Regarding The New Terry Gilliam Film...

Published at:  Oct 10, 2007 6:31:44 AM CDT

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.

I am very slow in posting about this because... because I don’t have an excuse. I was intimidated by some brand new behind-the-scenes stuff that you guys probably noticed as a slow down or weird functionality by the site for the last few days. Even so, I just dragged my feet on posting a link to something that’s been up for at least two days now.

But I’m posting it now because it’s bloody well worth posting. I am so excited about new Gilliam, each and every time, As a Gilliam fan, I always worry that he'll one day reach a place where he can't find any rat bastard executives to give him money anymore. Knowing he's making at least this one more film... that gives me hope. I like it.

I’m also really pleased that it was Phil Stubbs who broke this. That’s only appropriate. Phil’s been running the only significant Terry Gilliam fansite, and if he’s reporting this as a done deal, something that’s about to pop, then I’m sure that’s exactly what what’s about to happen. If you’re even remotely a fan of Gilliam’s work, you owe it to yourself to follow the link below and see what Phil knows. It’s great stuff.

Hi Harry,

Terry Gilliam is busy with preproduction on his new picture, "The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus". He has assembled a cast including Heath Ledger, Christopher Plummer and Tom Waits.

I've just updated my website with a large concept drawing of the Imaginarium itself, together with other details from the production.

Best wishes,
Phil

    Gilliam and Burton

    by series7

It would be awesome to see them both put out quality work like there older stuff with there upcoming movies. I always kind of saw these two being similar directors, with Burton being the more commercial one. Wouldn't be awesome if they made a movie together?

Series7, I'd like it if Tim Burton just made a good movie

    by spandau belly

It was a hard thing for me to accept that I just don't like Tim Burton's films. They've got great atmosphere and that's it.When I saw Pan's Labrynth it felt like the movie Tim Burton should've made and it made me realize that a good Burtonesque film could actually be done. But all Burton cares about is cool shots of fog and not about telling compelling stories. He usually gets Johnny Depp to play a fun character and that saves him a lot, but Burton has no sense of character developement.

    Tom Waits!!!!

    by runfoodrun

Awesome, arquably the greatest underappreciated artist of his time, I saw him in concert and it was the single greatest visual entertainment experience I've ever had. If anyone can capture an amazing performance from Waits it's Gilliam. He was great in Down By Law and Dracula as well, sweet.

    Gilliam has a funny laugh.

    by knuckleduster

Thus, I like him. Oh, and some of his movies. Wish he'd finish The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. Yeah, as if... Well, at least we got a good documentary out of it.

    Michael Palin.

    by thegoddamedbatman

Michael Palin is the reason Pyhthon won't get back together. They've had several offers, and everyone else has agreed to return. Also, Tim Burton isn't really in the same league as Gilliam. Tim Burton hasn't made a movie that's even somewhat bareable in over a decade. He had a period of about five years where he made alright movies. Beetlejuice - Ed wood. Or Batman, whatever came first. And even during that period, he had a lot of misses like Edward Scissor hands, and Batman returns.

    Fun little Tim Burton Game.

    by thegoddamedbatman

Okay, riddle me this, This Tim Burton movie is a Dark Fairytale about an outsider or loner, who are not generally understood by the pack? ANSWER: If you said, "all of them" you are correct, the untalented hack recycles the same formula always!

Tim Burton is not Mel Torme!

    by kikuchiyoboy

Hee hee. Seriously. Burton and Gilliam are entirely two entirely different kinds of artists. Burton has an interesting style with a nice little fairy tale touch, but he is in no way in the same league as Gilliam. Even though Gilliam may fail from time to time his films feel more passionate. They also have a little bit of weight to them and usually stick in your brain for quite some time.

Thank God Gilliam still pushes on.

    by c legion

He was the funniest Python, and if he's the reason they are not reuniting, then he's clearly the most intelligent one too. They will never recapture the old magic. Python is over, let it go, we still have their wonderful work. Palin has also created the greatest travelogue documentary's I've ever seen, but that's another matter. As for Gilliam, I found Tideland unwatchable, literally, but I love the guy and hope he comes up with something good.

