Herc’s Seen The Season's First Episode of 30 ROCK, Now With SeinfeldVision!!
SPOILER ALERT !!
I am – Hercules!!
Still don't love Tina Fey? She's on Conan right now talking about the 24-inch replica of the Millenium Falcon she kept in her room as a child.
NBC says of tonight's "30 Rock":
SEINFELDVISION
The gang at "30 Rock" returns from their summer hiatus. Liz's (Tina Fey) excitement to be back and see Jack (Alec Baldwin) is quickly squashed when he tells her that despite what she thinks, she is not over Floyd. Jack also tells her about his plan for SeinfeldVision, which entails using NBC-owned footage from Seinfeld's show and inserting him into NBC's current shows. Jerry Seinfeld (Guest Star Jerry Seinfeld) shows up at Jack's office upset about SeinfeldVision. Meanwhile, Jenna (Jane Krakowski) has gained weight over the summer after doing the musical, "Mystic Pizza: The Musical!" and Kenneth (Jack McBrayer) becomes Tracy's (Tracy Morgan) office wife when Tracy's wife kicks him out. Jerry Seinfeld guest stars; Lonny Ross, Judah Friedlander, Scott Adsit, Keith Powell, Katrina Bowden and Maulik Pancholy also star.
What NBC isn’t telling you lurks in the text invisible:
* All of Jack’s unscripted summer replacement shows were big hits, including “America’s Next Top Pirate,” “Are You Stronger Than A Dog” and “MILF Island.” The latter starred 50 eighth-grade boys.
* We actually see Seinfeld inserted into “Special Victims Unit,” “Heroes” and “Deal or No Deal.”
That’s just the teaser. Funny stuff, and Fey demonstrates one more time she knows how to put the words in Alec Baldwin's mouth!
Remember back when “30 Rock” started a year ago? It aired Wednesday nights, paired with the Lithgow/Tambor sitcom “20 Good Years.”
Just for fun, let’s revisit some excerpts from our very first “30 Rock” talkback, Oct. 11, 2006:
“We are 10 minutes into it, I am waiting for the humor.” -- talkbacker “NudeandAroused”
“No, Tina Fey is not funny. Never has been. So, devoid of any discernable talent, Tina Fey left SNL in Downey Jr./Hall-style 1980's shambles for a sitcom that obviously won't mirror that failure. Personally, I am glad she did this project and drug Dratch with her; I can finally watch SNL again with falling asleep.” -- talkbacker “Heckles”
“Not Good. This show wasn't good at all. The jokes were infantile at best and the show felt like one of the overly long skits that SNL tends to run.” -- talkbacker “Sethworld”
“Meh... Was looking forward to this one and it failed to impress me.” … -- talkbacker “obiwayne”
“The Wacky Sax Music Has Got to Go.
That went out of style circa 1987. At first, I thought it was supposed to be intentionally corny, then I had a knot in the pit of my stomach when I realized it wasn't.” -- talkbacker “tonagan”
“I turned it off after Alec Baldwin's 2 minute talk about the GE stove was followed by a commercial about the same stove. I prefer to know when the commercial's starting so I can go piss.” -- talkbacker “Barndorfer”
“just marginally entertaining. Just watched the first episode...so not good.” -- talkbacker “Rupee88”
“Didn't even smile once. Glib substituted for wit. This show seemed so forced and unfunny.” -- talkbacker “Mr.NiceGuy”
“the writing fucking sucks. That Ally MacBeal chick is still hella cute though. Great to see the show is a ratings failure.” -- talkbacker “wash”
“That Pilot Was Painful. Baldwin was wasted, Tina Fey can't act to save her life (or apparently write a non-hackneyed sitcom.) 20 Good Years was horribly formulaic, but it was still better than 30 Rock thanks to Lithgow and Tambor mugging their asses off and going off-script (a drunk Lithgow to his pregnant daughter: "You're so ferocious and round!") 30 Rock's got nothing going for it at all, unless you think Fey's presiding over one of the worst prolonged slumps in SNL history gives her some sort of special insight into salvaging crappy comedy. Hey, maybe that's it - the show's *supposed* to be unfunny, and they're doing a pomo Andy Kaufmanesque sort of thing... -- talkbacker “Anton_Sirius”

Except for "Lost." Then the reverse is true.
-
I enjoyed the first season and will probably DVR tomorrow's episode. Wish I could tune in but it'll mostlikely conflict with baseball.
