Universal Shows Us What Happens When No One Gets JURASSIC PARK 4 Up & Running: LAND OF THE LOST!! With Will Ferrell!!
Merrick again...
Brad Silberling (LEMONY SNICKET'S A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS) will direct a $100,000,000 (you read the right) adaptation of the Kroft's NBC Saturday morning series LAND OF THE LOST for Universal.
You know I couldn't resist YouTubing this one. Sorry...it was calling me, and I couldn't say "no".
As a kid, I was always terribly confounded by the show's second season re-conception . Check out the Season 2 title sequence for comparison:
WTF is that about? Anyway, back to the movie:
Adaptation by Chris Henchy and Dennis McNicholas revolves around a disgraced paleontologist, his assistant and a macho tour guide who find themselves in a strange world inhabited by dinosaurs, monkey people and reptilian Sleestaks.
...says THIS ARTICLE in Variety.
So, you read the article clipping: they promised us Sleestacks. We'd better get Sleestacks. I once had a teacher who looked like a Sleestack. She was a real bitch.
I wonder if Haley Joel Osment is too old to play Chaka?
Here's a full episode. It has Skylons in it. Wait...huh?

Who's giving him career advice? With movies like Blades of Glory he's losing cred quickly.

Dinosaurs, Banjos, shitty effects....if it aint broke dont fix i
by lordrando
Seriously. Banjos. dinosaurs. I bet the movie will only have one of the two, and you cant make CGI banjos eat people.
-
...but hasn't this been announced 1 or 2 years ago? Even with Will Ferrell? I guess only Brad Silberling is new.
-
The more I think about it, isn't "Lost" almost the same idea as "Land of the Lost"? It all seems to similar. LAWSUIT!
-
Hollywood, you pissed on my Star Wars. You pissed on my Planet of the Apes. You're in the process of pissing on my original Star Trek. You've remade (or are planning to remak) every remotely worthwhile horror franchise in existence. The very least you could do is keep your filthy fucking mitts off the one aspect of my childhood that has to this day remained relatively pure (minus that shitty puppeteering mishap in the late '90s). Get behind me thou foul money-grubbing beasts!! Sid & Marty Krofft properties are not your new, shiny plaything. Will Ferrell needs to be kept a billion miles away from any modern day re-imagining of my beloved campy/druggy 70's Saturday morning live-action fare. What next? Jack Black as "Jimmy" and Helena Bonham Carter as "Witchiepoo" in a re-do-just-to-do of "H.R. Pufnstuf?" Or howzabout Jon Heder in a full-on modernizing of "Sigmund the Sea Monster?" Universal - you RAT BASTARDS!! - you ought to be ashamed.

Wow, the German titles of it are waaaaaaaay different!
by derlanghaarige
I know the show from my childhood, but the German version of the opening titles has a more dramatic tune and a narrator, as far as I remember.
I also know that in one episode of The A-Team Hannibal wore a Sleestack costume, but they didn't call it a sleestack. -

