Korben Dallas' look at what may be happening at CANNES

Published at:  Apr 13, 1999 11:45:38 AM CDT

Cannes.... that place where noone is 100% sure what is going to spark and catch fire. A place where legends of futures yet to come to the rest of the world get started. What legends will be borne this time? I don't know... but here's a look from Korben...

We're nine days away from the official announcment of the Cannes Film
Festival selection, and I wanted to share with you the basic rumors that
are flying around right now.

As you know, the Festival will be held from May 12th trough May 23rd. We
already know that the French film POLA X, by Leos Carax, starring
Catherine Deneuve will open it.
We also know a tribute will be given to Louise Brooks and that Kristin
Scott-Thomas will host the opening ceremony on TV. The president of the
jury is David Cronenberg !

Aside from those few things... that's it ! It's only rumors. Jim
Jarmush should be there with GHOST DOG, Jane Campion with HOLY SMOKE,
Manoel de Oliveira with LA PRINCESSE DE CLEVES. Peter Greenaway's EIGHT
WOMEN AND A HALF should be in competition. The Russian blockbuster hit
LE BARBIER DE SIBERIE (with Richard Harris and Julia Ormond) is shown on
May 14th. The big budget LE TEMPS RETROUVE, starring Catherine Deneuve
and John Malkovich, and directed by Raul Ruiz should be there too.
Harry, rejoice ! Takeshi Kitano's new film will be there !!!! It's
called KIKUJIRO NO NATSU (which translates as "Kikujiro's summer") !
(by the way, if you haven't seen SONATINE... rent it NOW !!!!!!!)

Roman Polanski's supernatural thriller THE NINTH GATE, starring Johnny
Depp will not be ready on time, the same for the epic EST-OUEST
(directed by Régis Wargnier, winner of Best Foreign Film in 1992 for
INDOCHINE).

As for the closing ceremony, THE PHANTOM MENACE will not be there,
neither will Luc Besson's JOAN OF ARC. So that leaves on open field for
EYES WIDE SHUT... but I doubt Christiane Kubrick will authorize it. So
ENTRAPMENT seems to be the top contender.

That's it. Doesn't look like a great year this time... too bad.

Korben Dallas.

    Dogma?

    by gluttony

I thought the reason dogma wasnt released last december was because the brothers weinstien wanted it to be at cannes. I hope it is there from everything i heard it could get the palm d'ore. Would'nt that just kick all ass if kevin smith a former convience store clerk won the the palm d'ore lord nows i would be doing back flips just like when quentin tarantino won his oscar.

I was there last year and the movie line up sucked too!

    by uncapie

What is with american distributors? Have they all got their heads up their butts? If they show DOGMA, it'll be the big hit of Cannes like Pulp Fiction was a few years ago. Instead they show shit like that Travolta as president flick and Blues Brothers 2000, which they only thing that was good was the party where I got to see BB band play from ten feet away and a cool pair of $80.00 Raybans for free given out as a party favor along with a cheap, paper BB fedora. Oh, yes there were some topless, bodacious ta-ta's on the Cotre De Azure, but not as many as they say. Go DOGMA!

    Hayek

    by forrest

Harry, I've got some more news about what will be going on in Cannes. A movie from the highly acclaimed mexican director Arturo Ripstein will be there competing. That is official. The movie is called "El Coronel no tiene quien le escriba", which in English means something like "The Coronel hasn't got anyone who writes to him". It is based on the book by writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Salma Hayek has got a supporting role in it as she continues to work a little in her own country. She has already said that she will be there at Cannes on May. Just think about it, if "Dogma" enters the competition, she will have two different movies there to promote. Can't wait!

