Here Comes THE RED BARON!! Is His Smokin' Hot Effects Reel Better Than His Pizza??

Merrick here...
There's a RED BARON movie coming from Germany, where it'll be released in February of next year. HERE's the official movie site. In case you're not familiar with "The Red Baron", it's the nickname of Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen - a German fighter pilot badass who racked up 80 confirmed kills during World War I. While he officially died in 1918, his essence later became the scourge of Snoopy in PEANUTS & started a popular line of frozen pizzas. Anyways... Some material from the film is showing up online and it looks...pretty...damn...cool! Here is a YouTube video of effects company Pixomondo's work on the film.
Okay, so that video quality sucks. HOWEVER, you can see the same reel (with infinitely superior clarity) via a large, glorious QuickTime playback HERE!!! The movie is apparently shot in English language (for better or worse)...so it's safe to assume it'll be exported to some extent. There's no word on a possible release in the States at this time. Thanks to Darth Gore for calling this to our attention. It's intriguing. More on this as more comes in...

That movie looks rad-ass! And uh, nobody went to see Flyboys cuz the FX looked like a cut-scene from a video game. This stuff looks....real. They must have used real planes and miniatures for some of the shots, or maybe it's just some new really revolutionary German CG, but damn, it looked exciting and I only peeped the YouTube version. I just saw that Til Schweiger is in the movie. You probably know him from The Replacement Killers (He was the killer that wasn't Danny Trejo), Tomb Raider 2, King Arthur, Deuce Bigalow 2 and Driven. Yes, his filmography sucks, but he is pretty likeable anyway. And von Richthofen is played by Matthias Schweighöfer who is a very good actor. Let's see how this turns out.

    by Bruce Leroy

Regardles of how the film will turn out to be. It atleast looks great. What i don't understand is why the Dutch are never willing to invest in movies like the German's do. All they make is shit movies based on children's books. Yes, i am Dutch...here endeth the rant.

  • Oct. 3, 2007, 1:56 p.m. CST

RE: Bruce Leroy and Dutch films

    by ShadowMaker

Bruce, first: there are economics at stake. There are more Germans then there are Dutchmen. So, they can make more expensive films. Second: it's not true. 'Character' (you know that Dutch Oscar winner) was a great film(and expensive) not based on a children's book. 'Blackbook' was an original story. Third: most Dutch 'children's movies are much better than the so called adult ones. Go and watch 'Lang leve de koningin' 'Het Zakmes' 'Het paard van Sinterklaas' and others. I don't know what shit movies you're referring to. And yes, I'm Dutch too!

    Dutch films

    by Bruce Leroy

Hey there ShadowMaker, Yes i know economics are a factor. True. But it's not the only factor. I'm not talking about the oscar winners (i knew someone was going to slap that in my face). I'm talking about the genre films. Horror, sci-fi, or hell a big adventure film like Red Baron. It's not impossible to get funding for those kind of films. It's the mentality of the dutch filmfunds and networks that bothers me. That they are only willing to invest in kids movies and family friendly content only or artistic stuff. Yes i've seen all those films like Lang leve de koningin, het Zakmes, Minoes, Ja zuster, nee zuster etc. My sister has little kids if you must know. If you like them, well good for you. I guess your the demographic. It's just not my cup of tea. The Dutch can do better and more then that. The will is just not there.

I'd love to see the old reels of that many planes in the sky, oh yeah they don't exist, because they're exaggerating in this movie. Be realistic, just because you have CGI and can create anything you want, doesn't mean you have to go overboard. Keep it realistic, grounded in reality.

    by Southpaw Samurai

Calling Germany in WW1 'evil' or the 'bad guys' is completely biased as the first world war featured sides almost morally identical and there wasn't even ideological differences. And to call Richthofen a 'nazi' is complete ignorance. He only scored about a quarter of his kills in the triplane, although that's the plane he's famous for just because he was reaching the height of his international fame during that time. As for his 80 confirmed kills, whether by choice or influenced by Germany's desire to keep him alive, he often didn't get into the dogfights when he could avoid it and instead kept high and aware of the entire situation, then diving after loners who broke out of the knifefight. While some fault him for this, given the track record of his squadrons, it's pretty obvious he was tactically intelligent and resourceful and it rubbed off on his comrades and subordinates. This should be a fun picture and, as others have said, certainly can't be worse than Flyboys... at least the Germans aren't all flying Dr.I's.....

What, Flyboys from the German perspective? No thanks! The damn Germans were evil and have always been evil, way before WWII. I like American WWI and WWII movies the best, you get to see the krauts get slaughtered, makes me happy. Now if movie productions would just show how evil Russians have always been, we'd be alright. We need more movies with Russians getting slaughtered. Oh and Red Baron pizza sucks!

OK, it seems US educational standards in the field of history are as poor as they are in science. Are some of you seriously invoking the Nazis?

World War I was ostensibly a conflict between the Entente Forces of the British Empire, France and Russia and the Central Powers of Germany, Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire. America only joined the war in the closing stages, when it was revealed by British intelligence that Berlin was trying to incite Mexico to declare war on the US. Even then it refused to call itself part of the Allied forces, insisting it was merely an 'associated power'.

The horrific loss of all Allied and American lives in that final year would have been far lessened if General Pershing had done the intelligent thing and acquiesced to requests from the Allied commanders for American units to reinforce British and French frontline force, instead of insisting on a series of tactically suicidal isolationist frontal assaults.
