AICN Games: Monki's New and Improved Weekly Wrap-Up! Simpsons Giveaway! Halo 3! Pink Controllers!

Published at:  Oct 01, 2007 2:46:07 AM CDT

Greetings humans, Monki here with an updated batch of gaming news for you!

First things first, my contest to win a Steve Wiebe autographed Wii wrapped this past weekend and I'm digging through the entries to pick out a winner. We got some fantastic stuff!

Second of all, I'm working with the format of my column, so over the next couple of weeks you may see a bit of new stuff, some vanishing old stuff, and some reworked stuff. Stick with it, just ride it out...we'll all be okay.

Have you beaten Halo 3 yet? I mean come on! It's been almost a week since release! Alright, I hope you can tear yourself away from your 360 to make it through the column. Here we go!

Cool Giveaway of the Week!

I got a cool email a few days ago...it seems the team behind the upcoming Simpsons video game is sending out some exclusive posters to a few websites, lucky us, we're one of them.

You'll find other posters scattered to other sites, but this is ours, the two-headed monster that is PATTY AND SELMA!

Now here's the cool part...I've got 100 of these guys to give away to our readers. All you have to do is drop me an email with your name and address to monki@aintitcool.com with the subject "Simpsons Poster Giveaway" and it's yours. That simple. Feel free to include any kind words for yours truly as well.

In addition to the giveaway I have a few more details for the Simpsons game, if you sign up for the Simpson's Game newsletter over at EA's site, you get four exclusive videos from the game. You can check that out here. I also got this note:

HOMERBALL: Pre-order The Simpsons Game at select retailers and receive your very own Homerball. Based on Homer's special in-game powers, Homerball is Homer's dream come true; turning into a giant, rolling, ball that can eat and eat and eat without ever getting full. As an added bonus, Homerball can smash walls, burst over ramps, and knock back enemies. Behold the ball!

Pretty sweet... I can imagine a lot of these in quite a few offices...

For more info on the game, check out www.ea.com/simpsons.

Game News of the Week!

Jack Thompson is at it again...This time he is once again using his son in "sting" operations targeting retailers selling Halo 3 (an "M" rated game) to minors.

This isn't the first time that Wacky Jack has used his son as bait, he did it just after Bioshock hit the streets and had the same result.

I'm not too concerned with this loon though as the clock is ticking on his trial to revoke his license to practice law. Most recently he actually sent gay porn to the judge to try to smear his opposing attorney in the case. Of course, it has been said many times before...but maybe having Thompson as the anti-video game crusader isn't a terrible thing? I mean, would you rather have someone leading the charge against gaming that is actually competent and a real threat? Or would you rather be up against this crazy.

Is anyone else excited about Guitar Hero 3 and Rock Band? I somehow know I'm going to end up with like seven guitars, two drum kids, a microphone and a dance-pad for some reason by Christmas. Apparently it was Guitar Hero day in New York City this past week. From a release I received:

Santa Monica, CA - September 26, 2007 -- Activision, Inc., publisher of the wildly popular Guitar Hero franchise and the City of New York are proud to proclaim September 26, 2007 "Guitar Hero Day" in New York City. Fans are ready to rock the streets of Manhattan as thousands are expected to gather in celebration of the day, with guitar controllers in hand. This proclamation is one of many Guitar Hero events taking place in New York City this week, heading into the launch of the highly anticipated Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock.

The game was also included in Ziff Davis' Hot Five Press Event on Tuesday, September 25 at Splashlight Studios. The press only event featured the five hottest products of the coming year. For the first time, U.S. fans have the opportunity to play Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock at the DigitalLife Conference taking place at Javits Center, September 27-30.

No mention of "NEW YORK CITY GOING TO 11!" Thank god.

Seriously though, Guitar Hero 3 or Rock Band? Personally I'm leaning a bit towards Rock Band at the moment. The drum kit has got me very very interested in that one. Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock hits on October 27th and Rock Band hits on November 23rd. Which will you choose?

Oh, and what is it with EA naming their games with these awesomely generic titles? Rock Band...skate...I can't wait to play EA's upcoming "Fighting Game" and follow that up with "Racing Game," but really we are all holding out for "Role-Playing Game Part 2!"

