McShane Not Optimistic About DEADWOOD Movies!!

Published at:  Oct 04, 2007 2:22:50 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

"I just got a call on Friday from ... a dear friend of mine, who told me that they're packing up the ranch," “Deadwood” star Ian McShane tells Cinematical. "They're dismantling the ranch and taking the stuff out. That ship is gonna sail. Bonsoir, Deadwood."

Of course, "packing up" and "dismantling" the sets doesn't necessarily mean producers are hacking up the set and selling it for kindling, but McShane does say he wouldn't be available to reprise Al Swearenegen for at least another year.

Read all of Cinematical’s story on the matter here.

Deadwood is gone. One of the best shows in more than a few years has come to an end. I think it ended at the right time, on top. Is it possible that Deadwood has ended at the right time? Does it need the movies to "end?"

...with all the cocksucking creatively bankrupt ass-flush that clogs up our airwaves, is it too much to ask to give Deadwood's sizeable fanbase one stinking little DVD movie? It is? I thought so. That's another opportunity to make money off me you just lost, execs. Ir could have been about a day in the life of Mr Wu for all I care, featuring anyone else they can get in a brief cameo. Bah! But to Mcshane I say: thanks for the good fucking work. You should now be getting the kind of roles Pacino gets offered, in my opinion.

    by penetron

David Milch turned his back on a truly original series. Too bad it ended with such an anti-climatic plot. Then he gives us John From Cincinnati. A truly shitty, unwatchable series. Although, I did watch every episode hoping to see some of the genius exhibited in Deadwood. HBO and Milch can suck my wrinkly ball sack.

Deadwood needed a fourth season to wrap everything up and burn the set down. As it stands now, the entire series feels incomplete. It reminds me of what happened with Millennium -- that series was canceled in 1999, and it truly needed one more season.

Although the 3rd season was average, the 2nd season was without a doubt one of the most gripping seasons of television ever - I put it up against ANY season of the X-Files.

I Love Me Some Deadwood - HBO Has Lost It!

    This totally proves my thesis

    by zoefan

HBO really has never really known what it was doing. They've just been extremely lucky over the years. If you were to ask executives if they thought the Sopranos would be a mega-hit drama when they first aired it, I don't think they'd say yes (I remember the commercials before the pilot aired being comedic in nature). I'm so sick of them canceling shows premature (JFC, Deadwood, and Carnival as examples)with no explanation what so ever. I feel I deserve an explanation as I'm paying for it. And then in all their wisdom, they also have this thing where they will have 6 month - 18 month breaks between seasons. What's up with that? I cancelled HBO 2 weeks ago. I don't think Entourage will be enough to get me back....in JUNE '08!!!!!

    by zer0cool2k2

over "John from Cincinatti". and I've tried to watch "Tell Me you love Me", but it's just boring as Hell, even with the occasional nudity. Entourage's return is the only thing keeping me subscribed at this point (well, that along with Inside the NFL and the HBO HD movies). I was angry at Showtime for awhile for cancelling "Dead Like ME", but Patinkin would have inevitably walked away from it anyway. (And what's up with those DLM movies?). They've won me back with WEEDS, Californication, and Dexter though. And The Tudors wasn't bad either.

    JFC

    by zoefan

I don't understand what people's problem with JFC is. It basicly has the cast from Deadwood, the dialog is still solid and it has a great storyline. Saying it sucks doesn't explain anything. Why does it suck?

I loved everything about this show, I can't believe they would screw it like this, cut the series short then let the movies die off before they even get started. By they I include Milch. JFC was intriguing but I would have happily swapped every hour of it for another minute of Deadwood.

This is probably the third Coax article we've had with someone from the show saying "Oops, you know that Deadwood movie stuff we were talking about to mollify the rioting hordes? Yeah, we may not be able to do those after all." It's not difficult to figure out that the suits are just blowing smoke up your ass when they make a suggestion like this. 3rd Season off track

    by jbs0209

    This is not unexpected.
We all knew that it was over.
It is just a shame that it had to end. Especially with the let down that the 3rd season was. I don't understand those complaining about lack of closure. There was no cliff hanger at the end, merely a let down ending.
The problem was that Milch writes as he goes. And in season 3 he never figured out where he was going. Hearst was such a force that Al basically coward in his office trying to figure out how to stop the unstoppable. This left our heroes very impotent.
Season 1 & 2 were the best thing to happen to TV in a long time, better even than The Wire (although The Wire is great for 4 seasons now).
It would have been nice to have the movies and end Deadwood on an upbeat, but sadly not to be.

Fuck HBO, sure. But fuck Milch? Why?

    by half vader

Do you really think he should have sat twiddling his thumbs for years hoping HBO would give the go-ahead? WHy shouldn't he move on to other shows? That's what he does right? Create shows? Did I miss something where he publicly disowned Deadwood? Or is evrybody reading in because they think he lost interest with season three and therefore "mustn't" be interested in it anymore?

I've only seen S1 & 2, but it sure sounds like speculation about Milch. Especially from you Penetron. HBO are absolutely a bunch of areseholes though, I'm definitely not contesting that.

"3rd Season off track"? A "let down"?Hmmm, I really don't agree with you there. Especially when you consider that a majority of the season was laying the groundwork for the events scheduled to take place in the intended 4th and final season. (Fire and all.)And I think our heroes (Al, Bullock, etc.) may have only appeared "impotent" because they could not handle the threat of Hearst on their own. However, that's not to conclude that they were (cue the much discussed all-out gunfight/war). It took the efforts of the entire town to stand up to Hearst. And despite his purchase of Alma's claim, they countered him at every step. In the end, he may have thought himself victorious. But the final exchange with Bullock showed that they were still holding fast.I held out hope for the two concluding movies. But thanks to HBO, I've learned my lesson.

    W. Earl Brown (aka Dan Dority) speaks...

    by mr. nice gaius

http://tinyurl.com/yqptrl From his MySpace blog:"In press interviews for THE SEEKER: THE DARK IS RISING, Ian has been quoted as declaring DEADWOOD's demise. Sorry to say, it appears to be true. HBO had a five year lease on Melody Ranch. That lease is ending. The sets which have sat dormant, and around which JOHN FROM CINCINNATI was filmed, are being dismantled and leased props/costumes are being returned. It is over. That beautiful chestnut stud-horse has died, I will now stop beating it.I once swore to live my life without regrets. I did not want to come to the end, look back at what had ensued and feel sorrow for things I didn't do nor complete. Well... when I reach that Autumn, I will have now have at least one regret. However, I salve myself with the knowledge that I did everything I knew to do in order to keep it going. I was never quiet sure if I was Don Quixote attacking that windmill or Sisyphus rolling that rock - never the less I tried, but to no avail.I will now roll and cinch my whip, retrieve my saddle, and limp off down the trail into the waiting sunset. For those of you who cared enough to pay attention, thank you. Maybe, someday, I will again be a part of something that plays at that level and is that good.Speaking of - do any of you watch FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS on NBC? I just got turned on to the show via the boxset of season 1 -- it is awesome. I highly recommend it."And so it goes...

    What a coincidence!

    by _maltheus_

I hadn't read this until today, but I coincidentally canceled my subscription to HBO the day this was announced. Although not unrelated, I just hadn't gotten around to canceling it earlier, mostly in response to Deadwood, Carnivale and Rome. Big Love, while very good, was not enough for me to pony up $12 a month anymore. And The Wire has always been a DVD thing for me anyway (it's ok). So I'm glad my late cancellation ended up counting as a protest.
