Buffy's new squeeze

Published at:  Apr 13, 1999 1:56:49 PM CDT

Glen here...

...with a quick tidbit about the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series.

In short: she's going to get a new boyfriend now that Angel is getting his own series.
The part is being cast now. The character's name is Riley Finn, and he supposedly also
has a secret life. He's sort of the antithesis to Angel (the casting
notice describes him as "if Angel were Bruce Wayne, Riley would be Clark
Kent").

So there you have it. Thanks to my good friend KJB over at HREF="http://www.backstage-pass.com">Backstage Pass for sending this my
way...

    Buffy

    by eparabola

So, I'm assuming that most of the gang will be going to the same college together, minus Angel and Cordelia. This new guy, damn, I wish Hollywood would've asked me to portray Buffy's boyfriend. What happens in 5 years when she graduates and why is Cordelia going to be in the new Angel crap/show.
Actually, I have little to say. I just wanted to be the first person to post a message about this article.

    Buffy next season

    by jayseaver

Well, I'll be glad to see Angel off the show - a wee bit too much angst for my liking. Since everyone's graduating, they could probably completely level the high school (which, symbolically, might be a good idea) during the season finale.

What I'm hoping for is Buffy & Willow as roommates, Oz at another school nearby and Xander...probably not in college. Giles gets a new job at B & W's school.

I for one can't wait For the Angel series. With Joss Whedon at the helm Im sure it will be good and now that Deep Space Nine is ending I need a replacement. it looks like Angel might just be the replacment I've been seeking.
I mean no way will Voyager do the trick! As for Buffy's new boyfriend...well all the characters on Buffy have been pretty cool so far so I have faith in thier writing abilities.

    A new boyfriend? AAAAARGH!

    by thunderball

She doesn't need a new boyfriend. Just get her to shack up with Willow!! Just kidding there! :)
Why can't Xander just step up to plate and be the Buffmeister's main squeeze? He's certainly earned the spot. The last thing the show needs is another new character (even with Angel and Cordelia departing). I miss the first season click the original trio had - though I still love the show!

    Doubts

    by not todd

I have my doubts about this new guy too. Maybe he'll end up being another one-episode boyfriend. There is a college in Sunnydale, remember. I think it was called Crestwood.

    boyfriends

    by tarheel

First of all Xander is totally not mature enough to be Buffy's dude. Second, Buffy will never have a sucessful relationship, too much to juggle, too much baggage. The guy will either be in on the secret and in the way or a potential casualty (Lois Lane syndrome), or he won't know her secret and always be an outsider(like poor Scott and poor whats his face from "Never Kill a Boy on the First Date"). Third, whatever happened to the rumour about Jamie Kennedy (the video geek from Scream 1 and 2)getting a role on the show either as a vampire or boyfriend or both?

    Buffy characters

    by drath

I think Jamie Kennedy was up for the demon who helped Angel in "Becoming," which he didn't take. But if anyone deserves her own show, it's WILLOW! Think about it, she could curse Shannen Dougherty's charmed into the afterlife, turn Dawson into a frog, and while she tests her culinary frog-leg baking skills she could maybe teleport Rescue 77 over to UPN! What I'd like to see her do to Felicity isn't printable.
But with Buffy, I agree with everybody else that a new boyfriend is sort of a TV-crap-out after all this "my one true love" business with Angel. This guy is like Clark Kent to Angel's Bruce Wayne? Clark Kent is BORING next to Bruce Wayne! Unless they get somebody like Stephen Dorff to play him, I think I'd rather see Buffy take a breather from romance. Oh, and I DO NOT THINK that Xander has earned anything from Buffy except a good punch to the jaw. He's such a weasel about her love life-I'm sick of him. Willow needs to be freed from his character forever. Like I said, give her the new show!

I'd give it the benefit of the doubt

    by backstagepass

I've been pleasantly surprised by Buffy over the years (I remember the groan that I let out when I got the first press release about the series, now it's one I try not to miss).
Imagine if this guy is more like a "Captain Kronos" type, Mr Hero dude instead of "angst ridden making-up-for-his-sorry-existence". Could be interesting. I'll give it a shot. If it doesn't click, he can always take a stray demon blast to the chest. :)

    Another boyfriend?

    by barrymore

    Buffy don't need no boyfriend.
Why can't she hangout with the others and not have a boyfriend? It would be nice to get it back to being Buffy-Willow-Xander with a little Oz and Giles thrown in.
I second JaySeaver's thoughts on what next season should be like--right on, dude!
    That is all.
P.S. This is the worst season to have DS9 go off the air! DS9 is finally a great show!

    Buffy: The College Years.

    by vincent d.

