A Quick (And Very Cool) Inference/Notion/Implication Regarding The Creature FX For CLOVERFIELD?!?!
Merrick here...
This message pretty much speaks for itself.
While, clearly, this involves a touch of supposition and inference...the implication makes a lot of sense given JJ Abrams' level of overall Geekiness.
I was at ADAPT2007 in Montreal today (a fair where high-profile people come and speak about their work on movies, games and television) and Phil Tippett's (from Star Wars, Starship Troppers and Robocop fame to name a few) Tippet Studios are working on a very big hush-hush project with J.J. Abrams which he wouldn't name.
Since he mostly does creatures, could it be something for that untitled JJ movie coming soon? Considering Tippett's track record for creature design and animation, I think we'll be in for a treat!
If you use this, call me Fronsac
I love Tippett's work & really hope this pans out. Wonder if this means we'll get a hybrid of effects types as opposed to entirely CGI? Could be a lot of fun; this often garners the best results & completely matches the "old fashioned monster movie" nature of the film we've been hearing allusions to.
More to come as more comes in...

What a great Muppet he'll make.
-
Really, this says nothing.
-
I heard from some guy that this other guy he knows that another guy works doing stuff that might be in a movie that we don't know anything about.
But you didn't hear it from me. -
Crew member killed on 'Dark Knight' set
-
CHUD told me to be bored with it.
-
poop.
-
whole "website clue hunt thing". What ever happened with that?
-
Oh, wait, no he didn't.
But ST CGI holds up incredibly well, so I can't hate on him too bad. -
couldn't it be for Trek? it would be nice to see some alien looking aliens in a Star Trek movie.
-
that snippet was more like a granule
-
I am not excited.
-
surely is a fine choice for special effects regarding oversized/strange/unusual monsters, as he originally comes from stop motion animation (ESB) and uses his knowledge to "animate" computermonsters, which works fantastic in Starship Troopes. Oversized/strange/unusual of course means only one thing: Cthulhu!
-
Gimme my Cthulhu!
-
I agree this film has engaged in geek marketing overkill, but if the final result looks good and gives me goosebumps in the theater, then I'm still onboard.
For "Cloverfield" I already knew the director would hire some kickass unit to do the FX, so this news doesn't surprise me. Regardless of who it is, I hope they give us something intense and scary and unique. -
Dittos to Mr. Monkey. Stop Losting everything. Especially Lost.
-
And am I the only one who thinks he did a better job with CGI humans in BLADE 2 than SPIDER MAN? Those reapers crawling on ceilings were awesome.
-
Maybe I selled something wrong but you get the point. This boderline pissing people off. If the end result does not rock everyone's collective worlds people will not stick around for the end of Lost, I garuntee it.
-
nobody will care. Talk about overhype, overkill, way to early. Somehow I get the feeling the end result is going to be a let down.
-
...i'm quite glad it's not Cthulhu. Why? Because after all the interest that Cloverfield has generated for Cthulhu there's gotta be a Cthulhu movie coming. I cannot wait for Cloverfield and I can't wait for a Cthulhu movie, I really hope there get someone like Gore Verbinski or someone like that for the Cthulhu movie with a mega-budget. What do you think?
-
I think Cthulhu looks the most coolest big monster of them all, even Godzilla.
-
See, if there is even the tiniest grain of information, such as brand of cups used by the PA's to serve coffee, a news story will appear about this 1-18-08 overhyped movie. It has taken a rumor of Jessica Biel being possibly cast as WW, to get a story up on JLA outside of the forums. This movie better be the next best thing to sliced bread since it is being treated that way.
-
I'm still excited about a cool giant monster movie with verite stylistic sensibilities. It has been my dream to see something like that since that first tracking shot of the gallimipus running in jurassic park. I'll be in the cinema with my slusho shirt on 1-18-08.
-
It's Al Gore in a rubber Godzilla suite whacking scaled models.
Cool. -
Has anyone seen this great episode?
-
If you love fx and monster movies. Tippett is brilliant.
-
And will have special Voltron-like effects made by Phil Tippet. Just ask Clancy Brown. He said it was huge.
-
Whatever buzz marketing created died long ago.
-
ill try to squeeze something out of him
-
You know it.
-
early this morning...stay tuned for breaking news....
-
Wasn't Tippett Studios rumoured to be attached to this a couple of months back?
-
When I was 100% certain that, when the original cloverfield trailer came out, and the guy in the trailer said "it's a lion and it's huge", and there was a HUGE reaction from aicn readers and posted that I was an idiot, I'm pleased and proud to say that I've been vindicated in so much that the monster in the movie looks like:A WHALE!!!!!!!how completely stupid is that? oh wait! I know, it's about as stupid everyone said I was for being the final holdout that the guy said the monster was a lion and everyone turned their guns on me, giving their highbrow opinions as to how moronic and unrealistic a lion monster would be.of course! because a whale-monster is sooooooo much more believable.have a great day.oh wait, this movie sounds dumb.that is all.
-
I've tried standard html for that before to no result. please advise.
-
seriously....scales that turn into raptors?? couldnt they have done something more realistic to go in style with the handicam filming?
-
How exciting!
-
That is all.
-
WHAT A FANTASTIC PIECE OF NEWS!!! Of course it HAS to be Cloverfield!! I mean- they hardly ever used traditional makeup and prosthetics for Star Trek aliens so it can't be that. Exciting.
Aint It Grasping News. -
Wow!
-
Big news. I like Tippet
-
Neat trick.
-
Lion!
-
Is it just me or is the news on here really low grade and always behind other sites?
Been reading this site for years and over the last year it seems to be going to the dogs... -
agreed. the only reason I keep coming back to this site is b/c I'm lazy.
-
I saw that episode. "Clark Ashton!"
-
Comics2film and Superherohype have been scooping AICN for a good while now.
-
never seen someone do that to their user name. You have the power...abuse it wisely.
-
With great power...yada yada yada.
Beware the dark side. -
weeks, but harry seems to be extending his. and there havent been any pictures of Harry and Patricia, enjoying there honeymoon. I find that odd. I am all for privacy but harry could not shut up talking about his Wife for months, the engagement or the wedding for that matter. Harry has gone all quiet. odd. Does anyone run this anymore and where is Mori. IS he OK?
-
wtf, you're such a tool. I HATE YOU!
-
Just for us on the internets....
-
Ahh, I remember months ago when everyone was wondering what that trailer before Transformers was, and now...The news that someone died was more interesting than knowing something-that-might be "Cloverfield" related.Did anyone else read that Hong Kong is somehow going to be in the DK story line? I want news on that stuff...
-

