SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

It’s to promote the HD-DVD version of Kirk & Spock’s first season, due Nov. 20. Highly logical!

But is National CineMedia using cheap-ass pre-show advertainment projectors for this, or the beautiful DLP Cinema projectors used to show studio features?

SPECIAL EVENT: Remastered "Menagerie" in Theatres!

"STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES" EPISODE "THE MENAGERIE" TO BE PRESENTED IN SPECIAL BIG SCREEN THEATRICAL EVENT

National CineMedia's FATHOM, CBS Home Entertainment and STARTREK.COM Present Digitally Remastered Episodes Along With Never-Before-Seen Footage and Behind-the-Scenes Featurette in Nearly 300 Select Movie Theatres Nationwide on November 13

Complete First Season of "Star Trek: The Original Series"
Debuts in High-Definition on DVD One Week Later

Centennial, Colo. – Oct. 5, 2007 — "Star Trek" fans can now boldly go where no man has gone before to see two of the most famous episodes of the original television series — their local movie theatre. "Star Trek: The Original Series" is being beamed onto the big screen in a special one-night event in select movie theatres nationwide on Tuesday, Nov. 13th, featuring original Season 1 episodes "The Menagerie" Parts 1 and 2, digitally remastered in High-Definition and Cinema Surround Sound. Fans will also be greeted by an introduction from creator Gene Roddenberry's son, Eugene "Rod" Roddenberry, and given a behind-the-scenes look at how the episodes were digitally re-mastered from the original negatives — including the reinvention of the old TV show special effects using new CGI animation, and the orchestral re-recording of the show's theme music — in a new 30-minute in-theatre exclusive featurette.

"Star Trek: The Original Series" special in-theatre event will be presented by NCM FATHOM, CBS Home Entertainment and STARTREK.COM on Tuesday, Nov. 13th at 7:30 p.m. local time in nearly 300 participating AMC, Cinemark, Georgia Theatre Company and Regal Entertainment Group movie theatres across the country. Tickets for this special one-time-only event are on-sale now for $12.50 at presenting theatre box offices and online at www.FathomEvents.com. For a complete list of presenting theatre locations, please visit the website (theatres are subject to change).

A week after the special screenings, the entire first season of "Star Trek: The Original Series," from Paramount Home Entertainment and CBS Home Entertainment, will be available in High-Definition on DVD for the first time. The 10-disc boxed set offers the best of both worlds with each disc offering a Standard-Definition picture on one side and a High-Definition picture on the other. The set will be available on Nov. 20th.

The national in-theatre event leading up to the DVD launch will include an introduction by creator Gene Roddenberry's son, Eugene "Rod" Roddenberry, and the two-part episode "The Menagerie," which features footage from the original "Star Trek" pilot episode titled "The Cage." "The Cage" (first screened in 1965 and rejected by NBC — not airing on television until a full color print was discovered in the 1980s) featured Leonard Nimoy as Spock — the only character that made it from the pilot to the "Star Trek" series — as well as Jeffrey Hunter in the role of the original commander of the starship Enterprise, Captain Christopher Pike.

In the two-part episode "The Menagerie" (Season 1, Episode 11 — originally aired on television on November 17, 1966), we rejoin Spock and the new (and familiar) crew of the Enterprise including William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk, DeForest Kelley as Dr. McCoy, James Doohan as Scott, and Nichelle Nichols as Uhura. In this episode, Spock is on trial for hijacking the Enterprise, telling a strange tale of former Enterprise Captain Pike's imprisonment on Talos IV 13 years earlier and the past crew's attempts to rescue him — shown in "flashback" footage taken from the original pilot episode.

"Star Trek" debuted on Sept. 8, 1966 on NBC in the U.S., telling the story of the crew of the starship Enterprise and its five-year mission, "to boldly go where no man has gone before." William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk and Leonard Nimoy as Spock starred in the series which addressed issues of the 1960s including war and peace, imperialism, class warfare, racism, human rights, sexism and feminism. After just three seasons, the show was cancelled and the last episode aired on June 3, 1969, but it became popular in reruns and a cult following developed. The "Star Trek" franchise went on to include the TV series "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (1987-1994), "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" (1993-1999), "Star Trek: Voyager" (1995-2001), "Star Trek: Enterprise" (2001-2005), and "Star Trek: The Animated Series" (1973-1974) as well as 10 feature films.

    by largojr

there is NO WAY they would be wlling to spring for the costs of renting DLP systems for all those theaters... most of the theaters I've been to STILL cut as many corners as they possibly can, and none of them are going to be willing to foot even PART of the cost either. It's going to be yet another "coulda been fantastic... but ended up being meh" events.

    by anakin whoopass

Since Poltergeist was originally a feature film, a theatrical re-release with cheap-vid projection is objectionable. To play devil's advocate, this showing of Star Trek is an upgrade from the quality of its original release as a 1960s TV show. No, it's not the best presentation theoretically possible, but if the economics aren't there to do DLP they sure aren't there to strike 35mm prints. I'm sure someone will say they've seen TOS film projected and this digital video stuff can't live up to that, but you're a small elite minority.

