Hey folks, Harry here... StarTrek.com is telling us that ERIC BANA has been cast as the villain NERO in JJ's Star Trek. Now - we don't know much more than that. At one point it was rumored that Russell Crowe was in talks to play the villain - but alas - that's not happening. I like Russell, but I like Eric Bana just as much. Now here's the real question. Who or what is NERO? Now remember - this is supposed to be a relaunch of Classic Trek: The Younger Years - but if it is in that universe... they could find that it is actually the Nero that fiddled while Rome burned - due to an alien ship that came and abducted him. After which Emperor Nero was admitted into the Q league and - well... I don't even want to joke about that any further. Cuz - I really hope this isn't in the tradition of THAT version of Classic Trek. And even if it is... how amazing would it be to take the idea of those most absurd metaphoric episodes and produce them amazingly well? I can't fathom that.
Anyway... Eric Bana's the bad guy. I just can't wait to see who Kirk is. Maybe it'll be Brad Pitt - so we can have a rematch between Hector and Achilles. Who knows...

But will Bana have the chin implants he so desperately needs?
by gruntybear
That man has no fucking chin. Plus, how much Shakespeare will this Nero villain spout? Any bets?
-
Bana is pretty damn good.
-
But this still doesn't sell me a ticket.
-
Nice.
-
Can it even BE saved?
-
Hell, he was a charming but volatile psycho in "Chopper," and I think he could bring the same sort of charismatic but intense menace to a full-on bad guy role. I'm hoping for something like Alan Rickman in "Die Hard."
-
Hulk smash puny dorks, dweebs and geeks whbo make fun of way Eric Bana talks.
-
It had to be said.
-
Can't say I care for the character name, though. Kind of an eye-roller.
-
JJ does know that the Romulans have nothing to do with the Roman Empire of Earth's ancient history--or does he not?
-
wooo woooo woooo wooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
I'll never forget the first time I saw that movie. It was on IFC or something and by the time Chopper started stabbing Keithy George in the face, I was hooked. Such a great movie.
-
You're an over-critical fuck-head. How's your screenwriting career going?

Well unlike Russell Crowe, Eric Bana actually is Australian.
by paul t. ryan
Crowe is, like most famous "Australians", New Zealand born. I think this might be the first time an Aussie's been on Trek since Wendy Hughes appeared on TNG!
-
Play MLB2K7!
-
As I was reading the story about Bana, one sentence in Hulk talk would have been great... the whole damn post... OVERKILL!
-
If the rumors are true he will be playing a time traveling Romulan who goes back into the past to kill Kirk or Kirk's father. I think he is an inspired choice
-
A movie is only as good as it's villian. It's what made Wrath of Kahn so good.
-
...if they're going to make another Star Trek movie, at least they're trying something crazy instead of treading water for the 12th time. Bana's a good actor, so this news is good, I guess. Zachary Quinto is a pretty limited actor to have cast as your lead, but I guess Vulcans aren't supposed to be particularly emotive anyway. If they're going for big names to fill out the new roles, it'll be interesting to see who else is cast.
-
I mean seriosly besides the nerds who live with there parents "who are star trek nerds themselves" and have a model of the enterprise ontop of there tv.Sorry Harry.
But really, star treks been dead for years, even when the Tv show were going the life was sucked out of this thing back to God knows when. -
At least on every actor and statue I'VE ever seen.
-
Bana rocks, almost as inspired as, ironically, Norton becoming Hulk.
-
He would have been crap as a Romulan villain, if that's what the part is. Could he play Pike? Surely Pike's gonna be in the movie. And why isn't Liam Neeson in it playing a mentor character to the young Kirk?
-
It had to be said.
-
Bana's a cool guy.

Eric Bana signed on to a Star Trek movie? Count me in.
-
If you want it taken seriously that is. Eric Bana can save this franchise. With him being the villain, they have got to have some serious talent lined up for Kirk / Spock.

Yawn.

hell, why not.

