Has JJ Found His Captain Kirk?!
Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.
I’m going to take a run at verifying this one later today, but for now, it looks like the rumor that first broke at IESB is gathering steam.
What’s the rumor?
Well, allegedly Mike Vogel has been cast as James T. Kirk for JJ Abrams’s upcoming STAR TREK movie.
How true is it? I have no idea at the moment. It certainly seems like IESB is confident about their source, and Vogel is starring in CLOVERFIELD/1-18-08/etc. right now, so maybe JJ saw something he really liked as those dailies came rolling in.
Hey guy -- You'll probably have seen the rumblings of this by the time you get this, but if you haven't, here's the latest Captain Kirk buzz that seems to be gathering steam. I'm not sure of my feelings on this one, but he seems to be the right age and it would fit with JJ Abrams' ussual recruitment strategy of bringing aboard his past stars to his newer projects. Also thinking that, with the Christmas Day launch in 2008, we absolutley have to be hearing something any day now regarding his casting decision for Kirk.
Yeah, I’m not sure what I think, either. I’ve never really had an opinion about Vogel one way or another based on anything I’ve seen him in. That could be the material, or it could be him as an actor. I’m not honestly sure at this point.
Regardless, we’ll keep you posted on this as soon as we hear anything official.

Who dat?
-
I thought I read about this yesterday??
-
This will be the best thing since Paul Walker was in that last movie he was in. The name of it escapes me ... as does the plot and his character, but no matter! I am pscyhed!
-
Since he's in every other movie out there
-
figured it would be an unknown, so this is probably as likely as anyone else.
-
This movie will suck anyways. Star Trek is dead.
Next -
I'm gonna have to jump on the Shermdawg bandwagon and say Jensen Ackles would make a pretty good young Kirk...it ain't Shakespeare.
-
Booooooooooooooooooooooooooo.
-
I'm surprised by this, but not shocked. Navigating and surviving a giant monster attack in New York will turn out to be just another Starfleet command scenario/simulation designed to test Rob/Kirk's command skills.
-
never heard of him, but glancing at some pics, it might work. Better to cast an unknown than a big star.
-
I was hoping that they were going to get Seth Rogen to play Captain Kirk with Kurt Loder as Spock, and CCH Pounder as Uhuru. My casting is all wrong for all the right reasons!
-
What a coup! They could use some technobabble to explain it away, or maybe Q could show up & let Picard live out Kirk's life ala "Tapestry". Nah, forget it.
-
of this PLANE
-
don't give up your dayjob overkill
-
On the plane?
-
i'll catch it cable someday.. for a few minutes.
-
Captain Kirk doesn't have to be rediculously good looking... Should have cast Ryan Reynolds... left field yes but this character isnt about looks, hes about charm and leadership, Ryan Reynolds playing this serious is a slam dunk!
-
please don't let this be true
-
It's not too late!!! DO IT J.J.!!!
-
I like the idea of Ryan Reynolds as Kirk!
-
Yes. He looks not like Matt Damon.
-
Thanks dude.... Im telling you, that dude can act when he wants to. Think about his turn in Smokin Aces and tell me if youre not buying it.... Slam Dunk.
-
I liked the pick for spock, but this guy looks too much like a little b---- to be Kirk.
-
Cotton Mcknight- offending people since 2004.
-
Remember when Neil Schweiber was always doing William Shatner in the lunchroom.
-
Hmm, I suppose Abrams know's he's right for Kirk. Better to go with someone who he knows as a lead.
-
I agree, Ryan Reynolds would be a much better pick for Kirk than Vogel. Vogel looks like a third-string high school quarterback that's only on the team to look popular.
-
a fellow Freaks and Geeks fan! That would be funny. As for this Kirk pick, I don't have a clue who he is. But, we definately need a manly man, and not some teen beat WB reject. If, we need to revisit Trek's past at all. I'm a huge original, Next Gen, and DS9 fan, in particular, but I'm not convinced we show go backwards. Let things cool down for a few years, and advance the timeline beyond the later series. I'm not even sure that will do the trick.
-
...after Indy beat him up? That's the only film-related Vogel I've ever heard about, anyway.

Not Kirk.Looks like he should be in High School Musical
by allpowerfulwizardofoz
Kirk is a mans man. The way Shatner looked and played him was perfect for the role and this opens up the same question again, why the fuck is this movie getting made other then money? This is an insult. You can't go recasting classic icons in these roles. There is no way anyone who is a true fan of the show will ever except anyone else playing Kirk, Spock or any of the originals from TOS. No matter who was cast as Kirk I can say I would not have been happy. This news just sucks. It ain't cool it's anything but.
-
Maybe he'll surprise, anything is possible I guess, but personally I'm really hoping this isn't true.
-
He at least has the panache' the role needs.
-
Who wants to see Kirk and Spock not played by Shatner or Nimoy? Ridiculous.
-
OH GOD. My friend photoshopped Jensen Ackles as Kirk a while back...wouldn't that be a better choice?
-
I don't know this guy.