Tina Fey did a good job ith this program. -
"30 rock" is greater than great.
-
Thank god they kept it on. Dumb asses go watch Life According to Jim. Idiots.
-
Just like arrested developments first season. When a comedy gets its second season they've had time to flesh out their jokes and find out which ones work (Gob's magic tricks or any seen with Kenneth) and which ones don't (any seen with Marta or Tracy Morgan and the little blue man). I think its the opposite with dramas. Heroes first season was pretty good but the second one blows just because they relied so heavily on the twists, there is nothing surprising the second time around. But I do take into account there have only been two eps so far.
Anyway. I love 30 rock and can't wait to see Seinfeld and Baldwin together. -
I have yet to see an episode of this show that I did not laugh at. The sequence with Jack taking a week to film a commercial was easily one of the funnier things on television last season. This is possibly the most anticipated comedy this season for me.
-
Somewhere there's a room full of executives who just can't wrap their heads around the fact that this show is a bomb. It's never been funny, not for a second. The self-reflective notion that NBC can't get anyone to watch this kind of crap without somehow getting Jerry Seinfeld to show up in it is clever, but unfortunately it only makes the show's weakness that much clearer... next week, there will be no Seinfeld and we'll back to the usual laugh-free exploits of the regular cast.
-
Never gets old... To be honest I thought the show took several episodes to hit its rhythm, so I don't see the shame in ragging on the pilot, it was disjointed and tried too hard. But fair play to Fey, who I was never a fan of, once it had clicked it was a fun sit-com with a couple of characters too many, but still, Baldwin and Morgan did fine jobs...
-
I'm a supervisor at a movie theater and I know quite a few of us couldn't stand Seinfeld's monologue at the Oscars this past year. Just wasn't funny at all and the timing was odd. The guy is a serious douche; never cared for his show before and now I just can't stand him. But hey, Supernatural is back today!
-
a gang of movie theatre supervisors are planning the assasination of Jerry Seinfeld. This group of curious people who notioursly lack a sense of humour are twitching their fingers in delight as the plan of burying him alive in cornflakes unfolds.
-
The pilot for 30 Rock was pretty fucking awful.. I don't think it was really until episode 3 or 4 that it really started to hit it's stride
-
...she needs to keep her glasses on.
-
Easily the best slam of talkbackers in recent memory. HUZZAH! Also... KNEEL BEFORE LIZ LEMON! KNEEL!
-
the funniest tv comedy i've seen in a long time. Alec Baldwin is just gold in this series and I can't wait for more. I laughed out loud many many times during each episode last season . Hope this season will be just as good if not better.
-
And get cancelled? Oh, wait, this is not on Fox
-
lol with all the rip they get on how they suck since the Seinfeld ( most of that coming froming other NBC shows ) this plot isn't too far off base. Plus I want more of Dr. Spaceman. He cracks me up.
-
Wow, did I say that? Well, obviously the show changed. It is hilarious. I became quite addicted to it towards the end of he season. I am glad I was wrong.
-
You know, the ones where I said "this week was acutally kind of funny" and "I think this show is getting better"? Sometimes a show takes time to grow on you. (And the bad soundtrack in the pilot is still relevant.)
-
Tina Fey's SNL stinct was INSANELY overrated. To be fair, SNL has been beyond saving for...Y-E-A-R-S! But you gotta give her props for 30 ROCK; great show. Hope the ratings pick up this year.
-
I mean, at least throw in "stop sippin' on the Hater-ade!" or "see you later, alli-hater," you fucking tools. But no, I haven't seen the show. Although I did enjoy Jay Mohr's impersonation of Tracy Morgan.
-
But then they scaled back no talent Draich and gave Fey a character to play.
-
I stand by the first post of that talkback:
thought it was great...

Every scene made me laugh out loud. I hope the rest of the series is as good. -
Only beaten by The Office.
-
Those old talkbackers are right. I had to FORCE myself to watch this thing at first. I literally gave it 5 chances before I got into it. I've never done that before, given a show so many tries, but I felt like I should be liking it. I do. It's good. Alec Baldwin is amazing, the page kid is amazing. Rachel Dratch's cameos are cringeworthy, and I think she's ok in other stuff on SNL. But every time she is doing a little part on 30 Rock that is a wasted potential joke for someone new or someone else...instead it's just more of Dratch's creepy overacting characters. They stick out like a sore, sick thumb. Yuck.