I'm still waiting for the first 1 billion dollar budget movie.
by stalin vs predator
It will probably be Jackson's remake of "Lost World". With the effects being done by the people who did the dinosaur stampede in his Donkey Kong 2005.
-
You think Ferrell is LOSING cred with flicks like Blades of Glory? Then where in the world did he GAIN his cred? The Ladies Man? Night at the Roxbury? This is the stuff he excels at!
-
How about THAT?! At least the TUROK comic book property will be seen in a NEW video game.
-
I don't see where that's any less funny than any of the other Farrell movies.
-
That, and the proposed preschool version of "The Bugaloos" are two things I've been patiently waiting for. I just hope they get brits for "The Bugaloos" since you really can't have it any other way. (Sorry, DeVito, but I don't think late '90s pop stars would've cut it.)
-
Was it Marshall, Will and Holly or Will and Holly Marshall?
-
You gotta get John Milius, he'd be perfect.
-
anyone remember a story on aicn years ago about how JP4 was going to feature a race of dino-human supersoldiers that were bred from the DNA wayne knight tried to steal in JP1, in a spooky transylvanian castle? and that spielberg had said that if he'd been approched with that idea for JP3 he never would have made the JP3 that hit theatres? because i do. and i'm still laughing about it.
-
Nude...in the shower...soaping up...cue theme music...there's your movie.
-
The name implies a closet Van Helsing Fan. I was sure that would be just me.
-
That looked like it was filmed in someones bathtub! Those FX are great, specially the painted prehistoric chickens!?Ferrells best work has been in Curious George coz you didn't get distracted by his piggy eyes and pube hair but I think this might be his finest hour!
-
The guy who played the dad left the show, so they wrote him out by having him use one of the pylons, which caused him to get sucked away into who knows where. Then the uncle showed up, and they figured out that the way the Land of the Lost worked, there always had to be a balancing effect to people coming and going. Since the dad left...the uncle showed up. Why do I remember that?
-
That makes me laugh.

I JUST GOT OFF THE PHONE WITH A HUNDRED MILLION DOLLAR BUDGET

True story: The Mo-Cap process for Chaka and the Sleestaks is gonna cost a lot for this movie, and it has to be done just right, or else it would look fake.

My favorite shows as a child. They will fuck this up.
by allpowerfulwizardofoz
Already with that terrible casting of Farrell it sounds like they are going comedy. That fucking sucks. The show was actually pretty decent for a Saturday morning kids show with a limited budget and there is so much they actually do with a Sleestak story arc. But considering who's going to be in this it will be nothing more then a goddamn parody which is a shame because there was so much potential for something greater and dark. Chalk this one up to a movie I won't see.
-
Land of the Lost ruled. Except for that stupid season with Uncle Jack.
-
Its perfect casting!
-
this is sickening
-
Let's see Wonderbug. This time he's a pimped out Hummer
-
...is like making a Hostess Twinkie out of gourmet pastry and cream. It loses the thing that actually makes it a Hostess Twinkie, so what's the point? If there's one movie that would actually be improved by the lowest budget possible, it's "Land of the Lost." Half the charm of the original series was its lame-o special effects.
-
nuff said. You know we all love you Clint. Did you see him in Far and Away. Fuuuuuuugly.

I remember the episode when the hot grown up Holly came back from the future to the LOTL to save everyone. She gave me strange thoughts I didn't understand. What was the Last LOTL episode about?

some of the other ones are godawful. The dad was a terrible actor and always seemed to look like he was in hell having to do that role. I guess that's why he bailed (or they fired him) later on.

Fuck this...Where's my DR. SHRINKER movie starring Bill Nighy?
by spyguy
"Doctor Shrinker! Doctor Shrinker! He's a madman with an evil mind..." Tell me this wouldn't be all kinds of awesome.
-
What a lot of us of a certain age remember is that, despite its cheesey FX, "Land of the Lost" had some really good science fiction. Even at the time it was regarded as such, it actually had some original Star Trek writers on board. Sometimes it got almost trippy in it use of what is now traditional scifi elements. I remember a particular ep involving the Flying Mariner that somehow placed Holly into two different time periods. Very odd and sorta wonderful and way ahead of its time.

Fuck that...Where's my FAR OUT SPACE NUTS movie starring Luiz Gu
by lance rocke
I'd buy that for a dollar!
-
Really? Wow. Someone's got a little bit of cash to throw away. I'm with Bobbyjoe, a MUCH lower budget would make it a better movie. Like, say a budget of seventeen dollars.
Also, I really hope you guys aren't serious about this remake "raping your childhood". Jesus Christ, even when I was a kid I thought Land of the Lost was cheesy as hell. -
. . . I remember being so stoked when Grumpy followed the main characters to the ruins the Sleestaks lived under and then faced off with Alice. Then I called them out for having the Allosaurus being the same size as the T-Rex while my parents thought, "What a little tool we've raised."
-
I am guessing this will be Farrell's Evan Almighty. The cost vs funny ratio will be almost impossible to beat, unless they just re-use the effects from the old show.
-
and doesn't just start screaming obnoxiously for 10 minutes after bumping his knee on a root, then backing into every tree and knocking things down. it would work like that in a snl sketch, he'd probly have a mis-understanding chaka and slap him around and then 10 minutes of him screaming while being stuck in the t-rex's mouth. but the movie should drop the cheesy and be a serious interdimensional sci-fi adventure with dinosaurs, sleestacks, power crystals, throw in a hot jungle woman or two, and all that.