Take out the spaces.
I think it looks really cool, nothing like what I was expecting but very cool. -
He doesn't say "It's a lion",.... he says "It's alive".
But when you think about it, it's totally unrealistic to think that someone would shout the words "It's alive" when faced with a giant monster. Why the fuck would you have to point out the obvious "it's alive"? -
That concept art is really well done if it is a fake. Where did you get that image from, teh awesome?
-
WTF is up with "stories" like this...
-
I've been doing some searching trying to find out myself, I got it off a blog that said it was a "fake". Well, after searching more deeply I discovered that the earliest site to have the image states that it was a real concept image that had been leaked. I also found 2 other sites saying it was the real deal.
Personally, I think that it WAS leaked and then labeled fake to throw people off. -
Simply google Cloverfield Monster.
Thats where I found it.
I wonder why AICN hasn't seen this picture yet, it would make a great TB. -
That's the real monster for sure. They just tried to throw everyone off by claiming it was fake after it leaked.
-
Phil Tippett / guy in suit dressed as whale/slug/ragworm...
It all leads to one thing.... Invasion of the Rancor monster. -
Let's do an American version of 'The Host' 'xcept it's gotta be a thousand times bigger cos it's American
-
then the whale-monster haters are insane. because thats pretty awesome.
-
Yeah it is, I LOVE it.
It seems older and wiser than Godzilla.
After seeing that picture and listening to the Monster scream again I can definitely see it, it totally fits.
Color me freaking excited!!
-
FIRE IS BAD!!
-
That monster design is awesome. Too bad that everybody knows the monster is actually Sarah Jessica Parker and nobody gives a fuck about any of this anymore.
-
I'm checking in for the responses more than any news I'll get here.
-
http://dougblot .blogspot .com/ (minus spaces) guy did it for a site forum design-the-cloverfield-monster-contest apparently, and there's another one there he's working on. There's some nice artwork in his blog, very nice.
-
http://tinyurl.com/25ebvv .. very creepy indeed. That would be a sight of horror for NY people.
-
nothing that has come out has been short of BORING! They could've at least given the fans a little more then the lame stuff we've been getting. The cloverfield update sites just look pathetic now. Its almost beem 3 months and nothing? Just some crappy Slusho.com updates and everyone wets themselves. I think this has been run horrendously and the good will ad excitement is turning to frustration and agitation.
-
i wish those pics were real. because they're cool. that dougbot guy is pretty damn good.
-
Yes you do.
-
Ever since a scene in "Gamera 3" I have thought that a hand held docu style dai kaiju film would own. It's a scene where a news program shows handheld video footage sent in by a viewer of gamera leaving the scene of a fight, blasting off. It was creepy, it felt real, and it was a flying turtle.
Its that third window that tells our brain this could happen, anyways I have hope for cloverfield haters should learn to speak japanese cuz that shit get you killed out here son.. -

Cthulhu attacks: people start ripping their eyes out
by the green gargantua
jamming knives into their ears, mumbling jibberish, half the populace goes mad or begin floating through the air in telekenetic comas induced by the coming of the old ones. Yea, it would make a great movie in this doc style but no one in Hollywood is capable of the kind of dark chaotic vision to make it work.