CAAAAAAAN! -
john barrowman.
think about it. captain jack = captain kirk. that would be cool. -
ok, i think he's a bit too young, but he could have the looks and the attitude..
emile hirsch. -
Heath Ledger
James Franco
Chris Evans
Any of these guys could capture Kirkian snarkiness. I'd love James Franco, cause I think he's the best actor. -
Seriously?
-
Nero rules.
-
A little bird told me that the Nero thing is a misdirection, mostly because negotiations are still in play thus they don't want Bana's name to leak for the Kirk role. If all goes well, Bana just might be Kirk... which I think is inspired casting.
-
Cool news. Quite cool.
-
he has daddy issues. and he's been lost in the amazon. plus, he has a beard. doesn't ANYONE watch the news?
-
Variety just confirmed Bana as the villian. Called little bird to chew him out. He misunderstood. Bana was on a list for Kirk, but went on to nab this role. Bummer. Bana would have been a great Kirk.
-
Enough said.
-
actually, that is sort of true, per the books.
-
I thought that too, and then someone, Peter David or the Garfield Reeves people wrote a book about Trelene being like Q (John DeLance) godson/possibly son deal, where Trelene gets all powerful and blasts Q back to the beginning of time whilst tormenting the Enterprise crew...Q floats around time and space disembodied till somehow he recovers, I don't remember how, it also linke dQ to the wried pyshic dude that Kirk killed with the phaserrifle in the Kirk piolet thingy, the one without McCoy
-
Jonthan Rhys Meyers....the guy played Elvis AND Henry VIII for crissakes...plus he's got the JJ Abrams connection thru MI3...
-
Is Kirk... Absolutely should be. Play it serious and he is perfect!
-
Shermdawg is right. Jensen Ackles for Kirk. Goddamnit. Just watch one episode of Supernatural and tell me he isn't perfect.
-
HHmm, their might be some similarities. Man, they better not fuck this up.
-
Call me crazy but i think i can see that. Too bad he would probably laugh Abrams out of the room if he so much as suggested it.
-
Spook stabs Chopper and he says.....yeah you get the idea.
-
Ryan Reynolds for Kirk although I think he would have been a great choice for Neville in I AM LEGEND. Jack Black as Cortman would have been interesting too but nooooooo we get will smith. How bout Will Smith as Kirk?
-
Book it.
-
Get it? Nero? ...nevermind.

by enigmatypus
What's that you say????? There is???? WAH!!!!?!??!
-
Jonathon Rhys Meyers for Kirk is a fantastic idea; the guy is a great actor, and he could play the role very well. I kind of like the Matt Damon idea, but at the same time I am kind of hesitant. I think actors will always be identifiable with one particular role that really stands out, and for me, that'd be Jason Bourne. I could be wrong though, before those movies I thought of Damn as Will Hunting. Who knows.
Whoever Kirk is, I will see this movie. I am not a huge Trek fan at all (I think it's been dead for years due to horrible mismanagement of a great idea) but with Abrams at the wheel and Lindeloff writing the screenplay, my ass is in that seat. Also, am I the only one who hopes that Patrick Stuart gets a cameo in this?? -
thats funny. will he be in a pink uniform shirt?
-
Color me interested in this reboot.
-
At least there will be one fine actor in the movie... dont know about the others... Bana is an actor who inmediately raises the level of the movie he is in, even the less-than-great Hulk was improved by his presence... well done, J.J... dont screw this up!

by imfixingtodie
Chris Pine is also very good news, though I hope somehow he could do both. Loyalty to Carnahan, who really gave him his first showcase in SMOKIN' ACES might be a factor.

Ryan Reynolds would be ideal.

So Starbuck is the 5th cylon... Well, I didn't see that coming..
by v'shael
Thanks for the spoiler guys.
-
No problems with Bana playing a DVD burner but I've never got through a whole ep of Supernatural and if either of those dickheads end up anywhere near this Trek movie I won't be going anywhere near a theatre when it plays...
-
I think that I am done with that show since they seem to take pleasure in my pain and discomfort. How long have we been waiting for season 3 on DVD? How fucking lame was season 3? How gay ir it to give us a TV movie (razor) instead of a faster turn around on the main story? Split seasons....dead plotlines...oh and now Starbuck is the 5th what a FUCKING SHOCK...fuck you very much.

