Why did you make Naomi Watts cry?!? What kind of FUNNY GAMES are you playing?
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here playing a little bit of catch up. Moriarty sent me the link to the good folks at Cinematical where they posted an exclusive poster for the new Michael Haneke (CACHE) film, FUNNY GAMES, starring Naomi Watts, Tim Roth and Michael Pitt. It's a suspense thriller type deal about a family being held captive in their home by a pair of young psychotics.
This is a couple days old, so please forgive the tardiness, but with a cast like that in front of the camera and a director as interesting as Haneke behind the camera I figured it'd be good to show ya' the poster in case you missed it.
The poster itself isn't too amazing, but if you're going to do a big head poster, I guess having a crying Naomi Watts isn't the worst you could end up with...

yeah!!
-
Funny games is one of my all time favorite films and I can finally show it to my friends on the big screen, yes in english, but it's pretty much shot for shot the same right?
-
now sleep.
-
I mean, sorry it doesn't have a big gay robot with flames on it's dick cradling some over airbrushed flavor-of-the-month while faux lens flare blazes all over the place...Anyways, the imagery and the sparse typography are the Queen's tits - now, I make no judgement on the actual film (I've yet to see), but the person(s) responsible for the poster did a bang up job. That is all.
-
Just like me, haha
-
Really dig the poster.
-
Oh whatever, everything rips off everything else. Sounds good.
-
And Watts is the hottest
-
I didn´t expect this kind of thing from Haneke.
-
...even for a "head shot." Sparse, effective and you know somethin' fucking terrible just went down to make this poor woman look like shit. I couldn't think of a better poster to convey this film (which is incredible).
-
Strong image, bold text. Really envokes a kind of seventies nostalgia.
-
Dunno if I should watch the original or wait for the remake.
-
...and that's no bad thing. Sure beats the shit out of the old photoshop floating heads, that's for sure.
-
i don't get it why haneke would make a remake of his own film. maybe... maybe he's trying something different now. but i wouldn't be the least bit surprised if he's just selling out. (at least it gives us austrians some time until we have to watch another "new" incredibly boring haneke-film)
-
Flames on Naomi Watts?
-
And if the film's even half as good as the original, we'll be in for something special. I don't really mind Haneke remaking his own film. Hitchcock did it. Turned out okay. Up next, The Piano Teacher with Meryll Streep. Ewwwww....
-
That was the VERY thing that immediately came to mind, this has a very European feel. This is the best damn poster I've seen all year, by far.
-
Boy was that a screwup (though Jeff Bridges was okay...)
-
What a pretentious and boring movie that was….hey look as the artistic director chops off the chickens head……all in the name of ART…..and lets see how long we can keep the camera focused on the house with nothing happening…think things are getting a bit boring in the film, lets show some gratuitous arterial spray to liven things up
-
of a pointless remake. Anyone want to bet that the poster is better than the film
-
but Quint, mate, that's a great fucking poster.
-
Just wait for the media to blame it for every home invasion that occurs after it's released.
-
...looks like something you would see on the cover of a Criterion dvd release, as opposed to the movie poster equivalent of shaking a ring of colorful keys in a baby's face to get its attention, which is generally what the "art" of the movie poster has been reduced to. Hope it's not a repeat of The Vanishing/The Vanishing experience, which was like a text book example of how Europeans and Americans would film the same script (even though both were made by the same guy, as pointed out above by tonagan), and -- I'm sorry to disagree, tonagan -- featured possibly Jeff Bridges' worst performance ever, as cheaply mannered and ill-conceived as it was (and he's a fav of mine).
-
Go watch 21 Grams. Jesus Christ...
-
for those that are not familiar with the french movie-- it is a movie about a home invasion yes, but periodically the invaders make comments basically saying they are 'working' for the viewing audience and that none of this would be happening to the family if the audience wasn't watching. making a point about why an audience would see a movie that is advertised as being so horribly brutal, etc. my guess is that haneke could not resist the irony of remaking a movie with that point, shot for shot, but in a different language. and if that is the case that is pretty awesome--- the opposite of selling out if you ask me, or if you gotta call it selling out at least a subversive way to do so.
-
a complete throwback.
is that a painting? it almost doesn't belong in 2007. -
Quint I just lost some respect for you.