Let's all get excited about a little nothing, Merrick. Speaking of things to be excited over, how about the curve of Jessica Biel's CTHULHU over on that JLA post? Yowza! Now that's a CLOVERFIELD I'm interested in seeing.
-
There is a point where movies would be going too far. That thing coming at me on a big screen... I would shit my intestines.
-
It's impossible from an aesthetic standpoint; isn't it all being shot on handheld camera? Not to say this isn't cool news, just that calling this movie a throwback is a bit confusing to me.

What, the Enterprise doesn't fight space monsters, too?
by mrmysteryguest
Tippett could be working on both Cloverfield and Trek XI!

-
Crap, guess I didn't notice -- way to go. Be sure to keep people asking, it can be a new drinking game.
-
So this is the HALF-LIFE 2 movie?Kewl!
-
No, wait. That's true.
-
how long before HTML shit in posts gets taken off us again. Just leave para breaks, please.
-
Seems like JJ's attentions are focussed eslewhere. I'm hoping that Cloverfield or whatever it transpires to be called can regain the initial interest it sparked with that teaser; but it'd take something more substantial than a few photos and and a hokey soft drink site, the next trailer really needs to impress. As for a possible mooted Cthulhu/Lovecraft connection, I hope that's true, it's lend a bit more weight to what presently sounds like a verite but still pretty generic monster on the rampage flick. What I'd really like to see (and I'm sure would many of the Lovecraft TB devotees) is a slavishly devoted take on the whole Call of Cthulhu/Shadow over Innsmouth/Dagon mythos. In the hands of a skilled director like Cuaron or Del Torro it would be something bordering on geekasm.
-
Love how everyone bitches that it isn't news and blah blah blah but posts and reads nontheless.
-
Can't believe some of the comments up there. Even if this is a snippet of news, the fact that the name "Phil Tippett" is attached to this Cloverfield project says a lot. If the name Phil Tippett is unknown to you then you don't deserve to call yourself a film fan. Sheesh. And no, he did not get "shitcanned" in the middle of Jurassic Park's production. Even though it was decided to move from go-motion animation to CGI, they still needed someone that knew how to animate (ie. Phil Tippett). Tippett Studios is still very much involved in providing VFX for films too and is currently in production on The Golden Compass and The Spiderwick Chronicles. And he's friggin ILM alumni people! Ok, I'm done. Just seeing that lack of respect for a true FX pioneer up there was a bit daunting. Time for a nap.
-
I skipped most of the comments. The thing is, I don't give a flying frack if the effects are CGI or practical as long as they don't look too cheesy. The key to how good the movie will be is story and performances. We've had some amazing looking movies the last 30 years that were simply crap because producers cared more about how the movie looked than whether it made any sense
-
Thank you Nice, it made my day.
-
I knew this months ago when my friend at Tippett (yes, he's real) told me he was working on this. I had no idea that this was big news, otherwise I would have said something. And by the way, even THEY don't know what the final title of the film is going to be (they're calling it Cloverfield also).
-
because the interest in this movie is waning FAST. I will admit the teaser was a brilliantly perfect way to introduce a movie to the world, and the subsequent websites and their muddled clues only helped fuel the fire. (Not to mention deciphering the real ones from the fake ones). But now over a couple of months the only thing to report are...more blurred pictures, a website with dancing sodas, a roar, and a youtube-live video of one of the main characters talking in her room? WTF? There isn't even a title to the film yet. The interest is draining fast on this movie. I consider myself to be a pretty good indicator of the POA (pulse of America), and if I'm losing interest in this I can guarantee a lot of other people are too. By now the hype is so overinflated that the bubble is just ready to burst, and there will definitely be a backlash if nothing is given out soon. And it better be something good, i.e. another great trailer or at least a website with some good info on the movie. If the latest BIG update is just another blurry photo of people walking around, a lot of people will be done with this movie.
-
It's funny to watch the movie production company sending guys onto this thread to say things like "I'm a friend of Doug and we just did those scribbles for fun, they're not the real deal" etc...
bollocks.
That pic is the real design, and they just don't want it to leak yet because they're currently working on a huge new teaser. -
I HAVE NO IDEA WHO THESE PEOPLE ARE!
-
...the rumors that we won't even be shown a full monster view during the movie. What I mean is that the monster's face will always be obscured or out of focus somehow, never fulling showing it. This kind of makes sense considering a) since it's a handheld-camera type movie it'll be difficult to conceive the camera user conveniently having money shots of the monster, and b) this sounds like the pretentious thing that J.J. Abrams would do. What's the best way to live up to the monster's hype? Don't show the most important things about it and instead have the people use their imagination.
-
If you havent already seen this,go to www.tagruato.jp.I am sure most of you have by now