Yes, I know, it's old, but... -
Apparently I was misinformed by this site. Wah.
-
there's the baggage he'd bring from being such a high profile actor, personally I would'nt have a problem with it, and squaring up to the likes of Bana, well that would make for a seriously impressive Trek reboot.
-
Big name director, well known actors.. on Star Trek.
It's just wierd, man. -
If they go with the look of TNG Romulans - I'm trying to picture Bana with a bowl cut, pointed ears and a grey uniform with gigantic shoulder pads...
-
I was thinking about the casting choice for Kirk the other night, and as a fan of his performance (and little else) in the PUNISHER film, I'd have to say that I'd like to see Thomas Jane cast as Kirk! Any thoughts?
Others who merit consideration:
Mark Ruffalo (t'would be damn interesting)
Aaron Eckhart (busy with the whole Harvey Dent thing, but he can certainly pull off macho smartass)
Ben Foster (Not very Shatneresque, but a damn fine actor)
Jason Bateman (haven't seen the Kingdom, and his casting might well spur a trekker revolt, but then again ...)
Paul Rudd (Drop JJ, add Apatow, and you've got the greatest Trek film ever!! Rogen as Scotty! Michael Cera as Spock!)
And of course, for Uhura - Rosario Dawson!
-
...called Star Truck. Whole Idea lame and been lousy shows and movies for years. Lost-Guy not change that, just make dumber! Hulk smash stupid Lost-Guy!
-
...that Irish guy who used to beat Kirk up in school. Now THERE'S your movie.
-
can sing Nimoy's Bilbo Baggins song.
-
Jonthan Rhys Meyers should had been cast as Anakin. That is all.
-
Eric Bana FUCKING RULES so I'm over the moon to hear this now all we need is Paul McGillion confirmed as SCOTTY and then Jensen Ackles to be cast as KIRK and it's all good.
-
Don't you people read comic books? Honestly, you call this a nerd website.
-
So i'm hearing! He was cool in Smokin' Aces
-
People always slag off all the directors they hate here. Bay, PWS Anderson, McG, etc. This is my two cents. His tv show sucks. I hate it. Star Trek needs to be left alone before whole generations forget it was ever a GOOD tv show. All ST movies suck but Wrath of Kahn. And this fucking Cloverfield shit. Fuck you buddy. Your not worth all the effort just to understand your stupid trailer which is lame to begin with.
-
And still casting? Recipe for suck-cess.....
-
They like way too many of the shit adaptations.....Xmen, spidey, ghost rider...the list goes on. Comics are comics. Movies are movies. Movies with comic characters have never been done well. I personally just think its hack, slacker bullshit to turn comics into movies. Be creative. Its the easiest medium in the world to do anything you want. Problem is, the industry is so narrow about what they will burn 200 million making and distributing, they want familiar shit with built in audience so its less risky. Why do you think they used to make so many bible movies? Heres an idea. Make 20 ten million dollar movies instead of one megabudget. If 19 lose, and one is a smash...everyone wins.
-
I mean, Hulk was okay, but not because of anything Bana did. Didn't see Troy. And that new romantic comedy with Drew Barrymore bombed. I'm not a Trekkie, but I love the movie series and don't want to have a "reimagining" that could be so good get torpedoed by a lame bad guy. Because some films are only as good as the bad guy. Just look at Khan (compared with, say, V--Sybok sucked).

Jonathan Rhys Meyers - a good actor?!? Are you fucking sniffing
by gruntybear
Meyers apparently graduated from the two-tone Julia Roberts School of Acting. He has two - and only two - acting modes: petulant and vapid. (Like Julia has two modes - nostrils flared and unflared.) He was - by far - the weakest link in that ren faire soap "The Tudors." And that's saying something when you've got a squinty, constipated scene chewer like Sam Neill in the same production. Sam is quite obviously an alumni of the Denzel Washington/Morgan Freeman School of Never Acting, ie., he quite literally plays "Sam Neill" in every film he's ever been in.
-
Bana was in that, right? There--I corrected myself.
-
He's a non-entity, a wet paper towel. Lifeless. Useless.
-
RAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!
-
How is that possible? :0
-
we'll get a trailer for the movie early next year that shows absolutely nothing, then a viral marketing campaign that'll include: a website full of dancing tricorders and little tribbles that state ackward quotes, another website that'll post blurry pictures of people in alien costumes running away from something, and another website where Uhura is talking into a webcam about bladder problems. I look forward to this. And of course internet geeks will eat up this little bit of official and worthless information given by JJ Abrams and in turn create entire websites dedicated to this.
-
Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!
-
You're obviously forgetting about Munich. I'm pretty sure it's insanely better than Black Hawk Down.
-
Two hours of this Mick SOB beating the s**t out of Kirk until his shirt rips off! Hell, have him team up with that Irish ensign who freaked out from the crazy-water on the dying planet and took over the ship only to seranade the crew with his godawful renditions of old Irish songs. Two insane, drunken leprechaun motherf**kers are better than one, I always say!
-
I didn't catch "Munich." I'll take your word for it. But dammit, Jim, this is Star Trek we're talking about, so the bad guy has to be rilly rilly rilly good.
-
Call Malcolm McDowell once again. Tell him this time he REALLY gets to fuck up Kirk!

Any villain is better than that non-entity we got in Nemesis.
by themikejonas
"Don't you see, Picard? I'm you, just young and EEEEEVIL!"
-
We got it. Wrath of Khan was good. Nay, THE BEST ST film. And part of it is because of the villian Khan. But please, mister and miss producers, please, enough with the Khan clones. There are other ways to make peril in a movie than a single, named thespian playing the evil antagonist -- even one with a wig and good tanned pecs. Say what you will about ST:TMP, at least the peril was goddam enormous, planet-sucking device. Please stop following the template for a revenge factor movie.... not some revenging Klingon (III), pithy Vulcan sibling (V), another revenging sibling (VI), guy who can't face reality but dresses like Spike from Buffy (VII), S&M Borg chick (VIII), a plastic surgery reject (IX), or a bald college-aged goth kid(X).