Halo has broken the single-day record for a media release...OF ANY KIND. From XBox.com:

September 26, 2007 - Microsoft today announced that Halo 3 has officially become the biggest entertainment launch in history, garnering an estimated $170 million in sales in the United States alone in the first 24 hours. The Xbox 360 title beat previous records set by blockbuster theatrical releases like Spider-Man 3 and novels such as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Look me in the face and tell me video games aren't one of the most important aspects of pop culture. $170,000,000. Wow.

Let me tell you a little horror story that happened to me this past week. The weekend before Halo 3 hit, my XBox 360 red-ringed on me. I'd had it since February of 2006...and it finally died on me just days before the most insane launch of all time. I guess karma finally caught up with me after I murdered all those hookers.

Long story short, my 360 was sent off in it's coffin...I cried...then I begged friends for access to a 360 and now I am forever in debt to Burnie from Red Vs. Blue as he loaned me his kids' 360...that's right...I took a 360 away from someone's kids to play Halo 3...I'm an evil evil man.

Does anyone else remember how badass Geometry Wars was when the 360 first launched? It provided an example of just what the XBox Live Marketplace was capable of and is still to this day one of my favorite XBLA games.

A new version of it is hitting pretty soon for the Wii and DS and the guys behind the game have thrown together perhaps the coolest website for it ever.

http://www.gwgcats.com/ is a cross between Geometry Wars and the infamous LOLCats. Genius.

You can submit your own Geometry Wars-themed LOLCats on their website as well. Hooray for internet fads!! Hip! Hip! LOLZ!! Hip! Hip! LOLZ!!!

Sometimes the internet makes me happy...especially when a company has a blog dedicated to a game I'm looking forward to.

Over at Capcom Digital they have constantly updating information on the remake of Super Street Fighter 2.

Basically Capcom has hired a company to completely re-draw Super Street Fighter 2 (the one where Cammy, Fei Long, DeeJay and T. Hawk were introduced) frame-by-frame. The actual mechanics of the game will not be affected whatsoever, but every single blocky sprite has been replaced with insanely detailed graphics.

Over there now you can see some images from Cammy and M. Bison that they just put up. I'm anxious as hell to pick this one up when it hits marketplace.

Pretty Images of the Week!

I've been receiving information and videos for the new Aqua Teen Hunger Force Zombie Ninja Pro-Am for a while now, and I still have no idea what the hell this game is going to be about or how it is going to be played. That being said, I'm looking forward to it. Check out this cutscene I received from the game. SANDWICH BATTLE!

What the hell is going on??

Speaking of "What the hell is going on?" check out this new trailer for Dementium: The Ward coming out for the DS...

This kind of reminds me of those early Activision trailers where Phil Hartman would yell at the camera...I can't wait to play this one in a hot tub full of women! Can you?

To finish off I have another real-people-in-game-trailer trailer for you. This one is for Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, coming for the DS and Wii. Sonic and Mario in one game together...still a shocker.

Now go back and watch that again...did you see a sensor bar in their setup? Or even a Wii for that matter? I wonder if this game comes with a gift certificate to Ikea!

Games You Must Buy of the Week!

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (Available 10/1 for the DS)

When was the last time a Zelda title wasn't good? Come on, you know you need to get this one...pump some life back into that DS of yours!! This actually has some multiplayer stuff in it as well...that's pretty sweet.

Project Gotham Racing 4 (Available 10/2 for XBox 360)

Flatout: Ultimate Carnage (Available 10/2 for 360)

Two racing games here for the 360 both with completely different styles. PGR looks insanely beautiful...some of the most realistic graphics to hit the 360 yet and Flatout is an incredibly fun smash-em-up type of racer complete with toss your driver out the front window mini-games. Both of these are excellent.

NBA Live 08 (Available 10/2 for PS3/360/Wii/PSP/PS2)

I've never been into basketball video games...I don't know why. People certainly do love them though, and NBA Live 08 is one of those "add a new control scheme and throw a new roster on it" release from EA...but people still love it, so I offer it up here!

Crash of the Titans (Available 10/2 for Wii/360/PS2/PSP/DS/GBA)

Does anyone else remember the "TUCK AND ROLL GRANDMA!" commercial from back in the day? If I remember correctly, Crash Bandicoot is racing a car against someone and for some reason the guy kicks his grandmother out all while yelling "tuck and roll Grandma!" What ever happened to those commercials? You know...the ones with elderly abuse?