-
So the trailer for the new one is online already: http://www.slashfilm.com/2007/09/16/funny-games-movie-trailer/
It looks shot for shot with the same actors... I wonder if its' going to have the truly brutal/disturbing part from the original. -
Potsmokin alien, i believe it's an austrian film, not frenchm although he has of course made french language films. I also heard that one of the reasons he was remaking this was because the american studio wanted to remake it and he refused unless he directed it. I think he's just trying to protect his film, which is amazing and doesn't need to be remade at all but if it HAS to be, he's going to do it and it's going to be shot for shot exactly the same as the last one. It's ironic, especially how it's a sort of critique of all these kinds of violent horror and torture films that seem to be so popular at the moment. I think it would be good for peple to see this and make them rethink why they go and watch these movies and what it means to be an audience member in those kinds of films. Of course alot of the people that do go see those films probably wouldn't understand that and just think it's boring or stupid or didn't make sense or have a plot. But eh, you get that.
-
made you look/sick. i disagree that _cache_ was overrated, but surely we all agree that _the piano teacher_ and _time of the wolf_ were brilliant, don't we? we should. esp. _time_, one of the greatest "end of the world" films of recent times. yeah, it's "boring," insofar as it doesn't have cgi explosions to cover up an absence of truly compelling narrative. like, e.g., the first _funny games_. why would the very talented herr haneke remake it, except to get the, uh, cache(t) of being all po-mo and shizz for building out a simulacrum, shot-for-shot, with a bigger box office for the journey. sluzier is an example, van sant's _psycho_ another, equally shot-for-shot derivative. jesus. what happens when we run out things to remake? RE-remake them? meantime, think john zorn will do the soundtrack again? yeah, me neither...
-
Has an almost 70's feel about it. Can't wait to see it.
-
There's a slight resemblance.
-
Take it easy with all them big fucking words. You might start to look pretentious.
-
...your post was pretty funny. Re-remake is my new favorite word.
-
..I guess didn't see many European film posters (or movies) and prefers the clichéd Hollywood ones.
-
Best poster I have seen in years.....
-
that STILL looks hot, crying.
Ahh, my sweet Naomi!! -
Saw the trailer. Interesting. The young psychos look pretty convincing and it looks like it will have some psychological thrills.
-
The original movie was okay, but we don't need a Hollywood version. If people want to see the original movie they should read subtitles, learn to read subtitles or learn German.
-
the original Funny Games is bad. It wasn't very suspenseful, and the crap with the rewinding is just awful. This can't be worse, but that's not saying much. I just rented this film from Netflix last week, and I was highly disapointed. Cache, which is his only other film I've seen, is much better.
-
Do you even know what "pretentious" means? Or is any movie that takes itself seriously pretentious to you?
-
I have mixed feelings about this movie having loved the original. I am a big Haneke fan and am still puzzled as to why he has remade this. I love the poster, and I think/hope that as Haneke has completed the project it hasn't been Hollywoodized.
-
Great poster really. DVD and poster design have been so shitty the last few years, it's nice to see something like this. The movie sounds cool too.
-
Actually, Quint, this poster pretty much defines "amazing."
-
Naomi Watts..... yeah. Did you see Naomi Watts? Um... hot. Yeah.
-
she chooses miserable roles
-
She looks like Tippi Hedren in that poster. If they ever do a remake of The Birds...
-
My god...I have heard there going to remake The Lives of Others as well...
So in the remake of Funny Games will the family live? I guess so...it's hollywood -
Huckabee's and Ellie Parker spring immediately to mind.
-
And the poster is very european.
-
I wonder if Funny Games will retain its original ending. The original was a frustrating, unnerving film that got under my skin.
Note: Naomi Watts was the brunette in Tank Girl. -
...but thats a great poster.
-
take it easy with your misplaced concern over the length of the words i choose. you might start to look like a a size queen. and/or a retard.
-
Funny Games is not a good film. I don't need a director to tell me that violence is bad blah blah blah. That's why I watch films instead of hurting people or watching real violence. Because its fake, and I'm not hurting anyone by watching it. And its not suspenseful, and after the son dies, the movie goes to hell, and it was barely good at that point. So maybe you are a terrible judge of quality for liking this.
And by the way, thanks for singling me out. No one has done that to any of my posts before. I feel honored, no matter how wrong your thoughts are. -
I was on this page then flipped over to the Naomi Watt's imdb page. I had facetiously posted here that she could do tippi/melanie in the Birds remake and lo and behold, she is rumoured to do so in 2009!!!