And I wonder how long it took before Uncle Jack or Will (the poor man's Greg Brady) tapped Holly? -
when the dad left and the uncle showed up. and you CANNOT do this without a Holly. the basic idea was a Family not co workers!!

Boxoffice PLATINUM will ensue.
-
Please listen to what I'm saying.
-
Hey, Merrick, isn't that clip you have up for season 2 actually season 3? I recently watched seasons 1 & 2 on DVD sharing one of my favorite shows as a kid with my own kids and as I recall Spencer Mulligan didn't want to do a third season, something about wanting more money I believe, so they wrote him out with his character going home and mind bogglingly wrote in Will & Holly's uncle.
-
has amazing fuzz guitar and drugged out lyrics. Some snot nosed emo haired indie rockers should cover it.
-
I think it's sung by the dude who plays Will. WESLEY!
-
...or sky-pylons as they are otherwise known. Yes, it's true... I have NO life!
-
...when Holly had...uh... developed, but was still wearing the funky pigtails? She was really straining the buttons of that flannel shirt, too. When you were like, 8 years old... she was the bomb! Me and my brother used to sing along with the theme song... "Marshal, Will and Holly... On a routine expedition... When the greatest earthquake... Ever knooooown..." (at which point we'd always laughingly interject... "Happened!!!"... and fall out for about five minutes) Ah yes... good times...
-
I'm not a closet fan. I'm a type A-1 Sommersverse whore. :)

He was the first host of "Finders Keepers," that game show that used to come on after "Double Dare" on Nick which had kids turn rooms upside down to look for stuff.

by anna valerious
He's also authored some childrens' books.

The reason something like this gets greenlit with a $100m budget (small compared to Evan's) is that fanboys like some of you who have posted here already remember the show. They're exploiting the mindspace this idea already occupies. My solution is to ignore this for as long as possible, until one of you sneaks into a sneak (I'll be happy to sign your NDA. No, I won't spill on the Net. What's the Net? May I see the movie now please?), and if it turns out to be unusually good, I'll consider seeing it.
I'm really looking forward to Get Smart. That Steve Carrell guy, he just might be the new Steve Carrell. -
Sorry. Couldn't list them all here. AICN's Talkback screen didn't have the capacity.
-
Do you REALLY care one way or the other whether they make a movie of this show? The "My childhood is getting raped" crap is soooo played out, too. Get over yoursleves, you dumb douches. When I was 5 years old The Land of the Lost rocked. But there's no denying the show was awful. Yes, I have a nostalgic place in my heart for the Sleestaks, but c'mon, why are some of you wasting the time and energy bitching about them remaking it? Who gives a flying fuck. Go ahead and remake that shit. It will only be better than it was.
-
Thanks for reminding me of Caveman. Ringo Starr's finest acting (which ain't saying much), and a goofy turn from Dennis Quaid. And Barbara Bach in a fur bikini. Zugga zug zug.