Okay hold on, they're splitting up Angel to his own show? Wow, I miss one episode and next thing you know... Anyways, that's good, the show needs a little shaking. This new boyfriend had better be good though, the show would be nothing without the great character development and interaction. I think the best episode so far has to be the one where Xander is solo against the Zombies. Stopping armegeddon was just a sub-plot, and it worked beautifully! Although, I was fairly impressed by the Valentine's day episode, also featuring Xander and his little love spell. As long as they don't forget that the show is so much better when it's about teenagers and the crap they go through (with some supernatural exageration, of course) I'm sure Buffy will turn out great. The Angel show, I don't know. Could get a little too Gothy and Tragic for anyone to stomach. Back to the boyfriend, I think it would be great to see the boyfriend be an engineering student or something that invents vampire-killing devices, Buffy's already wasted every occult mythology that exists, it could be time to branch out... (As long as they don't touch shamanism I'll be okay.)

    Xander

    by jonpaul13

Ok, first, let me say that I prefer the show the way it is, with all the characters there--no one going off on their own (even Angel). But, change happens, and if the writers are good, the story is even better. The addition of Ms. Calendar, Oz, and Amy have all added to the quality of the stories. I have faith (no pun intended) that any new addition will be just as good.

However, if we are to have spin-offs, then I feel that only one character really deserves this--Xander. The best episodes of the series are the ones focusing on him ("The Pack", "Bothered, Bewitched, and Bewildered", and "The Zeppo"). As was pointed out in "The Zeppo," he is the only one without special abilities. Yet he is always there, trying his best to help his friends. He is the truest hero of the group. With the experience he has, plus the training he remembers from his Halloween character, Xander would be a natural for an ongoing series. Everyone is worried that the Angel series will be too dark. Too much angst. Well, a Xander series would have the same basic feel as the Buffy series. An extra bonus is that Nicholas Brendon is a much better actor than David Boreanaz.

Well, that's my 2 cents worth. Don't expect it to happen, and as I said at the beginning, I prefer them all together anyway.

    The new "man" in town...

    by rebel scum

So, this new boyfriend of Buffy's has a secret life, eh? I wonder if it involves FIGHTING EVIL perchance? Sounds remarkably similiar to a story I've been writing (since last year) that involves Buffy meeting a "kindred spirit". Should be interesting whatever Mr.Whedon conjures up.

  • Angelus, the darker half of Angel, is ten times more interesting. Angel, the wimp, is just plain dull. I would find myself rolling my eyes at the lovey-dovey eps or where Angel would have his brow is a permanent contortion. By the way, CLARK KENT is not boring. He'll be a good contrast to the other characters who have sort of "grown up" and become more jaded. I hope Cordy stops tanning, or she's going to look like Melissa Rivers soon. Spike and Dru are the ones who need their own spinoff. Spike is delicious....

    Bring back Spikester

    by porkchop express

I agree bring back Spike and Dru or give them the new show. They were the best of all the opposing teams to date, although the Mayor is a hoot as well. Give Cordy half a brain, keep her out of the tanning booths and keep her around to keep Xander on his toes. Keep Buffy single, she pulls off that lonely, wanting, slayer bit just fine.

    Can anybody tell me...

    by sandy

...what series are you up to in the states now? Here in Australia, we've just seen Buffy send back the Decathla...whatever it is...by (apparently) killing Angel just as his soul was restored by Willow in her hospital bed and Buffy has gone AWOL. *Please* don't tell me what's going to happen, I just want to know how far behind we are. Thanx........Sandy

It seems that you're exactly one season behind us down there... Also, does anyone know when this new Angel series will be premiering? Will the WB turn Teusday into the All-Buffy night? I mean, I'm sure that they'll run it after Buffy for a little while, that's a great debut time-slot, but it could become too much. (Like 90210 and Melrose Place with an occult make-over...)

    Angel series

    by pope buck 1

It seemed to me I heard they were considering putting "Angel" on Wednesdays as a partner to "Charmed." Just like those network bozos, to make us watch them TWO nights a week.

    Spike And Druscilla on Angel

    by drath

Think about that, Spike and Dru were both sired by Angelus! If Angel does traveling while Buffy is stuck in one place, he's sure to run into these two a lot. And he should since there's a good connection between them. But as for Buffy, CLARK KENT is STILL boring. Unless they mean this new character will have the whole "Last son of Krypton" kind of history, I can't say I like the comparison. Clark Kent on his own is a boyscout. Sure, it is a change of pace from the rouges and bad-guy/girls of Spike, Faith, Luck, Druscilla. But Wesley Whendon-Price is a boyscout, so they better put more thought into this new character.(PS, I'm sure they will, this show has a good track record and this was just a simple description of the new guy).