Holding up on the big screen

    by anakin whoopass

Actually, the footage from "The Cage" will probably look pretty good, by 1960s standards anyway. As a pilot, it was going to be viewed by network executives in a screening room before it would ever be on a TV. And now Kirk-era part of "The Menagerie" has spiffy digital mattes such as the new view out the window of Pike's hospital room.

    Fuck Fathom.

    by the_patriot

Fathom/National Cinemedia can't manage to get their shitty system working even here in Denver/Englewood where their HEADQUARTERS is. That shouldn't give anyone else any real hope. It doesn't matter what they advertise, these systems are NOT high definition. They are NOT in Dolby Digital sound. Here in Denver if you have the choice, go to Greenwood Plaza - it will be passable. If you go to Denver Pavilions or Colorado Mills, you're wasting your time. (I am a projectionist and have dealt with 35, DLP, and these crappy Christie preshow systems for years now.) Just sayin. Don't waste your cash. Put it toward buying the shiny set of discs to watch at home.

So we shouldn't go to AMC or Regal theaters because...

    by negative man

...they are founding members of Fathom? As far as I know, Fathom is an marketing company. They do those 'The 20' (or whatever it's called) and 'First Look' commercials we see before the previews. So I'm figuring NBC has hired them to produce the event, but all content and final ideas are NBC. Fathom will be using the equipment and screens provided by the theaters themselves. So crappy theater, crappy screening. Sorry, I'm really missing the point of a boycott.Maybe a better reason to boycott is simply: You're paying to see regular DVD content on a bigger screen that won't look as good as it will on a decent home system. Not to mention $12.50 to see an episode of a TV show that was not filmed in widescreen on a...wide screen! The image will be a big square in the middle of the screen. Wow. Shitty.Sounds more like NBC is trying to rape Trek fans (yet again) while advertising the newest Trek product.

    WTF...?

    by the moseph

Wait a minute...so, if I want the remastered original series in HD I gotta pay around $100 more than the set is actually worth (I'd wait for the price to drop, but at the rate these things usually happen, the end of the world will come first) and now not only are they trying to get all of us into a theater to watch a TELEVISION episode that we've probably all seen, dozens of times in some cases, but they're expecting us to pay more for the tickets than we would to see the latest Hollywood blockbuster shot in digital? And one we will be able to watch mere days later in HD at home?

    Wrong answer...

    ...and yes...I know...

    by the moseph

Yes. I am aware this is the remastered version so technically speaking we haven't seen it dozens of times. But we have seen it...and most of us who might actually own HD equipment have an HDTV to watch it on...and some of those have some damn nice bigass screens...so wait a couple of days and watch it then. Don't give these people the satisfaction.

No loss for no BR release

    by film11

What is superior about Blu-Ray. Some BR Player can't even play the recent FANTASTICX FOUR movie! HD-DVD has the 51 GB disc (that's one more GB than BR), they are not region-encoding (while BR is), HD-DVD is web-enabled (BR is not), titles like SUPERMAN RETURNS and SHOOTER have no lossless audio on BR but have them on HD-DVD...and HD-DVD offers all that for hundreds of dollars less! Doesn't take brain surgery to determine which is superior. (For the record, right now I don't own either format.)

    HD-DVD 51 gb disc?

    by mattmanreturns

Film11, no title has used a 51 gb HD disc that size yet, because most HD players wouldn't be able play it. BluRay's superior, that's never been an argument. But HD is still good enough, so I don't personally care which wins, just as long as one format does and this stupid HD war ends.

HD DVD is losing! Toshiba are morons!

    by sonoftorah

Toshiba were in such a rush to get the first High Definition disc out that they figured that a 30 Gig capacity disc would be enough. Oh how wrong they were! Sony relaxed and released Blu Ray a number of months later, with a disc that could contain a full 50 Gig of video.

Toshiba have realised they are fucked, and have resorted to backhanders to the likes of paramount to support a format that is losing sales. SEVENTY percent of all High Definition discs sold are in the Blu Ray format. Why?

Because it is the better format. Fuck Paramount for taking a bribe to drop Blu Ray! And fuck Michael Bay for supporting them!

    by minderbinder

Much of the sound of it comes from the old fashioned recording technique and especially the female singer. They'll have to be careful to really recreate the original version or there will be much bitching.
