Read more on Bana casting here at startrek.com!!

Hey folks, Harry here... StarTrek.com is telling us that ERIC BANA has been cast as the villain NERO in JJ's Star Trek. Now - we don't know much more than that. At one point it was rumored that Russell Crowe was in talks to play the villain - but alas - that's not happening. I like Russell, but I like Eric Bana just as much. Now here's the real question. Who or what is NERO? Now remember - this is supposed to be a relaunch of Classic Trek: The Younger Years - but if it is in that universe... they could find that it is actually the Nero that fiddled while Rome burned - due to an alien ship that came and abducted him. After which Emperor Nero was admitted into the Q league and - well... I don't even want to joke about that any further. Cuz - I really hope this isn't in the tradition of THAT version of Classic Trek. And even if it is... how amazing would it be to take the idea of those most absurd metaphoric episodes and produce them amazingly well? I can't fathom that.

Anyway... Eric Bana's the bad guy. I just can't wait to see who Kirk is. Maybe it'll be Brad Pitt - so we can have a rematch between Hector and Achilles. Who knows...

Hell, he was a charming but volatile psycho in "Chopper," and I think he could bring the same sort of charismatic but intense menace to a full-on bad guy role. I'm hoping for something like Alan Rickman in "Die Hard."

...if they're going to make another Star Trek movie, at least they're trying something crazy instead of treading water for the 12th time. Bana's a good actor, so this news is good, I guess. Zachary Quinto is a pretty limited actor to have cast as your lead, but I guess Vulcans aren't supposed to be particularly emotive anyway. If they're going for big names to fill out the new roles, it'll be interesting to see who else is cast.

    by mezzanine

Jonathon Rhys Meyers for Kirk is a fantastic idea; the guy is a great actor, and he could play the role very well. I kind of like the Matt Damon idea, but at the same time I am kind of hesitant. I think actors will always be identifiable with one particular role that really stands out, and for me, that'd be Jason Bourne. I could be wrong though, before those movies I thought of Damn as Will Hunting. Who knows.

Whoever Kirk is, I will see this movie. I am not a huge Trek fan at all (I think it's been dead for years due to horrible mismanagement of a great idea) but with Abrams at the wheel and Lindeloff writing the screenplay, my ass is in that seat. Also, am I the only one who hopes that Patrick Stuart gets a cameo in this??

    MORE KIRK CASTING CHOICES

    by rightarm4rosario

I was thinking about the casting choice for Kirk the other night, and as a fan of his performance (and little else) in the PUNISHER film, I'd have to say that I'd like to see Thomas Jane cast as Kirk! Any thoughts?

    Others who merit consideration:

Mark Ruffalo (t'would be damn interesting)

Aaron Eckhart (busy with the whole Harvey Dent thing, but he can certainly pull off macho smartass)

Ben Foster (Not very Shatneresque, but a damn fine actor)

Jason Bateman (haven't seen the Kingdom, and his casting might well spur a trekker revolt, but then again ...)

Paul Rudd (Drop JJ, add Apatow, and you've got the greatest Trek film ever!! Rogen as Scotty! Michael Cera as Spock!)

And of course, for Uhura - Rosario Dawson!

They like way too many of the shit adaptations.....Xmen, spidey, ghost rider...the list goes on. Comics are comics. Movies are movies. Movies with comic characters have never been done well. I personally just think its hack, slacker bullshit to turn comics into movies. Be creative. Its the easiest medium in the world to do anything you want. Problem is, the industry is so narrow about what they will burn 200 million making and distributing, they want familiar shit with built in audience so its less risky. Why do you think they used to make so many bible movies? Heres an idea. Make 20 ten million dollar movies instead of one megabudget. If 19 lose, and one is a smash...everyone wins.

Has Eric Bana really been in a good film?

    by abominable snowcone

I mean, Hulk was okay, but not because of anything Bana did. Didn't see Troy. And that new romantic comedy with Drew Barrymore bombed. I'm not a Trekkie, but I love the movie series and don't want to have a "reimagining" that could be so good get torpedoed by a lame bad guy. Because some films are only as good as the bad guy. Just look at Khan (compared with, say, V--Sybok sucked).

  • Meyers apparently graduated from the two-tone Julia Roberts School of Acting. He has two - and only two - acting modes: petulant and vapid. (Like Julia has two modes - nostrils flared and unflared.) He was - by far - the weakest link in that ren faire soap "The Tudors." And that's saying something when you've got a squinty, constipated scene chewer like Sam Neill in the same production. Sam is quite obviously an alumni of the Denzel Washington/Morgan Freeman School of Never Acting, ie., he quite literally plays "Sam Neill" in every film he's ever been in.

I guess Blackhawk Down was okay

    by abominable snowcone

Bana was in that, right? There--I corrected myself.

    He's a non-entity, a wet paper towel. Lifeless. Useless.

Great, so in typical JJ Abrams fashion

    by qweruiop

we'll get a trailer for the movie early next year that shows absolutely nothing, then a viral marketing campaign that'll include: a website full of dancing tricorders and little tribbles that state ackward quotes, another website that'll post blurry pictures of people in alien costumes running away from something, and another website where Uhura is talking into a webcam about bladder problems. I look forward to this. And of course internet geeks will eat up this little bit of official and worthless information given by JJ Abrams and in turn create entire websites dedicated to this.

You're obviously forgetting about Munich. I'm pretty sure it's insanely better than Black Hawk Down.

Now there's an idea! Finnegan as villain!

    by kid z

Two hours of this Mick SOB beating the s**t out of Kirk until his shirt rips off! Hell, have him team up with that Irish ensign who freaked out from the crazy-water on the dying planet and took over the ship only to seranade the crew with his godawful renditions of old Irish songs. Two insane, drunken leprechaun motherf**kers are better than one, I always say!

I didn't catch "Munich." I'll take your word for it. But dammit, Jim, this is Star Trek we're talking about, so the bad guy has to be rilly rilly rilly good.

    Get over the Khan factor

    by eriamjh

We got it. Wrath of Khan was good. Nay, THE BEST ST film. And part of it is because of the villian Khan. But please, mister and miss producers, please, enough with the Khan clones. There are other ways to make peril in a movie than a single, named thespian playing the evil antagonist -- even one with a wig and good tanned pecs. Say what you will about ST:TMP, at least the peril was goddam enormous, planet-sucking device. Please stop following the template for a revenge factor movie.... not some revenging Klingon (III), pithy Vulcan sibling (V), another revenging sibling (VI), guy who can't face reality but dresses like Spike from Buffy (VII), S&M Borg chick (VIII), a plastic surgery reject (IX), or a bald college-aged goth kid(X).

Even Gene Rodenberry had his critics. See if you can name three of them.