    Amother Python movie wont happen...

    by lordrando

For the same reason the Beatles will not reunite. Or the original Stones. One of the members is unfortunately deceased. So a movie with Cleese, Gilly, Jones, and
Palin, will be just that, a movie with "former" Pythons, all in the cast. A Python movie by definition would involve Graham Chapman.

I remember a Gilliam interview in which he said that...

    by derlanghaarige

...the Python won't be back, because Graham Chapman is still adamant that he is dead. But that was when "Fear & Loathing" came out (wow, already 9 years ago!), so probably now it's another reason.

the difference between this and Mr Magorium

    by potsmokinalien

is that terry gilliam is a visionary who makes uncompromising movies the way he wants to make them. and zack helm is some douchebag who wrote a movie with a character named "Mr. Magorium" so it would rhyme with the word "Emporium" for the title.

    Tideland was not a botch

    by mukhtabi

Tideland was from what I could tell a very faithful adaptation of Mitch Cullin's strange, disturbing and fantastical novel. That's right kiddies its an adaptation. You can probably fault Mr. Gilliam for wanting to adapt that novel, but I don't think its a botch at all. Its a very bizarre, aberrant, yet strangely compelling film. I wish it had a little more fantasy in it, but hey the Imaginarium sounds chock full, so no biggie. He simply wanted to do the dark and nasty on screen and prove it was not so dark or nasty. Such an interesting man that Gilliam is.

    by biggles2_22

Misguided? Undecipherable mess? Disgusting subject matter? Thoroughly depressing? Yep, yep, yep, and yep. Gilliam's introduction to the film is very telling and somewhat defensive. Kind of like: "Hi. This is Terry Gilliam. I took a massive dump in the middle of your living room. While it may smell offensive to you, it was pooped from the rear end of a 50+ year old man and should be smelled with that perspective. My excrement on your living room floor may be offensive to you, but understand that I found it to be thoroughly engrossing. And I can assure you that my dump was not a botch. Enjoy."

    by knuckleduster

I love the way it doesn't fully feel like a Burton film, even though it obviously is. It's also his only film not scored by Danny Elfman (all credit to the masterful Howard Shore). Can't believe how little recognition this brilliant little film gets.

    by emeraldboy

One which really knocks you out visually. But it wont happen for two reasons Time and Budget. Gilliam causes panic amongst studio bosses. All Gilliam film look great but he has a huge problem controlling his ego. He is a bit like a builder, he says this will take three weeks and he is still working on the movie six months later. It takes a very brave studio to take him on.

    by biggles2_22

29% rating by Rotten Tomatoes and 5% by the Cream of the Crop is still too kind with the debacle that is Tideland. Look, I'm all for being enamored with Terry Gilliam, but Ed Wood had balls too. That didn't make any of his films great.

I'm a big Gilliam fan, but I must say...

    by darthcorleone

...Tideland was unwatchable. I only felt compelled to finish it out of some sort masochistic self-challenge. That little girl excruciatingly prattled on about every single stray thought that entered her imagination for two hours. Admittedly, she did it convincingly. I can tolerate and even enjoy that sort of thing from my nieces while they're trying to get me to play with them, so, yeah, I understand Gilliam's whole disclaimer about the eyes of a child. But Tideland was just utterly and completely painful. By the time the film reached the controversial bits, I didn't give enough of a damn to even care.

I think Tideland was an very challenging film that will possibly be regarded as something of a masterpiece in years to come.
It's not an easy film to enjoy but I loved it.
I did think Gilliam's disclaimer at the beginning of the film was odd.
It seemed to show a lack of faith.

I've seen interviews with this guy and seems to come across as a real nice guy. I really want him to have a success but I can't help feeling that he's past it now. The Brothers Grimm was an apalling film and I really hated it. There are a few directors like him though. Guys who have made landmark movies but are definitely of their era. John Carpenter is another. I guess not everyone can be a Scorcese or Spielberg.