Oh god this is so awful. Why don't we make a movie about the 70's Exo-Man series, or the series where a lost group of people were wondering over this planet and every city was from a different time zone or planet, or the Captain Nemo t.v. series that was on with Logan's Run?
please someone just claw my eyes out now -
Let's do a major motion picture about Space Academy. Then we can do the sequels Jason of Star Command and Ark II. I know, Ark II had nothing to do with Space Academy or Jason, but we could tie it in somehow. (If any execs are reading this I want my cut of the take when you green light these.)
-
This series has been neglected for so long, we need to do a feature film on...wait...wait for it...
Man From Atlantis!
come on..you know you want it. -
To late for a Danger Island remake JJ Abrams has already done it
-
How about an X-O Manowar movie? I'd see it, depending on who scripted it and directed it..
-
I look forward to seeing this, but wish it wasn't Will F that was the lead.... he's to "aware" of the audience... like every movie is a SNL skit... he has that, sort of, "hehehe look how funny I'm being" way of acting. He did seem to curtail that shit in Stranger Than Fiction though.... -

I WAS 4 YEARS OLD AND USED TO LAUGH AT HOW BAD THIS SHOW WAS
by copontheedge
4...YEARS...OLD...AND THE FX LOOKED FAKE AS ALL HELL. THIS SHOW WAS *NEVER* COOL, IT JUST *WAS.* IT WAS ON TV, AND THERE WASN'T MUCH ELSE ON, SO KIDS WATCHED IT. PERIOD. DOESN'T MAKE IT CLASSIC, OR GOOD, OR GROUND BREAKING. And of course Hollywood is going the exact OPPOSITE direction of what would be funniest -- Ferrell in a $20 million dollar spoof of a bad kids' saturday morning tv show...now THAT'S funny.
-
but i was probably 4 or 5 when the Kroft Superstar hour was on TV or whatever they called it- and I swear Land of the Lost scared the crap out of me- actually it was just the Sleestaks that scared me: I didn't like anything you couldn't reason with- (a propos of nothing) but all that said, I still have fond memories of its sci-fi attitude. whoever made that comment up there, thanks. in a way it WAS ahead of its time, wasn't it? Wasn't there some kind of english speaking Sleestak who had been more evolved than his green buddies? And what about that room full of talkin sleestak heads? that was creepy.
anyway... i have no opinion about will ferrell and 100MM dollars. elektra woman on the other hand... -
... with I dunno. I think we're now spent on the Sid & Marty shows. Anyway, I guess I'm not the only guy who grew up thinking "Why did Greg and Cindy Brady clone themselves to fight dinosaurs, monkey boys, and lizard people?" But I still want a Sleezstack costume... loved to sneak up behind my friends and scare them with the "SSSSSSSSSSS" hiss!