Anyway, this is the new Crash Bandicoot game hitting just about every system except for the PS3...looks fun!

Pink Wireless XBox 360 Controller (Available 10/2)

Okay, this isn't a game...just roll with it. Still trying to convince your girlfriend to play the 360 with you? Why not pick up a copy of Viva Pinata and a pink 360 controller? That may help, right? Who am I kidding...gamers don't have girlfriends! Silly me!!

The Orange Box (Available 10/9 for PC/360 and 11/13 for PS3

This one comes out next week and a LOT of people have been looking forward to it. The videos I've seen of Team Fortress 2 (one of the THREE games included in this bad boy) look freakin' awesome. The stylized characters look fantastic. Not to mention the fact you get Half-Life 2: Episodes 1 AND 2 and Portal all in the same box...pretty sweet if you ask me.

Game I'm Playing Right Now!

Drawn to Life (Available now for DS)

Before you get started...OF COURSE I'M PLAYING HALO 3!! This is just a title that I picked up that has turned out to be a pretty sweet concept.

The gameplay itself is pretty simple...very basic running around and attacking monsters...but the really cool part about it is that you get to create your own hero. You actually draw your figure out and then get to play along with your creation. So, if you want to make a penis-monster that helps save this mystical town...feel free to. If you want to draw Guile or Ryu from Street Fighter...go ahead! It's a neat idea and I love any title that actually uses the DS's unique platform to it's fullest extent.

No, Halo 3 Does NOT Suck of the Week!

If you are on XBox Live...do me a favor. Open up your friends list...now then...how many of those people are playing Halo 3?

At 12:30am CST (Cool Standard Time) on launch day I had 25 friends online playing Halo 3. That is just silly.

Of course, you still have the occasional guy who won't stop playing Madden '08 and tells you that Halo 3 sucks.

This irks me. It irks me greatly.

"Why does Halo 3 suck?" You might ask back.

"Because you can't use a mouse and keyboard and all console shooters suck."

Great...another one of those guys. Here's the deal...just because you aren't good at a game doesn't mean it sucks. 80% of the time these kinds of people have played a game like Halo or Call of Duty and gotten their asses handed to them, so they ran back to their computers to get their first-person-shooter on.

I have issues with people who claim that shooter supremacy lies on computers. First of all, almost no two computers are alike. Every single PC is going to have a different configuration than another...a metallic snowflake. That being said, not every single game is going to run equally on every machine. Your Alienware PC with liquid nitrogen cooling is going to blow away your cousin's Gateway.

Every single PS3 is identical (save for hard drive space)...same goes for the 360 and Wii. You are a level playing ground with every single person out there. No one has a $90 mouse with crazy macros and nine different triggers. It's all about being equal.

Secondly, console shooters and PC shooters are entirely different. Just because you like one flavor more than the other doesn't automatically make the other suck. For the love of god, respect that people can enjoy things you might not like. If you tell me that Halo 3 sucks, I'll tell you that 1.5 MILLION people played the damn game online in the first 24 hours of launch. For every person that bitches about the game, there are tens of thousands of people who say it is awesome.

Halo represents damn near technical perfection in a console shooter. If you tell me you don't like it because you'd rather play Call of Duty 4 because it's more realistic...that's fine. I understand that some people don't like the bouncy gravity and no ability to run. That's fine. But don't tell me it sucks because you shoot Covenant aliens instead of Nazis or Terrorists. Look, I don't like salad, but I am cool with the fact that other people love it.

Just in general, people need to calm the fuck down. We should all be happy about the way that Halo 3 has taken the world by storm. Even if you aren't a fan of the game, the launch validates the culture that we have spawned. $170 million can't be brushed aside. This is a really great time to be a gamer...enjoy it instead of bitching about it.

The Final Minute with Monki!

Alright, I hope you kids like the new re-working of the column...it's a bit more meaty now for your chewing!

So, don't forget to drop me an email to get a free poster and send me kind words. I leave you today with a sad tale told to the tune of "Cats in the Cradle." Enjoy.

So sad...but I want to play the old-home shooter game. Freakin' tight. BIG PIMPIN'!!

