"Crusade" Save Campaign: ready to rock
Glen here...
...with some news about on-going efforts to save the Babylon 5 spin-off series,
Crusade.
Regular Coaxial readers will remember HREF="http://www.aint-it-cool-news.com/display.cgi?id=3256">my recent post which
featured a somewhat appocalyptic characterization of Crusade's chances of being "renewed"
after its initial thirteen episode run on TNT. ((Glen Note: the 22 episode first season of
Crusade was cut short by the network after they decided the show wasn't their cup of tea.
Subsequently, several other networks showed interest in picking up the series & taking it off TNT's
hands, but no deal could be worked at the time. There are indications the Sci Fi Channel
may be interested in picking-up the show in the near future, but logistical and economic
considerations make the notion a tricky one.))
Well, those sentiments didn't fly too well with many B5 fans. Can't help that though, I
gotta be as honest as I can on this page. While I must...in all good conscience...reiterate my belief
that Crusade's chances of resurrection are rather slim at best (due to various considerations
too detailed to go into herein & the fact that the reasons could fill a book. Now there's an idea -
this whole mess would probably make a pretty amazing Barbarians at the Gate-style story!),
I will concede there IS AN OUTSIDE POSSIBILITY that somehow, in someway, this crisis could
all be worked out in Crusade's favor.
Accordingly, I am pointing you towards a "Save Crusade" web site which is just about
to make its most desperate, passionate push to increase public awareness of Crusade - in
the hopes their efforts will result in both increased viewership of the show (a factor whose
importance I can not stress enough. In fact, it may be the only way to save the show), and
increase the visibility of the show & its fan base in the eyes of The Powers That Be.
Currently, there are plans underway to take-up a collection
from contributing fans in the hopes of buying a statement / ad in a major industry publication (TV
Guide is being tossed around at the moment). Legally, I can not encourage you to contribute money
to this cause - but I can make you aware of said cause (which I just have), and even go so far as to
say the people at the site linked below have busted their asses to make this "Save Crusade"
thing work - and I believe them to be quite reliable and serious in their efforts.
So, if you're in the mood to (possibly) make a difference, go to it! You can HREF="http://www.astro.umd.edu/~fleming/index.html">CLICK HERE to jump to the "Save
Crusade web site, look to the right side of your screen for the "What You Can Do" toggles
to learn more about the site's heroic efforts, and how you and your friends can help if so inclined.
In related news (and to answer more than a few e-mails about the subject), NO, Coaxial has
not forgotten about Crusade. In fact, one of the reasons for the decreased number of
updates on Coaxial over the last few weeks is due to my preparation of a rather extensive series of
articles which...if all goes well...will pretty much result in my having reviewed the entire series before
it actually gets aired. Concurrently, CORDWAINER HAWK (who has reviewed many other
Crusade-related scripts & a few episodes for Coaxial) is feverishly prepping a few
new (extensive) reports which should be posted in the very near future.
So, Crusade is not gone from Coaxial, and it has not been forgotten simply because of
the show's current predicament. In fact, it's safe to say, we haven't even gotten
started...

Desperate times call for desperate measures. For those who don't know - I'm a Russian Babylon 5 and Star Trek fan.Watched those while living abroad.TV companies over here aren't likely to show Crusade any time soon, maybe they never would. So, if there are any understanding fans out there willing to spare a tape - please contact me.The same request goes for the forthcoming Deep Space 9 finale.I'm not sure if I would be able to pay for the tapes, but I could try .... -
Star Trek had a great cartoon series(like bad drugs it will be better than nothing at all).
-
Fellow B5 fans, let me be straight with you: the _only_ way "Crusade" has even a snowball's chance in hell is if it scores a major ratings upset its first two episodes out. The key fact to remember (which Glen first reported in an earlier article) is that everyone's "Crusade" contracts expire by July 1st. "Crusade" premieres, what, the second week of June? That's a _very_ narrow window of opportunity. The other thing I would advise is that none of you do anything crazy (like pooling your collective lifes' savings on a "TV Guide" ad) for a series you haven't even seen an episode of. And I'll just leave it at that for now...