    Cannes, PHAH!!!!

    by buddy ackerman

Yeah, right! The Cannes Film Festival eat my boxer lint!! I've been twice, never had any fun and the women are scary, unclothed and stinking! The men look like Mickey Rourke with a smaller attention span. The movies ALL SUCK! There's never a good reason to go, because the whole thing is a big crapshoot! You'd have better luck playing the slots next to some old woman who would suck your cock for a quarter!
All these films sound like 'ART'! WHO THE FUCK WANTS TO SEE ART?!?!
I want see MOVIES!! BIG AMERICAN BLOWING SHIT THE HELL UP MOVIES!!!
IF IT DOESN'T HAVE A BUDGET, BIG STARS AND RIGHTEOUS SEX AND BAD ASS GUNFIGHTS IT AIN'T FOR ME!!!!
I'm not trying to imply that all foriegn movies are garbage, that would be ignorant. Foriegn movies aren't BAD they're BORING!!! THEY HAVE FUNNY ACCENTS!!! THE BREASTS ARE STRANGE AND SAGGY!! THE WOMEN HAVE CROOKED TEETH!!!
I DO NOT LIKE TO BE COMPARED TO HUGH GRANT!!! STOP CALLING ME THAT, MARA!!!!!!

Pros and Cannes with Buddy Ackerman.

    by uncapie

I agree with Buddy. Some of the films do suck and are quite boring. I see better dogshit at the American Film Market than at Cannes. I did get to eat at LA PIZZA(Great pizza!), got drunk at LA CHONGA(A tiny bar down the street from the Carlton.) the Blues Brothers 2000 party, saw some bodacious ta-ta's on the beach, hung out with Troma poster girl Penelope Shipis and met two nice ladies for dinner. One french, the other a ukranian redhead that was looking for a husband! Oucha, M'goucha! Hey, Buddy, don't drink the coffee!

    Whaddaya Mean it Sucks?!?

    by kallisti

    Are you KIDDING?!?!?!?
You're saying that a film festival (probably) featuring new films by Jarmusch, Campion, Ruiz, Polanski, Greenaway, Kitano and maybe Kubrick is BAD? Not to mention the films that no one has heard about yet. What film planet do you come from???

Kallisti...listen sunshine, have you been there?

    by uncapie

If you haven't, then don't get your hopes up you media-hyped fed tv baby! Unless you've walked in the park, sunned yourself on the Courte De Azure or travelled up the streets and alleys of Cannes then you have no idea what its about. You have to smell the scent of the city. Feel its heartbeat. Not write about it from the bullshit that's been fed to you. There were three pavillions there. The french, where they showed retrospect films and had booths set up for film exhibitors. The american; who were ruder than hell to any fellow american. What a bunch of wanna-be's that were running it and they didn't know shit about films! The british pavilion was the nicest and most polite. They even offerred free sanwiches, pub grub and the beverage of your choice for filmakers. The americans should learn a lesson in humility from the brits. Oh, and by-the-way, the french hate ALL AMERICANS! The cab drivers will fuck you every which way they can. They like to give you back old money which is no good after three years in their country. You have to go to the Banc Du France to exchange it which takes forever, but you do get your new francs after an hour. They also pad their meters with "extras". Extra for luggage, extra for another passenger, little shitty things like that. My advice to you is, book yourself a flight get over there, learn something and get away from the tv, Sega Boy!

This is what's happening with Dogma at Cannes

    by martin q blank

Kevin recently screened a nearly-finished print to the selection panel. They will apparently get the yay/nay on April 22nd. I'd imagine that even if it is not selected for competition (and it is possible that it won't be) that it will screen at some point during the festivities. You can get the offical Dogma updates at www.newsaskew.com as always.

Eyes Wide Shut at Cannes ? No.

    by kubrick

One of the reasons I think
Christiane Kubrick will not let Eyes Wide Shut premiere
    at Cannes is because that
David Cronenberg is judge of films
there...and Cronenberg is well-known not be fond of
Kubrick's films. He really disliked Kubrick's The Shining and
I doubt Ms. Kubrick would want
    Eyes Wide Shut to premiere
at the film festival to get
    "bad buzz"