-
I confess as I was watching those god-awful Next Generation movies I kept wondering "why the hell are they making a MOVIE with TV actors like Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, and even dare I say, Patrick Stewart? Sure, these are all OK actors, but when I see a big budget movie I want to see MOVIE STARS. I thought, why can't they just make a film set in the Trek Universe with Matt, Angelina, Jaylo, Brad, Leonardo, Tom or even one of the lesser Baldwins? Surely one of these stars has to be a trek fan. Nobody except Trekkies want to see a sci-fi movie with a bunch of actors they've been watching for free. And nobody wants to see a movie with a bunch of no-name schlubs. This also applies to Firefly and other Sci-Fi shows.
-
My first reaction was that he's too fucking pretty....but admittedly, I haven't seen him act. He's got to be able to play boyish inexperience, surely, but he has to be able to grow... as young Lt. Kirk will grow into the iconic Captain Kirk.
And to respond to some of the previous posters... yes, I can most assuredly be a true fan of Star Trek and buy that other actors will be playing those characters. I'm a true fan of Shakespeare, and how many actors have played his characters? -
I don't like his face.
-
At least the guy is fun to watch... this Vogel prick looks about as interesting as a metrosexual at an oxygen bar.
-
...Stephen Dorff. He's too old to play a 'young' Kirk now, I suppose. Pity.
-
The new hip sexy cool fab u less startrek. I knew paramount would fuck it up those guys are idiots, Hmmmm How to destroy a franchise 101.
-
THis guy is too young and way too gay looking. And he was awful in Poseidon--which is saying a lot.
-
. . . beat a dead horse.
-
i think not.
-
That's right, Jensen Ackles.
-
I miss movies with movie stars in them. I don't care how much they cost. I mean if it's that important to not pay a big salary then, imo, the movie's not that important. I felt the same way about the Watchmen, but at least I knew some of those guys.
-
Not really, but it would be fun to watch him hand the Klingons, Romulans, Gorn and others their collective alien asses... And Penn could certainly deliver the "KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!"
-
Evidently, it's a hard life in CIA black ops. Now I don't know much about Vogel, but he seems ideal. You don't want anyone too famous in there.
-
And who's gonna play the young young Wesley Crusher? Wil Wheaton could play his dad. Honestly, this prequelising of star wars and star trek is becomming Muppet Babies. 20 years from now, who's gonna play harry potter's parents in the seven prequel books and who's gonna care?
-
her fangs are located in her vagina.
PLEEEEEEZE no pretty cardboard boys for kirk. The captian must be able to control his crew. Kirk is testosterone in space, humping any dame with a pulse and leaving before they stick him with the child support. The prime directive? Action. -
...to play Kirk, because he'll be playing The Flash in Justice League. He IS Wally West, for damn sure.
-
about this movie
-
Anyone?? They have a similar look and DJ has done some decent work in dramatic turns. Oh...and what about Archie Kao from CSI as Sulu?
-
I doubt he would ever consider it, but he would be amazing.
-
i was gunna mention mclovin too, but thats because i saw the word vogel with out reading the rest.
-
...not CW pout! This movie is dropping WAY down into DVD-release territory!
-
C.K. Lamoo and CherryValance, are you effing kidding me? Like, 90% of all movies have Movie Stars in them. Some good movies don't get made because there aren't the right Movie Stars to fill the roles. Some movies are totally fucking ruined by the Movie Stars in them. Do you a-holes go to the movies to watch Movie Stars, or to watch Movies? (You know what a movie is, right, it's a good story with shot well and acted well) It's people like you that make Oceans 12 and 13 possible.
-
I'm convinced that J.J. Abrams can make anything good. I trust him.
-
Goes on unauthorized "fact finding" missions of diplomacy to the Klingon and Romulan homeworlds, and then returns and tells Starfleet that they are the true aggressors in the United Federation Of Planets.
-
because crew cuts are ah-some. Somewhere two 16 year old fat kids bump chests and await T2INO!
-
Someone a little YOUNGER to play the captain of the starship Enterprise? This guy's almost 30, how will he appeal to the teens?
-
"No, I can't." "Well, at least you can be a Captain." Yeah, this guy looks like he's from The Hills. There's no way he's living up to Shatner. No way.
-
that was some funny shit man.
-
Sorry, even if you didn't like the OC, it's like this guy was born to play the part. Plus, he can do the broken speech thing, easy.
-
That's it, just, no.
-
Only worse.
No. -
I'll put my vote out for him again. He actually has depth as an actor and can do angst well, not like this bland looking actor.
-
I'm sure Mike Vogel is a nice guy and all, but I see no Kirk in the man. I've been wrong before, though...once.
-
I don't know who he is but he'd make a great Kirk
-
Turd is right. Kirk needs a physicality and a charisma. I couldn't think of anyone who could really pull him off until Turd mentioned Reynolds. Reynolds can actually act as well. He's the right choice.
-
Didn't this bitch get his leg cut off by Leatherface in the TCM remake?
-
Ryan Reynolds actually takes hold.. I've been thinking about this today... No not Ryan Reynolds specifically cause.. well... I like Vagina.. But him as Kirk! I can see him in that chair yelling orders at the crew, beating the shit out of someone, then banging hot aliens.... I'm sold! JJ we know you read this shit, get Ryan Reynolds NOW before he attaches himself to that sinking ship JLA! Get R Done!