Bets on how far in the movie before Ferrell is in his underwear
by rhcp2sweet
I don't care if this movie is targeted at kids, he does it in almost every movie.
-
Biological disasters were huge for Saturday mornings back in the 70's, that would make an awesome film, despite the vehicular similarities to DAMNATION ALLEY. And DANGER ISLAND interludes, of course.
-
he f-ed up Bewitched. He is second only to the other Will, Will Smith, in ruining movies. Tom Jane would be good as Rick Marshall, Emil Hirsch as Will, Miley Cyrus as Holly, Cameron Bright as Chaka, Doug Jones as Enik, Miguel Ferrer as the voice of Enik.
-
Some kids were lucky--they just got molested by priests. And then there were those of us exposed to Land of the Lost. As a kid, I hated this show with all my might, right along with Hee-Haw (and the Orlando Wilson Fishin' Show. Reinventing the concept as a self-reflexive smirkfest might make it tolerable. I still may not see it, though, even though Will Ferrell's presence is promising; if I get the slightest auditory whiff of that Satanic inbred banjo music theme song, I will projectile vomit on the spot. And that would likely ruin a perfectly good theater screen.
-
I just realized that Ron Harper is the same guy who starred as one of the astronauts on the tv series Planet of the Apes. If anyone cares, that is!
-
who the hell was wesley - did he grace the covers of tiger beat - i loved "land of the lost" growing up - ever see the episode where chaka bangs the shit out of holly "quest for fire" style - from behind clutching her golden pig tails like handle bars
-
costing 260 mil - starring a bunch of cgi creations that look like real guys in in real theme park character suits - in a cgi world that looks like a real theme park with a real bumper car ride - awesome - cant fucking wait - the group pratfalls and bumper car action will be the most ambitious cgi fx ever created - so real it will boggle minds - all mo cap and in 3d - zemekis is working on this as i type
-
a veritable goldmine i tell you - "Jason of Star Command" - wouldnt it be funny if that was made into a movie and it turned out better than the star wars prequels - funny in that it wouldnt have exsisted if it werent for star wars - will ferrell as jason
-
...to that incredible feminist superhero duo, Electra Woman and Dynagirl. Wait, they did?Oh, Markie Post, how far has your career fallen?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcJxHwqO29wApparently into a gaping hole the size of the Arizona crater. How much worse can a Land of the Lost remake really be?
-
Would do a killer remake of the theme song.
-
Have them discover a way home. Trouble is only one can go back. Have Will Farrell push his kids aside and get home himself. Then have the uncle from the second season show up. He can be played by Steve Carrel or Luke Wilson or Ben Stiller. Leaves room for a sequel. BOX OFFICE GOLD!!!
-
Coming soon: The greatest sci-fi/fantasy controversy of our time.
-
Now there is a movie I would pay to see. They would have to bring back Charles Nelson Reilly to play Hoodoo though.
-
to incorporate some sort of organized sport (t-ball, cricket, midget/mud/arm/women's wrestling) around this Land o' the Lost movie? That way Will Ferrell will feel right at home, and won't have to stretch his comedic talents too thin.
-
But it had the same problem as Superfriends. Week in, week out, ALMOST good. I was about 11 when it premiered and the effects were so fake, especially the bluescreen/greenscreen. But it had Wah Chang stop-motion dinos and those awesome Sleestak!!! Could not stand Spencer Milligan or Wesley Eure, and Chaka was worse. The show got better as it went along-- seems like most of the first season the kids would scream DADDDY DAAADDYY DDAAAADDDYYYY for most of the episode. Like I said, ALMOST good. I think the Ferrell remake is a cute idea, but you just know they're gonna do that Jack Black/Helena "Bonzo" Bonham Carter Puffnstuff thing, now that somebody put that idea in their heads!!!!
-
The Sleestak used to trip over their own feet REGULARLY. LOTL was so ghey, and so ALMOST good, very frustrating, got the Season 2 & 3 DVDs but have avoided Season One, just not looking forward to DAAAADDDY DDDAAAADDDYYYYYY!!!!!!
-
When I was a kid I was ALL about that show.
-
What a grave disappointment the Jurassic Park sequels were! Especially if you consider the source material... Michael Crichton's novel is science fiction genius. To taint it with sub-par follow-ups just shows how unfortunately money hungry the powers that be really are... as far as Land of the Lost... er....uhm...okay... Will Ferrell went to my high school, but that's about as cool as he gets, and my high school was lame.
-
I want that movie... Unless it's going to be that stupid smart dinos carrying weapons BS that was rumored on the web a couple years ago. If that's gonna be JP4, then let the series DIE.
-
Seriously, $100,000,000 to make a movie that is based on a show that looks like it costs no more that $50! What the fuck is Hollywood shoting/smoking/ramming up its ass?!?! How the fuck a can a movie like this be EVEN considered for a budget of $100,000,000?!?! LOTR, ok, Harry Potter series, ok, Bond series definitely, but LAND OF THE LOST??? Are you shitting me? Every one know just from this outlandish budget that this movie is going to be a crap fest that only Hollywood can produce.
-
GRINDHOUSE was homage to cheap-o exploitation movies (variable budgets, from $25,000 to $100,000). Total cost: $70 million. Boxoffice: 0. LAND OF THE LOST was an inexpensive kiddie show. Speculative cost of movie adaptation: $100 million. I'm experiencing some deja-vu. As for Will Ferrell; he performs the same schtick all of the time, I wish I could appreciate his comedy but enough already.
