferrell's presence is promising; if I get the slightest auditory whiff of that Satanic inbred banjo music theme song, I will projectile vomit on the spot. And that would likely ruin a perfectly good theater screen.

If they make then they should end it like this:

    by mrfan

Have them discover a way home. Trouble is only one can go back. Have Will Farrell push his kids aside and get home himself. Then have the uncle from the second season show up. He can be played by Steve Carrel or Luke Wilson or Ben Stiller. Leaves room for a sequel. BOX OFFICE GOLD!!!

    Is there a way

    by spanksteroflove

to incorporate some sort of organized sport (t-ball, cricket, midget/mud/arm/women's wrestling) around this Land o' the Lost movie? That way Will Ferrell will feel right at home, and won't have to stretch his comedic talents too thin.

I never missed Land Of The Lost

    by garofellatio

But it had the same problem as Superfriends. Week in, week out, ALMOST good. I was about 11 when it premiered and the effects were so fake, especially the bluescreen/greenscreen. But it had Wah Chang stop-motion dinos and those awesome Sleestak!!! Could not stand Spencer Milligan or Wesley Eure, and Chaka was worse. The show got better as it went along-- seems like most of the first season the kids would scream DADDDY DAAADDYY DDAAAADDDYYYY for most of the episode. Like I said, ALMOST good. I think the Ferrell remake is a cute idea, but you just know they're gonna do that Jack Black/Helena "Bonzo" Bonham Carter Puffnstuff thing, now that somebody put that idea in their heads!!!!

    A Jurassic Mistake

    by moviemo

What a grave disappointment the Jurassic Park sequels were! Especially if you consider the source material... Michael Crichton's novel is science fiction genius. To taint it with sub-par follow-ups just shows how unfortunately money hungry the powers that be really are... as far as Land of the Lost... er....uhm...okay... Will Ferrell went to my high school, but that's about as cool as he gets, and my high school was lame.

    by violator90

Seriously, $100,000,000 to make a movie that is based on a show that looks like it costs no more that $50! What the fuck is Hollywood shoting/smoking/ramming up its ass?!?! How the fuck a can a movie like this be EVEN considered for a budget of $100,000,000?!?! LOTR, ok, Harry Potter series, ok, Bond series definitely, but LAND OF THE LOST??? Are you shitting me? Every one know just from this outlandish budget that this movie is going to be a crap fest that only Hollywood can produce.

Didn't anyone learn anything from GRINDHOUSE?

    by thegreatwhatzit

GRINDHOUSE was homage to cheap-o exploitation movies (variable budgets, from $25,000 to $100,000). Total cost: $70 million. Boxoffice: 0. LAND OF THE LOST was an inexpensive kiddie show. Speculative cost of movie adaptation: $100 million. I'm experiencing some deja-vu. As for Will Ferrell; he performs the same schtick all of the time, I wish I could appreciate his comedy but enough already.
