i misread the headline and thought it said

"new akira based anime us bound"

and got real excited... because i always thought an animated series that followed the story of the manga very closely would be AMAZING.

    I actually love Anime titles...

    by strokerx

they're fun!! And this isnt even really Anime if you ask me.
The character designs are Otomo but the 3d animation is stiff and distracting.
Someone please perfect this technique first...it looks ok from afar..but up close..not so good.
Definitely about bikers...but not nearly the same feel as Akira.

polyh3dron had it right. Bandai Visual is releasing some of the most overpriced shit in the history of the domestic anime scene. They basically just cater to the most hardcore dipshits out there. Don't give those price gouging fuckers even one cent of your hard-earned money!

    by potsmokinalien

and just spend the rest of his life making akira related stuff. a miniseries that translated the comic to an animated format would be amazing. AKIRA the movie is trippy and cool but the comic is one of the greatest stories i've experienced in any medium. i was actually disappointed when i saw the movie for the first time, after reading the books.

    by atomic_robo_kid

is a one-trick pony. it's true that nothing he's done can touch akira, the manga or the film. but other things he's done, such as domu, mother sarah, roujin-z, and memories - those are great comics and animations in my opinion.

i'm not familiar with this source material but it sounds interesting.

and i own steamboy but haven't watched it yet because i'm afraid. haha.

    AKIRA Hollywood Remake

Make such a great movie. Obviously Akira would too but I just don't don't see a studio fronting the cash to make something so ambitious and violent. But Domu could be sold as Jap Horror meet fucking Jedi!

    mode_7... SPOILERS everybody else

    by telf

Obviously there are different interpretations. But the one that sits best with me is ariticulated quite well on wiki.If you remember there is some talk of parallel universes and such by the Espers (wee psychic trio). bear that iin mind when reading this extract from Wiki:"Tetsuo and Kaneda fight again. Soon finding Tetsuo targeted in his gunsight, Kaneda hesitates when seeing Tetsuo's body swell into a huge protoplasmic mutation that almost fills the stadium. Tetsuo's gruesome form manages to accidentally kill Kaori, and attempts to kill Kaneda, who shoots his way out with the laser cannon.

Suddenly, the canisters shatter and Akira appears, triggering another explosion. Kiyoko touches the Colonel, instantly teleporting him to the safety of a tunnel far from the stadium. The explosive energy sphere starts to absorb Tetsuo, who pleads for Kaneda's help. Kaneda allows himself to be recaptured by Tetsuo, venturing inside the energy sphere with him. In an effort to save Kaneda, the Espers decide to enter as well, intending to use their combined psychic powers to free him. Inside, Kaneda sees the memories of Tetsuo and the Espers. The Espers tell him that Akira will be sending Tetsuo "away" (to an undisclosed destination). Kaneda then seems to be ejected from the inside of Akira's onslaught, awakening outside the explosion upon hearing Kei's voice calling his name, perhaps telepathically communicated by the Espers.

Neo-Tokyo is destroyed by the violently expanding sphere; streets are gutted and flooded by the event. Kaneda survives, as do Kei, Kaisuke, and the Colonel. The former three meet up at the ruins of the Olympic Stadium, wondering if Tetsuo is truly dead. They then ride their bikes across a bridge into the ruined city.

Somewhere, a stylized "big bang" breaches the cosmic darkness and Tetsuo's voice is heard to say, "I am Tetsuo." This may imply that Tetsuo is now a god-like entity residing in his own universe, or that he has become another universe entirely."Hope that helps mate. God, I love Akira.

An AKIRA Live Actioner COULD Be AMAZING

    by laserpants

    If done by someone like:
    1) Alfonso Quaron
    2) Park Chan Wook
    3) Benecio Del Toro
    and maybe
    4) David Fincher (maybe)
Either that or the Ghosts of Kurosawa and Kubrick in an astral team up sure to rock the very foundations of reality itself!

Btw, AKIRA Is The Greatest Animated Movie EVAR

    by laserpants

Don't even try to deny it. It still holds up, and, if anything, has gotten better with age. The animation is stunning, the story is brilliant, funny, and terrifying, and, quite frankly, its never been equaled. Name one narrative animated that even comes close that isn't Japanese. (btw something like Fantasia isn't a "narrative.") I'd call Princess Mononoke a close second, but still second.

Bandai Visual's prices suck though. That company's gonna go belly-up before we know it.

    AKIRA

    by quamb

Should NEVER be made into a live action. No matter what director. You'd need absolute brilliance and then some from every aspect (direction, script, score, cinematography etc) for it to even come close to the manga and anime -- otherwise it'd just be a waste of time.

    i agree

    by nekomex

anime is a true-valid media like a live action movie, some people kind of think that some work its more important because they transformit to live-action.
there are news about the dragon ball z movie ,James Wong is going to direct it , im not by far a fan of dragon ball, but can you think of the pice of crap this movie will be made by 20th Century Fox?
just by the fact of the millions of fans that will be upset by the casting .

i totally agree. i saw akira for the first time when i was maybe eleven years old - i've watched it so many times since then, that the original dubbing (regardless of some convoluted dialogue and weird translations towards the end) is engrained in my mind. when i got the 2001 dvd release, some of the voices just sounded so off to me.

and some of the cursing seemed really forced and unnecessary. it was also jarring to see tetsuo's first big hallucination in dead silence - which i understand is how it was originally - but those sound effects and tidbits made it for me as a kid. i can see now though how haunting it is in dead silence.

it seems like the translation is better in some parts in the 2001 release. but it just isn't what i grew up with, and the character's voices don't nuance their personalities like in the old streamline version.

    The 2001 Akira dub...

    by nexus-6

Is vastly superior to the old one. I grew up with the old one too, but quite a few voices on it are the same as the old '80's Ninja Turtles cartoon, and that's pretty distracting. The translation is also a lot better in the '01 version. At the same time, I see where you're coming from. The old dub SHOULD be included for those who prefer it. Who knows if Pioneer owns the rights to it or not though.