Following on from what Robogeek
said: just make sure you all
watch it.
Being in the UK, it's very
frustrating, being totally unable
to support the show in any way
that would help.
Another VERY important thing is
that you don't just tell people
you know on the internet, but that
you tell EVERYBODY you know OFF
the internet to watch it. The 'net
fans aren't enough to save CRUSADE.
However, if you get all your 'net
contacts, as well as your friends
in your street, at school, at
work, your family - EVERYONE you
goddamn know - to watch it, then
maybe there's a chance to make it
a ratings smash.
Aaaahh....studio executives....
don't you just *love* 'em? -
...to see if the show is worth saving first?
-
I just read about a new Sci-Fi network (unnamed as far as I know) that may be out as early as January 1 that will be run by Viacom. Okay, Viacom owns Star Trek (at least everything past TOS) and some Star Trek nuts hate everything that isn
-
Whether millions of additional viewers watch Crusade, or millions fewer watch, isn't it all EXACTLY the same unless some of those viewers are Nielson families? Through six degrees of separation shouldn't we all know someone-who-knows-someone (recursively) until we know a ratings maker or two?
-
AS I've mentioned here and in my SFTV mailings, the Sci-Fi Channel is the most likely place for Crusade to end up. The attempt to move it there in February wasn't successful because they were attempting to move the whole show over to USA/SFC, moving it completely off of TNT and continuing production on the first season. USA didn't have the funds for that. However, they are in a position to pick Crusade up for a second season BEFORE the options expire on the actors contracts. I have verified this with Straczynski. The SFC is likely waiting to see how the intial ratings are (and have been looking at the ratings for their new shows) before making a decision to go ahead with. The ratings on TNT would have to be dynamite (pun intended) for TNT to reverse their position.
-
Rather B.: The new Viacom SF channel wouldn't be launched until fall 2001 at the earliest, cuz of a non-competition clause in the deal that ended Viacom's half-ownership of the Sci-Fi Channel and USA.
-
As a previous poster said, if there is a new science fiction network from Viacom, it would not start until 2001.
It also usually takes several years for a network to gain a significant number of subscribers. The current trend is three years to attain about 50% coverage IF a network is well-backed financially.
I see the new channel as remote possibility for seeing other JMS SF, perhaps even an alternative spin-off of B5, but not Crusade in its current form.
Since I've never been enthused about Crusade's concept, maybe it's not a bad thing to consider a different spin-off a few years from now. -
I want to see if its worth saving first. Although the worshipers at the temple of JMS may not think so, it just could be that the show (crusade) is bad. Perhaps thats why TNT wanted to revamp it in the first place.
We will see.... -
I read your note with interest. Good advice.
I wondered you have seen the show. -
For all those who wish to wait until we've seen some: I hear ya'. I wasn't blown away by ACTA (but thought it was cool ENOUGH to watch the series). I worry that it won't be as good as B5. But what if it is? Preemptive preparation is the only way to save it. As much as I'm enjoying Farscape, lord knows that's not enough to keep me watching SFC. Everything else over there smells of warm cheese. I'm ready to help with the Crusade, provided it looks worth it.
-
I have seen all the shows here in Ireland and can tell you that the show got better when the jms eps were shown towards the end(before TNT revamped a few things), and it is worth saving, just think how good it will get if a network lets it grow to become another five year epic!

april????? it is now september!!!

If Legend of the Rangers is a ratings smash then the Sci-Fi channel is probably going to ressurect Crusade. So everyone please watch Legend of the Rangers on the 19th of this month (January) at 9:00. Judging from the ratings on the previous showings of Crusade if Legend of the Rangers succeeds then the old cast will probably be clammering to go back to the show.
