Why did you make Naomi Watts cry?!? What kind of FUNNY GAMES are you playing?

Published at:  Oct 01, 2007 1:48:05 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here playing a little bit of catch up. Moriarty sent me the link to the good folks at Cinematical where they posted an exclusive poster for the new Michael Haneke (CACHE) film, FUNNY GAMES, starring Naomi Watts, Tim Roth and Michael Pitt. It's a suspense thriller type deal about a family being held captive in their home by a pair of young psychotics.

This is a couple days old, so please forgive the tardiness, but with a cast like that in front of the camera and a director as interesting as Haneke behind the camera I figured it'd be good to show ya' the poster in case you missed it.

The poster itself isn't too amazing, but if you're going to do a big head poster, I guess having a crying Naomi Watts isn't the worst you could end up with...

ACTUALLY, IT'S A REALLY KICK ASS POSTER...

    by ninjatracksuit

I mean, sorry it doesn't have a big gay robot with flames on it's dick cradling some over airbrushed flavor-of-the-month while faux lens flare blazes all over the place...Anyways, the imagery and the sparse typography are the Queen's tits - now, I make no judgement on the actual film (I've yet to see), but the person(s) responsible for the poster did a bang up job. That is all.

i don't get it why haneke would make a remake of his own film. maybe... maybe he's trying something different now. but i wouldn't be the least bit surprised if he's just selling out. (at least it gives us austrians some time until we have to watch another "new" incredibly boring haneke-film)

And if the film's even half as good as the original, we'll be in for something special. I don't really mind Haneke remaking his own film. Hitchcock did it. Turned out okay. Up next, The Piano Teacher with Meryll Streep. Ewwwww....

    by broosethescharuk

...looks like something you would see on the cover of a Criterion dvd release, as opposed to the movie poster equivalent of shaking a ring of colorful keys in a baby's face to get its attention, which is generally what the "art" of the movie poster has been reduced to. Hope it's not a repeat of The Vanishing/The Vanishing experience, which was like a text book example of how Europeans and Americans would film the same script (even though both were made by the same guy, as pointed out above by tonagan), and -- I'm sorry to disagree, tonagan -- featured possibly Jeff Bridges' worst performance ever, as cheaply mannered and ill-conceived as it was (and he's a fav of mine).

the 'point' of remaking this (spoilage)

    by potsmokinalien

for those that are not familiar with the french movie-- it is a movie about a home invasion yes, but periodically the invaders make comments basically saying they are 'working' for the viewing audience and that none of this would be happening to the family if the audience wasn't watching. making a point about why an audience would see a movie that is advertised as being so horribly brutal, etc. my guess is that haneke could not resist the irony of remaking a movie with that point, shot for shot, but in a different language. and if that is the case that is pretty awesome--- the opposite of selling out if you ask me, or if you gotta call it selling out at least a subversive way to do so.

    It's a great poster

    by red_weed

Potsmokin alien, i believe it's an austrian film, not frenchm although he has of course made french language films. I also heard that one of the reasons he was remaking this was because the american studio wanted to remake it and he refused unless he directed it. I think he's just trying to protect his film, which is amazing and doesn't need to be remade at all but if it HAS to be, he's going to do it and it's going to be shot for shot exactly the same as the last one. It's ironic, especially how it's a sort of critique of all these kinds of violent horror and torture films that seem to be so popular at the moment. I think it would be good for peple to see this and make them rethink why they go and watch these movies and what it means to be an audience member in those kinds of films. Of course alot of the people that do go see those films probably wouldn't understand that and just think it's boring or stupid or didn't make sense or have a plot. But eh, you get that.

    postmodernity and the "remake"

    by duanejones

made you look/sick. i disagree that _cache_ was overrated, but surely we all agree that _the piano teacher_ and _time of the wolf_ were brilliant, don't we? we should. esp. _time_, one of the greatest "end of the world" films of recent times. yeah, it's "boring," insofar as it doesn't have cgi explosions to cover up an absence of truly compelling narrative. like, e.g., the first _funny games_. why would the very talented herr haneke remake it, except to get the, uh, cache(t) of being all po-mo and shizz for building out a simulacrum, shot-for-shot, with a bigger box office for the journey. sluzier is an example, van sant's _psycho_ another, equally shot-for-shot derivative. jesus. what happens when we run out things to remake? RE-remake them? meantime, think john zorn will do the soundtrack again? yeah, me neither...

the original Funny Games is bad. It wasn't very suspenseful, and the crap with the rewinding is just awful. This can't be worse, but that's not saying much. I just rented this film from Netflix last week, and I was highly disapointed. Cache, which is his only other film I've seen, is much better.

Funny Games is not a good film. I don't need a director to tell me that violence is bad blah blah blah. That's why I watch films instead of hurting people or watching real violence. Because its fake, and I'm not hurting anyone by watching it. And its not suspenseful, and after the son dies, the movie goes to hell, and it was barely good at that point. So maybe you are a terrible judge of quality for liking this.

And by the way, thanks for singling me out. No one has done that to any of my posts before. I feel honored, no matter how wrong your thoughts are.