I've got some more stuff coming up this week...a couple of interviews and I'm still waiting on a really hawt exclusive...you'll see. Until next time, enjoy your Halos and back up the tree I go!

    AHHH! AWESOME! PINK X-BOX CONTROLLERS!

    by midol girl

Yes! I'm so excited to hear the news! Now if only my X-Box would come back from the manufacturer before the controller release date. I got the "red ring of death" at the beginning of summer riiiight before I was about to beak from hard to expert on Guitar Hero 2, the red lights in the front lit-up and I knew I would be in for a long wait. They sent me a special box to mail it back to them in and now I'm wigging out for some game play---I haven't even been able to play HALO 3 yet UGGGHHH it's killing me! So mad. They told me though that I'd get some X-Box live action for free when I got it back and they are fixing it all for ziltch so I can't complain too much, but maybe, just maybe because I've been such a good patient little girl I'll get a complimentary pink controller? Haha I don't think so...ah well. Until then I'll just play my DS and sip Pinacoloda slush out of my holographic Halo 3 Slurpee cup and dream.

    by tough_times

I got the first Halo for my laptop (and yes its a Gateway) I am getting my pansy ass kicked on multiplayer. The best I've done was to get 3rd out of 16. So am I really a pansy, or am I being dogged by superPCs-with mad macros by losers who've played 24/7 since Halo was launched? I would just like to know.

Your'e "borrowing" some kid's Xbox 360? Shame, shame, shame. You could have at least asked AICN for one, since Harry gets all the free shit (swags)
from these sponsors for hyping their products.
    Loser.

Anyway who gives a shit about a SF2 remake, just have those assholes do the right thing by releasing the Marvel VS series on Xbox live arcade, It's that simple.

...3rd of 16 is like the top 15%, so I wouldn't worry about it. In my experience, there's no basis at all for Monki's assertions about un-level playing fields in PC games. All top-flight multiplayer shooters are heavily optimised so that anyone should be able to get a smooth framerate out of them, even if they have to run it with most of the graphical bells and whistles turned off (in that respect it's MORE of a level playing field than consoles - something akin to XBox 360 and original XBox owners being able to play the same game on the same servers together, and let's not forget that good dedicated servers remove the problem of one person's machine and internet connection struggling to run the server as well as play), and most top players, to the best of my knowledge, don't use fancy mice and lots of macros, just dedication and deep knowledge of the game, inside and out. This includes working out exploits of the game engine, true enough, but they'll happen on any system.

    Halo 3 on XBox LIVE

    by gilest

...was so disappointed. Not that the game sucks, 'cause it doesn't, but online co-op lagged like a bastard. All the deathmatch games were fine, but we couldn't get our co-op on for love nor money. Not down to crap bandwidth either, we've all got 20MB. Anyone else in the UK have the same problem?

    Regarding Halo sucks people...

    by raw_bean

...it's much simpler than you think, Monki. It's just the usual backlash to something being successful. Anything that's held in high regard by a great many people is going to be derided by some, just so they can feel superior to the masses who've been 'duped' into liking something they personally don't. You must have seen it a thousand times before, just look in any talkback of a popular film here on AICN, like 300 for example. Personally, I'm just indifferent; I'm a die-hard mouse enthusiast for shooters - the far greater range of movement than an analogue stick is much more precise, simply because the ratio of how far you move it to achieve a given degree change of aim is much more, so you can make much finer movements, as well as faster ones) and I was largely unimpressed by the original Halo when it made it to PC, but I'm not going to have a go at people for playing and enjoying Halo 3. I grew out of that kind of thing years ago.

...we all know girls (especially attractive ones) don't really play games, stop trying to fool us. ;^)More seriously though, you have my sympathies; my Windows installation went bang on the day of Half-Life 2's initial release (luckily a re-install fixed it so I didn't have to wait as long as you are), so I know what you're going through.

    zelda and Team Fortress 2

    by benway1

Team Fortress 2 is pure gold. Those who preordered the box via Steam got a chance to download the beta and how sweet that whole thing is. Lots of the spirit from the videos (steampowered.com) is carried into the final game which made me and some friends smile throughout some sleepless nights over the last week, especially some of the timeless taunts and animations work great.
Maps and Class system are totally sweet, some minor tweaks to the balancing still have to be done (spy is still too powerful imo) but all in all this game's a total blast with lots of tactical possibilities for competitive gaming and countless funny details.
    -----------------------
    Zelda