-
Are you DENYING the existence of huge Dilithium Crystal deposits in both the Klingon and Romulan territories?
As for the so-called 'over-mining' of the Klingon moon Praxis which caused the explosion that lead their inclusion in the Federation...there's absolutely no evidence of this....and who responded to the initial distress signal? None other than Captain HIKARU SULU!!! Is that just a coincidence. Huh?
Watch 'Loose Star Trek Change' on Youtube. It proves everything. -
I...should...play...kirk!
-
...but isn't the point of this to cast younger than the original actors were in the original series. I'm pretty sure Reynolds is almost my age, which would make him too old.
-
James T Kirk's father. What was his name? George? He was in Starfleet Security?
And I don't even get paid by Paramount for this genius stuff.
This movie is gonna be, like, dynamic cinematic fare. -
Why does Kirk need to be recast!?!? Just make a different movie with different FUCKING CHARACTERS!!! Dammit I fucking HATE THIS SHIT!! Who wants to accept a new fucking Kirk? Not a real fan. REAL fans want new things to get into, bigger ideas! Geez...If I want Kirk, I'll watch the old shows. That's good enough for me. Shatner is always Kirk and that's that.
-
That guy would be a poor choice. He is far too pretty to be Kirk.
-
It would really suck if they can't find a spot for Shatner in this film. If they don't write him in it is because they simply didn't want him. What a waste that would be.
-
He doesn't look like he should be playing Kirk. We all know Shatner is Kirk. Anybody else is a letdown.
-
You know it's right...
-
Anyone think Mathew Fox would be a good Captain Kirk? I want to see a younger crew that is going through the process of figuring out how to work together for the first time. I think Mathew Fox would be perfect as being the frustrated captain trying to fill in such big shoes, yet struggling to do it. I don't want to see a Captain Kirk with 20+ years of experience on the Enterprise. Lets see an incompetent leader that is figuring it all out through his mistakes.
-
Honestly, we HAD other, shittier series and knockoffs of Star Trek. They didn't work because they lacked the character dynamics necessary (as well as any sense of charisma). People knock Shatner, but his take of Kirk was brilliant for a number of reasons. The characters played off one another perfectly. I say the reboot is a good idea because at least they have a solid mooring in place rather than giving us a boring, non-entity like Picard. But we need real, larger-than-life movie stars. I have faith in JJ thus far.
-
in case nobody's said it yet
-
That would be AMAZING.
http://www.youtube.com/eyowzitgoin -
Nice work Abrams! you have made James T. Kirk into an effeminate looking underwear model. Way to go!
-
and the suits will retreat into the shadows licking their wounds. If there's any justice.
-
No no no no noooooo...
-
Star Trek isn't dead; Star Trek spin-offs are dead. Star Trek's original formula is the best. Stories are focused on three main characters you can get invested with in one story. Playing the original characters is the most direct way to use that formula. It's more honest that doing a spin-off with someone that's Spock-like and someone that's McCoy-like, or worse dividing their functions among multiple characters. Spin-off premieres always dragged because they had to spend so much time introducing too many characters. The point of Star Trek is to tell a good story. Name one reason the new movie can't do that.
-
so if he can give off equal amounts of the charm/swager/duty vibe he'll be fine.
-
He is one of the WORST actors in the business. He's incapable of solidly delivering ANY KIND of emotion, and he's completely devoid of talent... wait... maybe he SHOULD play Kirk. HAHAH.
www.youtube.com/eyowzitgoin -
Keifer would have been the best choice for the role. He looks and acts a whole lot like Shatner.
-
That is all.
-
Burt.
-
Ryan Reynolds would be perfect. I don't care if he's older than the other actors, he'd outperform all of them anyway. Just please, no CW rejects as Kirk.
-
From "Pitch Black". 32, still younger than Shatner was in TOS (35).
-
Kirk style...Ryan Reynolds is a smart-ass as well. Actually, if you go back and watch "Two Guys, A Girl & A Pizza Place" that show demonstrates why Reynolds would be good for the role. Kirk is a swashbuckling post-graduate frat-boy with a teflon ego...that screams Reynolds or Ackles to me. This Vogel douchebag looks vacuous to me...Captain Cardboard.
-
is cool as hell and I want him to have a big career. I really like that guy, but in no way shape or form does he have the natural charisma or sex appeal to pull of Kirk.. He's the moody cop, not the cop that solves the crime and winds up banging the murder victim's super hot sister... That is Ryan Reynolds.
-
would kick this homo's ass!!! even his fanbase admit he's BORING
-
Barring that, Jensen Ackles or even Dane Cook.
-
I suggest Reynolds a long time ago. I call first. He's even a better choice for Kirk than Christopher Eccleston was right for The Joker. Unfortunately, the Hollywood suits don't always listen to the online suggestions that are better than their own selections.
-
And I thought my backup was questionable. (Mark-Paul Gosselaar)
-
He even looks a bit like Kirk and he's Canadian. Probably too old tho, he's old enough to shave.