-
Did you like it? It says you've seen it but you don't really tell us what YOU think. Or what anyone thinks of this episode specifically. Unless your review is invisotext...which would be kinda dumb.
-
So suck it, do it the worm.
-
Tina was so hot on Conan last night in that black dress.
-
was NBC itself pimping the living shit out of STUDIO 60 and playing 30 ROCK down when they advertised it along with 20 GOOD YEARS, as if that was the superior program... man that shit makes me laugh now.
-
this show has improved a lot since the pilot particularly in the way the actor's gelled into their characters and the ensemble cast meshing together. The difference with 30 Rock vs most sitcoms though is that it had a decent start (for a pilot) and it had abundant potential with all the talent working in front of and behind the camera with additional cameo talent streaming in from SNL. The premise also allows the writers to be far more creative with their episodes then sitcoms that are locked in to a confined story.
-
May want to edit that first line, Herc.
-
It's almost as good as Arrested Development. The first few eps showed promise but were a bit rocky (Still loved how they were at "Sin City Cabaret" in the BX in the pilot), then the show became brilliant with the "Jack Meets Dennis" and "Tracy Does Conan" episodes. After that it found it's footing and is consistently funny. I think this show deserves to find a larger audience. I also think that is the shitty "Scrubs" has managed to survive 7 seasons on Low Ratings, 30 Rock should be given a pass on it's low ratings. And the Snapple Product Placement gag was hysterical.
-
MORE PLEASE!!!!

THE SQUIRMING AND SPIN CONTROL OF THE TALKBACKERS!
-
Tina Fey is still not funny. SNL was still absolutely abysmal with her as head 'writer'. While 30 Rock isn't a failure as I predicted, it's still a mystery to me why it's on air and Studio 60 is gone. I can see that Baldwin’s comedic timing is nails on 30 Rock and that he is the one bright spot on that show. He can take her drivel and deliver it so it sounds like Larry David wrote it. The show won an Emmy for Outstanding Comedy... so? Will & Grace did. Sex & The City did. Hell, even The Monkees won back in the day. So the one point I will concede is that 30 Rock is on par with The Monkees. Quote me on that next season, Herc. The Office is easily the funniest show on TV. Go crack a Zima and enjoy another hackneyed season of 30 Rock.
-
Herc doesn't do nuance or even "this show is pretty good." It's either hype something relentlessly or not at all.
Personally, I said last January: "The cast is superb and incredibly talented. But let's face it - the show is not... funny!"
I agree the show got better. I still watch it for the cast and it's still hit or miss. The season finale in June was painfully awful!
-
Really?
-
Come on!! Having to clean out Brian Williams office EVERY day? Alec Baldwin? Tina's ex boyfriend-The Beeper King?
This show is laugh out loud funny. -
But... it isn't! It's clever, well-written, smart... but I can't remember ever laughing out loud.
OK, maybe when Jack said "I'm waiting for a call from 1983." -
She's Tina in name only!
-
This show will never measure up to the likes of newcomers Cavemen, Carpoolers, and Chuck.
Sincerely,
The entire Midwest -
Clearly it didn't leave the best first impressions, but people DID believe in it and kept watching, and it only got funnier and funnier and ended up pulling the Emmy. Viewership can be impressive - take Jericho, for example. Sure we drink a lot of Haterade, but we still have some faith.
-
The White Diamonds commercial spoof was fucking hilarious. That was pretty laugh out loud funny.
-
Lucky bastard!
-
...Last Comic Standing winner John Reep. Those forward thinking hipster flyover states enjoy their yucks. Yawn. Did Tina Fey ever write for Hee-Haw?
-
Tracy Jordan on Conan was where the show really kicked into gear for me. The early shows were pretty hit and miss. But from the fourth or fifth show on, it was gold. Alec Baldwin is better than network television deserves.
-
Haha, good one. Rivals that of Bush. Anyway, best network sitcom since Arrested Development. Love Alec Baldwin (as usual) and the rest of the cast including Brian Fellows. For once a project where Tina Fey doesn't have me eyeballing low-hanging structural aspects in my office with which to hang myself. All in all, kudos, and I hope it sticks around.
-
i would've gone into the future, watched 30 Rock, returned to the past, made my log in name "Dr. Spaceman" and then when people watched 30 Rock several years later, they'd be all "Hey Spaceman, did you base your name off that guy on that show?" and i'd be all "fuck off this has been my name for years! tina fey ripped me off!" so what was i saying... hmmm i guess my point is this show is awesome.