Finally! Been trying out the Japanese Version for a few days when it came out which is a pain in the ass if you can't read Kanji since there's pretty much text based story development and clues you have to work your way through, at least as far as i played. The stylus movement however worked totally flawless and felt completely natural after a few minutes, no moving the stylus off the screen nor Link not responding properly, best touch screen response so far in a DS Game. Athmosphere is almost the same as in WindWanker so those who liked it will instantly find their way into phantom hourglass. This will definately be one of the top 5 this handheld is gonna be remembered by.

Now now, the Halo hate SHOULD be discussed!

    by horseflesh

Me, I'm a Halo hater too. I tried it out for the first time on 3's release date and I couldn't get it back to the store soon enough.

It's not because it wasn't a mouse and keyboard game, it's not because "EVERYONE loves Halo so I shouldn't to be cool!", I - honest to fucking god - hated the game. I started it up, opened my mind, said "Okay let's have some fun with the next big hit." and then proceeded... to be completely unimpressed. Okay sure, it's the biggest hit EVAR, that doesn't automatically make it a 10/10. I'm not denying the things that make this game a hit but NO ONE will acknowledge the areas where this game misses and THAT is what bugs me, reviews that are COMPLETELY lacking in objectivity.

Anyone saying the campaign in this game is outstanding needs to take a look at some of the other games out there and objectively, LOGICALLY realize that the presentation is H3 is simply not up to par. Graphics, level design, cinematography, effects... one of these things should have BLOWN ME AWAY in the first half hour and that didn't happen. I'm easily impressed on a first view and this did nothing for me. Yes this game is a huge hit, yes millions and millions of people are currently throwing out their sliced bread thinking "Who needs this shit anymore?" BUT the hate that exists for this game in some cases has legitimate ground to stand on and if we're going to be objective and honest about games here or anywhere that needs to be brought into the light.

I actually saw a review that said "Sure this game is far from perfect" and then ended with 10/10. Pixel, what? If it's not perfect, it's not a 10/10. That may be your PERSONAL score, but it's not the game's score. I honestly envy everyone that is having the huge fun Halo 3 field day that they SHOULD be having but there are things I like in my FPS games that are *missing* from Halo 3. It will always be remembered as great, but it shouldn't be remembered as perfect.

    halo 3

    by affleckwasthebomb

Right I don't hate Halo, it's Ok, pretty good maybe. but what annoys me is the sheer amount of attention of love the game gets.
It's a standard FPS for christ sake. there is nothing special about it. So rather than people bitching because they can't play it they're probably bitching because there are probabyl hundreds of better FPS's out there on the PC that never get mentioned. Halo isn't a shit game it just doesn't deserve the attention it gets.
And the amount of console lovers out there that swear Halo is the best game ever yet have never played a decent PC FPS is huge, their the same ones that will jump on any PC gamer is dares to question the greatness of Halo.

I think there was a mention of that in the Simpsons comic strip, but they were a two headed monster puppet in a bedtime story Marge performed for Maggie. The strip is so cute- http://tinyurl.com/2pch45 As for pink...I have a pink (Watermelon) N64, a pink GBA and DS lite. Now, I wish that the pink PS2 was released in the US (It has been in Japan and Europe), though the only time it was available in the US was a contest open to children. Aaargh. Aquatarkusman, buy HALO 3 and have yourself a blast.

    by jdanielp

You can start fresh, without having played the first two. No previous knowledge is required. And anyone who has XBOX LIVE is just crazy not to pick up HALO 3. Multiplayer, along with Forge (for creative types), is a hoot. Oh, ...and keep in mind that the difficulty was adjusted for HALO 3, so that BOTH casual AND hardcore players can choose a difficulty that's right for them. Now, let's get this party started.

    by samlowry27

I suppose I was sort of one of those naysayers on Halo 2, but I was basing that only one the single player at the time, which I didn't enjoy as much as Halo. Halo 3 has won me completely over, however. It never misses a beat, and now that I finally have LIVE I can see what all the Halo fuss is really about, and I likes it.

