A Quick (And Very Cool) Inference/Notion/Implication Regarding The Creature FX For CLOVERFIELD?!?!

Published at:  Sep 25, 2007 8:55:56 AM CDT

Merrick here...

This message pretty much speaks for itself.

While, clearly, this involves a touch of supposition and inference...the implication makes a lot of sense given JJ Abrams' level of overall Geekiness.

I was at ADAPT2007 in Montreal today (a fair where high-profile people come and speak about their work on movies, games and television) and Phil Tippett's (from Star Wars, Starship Troppers and Robocop fame to name a few) Tippet Studios are working on a very big hush-hush project with J.J. Abrams which he wouldn't name.

Since he mostly does creatures, could it be something for that untitled JJ movie coming soon? Considering Tippett's track record for creature design and animation, I think we'll be in for a treat!

If you use this, call me Fronsac

I love Tippett's work & really hope this pans out. Wonder if this means we'll get a hybrid of effects types as opposed to entirely CGI? Could be a lot of fun; this often garners the best results & completely matches the "old fashioned monster movie" nature of the film we've been hearing allusions to.

More to come as more comes in...

    by roderich

surely is a fine choice for special effects regarding oversized/strange/unusual monsters, as he originally comes from stop motion animation (ESB) and uses his knowledge to "animate" computermonsters, which works fantastic in Starship Troopes. Oversized/strange/unusual of course means only one thing: Cthulhu!

I agree this film has engaged in geek marketing overkill, but if the final result looks good and gives me goosebumps in the theater, then I'm still onboard.
For "Cloverfield" I already knew the director would hire some kickass unit to do the FX, so this news doesn't surprise me. Regardless of who it is, I hope they give us something intense and scary and unique.

See, if there is even the tiniest grain of information, such as brand of cups used by the PA's to serve coffee, a news story will appear about this 1-18-08 overhyped movie. It has taken a rumor of Jessica Biel being possibly cast as WW, to get a story up on JLA outside of the forums. This movie better be the next best thing to sliced bread since it is being treated that way.

I know, it's about as stupid everyone said I was for being the final holdout that the guy said the monster was a lion and everyone turned their guns on me, giving their highbrow opinions as to how moronic and unrealistic a lion monster would be.of course! because a whale-monster is sooooooo much more believable.have a great day.oh wait, this movie sounds dumb.that is all.

I've been doing some searching trying to find out myself, I got it off a blog that said it was a "fake". Well, after searching more deeply I discovered that the earliest site to have the image states that it was a real concept image that had been leaked. I also found 2 other sites saying it was the real deal.

Personally, I think that it WAS leaked and then labeled fake to throw people off.

So much for the escalating Cloverfield Viral campaign

    by killakane

Seems like JJ's attentions are focussed eslewhere. I'm hoping that Cloverfield or whatever it transpires to be called can regain the initial interest it sparked with that teaser; but it'd take something more substantial than a few photos and and a hokey soft drink site, the next trailer really needs to impress. As for a possible mooted Cthulhu/Lovecraft connection, I hope that's true, it's lend a bit more weight to what presently sounds like a verite but still pretty generic monster on the rampage flick. What I'd really like to see (and I'm sure would many of the Lovecraft TB devotees) is a slavishly devoted take on the whole Call of Cthulhu/Shadow over Innsmouth/Dagon mythos. In the hands of a skilled director like Cuaron or Del Torro it would be something bordering on geekasm.

    Non News

    by gengrievous82

Can't believe some of the comments up there. Even if this is a snippet of news, the fact that the name "Phil Tippett" is attached to this Cloverfield project says a lot. If the name Phil Tippett is unknown to you then you don't deserve to call yourself a film fan. Sheesh. And no, he did not get "shitcanned" in the middle of Jurassic Park's production. Even though it was decided to move from go-motion animation to CGI, they still needed someone that knew how to animate (ie. Phil Tippett). Tippett Studios is still very much involved in providing VFX for films too and is currently in production on The Golden Compass and The Spiderwick Chronicles. And he's friggin ILM alumni people! Ok, I'm done. Just seeing that lack of respect for a true FX pioneer up there was a bit daunting. Time for a nap.

    How about a good story?

    by bigbill

I skipped most of the comments. The thing is, I don't give a flying frack if the effects are CGI or practical as long as they don't look too cheesy. The key to how good the movie will be is story and performances. We've had some amazing looking movies the last 30 years that were simply crap because producers cared more about how the movie looked than whether it made any sense

    Umm, yeah.

    by rutgerman

I knew this months ago when my friend at Tippett (yes, he's real) told me he was working on this. I had no idea that this was big news, otherwise I would have said something. And by the way, even THEY don't know what the final title of the film is going to be (they're calling it Cloverfield also).

Um yeah...they better get more stuff out there quickly

    by qweruiop

because the interest in this movie is waning FAST. I will admit the teaser was a brilliantly perfect way to introduce a movie to the world, and the subsequent websites and their muddled clues only helped fuel the fire. (Not to mention deciphering the real ones from the fake ones). But now over a couple of months the only thing to report are...more blurred pictures, a website with dancing sodas, a roar, and a youtube-live video of one of the main characters talking in her room? WTF? There isn't even a title to the film yet. The interest is draining fast on this movie. I consider myself to be a pretty good indicator of the POA (pulse of America), and if I'm losing interest in this I can guarantee a lot of other people are too. By now the hype is so overinflated that the bubble is just ready to burst, and there will definitely be a backlash if nothing is given out soon. And it better be something good, i.e. another great trailer or at least a website with some good info on the movie. If the latest BIG update is just another blurry photo of people walking around, a lot of people will be done with this movie.

That IS the pic of the real monster

    by ray gamma

It's funny to watch the movie production company sending guys onto this thread to say things like "I'm a friend of Doug and we just did those scribbles for fun, they're not the real deal" etc...

    bollocks.

That pic is the real design, and they just don't want it to leak yet because they're currently working on a huge new teaser.

    by qweruiop

...the rumors that we won't even be shown a full monster view during the movie. What I mean is that the monster's face will always be obscured or out of focus somehow, never fulling showing it. This kind of makes sense considering a) since it's a handheld-camera type movie it'll be difficult to conceive the camera user conveniently having money shots of the monster, and b) this sounds like the pretentious thing that J.J. Abrams would do. What's the best way to live up to the monster's hype? Don't show the most important things about it and instead have the people use their imagination.