-
That was rather envelope pushing for network TV.
-
I, of course, mean Earl. Cough.
-
Remember when he wanted to leave?
-
Hahahaha...
-
Was a bit of a nod to his NewsRadio appearance with Bill McNeil splicing Jerry's voice into an insane interview? The shows really are similar in a lot of ways.
-
Like you've got $4 million lying around?
-
I loved that line too!
-
$4 million is a bit much for NBC.
-
i was in the same boat as you guys. thought it was just ok, with a few chuckles here and there (half expected herc to be quoting me up there), but when i rewatched it on the dvd after already being familiar with the characters and their relationships i laughed my ass off.
-
The show started poorly and improved, gained momentum with a lot of positive critical buzz and then scored at the Emmys. NBC rewards it by shifting it's timeslot so it's not buried opposite Grey's Supernatural CSI. But they still lack faith and are going for the desperation play of frontloading many episodes with name guest stars. Trying to promote guesting on 30 Rock as the new "guest villain on Batman" Hollywood fad. Thats just sad. Had mixed feelings about this episode, though. I either wanted less Seinfeld and more 30 Rock... or funnier Seinfeld.
-
and it is great.
-
No, this is just how I sound when I cry!
-
...something OLD.
-
and got tiresome real fast though
-
The pilot was kinda weak. But they ramped up so quickly, that for the second year straight, I didn't have a problem with the
Emmy for Best Comedy (I was pissed that Scrubs wasn't nominated over 2.5 Men, but the winner didn't bother me). -
all I know of Tina Fey is Mean Girls and that was alreet....I hope to Christ this isnt as big a let down as the Sarah Silverman Programme...I mean Jesus Christ, what happended there? I used to think she was funny, but then I saw her foeful Emmy introduction (that diahorrea bit was crap-pun intended) and then I finally saw her show last night....unwatchable.
-

-
I thought he wasn't going to be on the show anymore since his incident with the phone, am I wrong? I hope I am because he definitely makes the show still.
-
He's staying on till his contract runs out.
What else is he going to do? -
I saw the horrible Pilot and have since watched a couple of shows and it hasn't gotten any better. What gives? This is just typical NBC; every comedy show they have is built like it's meant for children but peppered with adult themes, take My Name is Earl for instance. Is the "Dee'dee'dee'dee'dee" sound-track really necessary to tell me it's a light-hearted comedy and It's annoying how every character talks like they are member of Sesame Street in some twist to appeal to their mouth-breathing audience. "Now we're a comedy.. see, it's written on my shirt. Comedy. I'm likeable, very likeable..Look at the way I'm talking to you. Not a threat.. FART HARHARHAR. MEN KISS HARHARH.." this among other complaints. I mean I'd rather watch a telatubby fuck a stuffed cat for half and hour - sound great on paper dun'it? I'm sure NBC's line up does too.
30 ROCK WON AN EMMY?! (now I know why I stopped paying attention) I mean I'd love to have a go at Tina Fey but I wouldn't give her an Emmy to get her in the sack.
-
and it confirmed everything I thought about the show last year, mildly amusing at best. The " I like Lost" thing was funny, but much like SNL you have to sit through a lot of mediocre, obvious or flat out unfunny jokes to get to the one or two genuinely funny jokes per episode. I can see why this show won the emmy, it makes perfect sense that a group of people that think that Keifer Sutherland is a better actor than Ian McShane or Hugh Laurie and think that Boston Legal and Grey's Anatomy are better shows than The Wire, Deadwood, The Shield, Rome, BSG and Lost would think that this is the best comedy on T.V.
-
cos I looked it up on imdb and Lithgow aint there.
-

-
james spader looks like scott baio.
-
They still have an annoying amount of in-show advertising. I thought the episode last night was funny (first time watching), but got sick of seeing 'Bee Movie' on every TV a character walked by.
-
Show has gone down hill fast! Getting close to Ugly Betty in the annoying music, character, and story line departments. Seinfeld sucks without Larry David penning for him. The OFFICE rules!
-
Yep. And this one is no exception. Second season, same as the first. Rinse. Repeat.
-
Except that it's not entertaining, funny or smart.
But other than that, very close. I see the comparison.... (one of those "ironic" comparisons, I think, right?) -
They've only shown ONE episode this year!