Drawn to life is insanely addicting!

    by thegreenstyle

I got it. The character creator aspect is a riot. When I got the game for the first time, I drew a naked chick as my character, because, well, I always wanted to play a game where you play as a naked chick.

but my initial naked chick was rough, so I've redrawn her 3 times and tweaked her countlessly, adding shading and better proportions, all in the name of having the best damn naked chick possible. The game is tricking me into becoming a better artist!

oh, and her gun I drew to be G1 Megatron. take THAT Michael Bay Dennis!

Aquatarkusman, take the Xbox LIVE dip and..."Jump in."

Before long, you'll be doing the Lipton dip in multiplayer, otherwise known as tea baggin'. (lol) And also, Aquatarkusman, you can read the "story so far" to catch up. The booklet in with HALO 3 can be enough to get you caught up to speed.

    Halo not all that good...?

    by skull1138

I have played Halo 2 and was not that impressed, like everyone else I bought Halo 3 on release date in UK. Played it on co op with 1 mate, and occasionally a third, loved the first 7 levels of the game, but level 8 is awful, and nine is partly good and partly really long and annoyuing, mainly the car chase at the end, which is too long and complicated for that last bit of the game, you have already beaten it.

Gears is still number one for me as shooters go on X box.

Live is ok, but no one talks, whereas on Gears everyone talkes and discusses tactics, I joined ateam slayer game and only me and one other guy would ecven copmprehend talking, its a fucking team game for gods sake, or capyture the falg where no one talks, thats just pointless. also they totally ficked up the re spawn on co op it wont re start you because your hgiy is fighting, dugh thats the point you need to get abck in and help him. Especially the battleagainst Guilty spark, which is boring by the way, I started mistakenly fell off a ledge and was staring at nothing the whole time my mate killed it easily on heroic, I had to play it again just to see it, thats just fucking stupid.

Over all though, its a 8.5/10 for me, BIOSHOCK is a better 1 player game and Gears is better at both...so far in my opinion.

    360 Core question

the only real difference between core and pro is that the controllers are wired and if im correct, you dont get the hard drive. so you're actually fine and can do whatever you want. you aren't limited as far as which games you can play and how you can play them, you're simply limited with memory so either buy some memory cards or just get the hard drive and you're good to go.

Not to make Halo 3's sales achievements sound bad... but if it cost $60 for a copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, than Halo's $170 million wouldn't be as impressive.

Bought it played the single player, completed it 1st run through. Wasn't impressed at all, no sense of achieving anything in each of the missions (other than the 1st scarab takedown) the story was dull tbh. Went to fire up the multiplayer and BAMN red rings of fucking death. SO I now have to wait till My Box gets fixed till I play Multiplayer.

That and no price cut during the Tokyo game show, and Sony is looking to be in a sad situation. Sure, Rachet looks great and Tiny Little Planet looks revolutionary, but I think it too little too late. And I was a all Sony geek.....

    PC Vs Console, Round 2

    by topaz4206

Actually, the most important factor in PC FPS gaming is PING, not the quality of your rig. I've seen people with inferior rigs win at demanding games such as F.E.A.R., just because of low ping. And ping is an issue on consoles as well (whether you play on master servers or ad-hoc servers). And how do MACROS help you in FPS games? I can press 'G' to throw a grenade as fast as any button on a mouse can.In conclusion, if gamepad were the superior control scheme, you'd see people using them at CounterStrike tournaments.Don't get me wrong, I love Halo 3, but I also eagerly await its arrival on my PC in 2009.

.. how nobody talks about dropping 150 bucks on a special edition of a big game only to have the disc be too scratched to play because of "a packaging problem oversight"..... and having to wait until microsoft sends you a new one. so you go buy a "regular editon" so you don't feel left out of the fun... 170 million dollars later, microsoft still hasn't fixed the hardware problems. it's a wonder you guys still deal with that. i guess you're gluttons for punishment. is it really worth the three big games you play on that system? it wouldn't be for me. you guys talked so much shit about how expensive the ps3 was.. yet think of all of the money WASTED on a faulty box that requires expensive add ons to get the full enjoyment out of it. i know, i know, it's better, because you had a "choice." you weren't "forced" into a new format. all of that freedom would be great if the machine actually worked....

I read a quote about the Smashing Pumpkins once

    by industrykiller!

That Billy Corgan borrowed from everyone and gave nothing back. This also applies to Halo. Borrowed from everyone, and did it fairly well, but did absolutely nothing to advance the first person shooter as a genre. Look if you like it, bully for you, but quit it with the "revolutionary!" bullshit. I attended the Microsoft E3 conference and heard Peter Moore describe Halo as this generations Star Wars, which is just....it's just fucking ridiculous beyond words. Videogames don't interest me the way they used to, I find them to be somewhat stagnant, but when I see people busting out "The Next Star Wars" when talking about Halo I have to comment. I mean by whose estimation is the story even remotely compelling?? Its pretty shit. And this is coming from someone who neither is a Halo fanboy or someone who outwardly hates the franchise, it's just meh. It shoots right for the upper middle. It didnt change the way we looked at games or even the genre it resides in, unless of course you count sales into that equation. In which case you probably aren't the best authority of quality. It's popularity is largely manufactured to fool frat guys. It's really just another Madden.

    Halo & Revolutionary

    by stemjsim

H2 & 3 no The 1st Halo however did a few things that have effected FPS that came after. Only 2 weapons at a time and the rechargable shields were a 1st for console FPS if not all FPS at that time. The story was pretty damn enthralling as well. Add to that the control system and aiming overcame the traditional problems of using a controller for a FPS and you have quite a game. The 2nd and 3rd have been no improvements on what the 1st achieved with the exception of the multiplayer in the 2nd (Havent got online with the 3rd yet because my Box is shagged :() which was pretty much perfect. Updated playlists new ways of hooking up with people and the support of clans should have made the matchmaking system standard across Xbox Live as it was robust and incredibly easy to use.

The reason why Halo is "revolutionary", is because it brought true FPS's to consoles. It showed a plethora of other developers that it could be done and it was fun. The reason why it's so adored is because it brought the genre to the masses; you didn't need a huge hulking pc to have a decent FPS anymore. It's also fondly loved by people who enjoyed its multiplayer features; it might be weak in campaign when compared to the other FPS's but it's multiplayer is whats earned it the kudos it receives. As for being this generations Star Wars, debatable, but it has made a shit load of cash and it's officially now the biggest entertainment launch in history; yeh yeh, tickets to movies cost an 1/8th of a game, none the less it owns and deserves its accolades.Personally, i think it tells a decent little story and it's helped with some good VA from the likes of Ron Pearlman, Keith David and Terrence Stamp. You can slam it all you like for being "unoriginal", but then what is original these days? The book of ecclisasties says "Under the sun there is no new thing", that was 2300 years ago. Fuck all has changed since then.

All the best games coming out, Mercs 2, GTA, Burnout etc are multiformat.

With the exception of some MGS, Killzone, FF13 or whatever we're up to, Prototype & GT5 - it's kinda hard not to be impressed with what the PS3 has to offer.

    by industrykiller!

That the game is popular, ergo it is revolutionary. You make no mention of the content. The only thing it revolutionized was business models. Even in that respect you could argue that Goldeneye did that years before on the Nintendo 64. And before you say that game didn't become a Zeitgeist like Halo, remember that it was never a franchise but a stand alone game. But an incredibly popular game nontheless. FPS becoming a console staple was as inevitable as the sun coming up tomorrow. It's an accomplishment to be sure, but certainly not a feat deserving of revolutionary status. Look man if you like the game that's fine, I'm honestly not busting you, just cool it with the overpraise simply because it somehow came along at the right time witht he right marketing and become huge. And for the record it is not even remotely debatable whether its this generations Star Wars. In 10 years nobody will remember the mediocre story of Halo, hell I know guys who have played the games and can't repeat it outright. Saying it is is just nonsense.

    by industrykiller!

As someone on the outside with no bias whatsoever toward one system or the other, X-Box 360, breakable and buggy as it may be, has easily the most compelling software on the market. Although no system is any brilliant masterpiece to write home about thus far. Including the Wii, which, at least until Mario comes out, is closer to a novelty for the huddled masses than a rich gaming experience.

I think he's referring to what each system has out of the box. PS3 has Wifi and bluray out of the box. If you want the 360 to do the same things it's $270 in add-ons right there. Even more if you want to count the rechargable controllers.
